Assessing SDG 4 indicators in online and blended higher education within conflict zones: A case study of northern India's higher education institutions

Resilient higher education is fostered, and further assessed, by the United Nations through the metrics provided by Sustainable Development Goal 4, called indicators. These indicators serve as a yardstick to evaluate a country's success in sustainability. Concerningly, the recent scholarly work highlights the limitations associated with Sustainable Development Goal 4 indicators, including the associated political connotations and fuzziness. However, we note a dearth of attempts to unwrap the merit of Sustainable Development Goal 4 indicators in online and blended learning in higher education, specifically in conflict zones. This study aims to bridge this gap by exploring the challenges and opportunities presented by the current Sustainable Development Goal 4 indicators in evaluating online and blended learning in higher educational institutions in India's conflict-affected northern areas. Employing a needs assessment methodology, the research draws on data from two distinct sources: primary data from 3,353 learners obtained through a self-constructed questionnaire for higher education institutions in northern India and secondary data gleaned from international and national policy documents. The thematic analysis of results, underpinned by the barriers model, underscores significant concerns regarding the comprehensiveness, validity, and relevance of the prevailing SDG 4 indicators, particularly the Gross Enrolment Ratio and Gender Parity Index, in northern India. It is argued that these indicators fall short of accurately capturing the nuances of online and blended learning within the local contexts, thereby questioning their utility for such purposes. The study reveals that the Gross Enrolment Ratio is not successful in giving a complete picture of its variations by failing to reveal the political reasons behind its drop during emergency remote teaching in the northern conflict zones of India. Moreover, the Gender Parity Index is endowed with interpretative challenges, where despite an increased value being deemed affirmative for gender equity, its increase ironically highlights a new gender divide because of an increased dropout rate among male learners from tribal communities. Through the case of higher education institutions in J&K and Ladakh, the study further provides keywords which could bolster the effectiveness of the SDG 4 indicator framework by making it more responsive to the changing educational landscape, thus making it an indispensable tool in the hands of researchers and policy-makers. Consequently, this study positions itself at the forefront of scholarly efforts to critically re-evaluate and propose revisions to the SDG 4 indicators in light of the shifting teaching and learning paradigms.

Customer Focus as a Critical Success Factors for Business Process Re-engineering to Achieve Academic Performance. A Case of Higher Education Institutions in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

In this study, the authors are proposing an innovative business process re-engineering improvement strategy by adopting, adapting and focusing on customers (students as the primary customers of higher education) concept to improve their quality of education and achieve academic performance. The research aims to investigate the influence of customer focus (student) variables on academic performance. Customer focus is one of the components of BPR and administrative process at higher education. The study uses BPR as Business strategic management approach to be applied in educational sector to enhance performance. The findings reveal a complex interplay of factors influencing academic performance within higher education institutions in Kinshasa, DRC. While certain aspects, such as orientation processes and the Ministry of Education’s selection process, were positively regarded, there is room for improvement in other areas, particularly in considering academic performance during admission and addressing non-academic factors that can ameliorate students’ performance. The findings can inform various stakeholders to design policies that enhance academic performance by adopting a more customer focus (student oriented) approach, while also addressing socio-economic issues and other non-academic factors preventing students’ performance.

Influential Factors in the Implementation of an Educational Blockchain System in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: Case of Higher Education Institutions

Blockchain has gained significant attention and use beyond its initial purpose. It is recognized as a disruptive technology in many domains, including education. Its interest in education has grown due to its ability to prevent fraud in academic documents. This research aimed to identify influential factors in implementing a Blockchain system in DR Congo higher education using the combination of Technology Acceptance Model & Technology-Organization-Environment. Data was collected through an online survey of 355 respondents from public and private institutions of the country. The findings provide insight into the factors influencing Blockchain adoption and highlight its importance in addressing the issue.

Improving Job Performance through Budget Participation: Case of Higher Education Institutions

This study examined the role of budget participation on job performance of higher educational institutions, in Somalia. The research design used for this study was correlational, with data were collected through a questionnaire from 80 respondents from five universities, located in Mogadishu, Somalia. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS software, revealing that budget participation play a significant role in improving job performance. In conclusion, it is evident that employee budget participation can serve as a crucial catalyst for promoting employee and institutional performances within educational institutions. Moreover, the article proposes that institutions may be able to avoid employee dissatisfaction, low performance and poor management performance by putting in place an effective budget setting procedure. In addition, the article makes the case that senior management should employ participatory budgeting to foster a sound environment that promotes shared accountability, openness, and responsibility, which eventually strengthening the institutionalization and sustainability of these organizations.

