Cohort Survival of the K to 12 Student Entrants Towards the Development of Strategic Interventions Supportive to Cbea-mmsu Programs

The study was undertaken to determine the cohort survival rate of the pioneer batch of the K to 12 student entrants of the eight (8) degree programs at the College of Business, Economics and Accountancy (CBEA), identify the underlying factors triggering the student dropout and institutionalize an intervention program to support the successful retention and graduation of all students. The Reconstructed Cohort Method was used and places less demand on the availability of detailed data over time. This method makes three assumptions: dropouts never return to school; the promotion, repetition and drop-out rates observed in the last two years remain constant over the entire period in which the cohort is enrolled in school and the same rates apply to all students enrolled in a given year level, regardless of whether they previously repeated a subject. A comprehensive analysis on the data gathered was done to process the underlying factors which will serve as valuable inputs in the design of programs and policies to reduce the dropout rate and support the successful retention and graduation of students. Findings showed that the survival rate of the pioneer batch of the K to 12 student entrants of the different programs range from 55.5% (BS Accountancy) to 97.5% (BSBA HRM) or an average of 81.62%. Overall, the survival rate among the males is 84.14% and the females is 80.86%. Majority (81.03%) of the respondents who were not able to finish their schooling on time indicated academic-related as their reason. Others mentioned about personal/family concern (17.24) and one indicated career concern. Some of the suggested interventions supportive to CBEA programs include: the implementation of an institutionalized Academic Advising Program, conduct of series of Academic Advising workshop, Academic Counseling, referral, group counselling, a more aggressive admission interview, parent/guardian conference, peer tutorial, financial assistance program and documentation of academic advising and counseling sessions. In addition, Guidance counselors must be one of the signatories in the dropping out and shifting forms. A replication research study involving different programs in the university is recommended.

Digital technologies and applications in tourist guidance: The dilemma between adopting innovations and career concerns

This study examines tourist guides’ self-evaluations of innovative technologies, focusing on digital transformation in tourist guidance services. With the qualitative research design, in-depth interviews were conducted with professional tourist guides, and the findings were revealed by thematic analysis. While tourist guides adopt the diffusion of innovations related to “technical features” and “individualized services” dimensions of digital technology used in tourism, there is a tendency to show resistance to “tour quality” and “career concern.” As a result, it has been revealed that strengthening professional tourist guidance with tourist guidance digital technologies will improve visitor–tourist guide interaction.

Career‐related parental support and learning engagement: Exploring the mediation pathways of career adaptability and life meaning

AbstractParents greatly affect youth's vocational and educational development. The objective of the study was to investigate how parental support in career development affects adolescents’ learning engagement and the mediating effects of four career adaptability aspects and life meaning. The participants were 516 high school students from Guangdong, China. The study found that: (1) Career‐related parental support had a positive impact on learning engagement; (2) career confidence and life meaning acted as mediators connecting career‐related parental support with learning engagement; and (3) there was a chain mediation path among career‐related parental support, career concern, control, and confidence, life meaning, and learning engagement. Our findings add to the prevailing literature by confirming and extending self‐determination theory as well as career development and systems theory. Based on these findings, we hope that schools and parents may implement some interventions to promote the academic engagement of students.

Adolescents with strong life purpose report greater career maturity

AbstractIn this study, we examined the role of sense of life purpose (awakening to purpose, awareness of purpose, and altruistic purpose) in career maturity (concern, curiosity, confidence, and consultation) among adolescents (N = 234). Adolescents with a strong awareness of purpose reported high career curiosity, high career confidence, and low career consultation. Adolescents with altruistic purpose reported high career concern but low career confidence. Awakening to purpose, on the other hand, did not significantly contribute to career maturity. Overall, findings suggest the importance of providing support as adolescents explore various career options within the context of their life's purpose.

Promote or Inhibit: CEO Career Concerns and Enterprise Digital Transformation

The digital transformation of Chinese enterprises is imperative, and digital transformation is a typical long-cycle strategic decision, so it is necessary to analyze the motivation of digital transformation from the perspective of time, especially career. However, there is little research to discuss the impact of key role CEOs on digital transformation based on their career tradeoffs. Therefore, this paper chooses manufacturing enterprises as research samples to study the relationship between CEO career concerns and enterprise digital transformation. This paper finds that there is an inverted U-shaped nonlinear relationship between CEO's career concerns and enterprise digital transformation; Within a certain range, CEO career concerns positively promotes digital transformation, but after a certain threshold, it inhibits digital transformation. This inverted U-shaped relationship is weakened by the increasing power intensity of the CEO and the short-sightedness of management. This paper describes the role of CEO in the digital process from the perspective of career concern, expands the antecedents of digital transformation, and provides some implications for enterprises to promote digital transformation.

