Spatial–Temporal Evolution Patterns and Regulatory Strategies for Land Resource Carrying Capacity of China’s Major Grain-Producing Areas

Research on land resource carrying capacity (LRCC) focuses on the population that regional land resources can support as well as the grain output they can deliver. China’s major grain-producing areas consist of 13 provinces, and the grain produced in these areas makes up 75% of the country’s gross grain output. To boost the land carrying capacity of major grain-producing areas and to ensure national food security, it is crucial to examine the spatial–temporal evolution patterns of LRCC and to devise optimal regulatory strategies. From the perspective of human–grain relationships, this paper looks into the evolutionary features of the spatial–temporal patterns of the LRCC of China’s major grain-producing areas based on a land resource carrying capacity model, a land resource carrying capacity index model, and a land resource limitation model. We obtain three main results: (1) On the temporal scale, the land resource carrying capacity index (LRCCI) of China’s major grain-producing areas as a whole tapered off over a period from 1980 to 2020, whereas the overall LRCC increased in this period, indicating that the human–grain relationship in China’s major grain-producing areas is improving. (2) On a spatial scale, China’s major grain-producing areas ranked by LRCC from the greatest to the lowest, in 2020, were North China, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Northeast China, and other regions. In terms of the carrying state of land resources, provinces with grain surpluses significantly rose during 1980–2020, the growth of LRCC of the aforementioned four major regions markedly slowed down in 2015–2020, and a large gap exists in LRCCI between the 13 provinces, revealing an unbalanced, insufficient development of LRCC in each province. (3) From 2000 to 2020, the limit of land resources on population aggregation in most major grain-producing areas was negative, and its absolute value continued to increase; this suggests that the land resources of major grain-producing provinces set small limits on population aggregation, with great potential for increasing LRCC. Taking into account the research results, this paper gives strategies for regulating the LRCC of China’s major grain-producing areas in a bid to further augment the human–grain carrying capacity of land resources in China’s major grain-producing areas and to guarantee national food security.

Analysis and Prediction of Land Resources’ Carrying Capacity in 31 Provinces of China from 2008 to 2016

The rapid development of urbanization, population growth, and unreasonable use of land resources have made the contradiction between human beings and land increasingly prominent, and the carrying capacity of land resources has become an important factor affecting the sustainable development of a city or even a country. Based on the carrying capacity of agricultural land, construction land, and ecological land in 31 provinces of China, this paper analyzed the spatiotemporal characteristics of the carrying capacity of land resources in 31 provinces of China from 2008 to 2016 by using single-factor carrying capacity evaluation and comprehensive carrying capacity evaluation methods. The evaluation results were divided into six levels (No pressure, Lower pressure, Low pressure, Medium pressure, High pressure, Higher pressure), and the ArcGIS10.2 software was used for visualization, and the carrying capacity prediction model was constructed to predict the development trend of the comprehensive carrying capacity of land resources in 2020 and 2025. The results showed that China’s land carrying capacity is extremely unbalanced. Whether from the evaluation results of single-factor carrying capacity or comprehensive carrying capacity, we showed the characteristics of high pressure in the east and low pressure in the west, and that the regional land resources have a deteriorating trend. Through the prediction of the future land resource carrying capacity index, it was found that the comprehensive carrying capacity index of land resources in 31 provinces of China will still show an upward trend in the future.

Socio-economic aspect and carrying capacity of agricultural land resources to support the development of strategic agricultural commodities

The challenges of future agricultural development in Indonesia are still very heavy in relation to the carrying capacity of land resources and socio-economic aspects. This paper aimed to analyze the important steps of strategic commodity development based on the role of socio-economic aspects and the support of agricultural land carrying capacity. The analyses showed that the contribution of the agricultural sector to national income is quite high as indicated by the agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) at around 10.27% of the national GDP and current agricultural commodities as a source of foreign exchange come from oil palm and cocoa. However, fluctuation in market demand and price of agricultural commodities still depends on supply and demand. The supply is affected by climate disturbances and natural disasters, while the demand is related to the growing population. Socio-economic aspects as the prerequisites for agricultural commodity development include markets, farmer exchange rates and other supporting facilities. Land resources include the availability of land and irrigation water. The carrying capacity of rice fields in Indonesia is still very heavy, namely 34 people ha−1 of rice fields, while neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Thailand are 14.0 and 2.5 people ha−1, respectively.

