Torsional oscillations in constant — velocity drives incorporating two cardan joints: The present state of knowledge and the design of an experimental research

The paper reports a survey and a comparison between theoretical predictions (as well as few experimental findings already known) on dinamic stability of torsional oscillations in two-Cardan-joint constant-velocity drives.

The influence of hardness difference on the frictional and wear behaviour of steel/copper alloy pairs in plane sliding friction under mixed friction conditions

Wear test rigs simulating the conditions experienced by cardan joints in the roll drive spindles of steel works were used to investigate the influence of hardness difference on the friction and wear behaviour of steel/copper alloy pairs under conditions of plane sliding. The results show that the specification and maintenance of a minimum wear hardness difference is a practical and economical industrial wear prevention measure.

Buckling of a flexible shaft under torque loads transmitted by Cardan joints

The century-old Greenhill problem of buckling of a flexible shaft, supported at its ends and loaded by external torques, is reconsidered in the case where the loads are transmitted by Cardan joints. It is found that the critical torque is roughly half the Greenhill value and that it depends discontinuously on the relative position of the Cardan joints in the undeformed and unloaded shaft.
