Embracing Freedom in Learning: The Impact of Kurikulum Merdeka on Engineering Students of Universitas Negeri Medan

In 2020, Indonesia's Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology introduced the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) curriculum for higher education to better prepare students for the modern job market. This study contrasts the MBKM curriculum with the non-MBKM curriculum, focusing on their impacts on students' career exploration and professional maturity. Using a quantitative, correlational approach, the study sampled 187 engineering students from a Medan university. Instruments included the Career Exploration Survey (CES) and the Career Development Inventory (CDI). Results showed that both curricula positively influence career exploration and professional maturity, with no significant differences between the two. The MBKM curriculum's emphasis on real-world experience and career preparation was highlighted as a key factor in fostering career readiness. The study concludes that both curricula effectively support career development, but the MBKM curriculum offers a more practical, hands-on approach to preparing students for the workforce.

Personality predictors of career exploration: A meta‐analysis

AbstractIn this meta‐analysis, correlations of personality traits and career decision‐making self‐efficacy with self and environmental career exploration were estimated across 71 samples and a pairwise sample of 19,846. Traits included the Big Five personality traits, shyness, locus of control, vocational decision styles, and stress. Many measures of career exploration were based on scores of self and environmental exploration on the Career Exploration Survey. Results varied by characteristics with the largest effects for locus of control, vocational decision style: thinking‐feeling and self‐efficacy. Environmental exploration and self‐exploration were moderately correlated and demonstrated different relations with traits that were consistent with theory. Self‐exploration was related to openness to experience and unrelated to extraversion, while environmental exploration was correlated with extraversion. Both were similarly correlated with conscientiousness such that conscientious individuals were more likely to engage in career exploration.

The Effectiveness of Strengths-based Career Counseling on Career Exploration, Self-efficacy and Dysfunctional Career Thoughts in Unemployed Female Graduates

Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of strengths-based career counseling on career exploration, career self-efficacy and dysfunctional career thoughts regulation among unemployed graduates. Methods: study was a quasi-experimental research with a pre-post-follow up design and a control group. Research population consisted of all unemployed female graduates in city of Islamabad Gharb in 2018. Convenient sampling method was employed and through inclusion criteria, 28 individuals were selected and then randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (14 in each group). The intervention involved four 90-minute weekly sessions using strengths-based career counseling. The control group did not receive any intervention. Career exploration survey, career self-efficacy scale and dysfunctional career thoughts scale were used to collect data. Data was analyzed using ANCOVA statistical method. Findings: The results showed that there is a significant difference at the post-test stages between experimental and control group in career exploration (P <0.001; F = 68.66; P <0.001; F = 102.99), career self-efficacy (P <0.001; F = 34.31; P <0.001; F = 47.94) and dysfunctional career thoughts (P <0.001; F = 7.89; P <0.001; F = 88.22). Also this difference is stable over the time, at the follow up in three month. Conclusion: It is recommended that executive directors and education officials conduct strengths-based career counseling for students on a large scale.

The Mediating Roles of Core Self-Evaluation and Career Exploration in the Association Between Proactive Personality and Job Search Clarity.

In recent years, university students’ employment has become an increasingly prominent problem worldwide. Improving the job search clarity of students is a great way to boost job-hunting success. Proactive personality may predict job search clarity through the mediating effects of core self-evaluation and career exploration. However, few studies have explored this relationship and the mediating roles of core self-evaluation and career exploration. To identify the relationship between a proactive personality and job search clarity and the mediating roles of core self-evaluation and career exploration, a cross-sectional survey was conducted. A total of 495 students majoring in nursing completed the questionnaire which consisted of the proactive personality scale, core self-evaluation scale, career exploration survey, and job search clarity scale. Correlation analyses and mediation analyses were conducted using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0 respectively. This study showed that students higher on the proactive personality scale were more likely to perform better on job search clarity. Core self-evaluation and career exploration have fully mediating effects on the relationship between a proactive personality and job search clarity. Therefore, interventions concentrated on cultivating proactive personality, improving core self-evaluation, and strengthening career exploration would be necessary for increasing job search clarity.

