Exploring Primary School Pupils’ Career Aspirations in Ibadan, Nigeria: A Qualitative Approach

Aspiration constitutes a significant social construct, encapsulating the forward-looking mental framework of an individual. Adapting the Social Cognitive Career Theory, this research aimed to delineate the factors influencing the career aspirations of primary school students in their final and penultimate years in Ibadan. Data were amassed via unstructured yet in-depth interviews with 48 pupils, who were chosen using a multi-stage sampling method from two distinct local government areas within Ibadan. Subsequent to collection, the data underwent transcription, coding, and thematic analysis. The study highlighted the prevalence of gender-stereotyped career choices. The research identified that environmental factors exert varying degrees of influence on the pupils' career aspirations, whereas perceived academic capabilities play a pivotal role in shaping these aspirations. Based on these findings, it is recommended to incorporate comprehensive career guidance and development programs within the primary education curriculum in Ibadan.

The Influence of the Student Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) on Career Aspirations Moderated by Self-Leadership among Alumni of the Global UGRAD Bachelor's Program

This study aims to investigate the influence of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) on alumni career aspirations and the role of self-leadership as a moderator of career aspirations among Global UGRAD alumni for the academic year 2022-2023. Employing quantitative techniques, including a 4-point Likert scale and explanatory analysis, data were collected from 85 alumni representing 33 countries. The validity test confirms the credibility of all items, while subsequent reliability tests establish their consistency. Results from hypothesis testing indicate that the student exchange program (Global UGRAD) does not significantly influence career aspirations because the P value is 0.153 > 0.05. However, student exchange program (Global UGRAD) has a significant positive influence on self-leadership as the P value is 0.000 < 0.05. Furthermore, self-leadership has a positive and significant influence on career aspirations as the P value is 0.004 < 0.05. Additionally, it was found that self-leadership can moderate the relationship between the student exchange program (Global UGRAD) and career aspirations as the P value is 0.015 < 0.05. These findings highlight the importance of fostering self-leadership skills for enhancing career aspirations among students participating in international exchange programs (Global UGRAD).

Intelligent Talent Recommendation Algorithm for College Students for the Future Job Market

An intelligent talent recommendation algorithm is a sophisticated system that utilizes advanced data analysis techniques and machine learning algorithms to match individuals with suitable job opportunities or educational programs. By analyzing a wide range of data points such as skills, qualifications, work experience, and preferences, these algorithms can generate personalized recommendations tailored to each individual's unique profile and career goals. Moreover, intelligent talent recommendation algorithms continuously learn and improve over time, refining their recommendations based on user feedback and performance data. This paper presents an intelligent talent recommendation algorithm tailored for college students preparing for the future job market, utilizing Ranking Hidden Chain Deep Learning (RHC-DL). The algorithm aims to provide personalized recommendations by analysing students' skills, qualifications, interests, and career aspirations. Through simulated experiments and empirical validations, the efficacy of the RHC-DL-enhanced recommendation algorithm is evaluated. Results demonstrate significant improvements in recommendation accuracy and relevance compared to traditional methods. For instance, students using the RHC-DL algorithm reported a 40% increase in job offer acceptance rates and a 30% improvement in job satisfaction levels. Additionally, the algorithm adapts and learns from user interactions, continuously refining its recommendations based on real-time feedback.

