Análisis socioeducativo de la empatía por los números aplicado a 228 alumnos de la carrera de psicología del Centro Universitario de la Costa U. de G.

El objeto del presente trabajo fue analizar la empatía por los números de estudiantes de la carrera de Psicología del Centro Universitario de la Costa, Universidad de Guadalajara. La muestra estuvo constituida por 228 jóvenes escolarizados, de edades comprendidas entre los 21 y los 24 años, de los cuales 115 eran hombres y 113 mujeres. Los resultados demuestran que los alumnos no sienten empatía por los números debido a que no los entienden, son abstractos y se frustran al no saber realizar las operaciones. Esto ocasiona que abandonen la iniciativa de aprender matemáticas. Se concluye, por tanto, que si no se cambia esta percepción de frustración y miedo al realizar operaciones numéricas, los futuros egresados podrían desaprovechar los beneficios que ese conocimiento ofrece en la vida cotidiana.

Clinical Practice and Clinical Supervision: Building a Firm Foundation

In this paper, the authors report on the “Foregrounding Clinical Practice and Clinical Supervision” working group of the Canadian Counselling Psychology Conference held on October 26 to 28, 2018, at the University of Calgary. Of the 12 working group participants, nine self-identified as students and three identified as licensed practitioners (two of the practitioners also held academic positions). This group of mostly early-career professionals identified an overarching theme of building a firm foundation for their future practice. Working group members identified three important contributors: the development of a strong, multi-faceted professional identity, including issues of licensure and certification, the interplay between counselling and clinical psychology, and the place of career psychology; the importance of clinical supervision, including the perceived variable quality of supervision and the apparent shortage of practicum placements; and professional role models. The authors provide their perspectives on the issue the working group raised and offer recommendations for counsellor educators and practice leaders.

The Double-Edged Sword Effects of Career Calling on Occupational Embeddedness: Mediating Roles of Work–Family Conflict and Career Adaptability

Based on the conservation of resource theory, we proposed a two-path model to examine the double-edged sword effects of career calling on occupational embeddedness via work-family conflict (WFC) and career adaptability. The proposed theoretical model and hypotheses were tested by structural equation modeling technology with a sample of nurses from five hospitals in China (total N=368). Career calling has a double-edged sword effect on occupational embeddedness via WFC and career adaptability. Career calling has positive effects on WFCand career adaptability. WFC and career adaptability, in turn, negatively and positively influence occupational embeddedness, respectively. In addition to the well-established positive effects, career calling may also have adverse effects on occupational outcomes. Given the worldwide shortage of nursing staff, how career calling affects nurses' occupational embeddedness needs to be more understood. This study highlights the importance of career calling and occupational embeddedness. Nurse managers need to improve the level of nurses' career adaptability and reduce their level of WFC and hence increase their occupational embeddedness.

Perceptions of Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis About Their Career and Illness: The Case of Turkey

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common neurological disorders that is difficult to predict and prevent in the world. In parallel to the physiological effects of MS, the unpredictable changes involved in the illness influence the process of planning for the future. From this point of view, this study is intended to examine the career trajectory of people with MS. To better understand how MS-related changes impact the career trajectories of people with MS, interviews were completed with 10 individuals with MS living and working in Turkey with a focus on the career development process. The results indicate that people with MS experience physical, mental, and psychological symptoms and career barriers; however, they adjust to these symptoms with some strengths and coping strategies. The most common career path in this study is continuing, which means participants tried to deal with their illnesses, and stated their wish to be promoted in their fields by meeting the requirements. Finally, participants also reported receiving support from different resources such as family, supervisors, and colleagues and having altruistic values.

Lawrence S. Wrightsman (1931–2019).