Role of Career Exploration in Influencing Career Choice among Pre-University Student

In the age of innovation, digitalization, and globalization today, deciding to take a career path has been growing and challenging. The career path continues to increase its stature as a career choice, pursued by many in an evolving, unpredictable, and competitive marketplace. Students’ general career selection process is the first step to ensuring that human resources align with the labor market demands. This study aimed to determine the role of career exploration as a mediator in the relationship between social support and career self-efficacy on career choices among pre-university students. This research is a quantitative and correlational study conducted on students in the Agricultural Science of Foundation program at Universiti Putra Malaysia. By using simple random sampling, 249 students were selected based on Cohen’s calculation. The researchers used the Career Exploration Survey (CES), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale-Short (CDSE-SF), and career choice instrument surveys to measure the variables in this study. The results show that career exploration acts as a partial mediator in the relationship between social support and career self-efficacy on career choice. There is not only a significant relationship between the career exploration and the career choice, but also some direct relationship between the social support, career self-efficacy and career choice. This study provides a basis for reference to academicians and instructors designing the pre-university student curriculum in choosing a career. Teachers are also recommended to play an active role in initiating career exploration activities for students during their learning process.

Online Career Job Dictionary as Media Improving Career Exploration of Junior High School Students

Significantly the development of career exploration occurred at the age of adolescence (15-24 years). Career exploration aims to instill a positive attitude towards the workforce to students, the formation of early job choices, to improve knowledge about the external and the environment and the workforce, as well as how they can be congruent. This research considers students ' career exploration needs as a basis for determining the direction of student career choices in the future. The level of understanding of student career is based on deepening of the material ofathe dictionary of online career (kjko) measured using the instrument ces (career exploration survey).

Parenting Styles Effect on Career Exploration Behavior in Adolescence: Considering Parents and Adolescent Gender

In facing the industrial 4.0 era, adolescents, especially high school students, need to complement their knowledge and skills learnt from school with behaviors that can help their career journey, namely the career exploration behavior (CEB). Referring to the triadic reciprocal determinism theory and gender role in Indonesian culture, this study aimed to examine the effect of parenting styles and gender on CEB. Specifically, this study examined the effect of paternal and maternal parenting styles on CEB in adolescent and compared its effect on boys and girls. Participants in this study were 427 boys and 397 girls with an average age of 17 from nine high schools. Career Exploration Survey and Parental Authority Questionnaire were used to assess participants’ CEB, and paternal and maternal parenting styles. Regression analysis showed different patterns effect of paternal and maternal parenting styles on CEB between boys and girls. For boys, parenting that was found to improve CEB were paternal authoritative parenting and maternal authoritarian parenting, while for girls, parenting that was found to improve CEB were paternal authoritarian parenting and maternal authoritative parenting. These results indicated that boys and girls need different parenting factors from father and mother. Limitation and suggestion are discussed.

Parental attachment bonds, dysfunctional career thoughts and career exploration as predictors of career decision-making self-efficacy of Grade 11 students

ABSTRACT This study investigates the relationship between career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) and parental attachment, dysfunctional career thoughts, and career exploration in a sample of 170 Lebanese Grade 11 students drawn from 10 private schools that provide career guidance services. The following tools were used to assess the variables: Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale – short form (CDMSE-SF), the Parent and Peer Attachment Bonds (IPPA), the Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI), and the Career Exploration survey (CES). Data were analysed using Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple regression. Regression results showed a significant association between parental attachment, dysfunctional career thoughts, career exploration and CDMSE. Career exploration accounted for the largest variance in CDMSE, followed by dysfunctional career thoughts and parental attachment. Theoretical and practical implications for career counselling are discussed.

