I work with a team of chemists, biologists, molecular biologists, and computational chemists. Our team is also assisted by other scientists with specialized training in drug metabolism, toxicology, enzymology, spectroscopy, protein purification, and X-ray crystallography. Together we design, synthesize, and test new organic compounds to identify compounds that may eventually help treat patients with an unmet medical need.

La persévérance chez les enseignants franco-ontariens

Cet article examine divers phénomènes ayant permis à des enseignants de trouver du sens à leur profession et persévérer dans l’exercice de celle-ci, notamment dans les premières années d’entrée en fonction. Plus précisément, notre recherche porte sur une dimension peu explorée dans la littérature, et s’attarde à des éléments positifs marquants de la profession relatés par des enseignants franco-ontariens. Ces épisodes de récits de vie racontées de manière anecdotique procèdent d’une forme privilégiée d'expression tant de la formation et de l'identité des personnes que de la quête de sens, en rapport avec le vécu subjectif des enseignants, dans un contexte minoritaire. La question générale de cette étude se présente comme suit : Quels sont, d’après les enseignants franco-ontariens, les événements saillants positifs qui les ont marqués surtout en début de carrière, et qui favorisent chez eux la persévérance dans l’exercice de la profession ? Les résultats sont discutés à partir de trois préoccupations : les catégories d’évènements marquants positifs qui émergent ; les différences relatives au profil de carrière selon le modèle de Huberman (1989) ; les différences relatives au sexe et à l’expérience. This article examines various phenomena that allow teachers to find a meaning in their profession and persevere in the discharge of their duties, especially during their first years in this field. More precisely, our research focuses on a less explored dimension in the literature and dwells upon the profession's most significant positive elements reported by Franco-Ontarian teachers. These life stories told in an anecdotal manner, come from a privileged form of expression as much from their training and from their personal identity as well as their quest for meaning, dealing with the teachers' subjective real-life experiences in a minority context. The general question of this study is: According to these Franco-Ontarian teachers, what are the most prominent and positive events that have influenced them, especially during the beginning of their career, and that have furthered in them perseverance in the discharge of their duties? We then discuss the findings from the three preoccupations: emerging positive events, differences related to their career's profile, according to Huberman's model (1989); and differences related to their gender and experience.

JCE Resources for Chemistry and Careers

Much has been written about careers in chemistry and other specialized areas. A cursory Internet search reveals a vast array of Web sites and books dedicated to career profiles, career tests, and more. However, even with this enormous amount of information available, it can be difficult to convey the richness of a particular career to students, or for someone to really understand what someone does day-to-day in his or her job. Take a look at the categorization of the articles in this resource paper. You’ll notice a sea of “informational” and “book review” labels, and a lack of “demonstration” and “experiment”. The articles in this resource paper are excellent background information for educators. But, please consider them as a jumping-off point. How could you go beyond merely sharing information? The rodeo and Hollywood: rodeo cowboys on screen and Western actors in the arena

If you went to a big rodeo in the 1940s, you might have seen Gene Autry singing and jumping his horse, Champ, through a flaming hoop. In the same era, familiar rodeo personalities like Hoot Gibson, Texas Rose Bascom, Slim Pickens and Ben Johnson could be seen in movies or television shows. At a rodeo in the 1960s, you might have seen Lorne Greene and Dan Blocker acting out a skit from their hit television show Bonanza. This reference book provides career profiles of both types of performers who crossed over between acting and cowboying in the period from the 1930s to the 1970s, when Hollywood and the rodeo circuit were closely linked. The first part, Rodeo Personalities with a Hollywood Connection, traces the careers of notable rodeo stars who also appeared on film or television. The next two sections detail the rodeo appearances of stars better known for their work on the screen (whether small or silver); one of these two sections focuses on performers who tended to appear solo, while the other focuses on famous casts, such as the folks of Bonanza or Gunsmoke . A fourth section alphabetically lists rodeo-related films. Appendices present further information on golden age rodeo personalities, rodeos presenting western stars, and eleven special rodeos distinguished by such features as size, prestige and Western star power.

The article describes the evolution of the Italian system and the broken course to guarantee independence of magistrate and quality of the justice from the birth of the Republic to the reform of the Berlusconi government to the hopes, up to now disappointed, dependent on the change of the parliamentary majority. Separation of the careers or the functions, guarantees of independence for the prosecuting attorney, career profile, civil and disciplinary liability for the judge or prosecutor in their quality of authors of a judicial decision, evaluations of professionalism: these are the tackled questions. They are the same problems to which French magistrate must face. From here the interest to know how they were solved in a very close Country.

Private-sector employees follow highly varied career paths. To reduce this diversity, we cluster employees by means of a classification of their career profiles. The shifts in the representativeness of the clusters between the 1935 and 1960 birth cohorts illustrate several changes in the labor market in recent decades. We find a persistent “ hard core ” of long, steady , high-wage careers, and a growing share of precarious careers marked by unemployment spells and low wages.

The interplay of boundaryless and protean careers: Combinations and implications

The boundaryless and protean career concepts are compared in this article. It is suggested that the theories can be more finely delineated to produce more effective theory and research. The boundaryless career concept is profiled according to Sullivan and Arthur’s (this issue) categories of psychological and physical boundarylessness. The protean career concept is discussed based upon the degree of self-directed and values driven career orientations a career actor demonstrates. We join these respective boundaryless and protean delineations to produce eight likely career profiles based upon combinations of the boundaryless and protean career orientations. These eight profiles are examined in terms of challenges to career actors and those who assist them in their career development.