Lawrence ("Larry") Samuel Wrightsman Jr. was born in Houston, Texas, on October 31, 1931, son of a schoolteacher and a petroleum engineer, and was raised in the River Oaks neighborhood. In the early 1940s, Wrightsman participated in a national radio show called Quiz Kids while 10 years old and still in elementary school; he later described this as his "intellectual peak." Larry majored in psychology at Southern Methodist University, minoring in journalism. He served as editor of the college newspaper and worked as a reporter for the Houston Post. He left journalism to study measurement and mass communications at the University of Minnesota, but a seminar with Stanley Schachter enticed him into social psychology. His 1959 dissertation on anxiety and affiliation was supervised by Schachter. Larry always had a deeply held interest in civil rights and racial justice. Larry was known by many generations of undergraduates for his outstanding textbooks in social psychology. Wrightsman's texts were deeply inspiring to students. At conferences, graduate students and young professors would often gush about how one of his texts had changed their worldview and inspired them to seek a career in psychology. In the 1980s, Larry developed an interest in psychology's potential contributions to legal issues and began a research program on jury decision-making. Larry was also instrumental in laying the foundations of psychology and law. By the numbers, Larry's contributions were extraordinary. He authored and edited over 50 published books. His last book, Ten Little-Known Facts About the Supreme Court (2016), is still available on Amazon.com. Larry was in a wheelchair for the last 6 years of his life, yet after his retirement he published four chapters and finished five authored or edited books. El presente artículo presenta la exploración de las dimensiones de análisis implicadas en la inscripción de un nacimiento en internación temprana. I wrote this chapter during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. How coincidental it is to be writing a reflective memoir at a time when it is hard to avoid reflecting. I had not thought I could tackle this project until well into the year, but sequestration at a rented house in South Carolina gave me time and so the pages multiplied in a different way. With this said, what is omitted is often the most important material for reflection - the emotional moments of childhood and the feelings that come with each turn of event. This is to be an account of things I may have learned, however “wise,” for graduate students or others who would have careers in education and psychology, so it lacks a colorful narrative. The chapter is organized as much by experience as chronology, with six key sections. Readers can find one-sentence lessons signaled by underlined material located at the start of some paragraphs within each key section.

Applying career human agency theory to practice

This article elaborates the emerging career human agency theory and its applicability to career psychology practice. Using Bandura’s human agency theory as a foundation, career human agency theory is a meta-theory that integrates key tenets from major theories in vocational and career psychology. It presents an endeavour of theoretical integration to conceive and understand career issues and vocational behaviours. The article provides a brief overview of career human agency theory, indicating its postmodern constructivist and constructionist worldview in conceptualizing life-career phenomena, while integrating life and career experiences into a dynamic and coherent whole. To this end, the four pillar theoretical principles and constructs of career human agency theory are reviewed, namely, career intentionality, career forethought, career self-reactiveness, and career self-reflectiveness. Furthermore, the article considers and explains the usefulness of the four constructs as they are applied to professional helping and self-helping processes that improve and enhance the vocational wellness of individuals, connecting career human agency theory to practice. In doing so, the article concludes with a case study illustration to demonstrate how these career human agency theory constructs and their related tenets and ideas can inform and guide career development practice and career counselling interventions, utilizing and strengthening agentic functioning in individuals’ worklife wellbeing.

El propósito de este estudio es describir las perspectivas que posee el estudiantado ingresante a la carrera de Psicología de una universidad argentina de gestión estatal, acerca de la lectura en la escolaridad secundaria y en contextos académicos. Se entrevista a 27 estudiantes del primer año de la mencionada carrera y se analizan estas entrevistas en función de categorías emergentes y que se desprenden del marco teórico. Los resultados muestran que los estudiantes con rendimiento académico alto perciben continuidades entre las prácticas lectoras del secundario y las de la universidad, y los que tienen un rendimiento bajo, diferencias sustantivas entre las mismas. Las continuidades y las diferencias se relacionan con las clases de textos y con las prácticas pedagógicas docentes. Estos hallazgos permiten entrever las diferencias derivadas de la escolaridad de base y la necesidad de abordar en las aulas universitarias la enseñanza de la lectura disciplinar en cada asignatura.