Exploring the Varying Interest in Rural Medicine and Associated Factors Among Medical Students in Japan: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and objective Examining the factors influencing the career aspirations of medical students is imperative for understanding their orientation towardrural medicine. Such an investigation can serve as a basis for shaping medical education curricula dedicated to nurturing rural focus. Although previous studies have categorized students based on the presence or absence of orientation toward rural medicine and explored their sociodemographic characteristics, thesestudents may not constitute a homogeneous group; their interests can range from aspiring to establish residence and professional practice in a specific region to being merely willing to endure brief regional placements. There is a scarcity of comprehensive examination of the extent and potential variations of rural orientation in the literature. Our survey addresses this gap by exploring the variations in rural orientation among medical students and the differences in their sociodemographic characteristics and preferred specialties based on their degree of rural orientation. Methods We classified medical students into four groups according to their levels of rural orientation: demonstrating proactive engagement towards it, considering it for a defined duration, indicating a preference for avoiding it, and considering it unfeasible. The distribution within each group was investigated. A subsequent analysis of rural orientation and its associated sociodemographic characteristics was performed: a conventional dichotomous study was conducted based on the presence or absence of rural orientation, and a focused study compared students actively interested in rural healthcare with other students. This approach enabled us to explore differences in the degree of rural orientation and associated factors. Results The studyincluded 531 students, with 89 participants demonstrating proactive engagement towards rural medicine, 283 considering it for a defined period, 95 indicating an inclination to avoid it, and 63 students stating that it is unfeasible for them. Associated sociodemographic characteristics were explored based on the presence or absence of rural orientation and included recommendations for admission by a designated high school, the presence of a physician role model, and aspirations for obstetrics and gynecology departments. Conversely, when exclusively focusing on students with a desire for proactive engagement in rural medicine, positive correlations were observed withcharacteristics such as being from the same non-urban prefecture as that of the university where the study was conducted, having a history of residing in a rural area, having a physician role model, and expressing aspirations for general practice or family medicine. Aspiring to be an organ-specific specialist showed a negative correlation with high levels of rural orientation. Conclusions Based on our findings, rural orientation is not uniform among medical students; distinct levels of this aspectwere observed, each associated with different sociodemographic factors.

Family Culture's Impact on Chinese Students' Employment Intention

In 2022, a record 4.57 million individuals in China sat for the postgraduate entrance exam, yet only 1.1 million were admitted to graduate programs. Amidst this intense local competition, the allure of studying overseas has grown among Chinese families, with Thailand emerging as a favored destination due to its affordability and conducive Chinese cultural environment. This research aims to explore how family cultural capital influences the career aspirations of Chinese students in Thailand, focusing particularly on how parental educational expectations act as a mediator in this process. Utilizing a survey method, the study gathered 344 valid responses for analysis. Through descriptive statistics, correlation, and mediation effect analyses, it was found that in Thailand, the cultural capital of a Chinese student's family significantly boosts their career intentions. Moreover, such cultural capital profoundly affects parental expectations regarding education, which in turn positively influences students' career plans. The study highlights the mediating role of parental educational expectations in linking family cultural capital with students' job aspirations. The findings advocate for the importance of nurturing family cultural capital and reducing disparities in cultural capital among families. It recommends moderating parental expectations to lessen the academic load on students, based on the insights gained from the research.

Demographic Factors Influencing Career Aspirations of Secondary School Students in Kwara State, Nigeria

The study investigated the demographic factors influencing the career aspirations of secondary school students in Kwara State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. Five research hypotheses were raised to guide the study. Simple and stratified random techniques were adopted to draw a total of 600 participants across the three senatorial Districts of Kwara State. Gregor and O’Brien’s Career Aspiration Scale-Revised was used with the reliability coefficients of the three subscales ranging between 0.76 and 0.92. t. Test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistics were used to test the six null hypotheses at a 0.05 significance level. Descriptive statistics were used for the demographic data. The results revealed that students’ career aspirations are influenced by gender, age, ordinal order and socioeconomic status but not by religion. Based on the findings, it was recommended that parents should relate well with their children and have a positive perception towards their ordinal positions. Career guidance/vocational counsellors should assist parents by providing them with information and support. School counsellors should collaborate with other school stakeholders to help students vocationally and educationally.

A quasi-experimental evaluation of student academic performances in single sex secondary classrooms

Teacher beliefs and environmental conditions influence student performance outcomes. In this non-equivalent comparison quasi-experimental design study, students enrolled in ten secondary Principles of Agriculture courses assigned to a control or treatment group based upon their sexual identity. Teachers were asked periodically about their expectations of student performances. Over the course of the academic semester, students within the treatment group maintained higher grade point averages and better attendance. Boys from the treatment group maintained a higher percent of non-discipline referrals than boys from the control group. In addition, correlations are made between the teachers’ expectations, and student performance and career aspirations. The researchers recommend that secondary schools consider single-sex classrooms for entry-level agricultural courses and for additional research to be considered to further strengthen the preliminary findings.

The The Influence of Construction Site Internships in Architecture Education

This study examines the impact of internships and the influence of construction site manager (CSM) as a role model on students' educational and career paths, employing Kolb's experiential learning theory as a theoretical framework. To address the research objectives, a questionnaire was conducted on 93 architecture students, focusing on four key research questions: (1) Does the internship experience affect students' perception of CSMs? (2) Does it influence their career goals related to CSM positions? (3) Does the internship experience alter the career aspirations of intern students regarding the career as a construction site manager? and (4) Do students perceive CSMs as role models after completing their internships? The findings show how internships significantly affect students, improving their comprehension of the CSM role, influencing their aspirations for their careers, and offering life-changing experiences. It is anticipated that these findings will significantly advance the field of architecture education and have applications in curriculum development, internship program design and execution, and career counseling services, especially in underdeveloped or developing countries.

