Preparation of carbon dots-embedded fluorescent carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel for anticounterfeiting applications

Fluorescent inks have been emerged as a desirable encoding technique to enhance anticounterfeiting printing of commercial goods. However, significant drawbacks with fluorescent inks, such as poor durability, low efficiency, and high cost. Herein, we describe the preparation of a self-healing authentication ink based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel immobilized with nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCD) nanoparticles (NPs) for cutting-edge anticounterfeiting applications. Security inks that self-heal are very durable. Under ambient conditions, the prepared NCD@CMC hydrogel could self-heal with a high healing efficiency. It might stick to diverse surfaces such as plastic, glass and paper sheets. The self-healing composite ink demonstrated outstanding photostability under UV light. Straightforward and environmentally friendly method was applied on the agricultural waste of rice straw toward the production of NCD using hydrothermal carbonization in an aqueous medium, and in the presence of NH4OH as an inexpensive passivating agent. The quantum yield (QY) for NCD reached 24.09 %. Various concentrations of NCD NPs were employed to produce self-healable nanocomposite inks with a variety of emission properties. Stamping homogeneous films onto paper surfaces produced a transparent layer. The CIE Lab and emission spectra of prints independently verified the capability of NCD nanocomposite inks to vary their color to blue under UV illumination. To measure the particle diameter of the prepared NCD, their morphological characteristics were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to indicate diameters of 10–25 nm. Utilizing various analytical techniques, the morphology and chemical composition of the fluorescent prints were examined. We examined the mechanical qualities of the stamped papers as well as the rheological characteristics of the ink hydrogel. Due to their colorless appearance, the excitation band of the printed films was peaked at 364 nm, while their emission was peaked at 465 nm. The current smart ink holds high potential for numerous applications like smart packaging and authentication, and shows great promise as a practical and mass production approach for easily creating anticounterfeiting stamps.

L-Arginine carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel releasing nitric oxide to improve wound healing

Chronic cutaneous wounds are characterised by poor wound healing, which may result in infection. The development of a wound dressing for the treatment of chronic wounds caused by diabetes remains a great challenge. Herein, we developed a hydrogel comprising l-arginine (LA) -modified carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CS), with antibacterial and nitric oxide-release properties, that accelerated wound healing by promoting vascular reconstruction. In addition to effective degradability and good biocompatibility, CMC-LA@CS hydrogel exhibited excellent inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus, owing to the presence of chitosan. Additionally, the hydrogels released NO, benefiting angiogenesis and promoting wound healing. This safe, antibacterial, and collaborative system has great potential for application in skin tissue engineering.

Adsorption removal of arsenic from Aqueous solution by carboxy methyl Cellulose(CMC) modified with montmorillonite

In this research, CMC/MMT nano composite was prepared using the free radical polymerization method and evaluated as Arsenic ions removal adsorption from an aqueous solution. We used the Design expert (CCD) to remove Arsenic Ions optimally. SEM, XRD and FTIR analyses were used to determine the adsorbent properties. The experimental design was done with four time variables (25–40min), Arsenic concentration (0.5–2 ppm), adsorbent dose (0.05-2gr) and pH (4–8). The interaction and combined effects of the variables were evaluated by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) table. A quadratic polynomial regression equation was developed to predict the response under optimal conditions. The results of kinetic studies and adsorption isotherms present that the kinetics of Arsenic ion adsorption by CMS/MMT adsorbent follows the quadratic equation and the Langmuir isotherm with a better correlation coefficient than the Freundlich equation. Furthermore, under optimal conditions (pH = 5.6, t = 34 min), 1.9 ppm Arsenic is adsorbed per 0.09 g of the adsorbent with 85% efficiency which indicates that the carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel modified with Montmorillonite is a suitable adsorbent to remove Arsenic ions from aqueous solution.