Comprehensive School Guidance Programs in the United States: A Career Profile

An overview of the origin, evolution, and current status of comprehensive school guidance programs in the United States is presented. Specific emphasis is given to the important and central roles that career development concepts and practices have within these programs in the elementary, middle, and high schools of the United States. Possible implications for international career guidance leaders and practitioners are provided.

Boundary crosser: Anne Whitelaw and her leadership role in girls’ secondary schooling in England, New Zealand and East Africa

This paper highlights the intersections of history, gender and educational administration through a case study of an influential woman educator, Anne Whitelaw. It draws upon manuscripts, school archives, school histories, official files and periodicals from ‘both sides’ of the world. Although known in New Zealand as the first Headmistress of Auckland Girls’ Grammar School (1907–1910) little attention has been given to Anne Whitelaw more generally. This may have been because her university education was gained offshore, significantly as the first New Zealand woman to graduate from Girton College, Cambridge, and that most of her professional life was based in England. Anne Whitelaw went on to become the first New Zealand woman to head an English secondary school (Wycombe Abbey, 1910–1925), to head two women’s religious orders (1925–1934) and to be Advisor on Girls’ Education for the Colonial Office Advisory Committee on Education in the New Colonies (1926–1932). She retired to New Zealand and lived the rest of her life there. This case study argues for the application of a number of theoretical lenses in order to construct ‘both sides’ of Anne Whitelaw’s educational career at home and abroad. Its purpose is two‐fold: it provides an opportunity for presenting for the first time, a fuller biographical and career profile of Anne Whitelaw and in so doing, highlights the breadth and depth of the research undertaken on both sides of the world to be able to reach this point.

Career progress and career barriers: women MBA graduates in Canada and the UK

This article explores the career progress of female MBA graduates in Canada and the UK and the nature of career barriers experienced in each context. Results suggest that while Canadian women have similar career profiles to men, women in the UK lag behind their male counterparts after graduation from the course. At the same time, UK women encounter more intractable career barriers in the form of negative attitudes and prejudice. A model of the “MBA effect” is proposed in terms of how the qualification may impact on career barriers. This incorporates three different types of barriers which are seen to operate at the individual level (person centred barriers) and at the intermediate/organizational level (organizational culture and attitudes, corporate practices) as well as, at the macro level, the impact of legislative frameworks. Results from the UK and Canadian surveys are discussed in relation to this model and in the context of feminist theory and women in management literature.

Gender and Disorder Specific Criminal Career Profiles in Former Adolescent Psychiatric In-Patients

A Norwegian nation-wide sample of 1087 former adolescent psychiatric in-patients, 584 males and 503 females, were followed up 15–33 years after first hospitalization. On the basis of detailed hospital records from index hospitalization all were rediagnosed according to DSM-IV. The patient list was linked to the national criminal register and the diagnostic groups were compared as to gender-specific frequency of registered criminality. Next, the criminal career characteristics were compared in those with criminal records at follow-up, relative to mental disorder at index hospitalization. The prevalence of registered criminality, both overall and for specific types of crimes, differed significantly between diagnostic groups and between genders. In both genders criminal convictions were most frequent in disruptive behavior disorders and personality disorders. Among males, the lowest violent crime rate was observed in those with psychotic disorders. Males had more severe criminal careers than females, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The diagnoses and criminal profiles of the 10 most active criminals in the study sample were described closer, as were the 11 individuals found guilty of homicide.

Getting both wheels on the rails: how do academics in South Africa envisage gaining educator competences at the same time as advancing in their disciplines?

When is the best time for novice lecturers to get qualified as educators? Now that there is a SAQA-approved qualification for educators in Higher Education, many HEIs are getting organized to deliver such programmes. But who will be the candidates for such courses? How to weigh up the competing career requirements to advance to PhD or further research in the chosen discipline against embarking on educator programme? How do academics prefer to gain further competences ? This article analyses responses to a questionnaire on this posed to new staff at induction, and also presents typical career profiles in Chemistry as discussed with seminar participants from that department showing the tension between teaching and research pressures. The underlying argument is that systemic changes are needed nationally (through the HEQC) and institutionally (through incentives such as probation or promotion criteria) to promote educator development for all lecturers. Are There Fast Tracks in Economic Departments? Evidence from a Sample of Top Economists

In this paper, we analyze the timing of promotions in academic departments. Contrary to previous attempts in the empirical literature, we test alternative theories of fast tracks by adding a measure of performance in our analysis. We find that learning from past performance is an important factor to explain the time spent as assistant and associate professor. In addition, our analysis shows the existence of a handicapping policy: individuals who had a fast promotion in the past are less likely to be promoted quickly again. We also find that the handicap is relative, that it does not survive the whole career and that it is possible for these individuals to beat it if they achieve a given level of productivity. We interpret our findings as evidence that incentives and sorting matter in academia and that using relative handicaps can help to balance these two concerns. Finally, we look at the productivity pattern of individuals with different career profiles and find that fast tracks are always more productive than their pairs, even after the last promotion, what suggests an effective selection process.