The Role of Culture in Student’ Career Aspirations: A Preliminary Study

Background: A person's future job expectations are a type of career aspiration that students should have. A good career plan will lead to the satisfaction of life's requirements. The values are transmitted by parents as well as the cultural context of playing a role in one's career aspirations. Study aims: The purpose of this study is to study a systematic review of the influencing factors and the impact of career aspirations on students with collectivism and individualism cultural backgrounds to identify the gaps that occur in the two cultures. Method: The PRISMA strategy is used as an approach in a systematic review. Selection of articles using inclusion criteria; (1) research articles in the last 10 years (2013-2023); (2) articles in English; (3) available in full text; and (4) using quantitative and qualitative methods. Article search using SpringerLink, Scopus, ScienceDirect, EBSCHO, JSTOR, Proquest , and Google Scholar databases. The keywords used are Aspirations and Careers, with a combination of Teenagers and Students. Conclusion: The basic review found that there were differences in the career aspirations of students with cultural backgrounds. The role of the family in determining student careers is stronger in collectivism culture than individualism. Personal interests are considered as the main thing in career aspirations in adolescents with a cultural background of individualism.

Passion for nature: global student motivations for forestrelated education and career aspirations

Despite the relevance of forests to biodiversity and climate change, education and careers related to them are still unattractive to young people. This paper presents findings from a study whose goal is to investigate the motivation and career aspirations of students in forest-related programmes at the university/tertiary level around the globe. The analysis is based on data gathered through a survey of 787 bachelor's, master's, and PhD students from 82 countries. The findings reveal that the choice of forest-related programmes by students is guided by (i) the desire to do beneficial work, specifically to make a positive difference for the environment/communities, (ii) job satisfaction, e. g., enjoyable work, and (iii) working outdoors. With regard to career pathways, students were most interested in working in forest-related nature and biodiversity conservation and least interested in forest-related industry and non-forest-related fields. The study found significant differences across continents regarding student preferences but only a few across study levels and gender. This paper provides useful insights that can help in tailoring forest-related programmes to meet the expectations of the students and universities.

Career aspirations as a predictor of academic achievement of learners with hearing impairment in special secondary schools in north eastern Nigeria

This study focused on career aspirations as predictor of academic achievement among learners with hearing impairment in special schools in North eastern Nigeria. Correlation research design was adopted for the study. Total 351 learners with hearing impairment in Senior Secondary Two (SS II) was selected based on multistage sampling technique across five special schools in North Eastern Nigeria. The instruments for data collection are Learners’ Career Aspiration Questionnaire (LCAQ), and English Language Pro forma (ELP). Data gathered from the respondents were analyzed using Pearson product moment correlation and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) at a 0.05 alpha level. The study found a strong relationship between career aspiration and academic achievement of learners with hearing impairment in English language in North Eastern, Nigeria. However, gender did not correlate with career aspiration of students with hearing impairment toward their academic achievement. The study concludes that career aspiration can independently enhance students’ academic performance. The study recommends among others that teachers should work toward boosting career aspiration of their students through constructive teaching approach that will make education look achievable and admirable to them.

Using E-Textiles to Challenge Gender Perceptions in STEM, Design and Career Aspirations of Secondary School Students