Encapsulation of Tocotrienol-Enriched Flaxseed Oil in Calcium Alginate–Carboxymethyl Cellulose Hydrogel Beads for Improved Oxidative Stability and Release Profile

The objective of this study was to encapsulate tocotrienol-enriched flaxseed oil in calcium alginate–carboxymethyl cellulose (CA-CMC) hydrogel beads by an extrusion-dripping technique. Two polymeric blends of sodium alginate and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose were selected to emulsify with flaxseed oil (10–50% v/v) depending on the sphericity and swelling behavior of the unloaded beads. One selected emulsion with a high stability, narrow particle size distribution, and small droplet mean diameter was used to prepare tocotrienol-enriched flaxseed oil beads. The beads were approximately 1.7 mm in diameter with a high encapsulation efficiency of approximately 87%. The beads swelled more in the intestinal fluid than the gastric fluid, allowing sustained and higher oil release in the intestinal fluid. CA-CMC beads protected the oxidation of tocotrienol-enriched flaxseed oil during storage at 4 and 65 °C, improving the oxidative stability of the enriched oil. CA-CMC beads have a good potential to preserve and deliver tocotrienol-enriched flaxseed oil.

Effectiveness of Epidermal Growth Factor Loaded Carboxymethylcellulose (EGF-CMC) Hydrogel in Biofilm Formation in Wounds of Diabetic Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Diabetic patients frequently develop wounds, which can be colonized by bacteria, mainly Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with the ability to form biofilms. This study aimed to evaluate the colonization and biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in chronic wounds of diabetic patients treated with a bioactive dressing (EGF-CMC), which consisted of a 2% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) hydrogel loaded with epidermal growth factor (EGF). This randomized clinical trial was conducted with 25 participants: 14 treated with EGF-CMC hydrogel and 11 treated with CMC hydrogel for 12 weeks. Participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus were selected. All had diabetic foot ulcers or chronic venous ulcers. Swab collections were performed on weeks 1, 6, and 12. The laboratory analyses included the identification of strains, microbial quantification, virulence gene investigation, and the evaluation of biofilm formation. In total, 13 S. aureus strains and 15 P. aeruginosa strains were isolated. There were no statistically significant differences regarding bacterial loads and virulence genes. However, EGF-CMC-hydrogel-treated wounds were colonized by strains with lower biofilm formation abilities. The probability of isolating biofilm-producing strains from CMC-hydrogel-treated wounds was 83% greater than the probability of isolating biofilm-producing strains from EGF-CMC-treated wounds.

Injectable Polysaccharide Hydrogels as Localized Nitric Oxide Delivery Formulations

AbstractA series of injectable polysaccharide hydrogels are prepared with oxidized dextran and diethylenetriamine‐modified carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) or hyaluronic acid (HA). Rheological evaluation reveals that CMC‐based hydrogels achieve storage moduli >1 kPa when prepared from 5 wt% solutions, while storage moduli >100 Pa are achievable from solutions with concentrations as low as 2 wt%. HA‐based hydrogels demonstrate smaller storage moduli but have swelling ratios more than four‐fold that of CMC systems at equal concentrations. The incorporation of N‐diazeniumdiolate nitric oxide (NO) donors into the hydrogels results in reduced hydrogel storage moduli as a function of NO donor concentration. The impact of the hydrogel architecture on NO‐release kinetics proves dependent on the identity of the NO donor. Hydrogel degradation over 14 d indicates that HA‐based hydrogels degrade more rapidly than CMC hydrogels and that the addition of NO to the hydrogels increases the rate at which they degrade. In vitro cytotoxicity of hydrogel extracts is minimal, with toxicity observed only at high NO‐donor concentrations for select cell lines. The diverse properties, versatility, and nontoxic characteristics of these injectable hydrogels should facilitate local delivery of nitric oxide for a range of biomedical applications.

Carboxymethylcellulose-Based Hydrogel Obtained from Bacterial Cellulose.

In the present study, we have produced a sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) hydrogel from a bacterial cellulose etherification reaction with chloroacetic acid in an alkaline medium. Bacterial cellulose (BC) was synthesized via economical and environmentally friendly methods using the Gluconacetobacter xylinus bacterium. After purification, freeze-drying, and milling, BC microparticles were dispersed in NaOH solution for different time periods before the etherification reaction. This has allowed the understanding of the alkalinization effect on BC modification. All synthesized CMC were soluble in water, and FTIR and XRD analyses confirmed the etherification reaction. The bath of BC in NaOH solution affects both molecular weight and degree of substitution. SEM analysis revealed the change of BC microstructure from fibrous-like to a smooth, uniform structure. The CMC-0 h allowed the production of crosslinked hydrogel after dehydrothermal treatment. Such hydrogel has been characterized rheologically and has shown a water absorption of 35 times its original weight. The optimization of the CMC produced from BC could pave the way for the production of ultrapure hydrogel to be applied in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry.

