Influence of metal ions on cysteine as a corrosion inhibitor for low carbon steel in sulfuric acid: Polarization, EIS, XPS, and DFT analysis

This study examines the effectiveness of cysteine as an eco-friendly in inhibiting the corrosion of low-carbon steel in a sulfuric acid solution and the impact of adding various metal ions (Cu2+, Ni2+, and Co2+) to the media. All solutions were prepared using distilled water. The results show that 5 mM cysteine inhibits corrosion (IE = 65%), increasing to 93.5% in the presence of 4×10-5 M Cu2+ ions, but decreasing with the addition of Co2+ or Ni2+ ions. The inhibitive action of cysteine-Cu is the best one and that may be attributed to the formation of a protective coating on the metal surface, which prevents chemical reactions in an aggressive environment. Moreover, the DFT calculation found that the adsorption energy increased from −17.2 to −97.7 and −104.6 kcal/mol in the case of cysteine, Cysteine-Cu SAM, and Cysteine-Cu(II) Salt and the closest atom to the surface reduced from 2.576 to 2.128 and 2.146 Å which indicates Cysteine-Cu better adhere to the surface. SEM, XRD, and XPS were used to analyze the formation of the protective layer. This has the potential to develop new and more effective corrosion inhibitors for industrial applications.

Exploring cinnamon extract’s potential as a green corrosion inhibitor for X65 carbon steel in sulfuric acid: a comprehensive investigation

The effectiveness of cinnamon extract as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor for X65 carbon steel (X65CSt) in a 1 mol/L H2SO4 solution was examined using electrochemical, chemical, and computational techniques. This inhibitor has many advantages, it is safe, environmentally friendly, harmless to human health, and economically feasible. The anticorrosion efficacy rises with rising the concentration of the cinnamon extract and reducing temperature and reaches 95.83% at 450 mg l−1 of cinnamon extract using potentiodynamic polarization. All the investigated methods confirm the anticorrosion ability of cinnamon extract as indicated by the reduced the corrosion current density values and mass loss as well as the greater charge transfer resistance. In addition, the values of the pitting potentials were also transformed in a more noble direction implying the resistance of pitting attack. The polarization technique categorized the cinnamon extract as a mixed inhibitor. The mechanism of inhibition was demonstrated in terms of adsorption of the main components of cinnamon extract onto the surface of X65CSt. of the adsorption of the main components of the cinnamon extract on the surface of the X65CSt and this adsorption is of combined type between both physical and chemical modes, as determined by the computed values of free energy of adsorption, which range between −46.96 and −37.42 kJ. mol−1. The adsorption is exposed to Langmuir isotherm. The four components of cinnamon extract were investigated through density functional theory, Monte Carlo, and Molecular dynamic simulation. The quantum parameters and the adsorption of these components on the Fe(110) reveals that cinnamaldehyde and cinnamic acid inhibitors are more effective as corrosion inhibitors.

Justicia brandegeeana as a green corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in sulfuric acid

ABSTRACT The anti-corrosive effect of the extract in ethanol of Justicia brandegeeana (Acanthaceae) against carbon steel AISI 1020 in sulfuric acid medium 1 mol L−1 was investigated. In addition to the effect of seasonality, several techniques were used to investigate the anti-corrosive activity, such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PP), linear polarization resistance (LPR), and weight loss. The chelating effect was analyzed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and the surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the inhibition efficiency is dependent on the concentration of the extract, reaching its maximum at 1500 ppm and despite having good thermal stability (82.41% inhibition at 70°C), it decreases with increasing temperature, indicating a physisorption behavior. The extract obeyed the Langmuir isotherm and the Tafel curves characterized it as a mixed inhibitor, with a tendency to cathodic region. It also presented a 52% chelating effect against Fe+2 ions, and the SEM analysis indicated a protection with the presence of plant extract, thus minimizing surface roughness. These results indicated the J. brangeeana ethanol extract as a green anti-corrosive agent.

Green corrosion and DFT studies of Ustilago maydis extract for carbon steel in sulfuric acid

A study on the use of Ustilago maydis extract as a green corrosion inhibitor for 1018 carbon steel in 0.5 m H2SO4 by using gravimetric, potentiodynamic polarization curves, linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy electrochemical techniques at 25, 40 and 60 °C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to know the relationship between inhibitor electronic properties and inhibition efficiency. Weight loss results indicated that Ustilago maydis was a good corrosion inhibitor with an efficiency that increased with its concentration but decreased with the temperature. However, the efficiency was around 60% because it was physically adsorbed on to the steel surface according to a Langmuir type of adsorption isotherm obtaining relatively low free energy values, which lied between −14.8 and −27 kJ/mol at 25 and 60 °C respectively. Activation energy decreased in presence of Ustilago maydis making corrosion process more difficult to occur. Potentiodynamic polarization curves showed a decrease in the corrosion current density in one order of magnitude and determined this extract as a cathodic type of corrosion inhibitor affecting. There was no evidence of a passive film, whereas the corrosion mechanism was controlled by the adsorption/desorption of some intermediate species and the double electrochemical layer resistance increased with the addition of the inhibitor. Gas chromatography showed that the main compounds found in this extract included D-Mannose, β-D-Glucopyranose,4-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl, Melibiose and Arabinose, whereas quantum chemical calculations by density functional theory analysis showed that Melibiose had the highest inhibition efficiency because it had the highest EHOMO value and lowest gap energy value, ∆E.