Digital violence in a higher education institution

Digital violence is a reality both in the global, national and local context. In different areas, including the Institutional, as is the case of Higher Education institutions. So, in order to know the presence and types of violence that are manifested through digital media in university spaces, it is relevant and urgent to carry out a diagnostic study at ITSON.The objective is to know the presence of the types of violence that are manifested through digital media in university spaces in students of the Administrative Economic DES. The research carried out is an exploratory and quantitative study. The selected technique was the survey and the elaborated instrument was an ad hoc questionnaire of 35 questions, in order to measure the degree of incidence of digital violence through a survey and the analysis of results through the statistical method, using probabilistic sampling. Contributing to influence the university community in the prevention and action of digital violence through institutional measures and policies aimed at raising awareness, training and training of all members.

In the context of organizations and their relationship with the increasingly competitive environment, leaders have been pressured to establish control systems in which the differences between employees are exacerbated since, in the absence of labor competencies, these are They are intended to substitute for acts of loyalty to the company that lead to violence towards those who are the culprits of poor performance or are not seen as part of a working group. This is how organizational violence is justified within collaborative teams, as would be the case of Higher Education Institutions where the phenomenon is exacerbated with the emergence of electronic technologies, devices, and networks. The objective of this study was to establish the reliability and validity of an instrument that measures organizational violence. A non-experimental, cross-sectional, and confirmatory study was carried out with a selection of 100 students from a public university in central Mexico. The results show that organizational violence would be made up of eight factors: prejudice, depersonalization, benevolence, harassment, subjugation, objectification, stigma, and harassment, which show the limits of the study and guidelines of research concerning equity.

Improving Creativity through Workforce Diversity: A Case of Higher Education Institutions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

This study empirically tests the impact of workforce diversity on creativity among teaching faculties of universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Employing a convenient sampling technique, a sample of 180 employees - Lecturers, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Professors of the universities - is collected from the universities situated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A total of 180 questionnaires were disseminated among the respondents out of which 160 appropriate questionnaires were received forming a percentage of 88.8%. Multiple analyses descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis are conducted to make sure the findings are reliable and meet the scientific rigor. The results of the research reveal that workforce diversity as a whole and its dimensions Age diversity, Gender diversity and Education diversity have significant impact on creativity. This implies that the administration of the universities should make sure to induce diversity in their workforce to enhance learning, teaching, and research as well as enrich the students’ experience.

Faculty Members’ Perception of Learning Organization: A Case of Higher Education Institutions

Based on the learning organization theory the main purpose of this research is to discuss how demographics variables affect the learning organization disciplines perception in faculty members of higher education institutes (HEIs) of Pakistan. This study explores that how demographic variables affect the learning organization disciplines perception at the HEIs level. We use the demographic variables and learning organization model in higher education institutions of Pakistan. In doing so, we used a survey instrument to collect data from 253 faculty members of HEIs in Pakistan. In addition, 15 in-depth interviews were conducted with the same respondents. Study findings revealed that there is a low application of the learning organization disciplines in HEIs in Pakistan. Further study also explains that demographic variables generated a variance of 2.7% in learning organization culture. Further, this study suggested some substantial implications for universities and regulatory bodies of HEIs.

Projects’ success and respective factors that produce it – The case of Higher Education Institutions in Albania

Organizations and institutions are in continuous change. What remains unchanged is their need for new and continuous participation in international and national projects, as an incentive to adapt to innovations and to develop cooperation. In order to realize all the set objectives and fulfil initial goals, it goes without saying that a project should be based on a framework of criterions, considered as crucial for a successful implementation and realization of projects. The paper addresses such framework, criteria and the related issues with a special focus on HEIs in Albania. Through the review of a rich literature, we have worked on the definition of a project, the development phases, as well as some projects undertaken by HEIs. The methodology used consists in utilizing the semi-structured interviews, and the survey analysis will be done in the QDA Miner Lite program, thus drawing final conclusions, thereon. The study shows that, generally HEIs in Albania have taken solid steps towards developing sustainable and successful projects, being aware of the necessary criteria that drive success and the monitoring of projects during all project’s stages.