Decoration of graphene oxide nanosheets with carboxymethylcellulose hydrogel, silk fibroin and magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical and hyperthermia applications.

In this study, an efficient nanobiocomposite based on graphene oxide (GO), carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) hydrogel, silk fibroin (SF), and Fe3O4 nanoparticles was synthesized. For this purpose and in order to provide a suitable scaffold for the nanobiocomposite, GO was functionalized with a CMC hydrogel via covalent bonding. In the next step, SF was added to the synthesized structure to increase biocompatibility and biodegradability. Fe3O4 was added into the structure by an in situ process and the GO-CMC hydrogel/SF/Fe3O4 nanobiocomposite was synthesized. The synthesized structure was evaluated in terms of toxicity and hemocompatibility and finally, it was used in the hyperthermia technique. This nanocomposite did not destroy healthy HEK293T cells after 48 h and 72 h, while it did annihilate BT549 cancer cells. The GO-CMC hydrogel/SF/Fe3O4 nanobiocomposite has EC50 values of 0.01466 and 0.1415 against HEK293T normal cells and BT549 cancer cells, respectively (after 72 h). The nanocomposite has good potential in hyperthermia applications and at a concentration and a frequency of 1 mg mL-1 and 400 kHz it has a SAR of 67.7 W g-1.

S-Cu-FC/CuS modified GO carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel for enhanced photocatalytic sterilization through homo-heterojunction interface accelerated charge transfer.

Charge transfer and separation play a critical role in the photocatalytic efficiency of photoresponsive materials and their subsequent applications. Herein, for the first time, we constructed a homo-heterostructured S-Cu-FC/CuS modified carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel doped with graphene oxide (GO) (S-Cu-FC/CuS/GO@CMC) through an in situ ionic complexation reaction, which exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. On the one hand, photo-excited charges can rapidly transfer across the homo-heterojunction interface with copper atoms in S-Cu-FC/CuS as both donors and acceptors. On the other hand, the interface between GO and S-Cu-FC/CuS also favors the fast transfer of photogenerated charges. Hence, with the assistance of a photothermal effect, the enhanced photocatalytic performance of S-Cu-FC/CuS/GO endowed the hydrogel with robust sterilization ability for killing 99.5% S. aureus and 100.0% E. coli under 10 min NIR light irradiation. An in vivo test disclosed that this hydrogel could also accelerate the healing of bacteria-infected wounds.

A novel nanocomposite containing zinc ferrite nanoparticles embedded in carboxymethylcellulose hydrogel plus carbon nitride nanosheets with multifunctional bioactivity.

A novel and biologically active nanobiocomposite is synthesized based on carbon nitride nanosheet (g-C3N4) based carboxymethylcellulose hydrogels with embedded zinc ferrite nanoparticles. Physical-chemical aspects, morphological properties, and their multifunctional biological properties have been considered in the process of evaluation of the synthesized structure. The hydrogels' compressive strength and compressive modulus are 1.98 ± 0.03 MPa and 3.46 ± 0.05 MPa, respectively. Regarding the biological response, it is shown that the nanobiocomposite is non-toxic and biocompatible, and hemocompatible (with Hu02 cells). In addition, the developed material offers a suitable antibacterial activity for both Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli).

Super-tough and self-healable all-cellulose-based electrolyte for fast degradable quasi-solid-state supercapacitor

Recyclable and degradable supercapacitors have promising applications for a sustainable energy storage industry. Herein, we prepare a dual-physical crosslinking (DP) carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel with high-toughness, healability, and electric conductivity by integrating abundant ions into the matrix. The prepared hydrogel displays a maximum compressive fracture stress of 4.42 MPa, fast healing in five seconds, and full degradation within eight days. Moreover, the fabricated supercapacitor shows high specific capacitance (309 F g−1) and volumetric capacitance (2.60 F cm−3). The supercapacitor achieves a healing efficiency of 93.9 % after five cuttings, and exhibits a cycling stability of 84.6 % capacitance retention after 1000 cycles. These merits ensure that the all-cellulose-based supercapacitor can operate in case of sudden collision and deformation, which contribute to reducing the environmental hazards from supercapacitor's preparation to its abandonment.