La exploração vocacional em jovens: Estudo com grupos específicos || Career exploration in young people: Study with specific groups

Apresentam-se dois estudos da exploração vocacional com grupos específicos de adolescentes tendo-se recorrido ao Career Exploration Survey (CES). No primeiro estudo analisou-se o processo de exploração vocacional de 135 jovens institucionalizados comparando-o com o de 184 a viver em famílias recorrendo-se à One-Way MANOVA. No segundo estudo analisou-se o processo de exploração vocacional de 323 jovens que frequentam o ensino profissional, comparando-o com o de 208 do ensino regular recorrendo-se ao T-Test. Com base nos resultados são retiradas implicações para a intervenção de carreira com grupos específicos.

Psychological Intervention in Portuguese College Students: Effects of Two Career Self-Management Seminars

This article describes the evaluation of a psychological intervention—the Career Self-Management Seminar, Version A, for undergraduate students, and Version B for postgraduate students—developed to support Portuguese college students in career exploration, goal setting, design and implementation of action plans, and decision-making. A total of 120 participants from CSMS-A (experimental group, n = 58; control group, n = 62) and 98 from CSMS-B (experimental group, n = 62; control group, n = 36) were assessed by the Career Exploration Survey according to a pretest and posttest plan. Results demonstrate a significant increase in most of the cognitive, behavioral, and affective career exploration dimensions among the CSMS-A and CSMS-B experimental groups.

Calidad en educación superior y orientación: eficacia de un seminario de gestión personal de la carrera para pre graduados

Career services and interventions based on research and empirical evidence are progressively considered mechanisms for quality assurance in higher education. We present a study on the effectiveness of a career self-management seminar designed for help undergraduates prepare for next life career changes and goal attainment. Four hundred and twenty eight students with an age mean of 22 years old (n=208 experimental group; n=220 control group) attending university and polytechnic higher institutions in the northwestern Portugal, were assessed by the Career Exploration Survey, the Career Development Inventory and My Vocational Situation according to a pretest and posttest design. The Seminar is research based and comprises nine weekly small group sessions of 120 minutes each which facilitate students’ career planning, in-depth exploration, goal implementation and feedback competences. Results indicate significant differences between experimental and control groups, with increase in most of the career dimensions, among the experimental group. The career seminar produced a medium mean effect size of .53. The intervention positively affected undergraduates’ career self-management processual behaviors.

Influência da condição de emprego/desemprego dos pais na exploração e indecisão vocacional dos adolescentes

Este estudo centra-se no impacto da condicao de emprego/desemprego dos pais nas crencas, comportamentos e reacoes de exploracao vocacional e na indecisao de carreira dos adolescentes. Foram administradas o Career Exploration Survey e o Career Decision Scale a uma amostra de 321 adolescentes Portugueses, de ambos os sexos (190, 59,2% raparigas; 131, 40,8% rapazes), com idades compreendidas entre os 13 e os 17 anos. Os resultados indicam que os adolescentes filhos de pais desempregados manifestam, significativamente, crencas mais negativas acerca do mercado de trabalho, menos comportamentos exploratorios, e reacoes afetivas mais negativas do que os adolescentes filhos de pais empregados e, consequentemente, niveis mais elevados de indecisao vocacional. Os resultados sao discutidos, retirando-se implicacoes para a intervencao psicologica e salientando-se direccoes para futuras investigacoes.

The validity of a German version of the career exploration survey

This paper reports psychometric properties of a German version of the Career Exploration Survey (CES-G). The instrument’s 16 scales allow for a detailed description of career exploration. Based on data from two studies (N1 = 1023; N2 = 816), confirmatory factor analyses supported the 16-factor model. With regard to construct validity, several CES-G scales were related to subsequent job involvement. Several demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, chronological distance to final school exams) were found to be related to career exploration. The results suggest that the CES-G is a valid and interesting clinical and research tool for assessing career exploration.