The Role of Content Strategy in Social Media on Brand Post’s Popularity: A Case of Higher Education Institutions in Turkey

Abstract The highly competitive higher education market has turned to branding as a solution for dealing with today’s global challenges. One important tool of a sustainable brand strategy involves forming brand fan pages and attracting followers on social networking web sites. Implementing effective content strategy on brands’ fan pages can help to form and foster relationships with the target group. Thus the aim of this study is to understand the role that content strategy in social networking web sites plays in determining the popularity of brand posts’ created by leading higher education institutions in Turkey. Results indicate that the top ten higher education institutions in Turkey most commonly made posts representing the Text + image + link content type. The majority of posts to community members were created by the institutions themselves, involved university news and were primarily made on weekdays between noon and 18:00. Additionally, MANOVA analyses were conducted to investigate the role of various elements of content strategy on brand posts’ popularity. Results indicate that content type, content agility, content context, posting type, and posting day significantly impact the number of likes, shares and comments, which are indicators of brand posts’ popularity.

Factors Affecting Attitude Toward Learning Mathematics: A Case of Higher Education Institutions in the Gulf Region

Mathematics is an important subject that plays a crucial role in constructing mental discipline among students. There has been a great focus on investigating students’ attitudes toward mathematics in higher education settings. The current study is aiming to explore the factors that affect attitudes toward math among higher education students in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Math Attitude Questionnaire MAQ was adapted from Prokop et al. to fulfill the study objectives. Gender and math course levels were the proposed variables that could influence students’ attitudes toward learning mathematics in six different dimensions. Data analysis demonstrated that higher education students in the UAE show a positive attitude toward math in most MAQ dimensions. The T-test for Independent Sample revealed that gender does not affect students’ attitudes toward learning mathematics. Moreover, the ANOVA test revealed that mathematics course levels have a significant impact on students’ attitudes toward math in the six dimensions of MAQ. The math instructor and equipment dimensions were found to have a significant effect on students’ attitudes among the students taking advanced math courses. The findings of this study could benefit the higher education system in the context of enhancing mathematics teaching and assessment.

Exploring Leadership Dilemma for Faculty: A Case of Higher Education institutions in Pakistan

Effective leadership in academia is crucial as well as an important component for the success of higher education institutions and to produce graduates of the twenty-first century. However, the complexity of educational reforms, multiple goals, and traditional norms stimulate vague and contested leadership amongst faculty members. The paper reveals the significance of leadership for higher education institutions and explore how leadership abilities can be indoctrinate at the faculty level. A qualitative study was designed by arranging a series of focus group discussions to collect the data. By conducting thematic analysis; few themes emerged which enlightens the significance of academic leadership. In higher education institutions faculty members directly promote the institutional teaching mission, advance learning, and research by representing themselves as core human resources of higher education institutions. Lastly, the paper presents the art of practicing situational leadership in educational reforms considering different paradigms of leadership.

Assessing the relative importance of sustainability indicators for smart campuses: A case of higher education institutions in Nigeria

The appraisal of educational institution campuses’ sustainability performance has been on the rise within the past decades. This appraisal is primarily due to the importance of establishing and executing planning policies targeted at designing smart, healthy, and sustainable campuses. In ensuring environmental sustainability for smart development in Nigeria tertiary institution campuses, allocating relative importance and weights to selected indicators was carried out via the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The relevant indicators peculiar to Nigeria’s higher education institutions were identified based on social media user-generated content. The AHP involves a pairwise comparison survey with 18 certified town planning professionals from different parts of the country. The study prioritized transportation as the most important sustainability attribute for planning the smart campuses of tertiary-level education institutions in Nigeria elsewhere with similar environments. The study proposed the development of a spatial data infrastructure for achieving the Africa smart city agenda.