STEM subjects in the secondary school curriculum are largely the domain of boys, and the creative arts subjects are predominantly the territory of girls. This disparity permeates into higher education and leads to a gender imbalance in the workforce. This paper investigates issues of gender bias in the secondary school curriculum and explores student perceptions and self-efficacy for future academic success. Using the medium of electronic textiles (e-textiles) the research considers if multidisciplinary and co-design approaches to teaching could create a more gender-equitable environment, bring about a mindset shift in students’ gender perceptions, and alter their perspectives for future university choices. A mixed-gender group of 32 secondary school students from different subject disciplines across science, technology and art and design took part in a year-long study. They were given opportunities to work on a co-design project which sought to break down barriers between subject disciplines and challenge stereotypical perceptions of the “type” and gender of student in each discipline. Students were introduced to an e-textiles project called “ElectroTex” which sought to challenge the current hidden-gendered curriculum. It drew upon curriculum topics from physics, computing, technology and art and design. The research was underpinned by overlapping frameworks of Social Cognitive Theory and Value Expectancy Theory. A mixed methodology approach comprising Action Research and Co-design was sandwiched between pre- and post-project questionnaires which determined how students’ perceptions had altered as a result of the project. The experiential learning demonstrated that students were able to connect science with design and harness the value of their collaborative knowledge by applying it to real life situations. The outcomes show that a multidisciplinary approach to learning can re-frame students’ perspectives on gender in the curriculum, empower them to consider design and science in mutually beneficial contexts, and raise their aspirations for future success.

Career aspirations of senior secondary school students in Eswatini

Understanding the career aspirations of students can inform policymakers and educators on how best they can be supported at society and school levels to facilitate the transition from school to further education and work. Existing literature is not comprehensive on the career aspirations of secondary school students in Eswatini, yet they are important. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the career aspirations of senior secondary school students in Eswatini. The design of the study was a descriptive survey targeting Form-4 students, from eight schools in Eswatini. A total of 180 students were randomly sampled. A questionnaire was developed and used for data collection. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that most of the senior secondary students aspired to be medical doctors, pilots, and actors. Thus, being a medical doctor, pilot and actor were the most desired careers by senior secondary school students in Eswatini. The study recommended that career guidance and counselling officials should organise career expos so that students are exposed to a wide range of career choices. The Relationship Between Parental Attachment and Career Aspirations in Indian Female Undergraduate Students

The purpose of the present study was to examine the career aspirations of Indian female undergraduate students, by utilizing a theoretical framework integrating Attachment Theory and Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT). Data were collected from 157 female Indian undergraduate students at a Liberal Studies college in India to study the contribution of self-reported maternal and paternal attachment security in predicting career aspirations. In particular, the mediating effects of student-reported self-esteem and career decision self-efficacy were examined in the relationship between their perceptions of maternal and paternal attachment security and career aspirations. Secure attachment to mothers, but not fathers, was found to relate to self-esteem and career decision self-efficacy, which in turn predicted career aspirations. Findings from the study contribute to the literature on career aspirations of women in India and lend support for the integration of attachment theory and SCCT. Future research and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Conformity between Choices of Career Goals of Junior High School Students and Parents' Careers

This research is motivated by phenomena related to the suitability and incompatibility between the choice of career aspirations of junior high school students and the careers of their parents. Career selection is influenced by several aspects including genetic influences, childhood experiences and individual needs. This study aims to describe the suitability between the career aspirations of junior high school students and their parents' careers. The research method is quantitative with descriptive research type. The research population was 55 people, a sample of 48 students, using a purposive sampling technique. Collecting data using a career choice questionnaire with a Likert scale model. The results of this study found: choice of career goals on the aspect of genetic influence in the high category (54.2%), choice of career aspirations on the aspect of childhood experience in the medium category (47.9%), choice of career aspirations in aspects of individual needs in the high category (60.4%). It was concluded that the choice of students' career aspirations is in accordance with the career of their parents, then counseling services are needed as a follow-up to determine the suitability of the choice of career aspirations with their talents and potential.

Profile of Student Career Aspirations and Their Implications for Career Guidance Services at SMAN 1 Koto XI Tarusan

This research is motivated by the existence of students who are still confused in deciding their career aspirations towards work or college, the existence of students where they will continue their careers after graduating from high school education. This study aims to determine the profile of the career aspirations of students and their implications for career guidance services at SMAN 1 Koto XI Tarusan in terms of: 1) Aspects of Intention. 2) Attitude Aspect. 3) Behavioral Aspect This type of research is descriptive quantitative. The population of this study was class XII students, totaling 132 students. The sampling technique was carried out using a purposive random sampling technique, namely as many as 57 students who became the research sample. The analysis used in this research is the percentage. The results of this study on the profile of the career aspirations of students and their implications for career guidance services at SMAN 1 Koto XI Tarusan show: 1) Career aspirations seen from the aspect of intention are in many categories. 2) Career aspirations seen from the attitude aspect are in many categories. 3) Career aspirations seen from the behavioral aspect are in many categories. This research is recommended for students to consult with BK teachers about career planning that will be taken.