The Effects of Client Importance and Career Concerns on Auditors’ Judgment Conservatism

ABSTRACT We examine how client importance affects judgment conservatism depending on auditors’ career concerns. We argue that auditors will interpret being assigned to a client of major importance as a more powerful signal of their promotion chances under strong competition than under weak competition for advancement and, hence, that they will consider their promotion opportunities to a greater extent in their judgments. We therefore predict that auditors exhibit more conservatism in their judgments regarding more important clients when competition for advancement is strong but not when it is weak. Using an experiment, we generally find results in line with this prediction. Unexpectedly, yet interestingly, we also find that less important clients are judged less conservatively under strong competition than under weak competition for advancement. This study aims to examine the effect of Financial Report Quality, CEO Article Career Concern, and CEO Gender on Investment Efficiency with Good Governance as a Moderating variable. This research method uses Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) with Eviews statistical tools. This study uses a sample of 680 observations of non-financial companies in Indonesia during 2022 using panel regression. The results showed that the quality of financial statements has no effect on investment efficiency. The quality of financial statements that has no effect is possible because the overinvestment scenario also has no effect. In this condition, the quality of financial statements has not been able to mitigate the occurrence of overinvestment due to the high agency level. Meanwhile, in underinvestment conditions, the quality of financial reporting has a significant positive effect, which means that the quality of financial reporting can reduce underinvestment because the quality of financial reporting can be used to attract external funds so that the company avoids underinvestment conditions. The career concern variable of the president director has no effect on investment efficiency, this is possible because in underinvestment conditions it also has no effect because most sample companies do not experience funding constraints so that the career concern of the president director does not mitigate underinvestment. Meanwhile, in overinvestment conditions, it has a positive effect. Thus, the concern of the CEO can reduce the occurrence of overinvestment. Good governance variables affect investment efficiency.

The ESG performance influence mechanism analysis-based on empirical analysis.

ESG has emerged as a prominent method for evaluating enterprises, gaining increasing importance in recent years. It assesses a company's ability to promote sustainable economic development and fulfill its social responsibilities, encompassing three non-financial dimensions: environmental, social, and corporate governance. Regulatory authorities, industry associations, and investment institutions worldwide have placed growing emphasis on a company's ESG performance. From the perspective of career concern, this study conducted a multiple regression analysis using data from Chinese A-share companies listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2011 to 2020. It used CEO shareholding and CEO political affiliation as moderating variables to examine the impact of CEO career concerns on the corporate environment, society, and corporate governance performance. Empirical testing of whether CEO career concerns promote or suppress the ESG performance in enterprises. The findings of this study reveal that CEOs with heightened career concerns tend to impede the ESG performance of their respective enterprises. Additionally, CEO shareholding and political affiliations exert a negative moderating influence on the relationship between CEO career concerns and ESG performance. This research significantly extends the investigation into factors influencing ESG performance, offering fresh perspectives that could inform improved CEO oversight, foster corporate transformation, and enhance ESG performance.

Investor attention and corporate social responsibility of family businesses in Vietnam: The moderating role of CEO overpower.

This study examines the influence of investor attention and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) power on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) within Vietnamese family businesses. Unlike most of the past literature, this study further investigates the potential moderating effects of CEOs' power on the relationship between investor attention and CSR. Utilizing the dynamic system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), this study analyzes a dataset comprising 116 Vietnamese family businesses from 2005 to 2020. The findings reveal an inverted U-shape between CEO power and CSR within family businesses; meanwhile, investor attention demonstrates a negative impact on CSR. Moreover, the results report that CEO power is a moderating factor in the relationship between investor attention and CSR. These results are consistent with various theoretical frameworks, including agency theory, overinvestment, career concern, career horizon, and conflict-resolution hypotheses. Finally, our study offers management implications to foster the sustainable development of CSR within family businesses, particularly within emerging markets.