Demonstrating the motivational scale for commitments toward teachers’ turnover intentions using self-determination theory: a case of higher education institutions in Pakistan

PurposeThis paper aims to demonstrate the turnover intentions (TIs) among the academic faculty of higher education institutions (HEIs) in Pakistan through their motivation and commitment toward the concerned institution. It inspects the relationship of dimensions of motivation including an absence of motivation (AM), extrinsic motivation (ExM) and intrinsic motivation (InM) with the dimensions of commitment including affective commitment (AC), continuous commitment (CC) and normative commitment (NC) and finally the academic's TIs.Design/methodology/approachThe paper used the self-determination theory (SDT), the theory of organizational commitment (OC) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) for its proposed model. A sample of 500 academics, working under higher education commission recognized public and private universities in Punjab Pakistan. A structural equation modeling (SEM) conducted for analysis using an algorithm, bootstrapping and blindfolding techniques.FindingsThe outcomes of the research are attention-grabbing, as no direct relationship has been observed between the dimensions of motivation and TIs except InM. The dimensions of commitments are mediating the relationship between motivation and TIs with high significance value. The results reveal a significant adverse effect on TIs through two dimensions of commitment.Research limitations/implicationsAs it is the case of a developing country like Pakistan therefore the finding cannot generalize to developed countries.Practical implicationsThe findings of this research may lead the policymakers and practitioners of HEIs and controlling body to retain their competent teachers.Social implicationsThis research can help the private sector to develop strategies about the retention of their competent teachers within the institutions that not just value the institution but also will be much beneficial for the students and society.Originality/valueThis paper is identifying how motivation is related to TIs and the role of commitment in it at HEIs. Still, no research has been conducted considering this avenue of SDT, OC and TPB

Development of Key Performance Measures for E-Learning Knowledge Systems: The Case of Higher Education Institutions in Taiwan

To cope with the trend of e-learning and competition in global higher education, the Ministry of Education of Taiwan has promoted the ‘Project on deep ploughing of e-Learning’ to study the establishment of university e-learning knowledge systems, which will serve as a reference for universities to develop e-learning in response to the trends of the digital age. The research team developed a preliminary draft of the e-learning knowledge system through a literature review, modified it through the Delphi technique, and finally developed an e-learning knowledge system. The system consists of two dimensions: ‘organization’ and ‘teaching team’. The organization dimension is divided into the ‘level of preparation’ and ‘execution and implementation’ sub-dimensions. The dimension of the teaching team is divided into the ‘basic ability’ and ‘course design and application’ sub-dimensions for a total of 4 sub-dimensions. The dimensions and sub-dimensions are divided into levels, sub-levels, indicators, and the content of indicators. The results of the research include 2 dimensions, 4 sub-dimensions, 14 levels, 40 sub-levels, and 84 indicators.

Role of brand experience and brand affect in creating brand engagement: a case of higher education institutions (HEIs)

ABSTRACT HEIs globally face growing competition that demands new marketing strategies and practices to leverage the power of social media platforms to increase brand engagement of HEIs. Largely ignored in past studies, this study established the much-needed link between brand equity drivers, namely brand experience, brand interactivity, and brand engagement on social media and identified the path to engage students and measure their loyalty. A total of 254 self-administered responses (survey questionnaires) were collected from the students of 5 public and 10 private universities. The results drawn through PLS-SEM analysis exhibited a significant mediating role of brand affect (emotional response) between brand experience (sensory and behavioral) and brand engagement behavior. The findings also showed the critical rule of brand interactivity towards brand engagement behavior. The study suggests leveraging the power of brand experience and brand interactivity to drive brand engagement behavior through the critical role of brand affect in HEIs.

Competitive implications of quality assurance processes in higher education. The case of higher education in engineering in France

Quality assurance in higher education is one of the cornerstones of the Bologna agenda and the Lisbon strategy, which aims at establishing the world’s most competitive knowledge economy. Extensive literature up to now has addressed quality assurance as a regulatory and policy mechanism and has presented quality assurance and market forces as antagonistic. However, what policymakers in the field fail to see is that the ‘official’ quality assurance processes also have implications in terms of competition. Indeed, higher education institutions are using the results of these, in principle aseptic, non-market-related evaluation processes, as a way to achieve competitive advantage. This paper analyses the case of higher education institutions in engineering in France. The institutional websites of 163 higher education institutions have been analysed through code-based content analysis techniques and Multiple Correspondence Analysis. This study shows that the analysis of institutional websites can be used as a tool to gauge the importance of the different dimensions of quality assurance for higher education institutions in a given national system. Furthermore, a clear association has been found between the ranking position of an institution and its communication behaviour. The results have been interpreted in the light of Neoinstitutional Theory and Porter’s generic competitive strategies. Practical implications for quality assurance practitioners and managers at higher education institutions have been highlighted.
