This article asks whether the transfer rate is increasing, what is causing the rate of the increase, what are the characteristics of the executives who are being transferred, and what policy implications do the results of these questions suggest. The study is based on both a literature and a field survey of 30 corporations. The article reveals that many companies see transfers as a sort of career development tool that is a normal rite of passage for an employee who wants to work his way up through the company. Yet, those companies within the study who had analyzed the costs and benefits of transfers found that many transfers were unnecessary. The article calls for further study of this issue.