Understanding Career Construction and Acculturation Strategies Among Chinese International Students in Australia

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the career adaptability and the acculturation of Chinese international hospitality students, enrolled in an Australian university. Furthermore, the study explored how their career adaptability and acculturation are related. The methodology included a thematic analysis of 19 semi-structured interviews with Chinese international hospitality students enrolled at a Southeast Queensland Australian University. The results showed that the career adaptability (career control and career concern) were driven by the students’ own agency or family influences. Furthermore, I found that the students were either host or home culture oriented, and they acculturated mainly through work/internships, socializing and group work at university. Finally, I found that acculturation has an impact on international students’ career adaptability, and that the students’ career adaptability also affects their acculturation.

CFO Career Concerns and Strategic Decisions: An Empirical Analysis of M&As

Chief financial officers (CFOs) have become increasingly involved in strategic decisions. The literature has emphasized the potential benefits of this development, delineating CFOs as impartial advisors who ensure economically conscious decisions. Our study, however, suggests that the career concerns of CFOs create signaling incentives that detrimentally influence the outcomes of strategic decisions. Based on the merger and acquisition (M&A) decisions of S&P 500 firms between 2005 and 2018, our results show that CFOs with higher signaling incentives (i.e., at earlier and later career stages) are associated with lower M&A returns, higher M&A premiums, greater M&A activity, and riskier M&A features (e.g., large, diversified, or cross-border deals). This association is stronger when chief executive officers are more likely to delegate decision authority to CFOs, whereas it is weaker when CFOs have a higher reputation, strong long-term incentives, and when there is strong external monitoring. Our results further indicate that the labor market highly values the M&A experience of CFOs and only lightly punishes CFOs involved in value-destroying M&As.

실용무용계열 학생들의 진로 고민 및 탐색 과정 분석

Objectives The purpose of the study is to provide basic data necessary to improve and develop the curriculum for career exploration and revitalize career education by understanding the actual experiences of students in the field of practical dance and examining the process of contemplating and exploring their careers. Methods This study selected 6 participants based on the theoretical sampling method and conducted in-depth interview. As for the analysis, the study adopted 3-step analysis proposed by Strauss and Corbin(1998), and con-ducted open coding, axial coding, selective coding, and also conducted member check and peer debriefing in en-tire process of analysis and interpretation to secure the veracity of the data. Results 132 concepts, 31 subcategories, and 20 categories were derived through ‘categorization of the career worries and exploration process of practical dance students’, which is an open coding. In ‘Structuring the Career Concerns and Exploration Process of Practical Dance Students’, an axis coding, a paradigm model was presented by conducting a paradigm analysis, and the attributes and dimensions of the categories corresponding to each component were analyzed. Finally, the core category of “Constructing the Career Concerns and Exploration Process of Practical Dance Students” was derived, and the connection between them was reaffirmed in the proc-ess of describing the results derived from the story outline development as a single story. Based on this, it was found that in the process of contemplating and exploring career paths, the contextual condition of “university edu-cation environment” and the mediating condition of “changed practical use environment” are important factors that affect career decisions. Conclusions The process of practical use students contemplating and exploring their careers deepened their worries about their careers and showed that they were determined by various attempts and efforts as they faced unstable reality amid various personal, social, and environmental factors. In the future, it is necessary to provide high-quality education to develop various career-related capabilities of practical dance majors and further re-search that can serve as the basis for improving the working environment and expanding the industry.

Incentives from Career Concerns in a Contract Package: An Empirical Investigation

This paper empirically studies the extent to which career concerns as part of a typical contract offer influence employees’ work performance in a Japanese auto dealership firm. Because career movements and base-wage adjustments rely on performance evaluation over time, we develop a dynamic structural model that allows concerns for future payoffs to impact an employee’s current work effort. A reform in personnel-management policies of the firm during the data period enables us not only to compare the performances across individuals, but also to compare within an individual the performance before and after the reform—this enhances the model identification. Our estimation results show that the added value from career movements on top of the monetary payoffs is more important than the monetary payoffs. Individuals respond to career movements and commissions differently, mainly due to varying cost of effort and different payoffs from career movements. Our counterfactual exercises suggest that, compared with the scenario when there is only monetary compensation, adding career movements in a contract package will greatly improve the firm’s gross profit. The firm can improve its net profit by making commission and promotion more performance-based. This paper was accepted by Matt Shum, marketing.