Land aspects of environmental aspects in using space in Kotamobagu city, North Sulawesi province

The land is an important resource for human survival. Its utilization must be following the capacity of the environment, the resources owned and the ability of the land, or the other words according to the carrying capacity of the environment. This study aims to determine the conditions of actual land use and investigate the class of land capacity in Kotamobagu City of North Sulawesi Province, so the suitability between the class of land capacity and the plan of actual land use and the plan of land use of RTRW can be known, determine whether the environmental carrying capacity is already overcapacity or not, and arrange the land use directive based on the carrying capacity of the land resources environment in Kotamobagu City of North Sulawesi Province. The research method uses a combination of qualitative methods and quantitative methods. The results of the research indicate that the actual use in Kotamobagu City of North Sulawesi Province, in general, 20.38% of the total area is built up, and the rest has not been built. The class of land capacity in Kotamobagu City consist of Class II (75.93%), Class III (11.57%), Class IV (5.33%), Class VI (5.7%), Class VII (0, 59%), and Class VIII (0.91%). The suitability between the class of land capacity and the actual land use is 90.13%. The suitability between the class of land capacity and the plan of land development of RTRW is 95.85%. The status of the environmental carrying capacity of land resources in Kotamobagu City at present is not exceeded since the amount of land availability is still greater than the land needs. Thus, it is recommended that the land use direction be divided into three functions namely, protected area, cultivated area, and limited cultivated area.

A study on the comprehensive carrying capacity and spatial optimization under the new development concept - an empirical study of Shandong province

Scientific evaluation of the comprehensive carrying capacity of land is the condition for regional coordination and high-quality economic development. Applied entropy method and expert marking to determine weight, and adopted multi-objective comprehensive evaluation model to evaluate the comprehensive carrying capacity of land resources from 2008 to 2018 in Shandong province. The results show that the comprehensive carrying capacity level is located in the lower and intermediate critical level, which has obvious spatial differences, and carrying capacities of social economic, land resource, water resource and ecological environmental are not consistent. On this basis, according to obstacle characteristics of land comprehensive carrying capacity, puts forward the proposal for space optimization pattern.

Research on Carrying Capacity of Resources and Problems of Sustainable Development in Hunan Province

The relative carrying capacity of resources was used to analyze the dynamic changes of Hunan province. The relative carrying capacity of land resources, water resources, economy resources and synthetic capacity of Hunan province compared with Whole County and Jiangsu province from2004 to 2011 were calculated. The results shown that the Hunan province is in population relatively overloaded state. The consultation was drawn as transform economic growth mode, strict control population in resources lack and environmental vulnerability areas should be taken to reduce population growth pressures on resources.

Research on Relative Carrying Capacity of Resources of Inner Mongolia

The relative carrying capacity of resources methods was used to calculate the relative carrying capacity of land resources, the relative carrying capacity of economic resources and carrying capacity of integrated resource of Inner Mongolia during 1978-2008. Study shows that: carrying capacity of integrated resource of Inner Mongolia is surplus, overloading population between-15.22 to-32.38 million, land resources is the main capacity resources of Inner Mongolia during the last 30 years. The main causes for the sustainable development status in Inner Mongolia is the wide land and small population, but considering lots of land in Inner mongolia can not be cultured, such as desert and gobi, and that economic foundation of Inner Mongolia is still weak, so Inner Mongolia should speed up economic development, enhance the carrying capacity of economic resources.

Study on Relative Carrying Capacity of Resources of Henan Province

The relative carrying capacity of resources methods was used to calculate the relative carrying capacity of land resources, the relative carrying capacity of economic resources and carrying capacity of integrated resource of Henan province during 1978-2008. Study shows that: carrying capacity of integrated resource of Henan province is overload, overloading population between 10.8 ~ 28.9 million, showing a "low - high - low" fluctuations; before 1996, land resources is the main capacity resources of Henan province, while economic resources become the main capacity resources from then on, mainly due to the decrease of indices of the carrying capacity of land resources. The key factors to restrict sustainable development in Henan province is a weak economic foundation and a large population, so Henan province should speed up economic development, enhance the carrying capacity of economic resources; control the rapid population growth, improve population quality, make great efforts to achieve sustainable development of resources, environmental, economic and population in Henan province

Spatial and Dynamic Analysis of Regional Sustainable Development Using Geographic Information System and Relative Carrying Capacity of Resources

Relative carrying capacity of resources is an index to measure sustainable development through carrying capacity. Case studies of eleven cities in Zhejiang (Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Jiaxing, Huzhou, Shaoxing, Jinhua, Quzhou, Zhoushan, Taizhou and Lishui) illustrated regional sustainable development approach. In this study, to provide insight into spatial and dynamic analysis of region sustainable development, we calculated the relative carrying capacity of land resources and economical resources and synthetical carrying capacity of resources in different cities in Zhejiang, and geographic information system was carried out. The results showed that all cities but Hangzhou and Ningbo were ecologically sustainable, and relative carrying capacity of land resources in northern and eastern Zhejiang was larger than those in southern and western Zhejiang. The sampling years of Wenzhou, Hangzhou and Ningbo contribution rates of land resource to synthetic carrying capacity were grouped into three stages, and there were two milestones trends and changes in 1996 and 2004, respectively. This study demonstrated that geographic information system and relative carrying capacity of resources are effective for assessment of region sustainable development, and provide policy guidelines for decision-making.