Psychological career resources as explanatory mechanisms of employee adaptive career concerns across the career-life period

This study explored employee psychological resources as explanatory mechanisms of their adaptive career concerns. Participants were 315 predominantly black (39%) and female (70%) working adults (mean age = 37 years; SD = 9.77 years) employed in the South African services industry. Participants completed the Psychological Career Resources Inventory and the Psychosocial Career Preoccupations Scale. Multiple regression analysis showed the psychological career resources of career preferences and career values to significantly explain higher levels of preoccupations with person-environment fit and adaptation. Career values also seemed to explain higher levels of career establishment and work/life adjustment concerns. The career drivers and career harmonisers represented career self-management capacities that seemed to significantly explain lower levels of career adaptation and work/life adjustment concerns because of the intrinsic motivation to self-renew. The findings suggest the need for workplace career development practices to help employees capitalise on their psychological career resources when engaging in career adaptive behaviours across the career-life period.

The catalyst for this book was Dr Kaufman’s personal journey as a twice exceptional (2e) individual. He acknowledged the difference a special education teacher had on the trajectory of his academic journey and successful career in cognitive psychology. It was his desire to engender an awareness of the concomitance of giftedness and disabilities, with the hope that unserved students with 2e would be recognised and supported.

공학계열 대학생의 심리적 · 환경적 진로장벽이 진로준비행동에 미치는 영향: 희망과 진로정체감의 매개효과

본 연구는 공학계열 대학생이 지각하는 심리적 · 환경적 진로장벽이 진로준비행동에 미치는 영향을 파악하고, 희망과 진로정체감의 매개효과를 검증하기 위해 이루어졌다. 이를 위해 서울, 경기, 충북, 충남, 경북, 강원 소재의 4년제 대학교 여덟 곳에서 공학계열 대학생을 대상으로 온라인 설문을 실시하여 심리적 · 환경적 진로장벽, 희망, 진로정체감, 진로준비행동을 측정하였다. 수집된 자료 407부를 바탕으로 변인 간 관계를 검토하고 구조방정식 모형 분석을 통해 모형의 적합도 및 직접효과와 매개효과의 유의성을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 심리적 진로장벽은 진로준비행동에 직접 영향을 미치지 않고 희망과 진로정체감을 매개로 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 환경적 진로장벽은 진로준비행동에 직접 정적영향을 미쳤으며, 희망과 진로정체감을 매개로 영향을 미쳤다. 본 연구 결과는 공학계열 대학생의 진로교육 및 상담 장면에서 희망과 진로정체감을 높이는 개입이 이들이 심리적 · 환경적 진로장벽을 극복하고 진로준비행동을 할 수 있도록 도울 수 있음을 시사하였다.

The Career Human Agency Theory

The authors propose a constructivist theory of career human agency to integrate and update the existing career theoretical models to better address the current postmodern zeitgeist. The career human agency theory (CHAT) represents a metatheory of career psychology guided by the principles of Bandura’s human agency framework and informs career development practice and counseling interventions. CHAT promotes the enactment of personal, proxy, and collective agency in the face of uncertainty and adversity. This article describes 4 pillar principles of career agency and provides concrete examples for career counseling application.

Hindsight is 2020As the parent of a high school student who is currently looking at colleges and trying to figure out what she wants to be when she grows up, it has prompted me to think back on my own experience and career trajectory. Admittedly, the climate in higher education and in libraries is very different from what it was when I first determined I wanted to be a librarian. And my daughter, while interested in information and research, is seriously considering pursuing a career in psychology (and foreign languages). Nonetheless, it puts in mind of how individuals arrive at these decisions (or stumble onto these career paths), which ultimately lead us to where we are. That is not to say that we can’t change course individually or as an organization or a profession. Certainly, there have been numerous discussions about how the profession and higher education are changing—constantly—and being driven by too many factors to mention.

This article explores the acceptance and commitment therapy hexaflex in the context of an assistant psychologist aspiring to pursue a career in clinical psychology. The piece aims to highlight the resilience required and challenges that may be faced during this journey. I explore each corner of the hexaflex, often describing my experience becoming ‘stuck’. However, I am able to reflect on the skills I have developed throughout my career and doctorate of clinical psychology application journey, which have allowed me to move towards gaining psychological flexibility and acceptance of my current situation.
