The inhibitory efficacy of 2-(Benzoxazol-2-ylthio)-N-(4-phenyl-5-phenylazo-thiazol-2-yl)-acetamide (BNP) was systematically explored through weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarization (PP), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), in relation to the corrosion mitigation of J55 carbon steel (J55CS) within hydrochloric acid (HCl) environments. This research employs a combination of experimental techniques, including gravimetric analysis, electrochemical tests, and theoretical considerations. It has been determined that BNP has an inhibitory effect on the corrosion of J55CS in strong HCl, reaching 91.8% at 18 × 10−6 M at 298 K. The inhibitory efficiency displays a notable enhancement as the concentration of the BNP is elevated within the range of 3–18 × 10−6 M. Conversely, the IE% experiences a raised when the temperature is raised. This augmentation can be attributed to the inherent ability of BNP to facilitate the formation of inhibitory films on the surface of J55CS. An analysis of Tafel plots reveals that the BNP adheres to a mixed-type inhibitor. The adsorption of BNP obeyed the Temkin adsorption isotherm. The investigated isotherm plots revealed that the adsorption process for BNP on the metal surface was endothermic, spontaneous, and chemical adsorption. Theoretical modeling [density functional theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo (MC)] revealed the correlation between the BNP molecular chemical structure and its anticorrosive property.

Corrosion inhibition of extracts from the expired traditional Chinese patent medicines for Q235 carbon steel in hydrochloric acid

During the COVID-19 epidemic, traditional Chinese patent medicine played a significant role in treatment and prevention. However, excessive production of medicines will face serious disposal problems once they are expired, and how to achieve safe and efficient utilization of resources becomes another challenge. In this study, the diverse organic components of traditional Chinese patent medicine-YanReQing Granules (YGE) have been extracted and enriched using a low-temperature extraction method, and the main compositions have been analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The inhibition performance of YGE for Q235 steel in 0.1 mol L−1 HCl solution was evaluated by various methods. The results indicated that the corrosion rate of metal decreased significantly with the addition of YGE, and the corrosion potential shifted positively as the increase of cathodic and anodic Tafel slopes, indicating that the YGE belongs to a mixed type of corrosion inhibitor with the simultaneously inhibition on cathode and anode. The inhibition efficiency of YGE increased gradually with the more additive amounts, and exceeded 99% calculated by the fitting current density in polarization curves. The active ingredients in YGE are mainly composed of hydroxyl and carbon-based aromatic hydrocarbons, which are easily protonated in hydrochloric acid solution and carry a positive charge, and then adsorb at the metal interface electrostatically to form a shielding layer. Moreover, the theoretical calculations have confirmed that the chemical adsorption can be achieved between the polar atoms and metal to enhance the protective layer ultimately.

Fish processing discards extract as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid

The objective of this study is to extract amino acids from fish processing discards for the preparation of highly effective and degradable corrosion inhibitors. The composition of fish processing discards extract (FPDE) was characterized by HPLC and FTIR. The results showed that the main components of FPDE are amino acids and contain a large number of unsaturated functional groups. Electrochemical techniques (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Tafel), surface analysis (XPS and AFM), and molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) were conducted to investigate the corrosion inhibition mechanism of FPDE for carbon steel in 1 mol/L HCl. As shown by electrochemical tests, FPDE exhibits mixed-type corrosion inhibition with a maximum inhibition efficiency of 93.3%. FPDE exhibits excellent corrosion inhibition properties on carbon steel surfaces by forming a high coverage film through chemisorption and physisorption. Indeed, the advantages of remarkable inhibition efficiency and facile extraction methods allow FPDE to become a promising corrosion inhibitor for practical applications.

Investigations of non-ionic surfactants derived from triazoles and pyrroles as potent corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid

The effectiveness of two synthetic non-ionic surfactants (NIS), including triazole and pyrrole derivatives, to inhibit corrosion of C-steel in 1.0 M HCl solution was tested. Their chemical compositions were verified using some of the analytical data. All of the synthesized compounds displayed good surface activity when different surface coefficients were tested. The corrosion parameters were determined employing chemical and electrochemical methods. The surface features of these compounds were identified. The anticorrosion efficacy (AE%) rises with rising the concentration of NIS compounds and with reducing temperature, surface and interfacial tension, and critical micelle concentration. The EIS diagram showed that as the concentration of NIS compounds increased, charge transfer resistance raised and double-layer capacitance reduced due to its adsorption of on the C-Steel surface. The values of AEPDP %. reached 89.98% and 91.45% at 500 ppm of compounds A and B, respectively by applying the polarization method. The anti-corrosion process was explained by the formation of adsorbed film that separated the C-steel surface from the corrosive HCl solution. The adsorption is subjected to Freundlich isotherm. The two NIS compounds functioned as mixed-type inhibitors, as revealed by potentiodynamic polarization. In vitro and in silico antibacterial and anti-corrosive properties of Persea americana leaves extract as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in a hydrochloric acid medium

The inhibitory performance of an efficient and biodegradable Persea americana leaves extract (PALE) was inspected using electrochemical methods and surface analysis techniques in 1 M HCl. Then, antibacterial activity was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus NCTC 12493, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115 using a well diffusion assay. Moreover, the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentrations were determined. Additionally, the antibacterial activity was performed in silico. The experimental results showed that PALE has a more excellent inhibition standard for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid. Polarization investigations reported that as the concentration of PALE leaves extracts, the inhibitory power grew and reached a high value of 92%. PALE did act as a mixed-type inhibitor and preceded a Langmuir adsorption isotherm correctly. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) outcomes demonstrated that the PALE adsorption on the metallic surface significantly decreased its dissolution rate, resulting in a clean and seamless surface. Additionally, PALE was effective against bacterial strains, and molecular docking analysis revealed that apigenin and quercetin-3-glucoside might be the main compounds that inhibit bacterial proliferation.