Adsorption removal of Brilliant green and Safranin‐O contaminants from water using a hydrogel based on carboxymethyl cellulose and sodium alginate crosslinked by epichlorohydrin

AbstractThe current study investigates the adsorption properties of a chemically crosslinked hydrogel based on sodium alginate (NaALG) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The structural characteristics of the investigated hydrogel are described using information from Fourier Transform–infrared spectra, X‐ray diffraction patterns and field emission scanning electron microscopy pictures. The NaALG/epichlorohydrin (ECH)/CMC hydrogel was synthesised under optimised conditions with respect to the swelling percentage. Various reaction parameters were varied to obtain the maximum swelling percentage. The synthesised hydrogel was taken as an adsorbent in the decolorisation of Brilliant green (BG) and Safranin‐O (SO) dyes from water. According to the kinetic investigations, the decolorisation equilibrium of SO by NaALG/ECH/CMC was discovered in 4 hours (98.98%), while the removal of BG by NaALG/ECH/CMC took 6 hours (97.7%). Chemical processes were used to describe the decolorisation mechanisms, which significantly supported the pseudo‐first‐order model. NaALG/ECH/CMC hydrogel absorption was indicated to take place in monolayer adsorption form (Langmuir isotherm). The highest adsorption capacity for BG was discovered to be 864.8 mg g−1 and for SO it was 193.1 mg g−1, by synthesised hydrogel, where “mg” refers to the commercial colourant and not to the pure dye. Therefore, the synthesised hydrogel can be considered as a smart device for the adsorption of dye in water purification tasks.

Evaluation of Chokeberry/Carboxymethylcellulose Hydrogels with the Addition of Disaccharides: DART-TOF/MS and HPLC-DAD Analysis

With the growing awareness of the importance of a healthy diet, the need for the development of novel formulations is also on the rise. Chokeberry products are popular among consumers since they are a rich source of polyphenols that are responsible for antioxidant activity and other positive effects on human health. However, other natural food ingredients, such as disaccharides, can affect their stability. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of disaccharides addition on the polyphenol composition of chokeberry hydrogels. Hydrogels were prepared from chokeberry juice and 2% of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) with the addition of 30%, 40%, or 50% of disaccharides (sucrose or trehalose). Samples were analyzed using DART-TOF/MS. The method was optimized, and the fingerprints of the mass spectra have been statistically processed using PCA analysis. Prepared samples were evaluated for total polyphenols, monomeric anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity (FRAP, CUPRAC, DPPH, ABTS assays) using spectrophotometric methods. Individual polyphenols were evaluated using HPLC-DAD analysis. Results showed the addition of disaccharides to 2% CMC hydrogels caused a decrease of total polyphenols. These findings confirm proper formulation is important to achieve appropriate retention of polyphenols.

High-performance homogeneous carboxymethylcellulose-stabilized Au@Ag NRs-CMC surface-enhanced Raman scattering chip for thiram detection in fruits

Cellulose material holds considerable promise for effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate construction due to its extensive availability, chemically modifying capacity, ease of manufacture, high flexibility and low optical activity. A large-area, high-sensitivity, stable and uniform Au@Ag nanorods (NRs)-CMC substrate was successfully developed via electrostatic repulsion by using negatively-charged core–shell Au@Ag NRs as SERS active plasmonic nanomaterial, combined with negatively-charged carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) hydrogel for nanoparticles stabilization, homodisperse and protection. The obtained Au@Ag NRs-CMC substrate showed excellent sensitivity for the detection of thiram residues in fruits containing low and abundant pigment interferents, such as apples and blueberries, with detection limits of 58 and 78 ppb, respectively. Additionally, it retained more than 80% SERS performance after storage for 9 months under ambient conditions, demonstrating its great potential in facilitating the commercialization of cellulose-based SERS technology for cost-effective detection of food contaminants with advantages of facile preparation procedure, uniformity, reproducibility and long-term stability.