The Initial Stage Career Exploration Inventory (ISCEI) was designed to assess career exploration among students in the early stage of making career decisions. The reliability, validity, and applicability of the ISCEI were investigated. In Study 1, responses on the ISCEI from student participants (n = 294 : 69 men, 225 women) were factor analyzed. The results suggested a 3-factor structure consisting of "self-understanding," "information gathering" and "learning from others." Comparison between the ISCEI and self-improvement motive, vocational decisions, and career decision-making self-efficacy scales from the Career Exploration Survey (CES) indicated that the ISCEI had sufficient construct validity. Study 2 investigated the applicability of the ISCEI. The responses of student participants (n = 859 : 451 men, 408 women) on the ISCEI indicated high "self-understanding," neutral "information gathering," and comparatively low "learning from others" scores, which were similarly related to the CES as in Study 1. These findings indicate that the ISCEI can be used as a tool for understanding career exploration among students in the initial stage of making career decision.

INFLUENCE OF CAREER EXPLORATION PROCESS BEHAVIORS ON AGRICULTURE STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF CAREER CERTAINTY

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which career exploration process behaviors influence the level of career certainty of agriculture students. Data were gathered from 181 freshmen and 131 senior students enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University. Career certainty was assessed using items from the Career Decision Scale (Osipow, 1987) Career exploration was assessed using selected career exploration process behavior scales from the Career Exploration Survey (Stumpf, Colarelli, & Hartmann, 1983). Findings indicated that students were relatively certain in having made a decision about a career but only moderately engaged in various career exploratory process behaviors. Stepwise regression analysis revealed that two career exploration process behaviors explained 35% of the variance in the level of career certainty for freshmen, whereas one career exploration process behavior explained 40% of the variance in the level of career certainty for seniors. Thus, to increase students’ level of career certainty, a major focus should be on the extent of career exploration involving self-assessment and retrospection (i.e., Self-Exploration) as well as occupational preferences (i.e., Focus). Implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.

CAREER EXPLORATORY BEHAVIORS OF POSTSECTONDARY AGRICULTURE STUDENTS

The purpose of this study was to explore the extent of career exploratory behaviors of students enrolled in Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Career exploration was measured using the self and environmental exploration scales of the Career Exploration Survey (CES; Stumpf, Colarelli, Hartmann, 1983). A MANOVA indicated significant main effects for year in school for the environmental and self exploration scales. For both the environmental and self exploration scales, seniors scored significantly higher than freshmen, indicating greater use of these career exploration strategies in the career exploration process. Findings of this study were consistent with theory and research suggesting that college students are primarily in the exploration phase of career development. Recommendations and implications for students enrolled in postsecondary programs of agriculture are presented.

Individual characteristics and career exploration in adolescence

The effects of gender, age and school grade on several career exploration dimensions measured by the Career Exploration Survey were investigated. Subjects were high school students facing an imminent career decision. Regression analyses indicated that sex and grade-level were the most significant and prevailing individual characteristics related to the adolescents' career exploration behaviours, reactions and beliefs. Implications for career exploration interventions are discussed.

Development of the Career Exploration Survey (CES)

The development, properties, and uses of the Career Exploration Survey (CES) are described. The CES is intended to (a) facilitate further theory development and empirical research on how exploration affects career decisions, development, and job outcomes, such as job satisfaction, commitment, and turnover; (b) provide a network of variables for investigating the dynamics of the exploration process; and (c) provide a set of criterion measures for examining the effects of personal characteristics and educational treatments on career exploration behaviors and beliefs. The CES is based on a conceptual framework derived from theories of exploration, stress, motivation, and career preference. It consists of seven measures of the career exploration process, three reactions to exploration, and six beliefs about exploration. Dimensionality, reliability, and validity data are presented for four studies comprising 680 observations across 601 individuals.

The Career Exploration Survey: A Summary of its Dimensionality, Reliability, and Validity

Dimensions of career exploration, reactions to exploration, and beliefs about exploration are defined and operationalized through the Career Exploration Survey. The results of several studies which support the survey's dimensionality, reliability, and validity are summarized.