Heteroatomic organic compound as a novel corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in sulfuric acid: Detail experimental, surface, molecular docking and computational studies

The prime objective of the present research is to explore the green synthesis of nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur-containing heteroatomic organic compound (TMP) using the ultrasound method and its application as a novel corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 1 M H2SO4 under hydrodynamic conditions at 1500 rpm. The performance ability of TMP rises from 42.80 % (without TMP) to 92.80 % (with TMP)/96.67 % (with TMP+KI). The TMP depicted the cathodic inhibitive nature. The charge transfer resistance (Rct) changes from 28.7 Ω cm−1 to 190.4 Ω cm−1 with the falling of double layer capacitance (Cdl) from 46 μF cm−2 to 28 μF cm−2 on the introduction of TMP supports the adsorption of TMP molecules at the active sites of the carbon steel surface. The molecular adsorption of TMP is governed by El-Awady isotherm. The results of the surface analysis support the creation of an inhibitive layer of TMP over the carbon steel surface. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo simulations (MCS) calculations were further performed to justify the experimental results. Molecular docking was used to analyze the TMP and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) protein interaction.

Surface interaction and corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in sulfuric acid using Petroselinum crispum extract

With the aid of the mass loss (ML) method, and a few electrochemical techniques [potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)], the inhibitory impact of Petroselinum crispum (PC) extract on C-steel corrosion in solutions of 1 M sulfuric acid was assessed. By employing Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, the C-steel surface morphology was investigated. The data showed that the solution of plant extract can be effectively utilized to inhibit C-steel corrosion in solutions of 1 M sulfuric acid. The effectiveness of the extract was enhanced by the higher extract dose and rising temperature. The apparent activation energy and the enthalpy of the dissolution process were determined and discussed. The presence of PC decreases the double-layer capacity from 493.1 to 107.3 μF cm−2 and raises the charge transfer resistance in a solution of 1 M sulfuric acid from 43.39 to 287.7 Ω cm2. PC is a mixed-type inhibitor, as demonstrated by PDP tests. The PC extract demonstrated the highest productivity for the C-steel protection up to 90.2% at 300 ppm from the extract, according with the PDP technique. The attained data indicated that PC extract was adsorbed chemically (ΔGoads > 40 kJ mol−1) onto the surface of the C-steel following the Temkin isotherm. Enhancing Corrosion Resistance of Carbon Steel in Sulfuric Acid Using β-cyclodextrin as an Inhibitor

The corrosion process leads to substantial economic losses, particularly in the industrial sector, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures. This study aimed to investigate the impact of inhibitor concentration, immersion duration, and temperature on the corrosion of carbon steel in a sulfuric acid environment, assessed through mass loss measurements. Inhibition efficiency displayed a positive correlation with increasing inhibitor concentration, while it declined as temperatures rose. In a 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) exhibited an inhibition efficiency of 62.26% at a concentration of 1 mM. The addition of potassium iodide (KI) significantly enhanced the inhibition efficiency to 97.98%, indicating a synergistic effect. The study encompassed various calculations, including the determination of activation energy (Ea), activation enthalpy (ΔHa), activation entropy (ΔSa), adsorption-free energy (ΔGads), adsorption enthalpy (ΔHads), and adsorption entropy (ΔSads). The adsorption of the inhibitor onto the carbon steel surface conformed to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Additionally, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) investigations provided further verification of β-cyclodextrin's adsorption on the carbon steel surface.

Chemical and Electrochemical Studies on Expired Lioresal Drugs as Corrosion Inhibitors for Carbon Steel in Sulfuric Acid

Lioresal is a muscle relaxer and an antispasmodic agent, known as Lioresal. The active ingredient is β-(Aminomethyl)-p-chlorohydrocinnamic acid, a racemic mixture of the R,(-) and S, (+) isomers. It affects directly the spinal cord with adverse effects including drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, headache, trouble sleeping, nausea and vomiting, urinary retention, or constipation. Therefore, the accumulation of expired or unused Lioresal in our home is so dangerous and harmful for our children. The present work introduces an idea for using expired Lioresal as a corrosion inhibitor for steel in 1.0 M H2SO4. The effect of both concentration and temperature were studied. The inhibition efficiency was found to increase with concentration and decreased with rising temperature. Chemical, electrochemical, and analytical techniques, namely, gravimetric, thermometric, gasometric, acidimetric, AAS, and potentiodynamic polarization were used to evaluate the inhibition action of the expired Lioresal drugs. The inhibition performance is due to the adsorption and adhesion of drugs constituent molecules on the steel surface. The adsorption was found to obey Langmuir isotherm. The surface area available for the anodic dissolution of iron and cathodic hydrogen evolution process diminishes without changing the reaction mechanism. The values of Ecorr. readings slowly decrease to negative values, showing that these inhibitors are mixed-type inhibitors mainly cathodic inhibitors. The data obtained from different techniques are in good agreement with each other. Electrochemical and analytical Techniques are efficient and accurate in the determination of the corrosion rate and inhibition performance of expired drugs in an aqueous medium.

