Singapore Social Work Students: Attitudes toward Older Adults

Using the Sanders, Montgomery, Pittman and Balkwell (1984) instrument, this study found that the attitudes of a sample of undergraduate Singaporean students (n = 201) toward older adults were in the neutral range. A small minority (5.6%) was planning a career in gerontology. Comparisons of the findings were made with an American sample. Implications for social work education and future research were discussed.

SURVIVING YOUR GRADUATE GERONTOLOGY EDUCATION AND ENTERING THE JOB MARKET

A comprehensive graduate education in gerontology requires the transmission of information that may or may not occur in a formalized setting such as a classroom. This article presents information on a full spectrum of issues related to educational and professional success, including managing graduate school, paths to careers in gerontology, securing a job, and socialization into the university as a professional. Information on these topics will help prepare future gerontologists to meet the challenges of the 21st century and the accompanying changing demographic landscape.

Aging and Anthropology in Alaska

When I started my anthropological training I had no idea how I would use it until I met a woman who was born in 1906 in Council, Alaska, 85 miles northwest of Nome. She led a fascinating life and at 79 was still an active volunteer and life participant. Through my association with her I began to think of how I could combine anthropology with gerontology and my career goals formed. I did not want to just obtain stories from elders, but rather see how I could help people manage in these rapidly changing times. Specifically through applied anthropology, I wanted to provide appropriate services to elders in the vast state where I live. Knowing this goal provided focus to my anthropological training, allowing me to pursue projects that enhanced my education and employment opportunities. Moreover, my anthropological background alerted me to the importance of the structure and history of service provision. This provided a catalyst for further investigation of the political and social issues of aging in Alaska, which gave me a holistic picture of current services.

Working with Older People: Thoughts on a Career in Gerontology

An evaluation of a gerontological training program for nursing assistants.

A gerontological training program for nursing assistants has been developed by the New England Gerontology Academy to (1) improve the quality of care delivered to the institutionalized elderly, and (2) provide training and assistance on a gerontology career ladder to displaced homemakers, AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) recipients, unemployed immigrants, and other disadvantaged groups. The program successfully produced a cadre of committed paraprofessionals but was not suited for those whose removal from the labor market had been long-term.

Careers in gerontology: occupational fact or academic fancy?

Volunteerism with the elderly: an innovative interdisciplinary course in graduate education.

Students currently enrolled in gerontology studies in professional schools, as well as aging network personnel pursuing advanced certificates in gerontology require a broadened perspective and knowledge base for advancing volunteer services in behalf of older citizens. This paper describes an innovative Gerontology Career Preparation Program in graduate education, a newly constructed course in volunteerism with the elderly, and accompanying field practica in volunteer programming. Self-reports by students from various helping disciplines indicate substantial application of volunteerism course learning and significant progression by aging agencies toward volunteer initiatives to strengthen service delivery.

AN UNDERGRADUATE CONCENTRATION IN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF AGING: APPROACH, PROGRAM, AND EVALUATION

Gerontological education is expanding for academic and practical reasons. One urban college offers a concentration in the psychology of aging within the psychology major. Its program is designed to meet several objectives including a systematic introduction to the psychology of aging, motivation of student interest in gerontology, development of positive attitudes toward and interaction with the aged, and preparation for advanced study or for B.S. level careers in gerontology or related areas. The philosophy, sequence of specialized courses, required and/or recommended supportive courses, practical and field experiences, academic advisement procedures, and other features of the program are presented. Problems and attempted solutions in program implementation are discussed and initial outcomes and strategies for program evaluation are enumerated.