Evaluation on Sustainable Utilization of Water Resource in North Shaanxi Province Based on Ecological Footprint Model

Since the ecological footprint model was proposed by E.R.William,it has been widely used.It,however,is mostly applied to evaluate the ecological carrying capacity of land resources but rarely used in evaluating water resources.In this paper,the carrying capacity of water resources and ecological footprint in north Shaanxi Province during the period from 1997 to 2006 are calculated by applying the ecological footprint model.The results show that the utilization of water resources in north Shaanxi Province in recent 10 years was in an ecological deficit,and the ecological deficit was increased from 3 626.87 hm2 in 1997 to 9 342.21 hm2 in 2006.In a short period of 10 years,the ecological deficit was increased by nearly 2 times,and it will be continuously increased,which has brought a serious threat to sustainable social and economic development in north Shaanxi Province.Along with the construction of the energy and heavy chemical bases,water consumption will be dramatically increased,and the shortage of water resources will become more and more serious.On which three proposals are suggested for sustainable utilization of water resources based on the peculiar economic position and ecological environment in north Shaanxi Province,they are to increase the utilization efficiency of water resources and build the water-saving society,protect water sources,prevent water pollution and speed up the construction of regional ecological environment,and implement the rational redistribution of water resources and construct the water conservancy projects.

Livestock carrying capacity evaluation in an integrated farming system: A case study from the mid-hills of Nepal

The crop livestock integrated farming system practiced in hilly regions of developing countries largely depends on the ecosystem as a whole. More especifically, the livestock component of the farming system relies heavily on natural resources such as forest, grazing and agricultural land for the supply of feed and fodder. The importance of animals as agents of nutrient recycling, sources of rural energy in terms of draft power and fuel, as well as being major contributors to the farm economy, has resulted in an increased population of ruminants in these regions, creating a threat to the sustainability and productivity of these land resources. This paper is an attempt to evaluate the livestock carrying capacity of land resources and to formulate the optimum herd size compatible with the differently resourced farm categories within the sub-watershed region of the mid-hills in Nepal. Our analysis reveals that the livestock carrying capacity of the land resources at the watershed level is 11696 Livestock Units (LU), whereas current stocking is 12985 LU, suggesting an overstocking of 1289 LU at the watershed level. Total feed supply from different sources is 12668 mt/yr whereas current Total Digestive Nutrient (TDN) demand is 14060 mt/yr, a negative balance of 1393 mt/yr. The excess livestock at the sub-watershed level directly implies excess livestock holding, producing a poor nutritional status for the farm household. Linear programming analysis reveals that the farmers of large, medium and small category farms can optimize their livestock holding by a combination of 3 LU buffaloes and 4 LU goats, 2 LU buffaloes and 4 LU goats and 1 LU buffaloes and 4.4 LU goats, thus giving maximum return to the farm family without exerting pressure on fragile natural resources.

Evaluation of the livestock carrying capacity of land resources in the Hills of Nepal based on total digestive nutrient analysis

Land degradation and poverty caused by traditional arable agriculture have been serious problems in the ecologically fragile and economically backward mountains of Nepal. There is a prospect to address both of these problems to some extent by promoting livestock raising. However, a large livestock population exceeding the carrying capacity of land resources will risk undermining the sustainability and productivity of these resources. On the basis of these concerns, this study analyzes the carrying capacity of land resources under on-going and improved management systems based on total digestive nutrient (TDN) demand and supply situation in the study area. Results of analyses revealed that under the current type of management system, land resources in Shyangja district could provide the required amount of TDN to 147,735 livestock standard units (LSU), whereas the total number of LSU had already reached 203,510 as of 1996/97. Provided improvements are made in forest and grazing-land management as well as in crop production and agroforestry systems in line with assumptions made, land resources in the study area will be able to accommodate additional 6408 LSU on top of existing stock by the year 2001/02 and 63,113 LSU by the year 2006/07.