Ultrasensitive Piezoresistive and Piezocapacitive Cellulose-Based Ionic Hydrogels for Wearable Multifunctional Sensing

Tactile sensors, namely, flexible devices that sense physical stimuli, have received much attention in the last few decades due to their applicability in a wide range of fields like the world of wearables, soft robotics, prosthetics, and e-skin. Nevertheless, achieving a trade-off among stretchability, good sensitivity, easy manufacturability, and multisensing ability is still a challenge. Herein, an extremely flexible strain sensor composed of a cellulose-based hydrogel is presented. A natural biocompatible carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) hydrogel endowed with ionic conductivity by sodium chloride (NaCl) was used as the sensitive part. Both the sensible layer and electrodes were investigated with an innovative approach for wearable sensor applications based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to find the best device configuration. The sensor, exploitable both as a piezoresistor and as a piezocapacitor, presents high sensitivity to external stimuli, together with an extreme stretchability of up to 600%, showing the best strain and temperature sensitivity among the ionic conductive hydrogel-based devices presented in the literature. The very high strain sensitivity enables the hydrogel to be implemented in wearable strain sensors to monitor different human motions and physiological signals, representing a valid solution for the realization of transparent, easily manufacturable, and low-environmental-impact devices.

A low-modulus, adhesive, and highly transparent hydrogel for multi-use flexible wearable sensors

Flexible materials have been widely applied in wearable sensors, but their high modulus and non-adhesion impede their widespread applications. In this work, a polyacrylic acid (PAA)-enhanced carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel (PEC hydrogel) was prepared via a two-step method to be utilized in flexible wearable sensors. The hydrogel presented a transparency of over 90 % (400–800 nm). Because of polymer chain entanglements and non-covalent interactions between PAA and CMC, the tensile properties of the hydrogel were enhanced, affording the PEC hydrogel with high stretchability (492 %) and low tensile strength (< 12.5 kPa). A hydrogel-based resistive strain sensor exhibited a wide sensing range (0–300 %, GF = 3.16), fast response time (125 ms), and excellent durability (over 1500 cycles from 0 % to 100 % strain). Owing to the introduction of polar groups, the hydrogel could be adhered to various substrates, and the peeling strength on pig skin (a replacement for human skin) was 53.97 N/m. Thanks to its low modulus, adhesion, and sensing performance, the hydrogel was assembled into a wearable strain sensor that accurately detected multiple human body movements. The hydrogel was also applied in a capacitive pressure sensor, which possessed a fast response time (100 ms) and high sensitivity. This work provides facile method for fabricating hydrogels used in Multi-use Flexible Wearable Sensors.

Immediately activating hemostatic cellulose sealants for uncontrolled hemorrhage

The control of bleeding is one of the most important processes in surgical treatments and wound healing, and the development of effective hemostatic agents is urgently required. An ideal hemostatic agent should be immediately activated when exposed to bleeding to reduce blood loss as soon as possible and should be user-friendly for urgent situations. To meet these demands, we functionalized carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with two different phenolic moieties, catechol (CA) and pyrogallol (PG), and then formulated each CMC derivative into adhesive hydrogels with high hemostatic ability. These hemostatic platforms exhibited sturdy modulus (CMC-CA: 0.55 ± 0.08 kPa, CMC-PG: 1.37 ± 0.24 kPa), wet-tissue adhesiveness (CMC-CA: 2.19 ± 0.53 kPa, CMC-PG: 3.13 ± 0.25 kPa), and rapid crosslinking within seconds for wound closure. We transformed the CMC hydrogels into a patch design, resulting in 16∼19-fold increase in elastic modulus and 3∼4-fold increase in adhesiveness, which can completely seal the wound for more efficient hemostatic action. The adhesive CMC patches exhibited superior hemostatic capability to fibrin glue as a wound sealant by rapidly stopping bleeding in mouse liver hemorrhage. This study demonstrated that bio-inspired polyphenolic CMC hydrogels produce a highly effective, instantly working hemostatic agent.