Use of a Metallic Complex Derived from Curcuma Longa as Green Corrosion Inhibitor for Carbon Steel in Sulfuric Acid

A tin-containing metallic complex derived from Curcuma longa, bis[1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dionato-κO,κO′]bis(butyl), has been obtained and used as a green corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 0.5 M sulfuric acid by using weight loss, electrochemical techniques, and the Density Functional Theory. It was found that the obtained metallic complex greatly decreases the steel corrosion rate by adsorption according to a Frumkin model in a weak, physical type of adsorption. Inhibitor efficiency increased with its concentration, and it acted as a mixed type of inhibitor. Results were supported by quantum-chemical research in order to examine the relationship between structural and electronic properties and the inhibitor efficiency.

ANALYSIS OF CORROSION RATE OF ASTM A 387 GRADE 12 AND A 283 GRADE FOR SULFURIC ACID TANK MATERIAL

Corrosion is a process of degradation metal quality which is very detrimental in the industry. Especially in an industries related to utilization of acidic liquids such assulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc. If corrosion rate of carbon steel can be estimated, the prediction of remaining life of carbon steel, and the preventive methods of corrosionwould be more appropriate. This will reduce technical, economic and aesthetic losses. The aims of this study was to determine corrosion rate of carbon steel in sulfuric acid. This study used ASTM A 387 Grade 12 and ASTM A 283 Grade A carbon steel type fortank material, where one material is represented by 5 specimen. The corrosion rate of Specimens were measured by the weight loss method for 31 days. The 5 specimens were divided into 3 regions where specimens no.1 and 2 were immersed in sulfuric acid , specimens no.3 were in the middle area or zone level (partially immersed), and specimens no.4 and 5 were not immersed in sulfuric acid. The highst corrosion rate occured on specimen No.3 with maximum corrosion rate was 0,097 mm/y for ASTM A 387 Gr 12 and 0,096 mm/y untuk material ASTM A 283 Gr A. The results of corrosion rate on ASTM A 387 Grade 12 material are lower than corrosion rate of ASTM A 283 Grade A material. This is caused by presence of Mo and Cr alloy elements in ASTM A 387 Grade 12.

Thermodynamic parameters were computed and discussed, Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to study the surface morphology of steel in absence and presence of the used inhibitor, hydrogen evolution techniques was used to evaluate the inhibition efficiency of the BHPT inhibitor compound. the data obtained from different techniques are in good agreement to each other and show the BHPT, surfactant derived from PET, waste considered as good corrosion inhibitor for steel in sulfuric acid.

Corrosion Inhibition of Carbon Steel in Sulfuric Acid by [BMIm] [Lys] Amino Acid Ionic Liquids

The corrosion inhibition effect and mechanism of the amino acid ionic liquids—1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium Lysine ([BMIm][Lys]) for carbon steel in 5% H2SO4solution are investigated by electrochemical tests. The results indicate that the [BMIm][Lys] has a good inhibition performance for the carbon steel in 5% H2SO4solution. The corrosion inhibition efficiency improves with the increase of the concentration, which arrives at 95% ultimately. The study also shows that the inhibitors are mixed-type ones. The adsorption of the inhibitor molecules on the carbon steel surface obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

Studies on preparing and corrosion inhibition behaviour of quaternized polyethyleneimine for low carbon steel in sulfuric acid

Quaternized polyethyleneimine (QPEI) was prepared via two procedures of macromolecular reactions, tertiary amination reaction and quaterisation, and its chemical structure was characterized with infrared and UV spectra. In this paper, the corrosion inhibition property of QPEI for low carbon steel (A 3 steel) in H 2SO 4 solution was mainly investigated by using weight loss method, electrochemical technique (potentiodynamic polarization curves) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation. Meanwhile, the corrosion inhibition mechanism of QPEI was also fully explored. The experiment results show that as a polymeric quaternary ammonium salt, QPEI is quite an excellent corrosive inhibitor, it possesses outstanding inhibition action for low carbon steel, and only with 5 mg L −1 of QPEI concentration, the inhibition efficiency of A 3 steel can reach to 92% in 0.5 M H 2SO 4 solution for 72 h of immersing time. The inhibition efficiency increases with the increase of QPEI concentration, and the inhibition efficiency also increases with the enhancement of the cationic degree (quaternized agree) of QPEI. QPEI acted as a mixed type inhibitor with anodic predominance. QPEI possesses functions of double filming, adsorption filming and polymer filming, so with the cooperation of the two filming effects, QPEI can form a compact barrier film on A 3 steel surface, and prevent metal dissolution and retard H + discharging. The adsorption of QPEI on A 3 steel surface was found to follow the Langmuir isotherm equation.