Polarographic Studies for the Corrosion of Carbon Steel in Hydrochloric Acid Solutions

The present work deals with the quantitative corrosion determination of carbon steel in hydrochloric acid by the use of polarographic and weight loss technique.
 The polarographic peak obtained at (-0.27 v) in 0.1 M hydrochloric acid was used for the determination of iron and a calibration was ranged (10-5–10-3) M.
 To confirm the obtained results a weight loss measurement were carried out, its results are in good agreement with that of the polarographic measurements. The research included in addition to that a kinetic study of corrosion reactions of iron in hydrochloric acid. Reaction rates were calculated at different temperature, and apparent energies of activation have been calculated from corrosion rates and Arrhenius plots.

Sunflower-head extract as a sustainable and eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid solutions

The inhibition effect of sunflower head-extract (SFHE) for carbon steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) and 0.5 M sulfuric acid (H2SO4) solution was studied by weight loss measurement, electrochemical measurements, and ultra-depth three-dimensional microscope. The adsorption/desorption of SFHE from carbon steel surface was studied by the differential polarization curves. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were also calculated and discussed. The results show that SFHE is an excellent inhibitor in 1 M HCl and 0.5 M H2SO4, the SFHE exhibits the highest inhibition efficiency of 96.4% and 91.9% at 3 g/L at 298 K in 1 M HCl and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. In addition, the inhibition efficiency follows the order: HCl ˃ H2SO4. The adsorption of SFHE on the carbon steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. All the results reveal that SFHE can be used as a sustainable and environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in acid solution in the future.

Synthesis and assessment of Gemini cationic surfactants as inhibitors for corrosion of carbon steel in hydrochloric acid

ABSTRACT Novel mono, di and tetra cationic surfactant (CS) molecules were synthesized by quaternization reaction of diamide with cetyl-2-chloroacetate with different ratio 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4. The chemical structures of the synthetic compounds were proven by FTIR and 1HNMR. The synthetic cationic surfactants were examined as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel (CSt) in 1.0 M HCl solutions using chemical and electrochemical measurements. Some surface-active properties were determined and linked to the inhibition process. The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing concentration of CS molecules and decreasing temperature. Potentiodynamic polarization technique showed that the three CS molecules are classified as mixed inhibitors. The inhibition process was explained by its spontaneous adsorption on the surface of CSt, according to Langmuir isotherm. The results confirmed that the cationic surfactants successfully inhibited the corrosion of CSt in the investigated corrosion medium and the inhibition efficiency reached 96.08%.

Corrosion protection of carbon steel in acidic media by expired bupropion drug; experimental and theoretical study

The effects of expired bupropion on the corrosion protection of carbon steel in hydrochloric acid (1.0 M) and sulfuric acid (0.5 M) solutions were examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Bupropion concentrations in both acid solutions were raised, which improved corrosion prevention. Bupropion was a mixed inhibitor because it retarded the anodic and cathodic processes, as indicated by polarization data. The inhibition efficiency decreased with the increasing temperature from 25 to 55 °C. In the presence of bupropion, the activation energies of corrosion in both acid solutions increased. The thermodynamic quantities were deduced from the influence of temperature on the corrosion process of carbon steel in both acid media. Bupropion adsorption on carbon steel followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The polarization data yielded outcomes consistent with the results arising from impedance measurements. FTIR spectroscopy showed the active sites of bupropion molecule during adsorption on the alloy surface. The theoretical study and molecular dynamics simulation of bupropion was done by a density functional theory (DFT) approach to realize the effects of molecular structure on the inhibitive action of bupropion.

Didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride as a highly efficient corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid solution

PurposeThis paper aims to discover a highly efficient corrosion inhibitor for 45# steel in hydrochloric acid solution and reveal the mechanism of inhibitors.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, electrochemical measurements, weight loss measurements, surface characterization and theoretical calculation are used to evaluate the inhibition performance and reveal the mechanism of inhibitors.FindingsResults show that didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC), especially in combination with dodecane phenol plyoxyethylene, could provide a good protection performance for the carbon steel in hydrochloric acid. The N atoms and long alkyl chains in DDAC molecular structure play the vital role.Originality/valueUsually, DDAC is used as the compound chemical disinfectant in oilfield sterilization, medicine and health. However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study has shown that it can mitigate the corrosion of carbon steels in HCl solution.

Experimental, theoretical explorations and MD simulation of the inhibition efficiency of tyrosine on carbon steel in hydrochloric acid

One of the encourager amino acid compounds "Tyrosine" can be used as a safe corrosion inhibitor. The inhibition effect of tyrosine on carbon steel in 1 M HCl was investigated using electrochemical measurements: (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) technique). The effectiveness of the inhibitor was studied as a function of temperature using chemical technique. The results showed that tyrosine could work as effective corrosion inhibitor and the inhibition efficiency was increased with increasing the tyrosine concentration. The inhibition efficiency of carbon steel was decreased with an increase in temperature. Computational chemistry using DFT/B3LYP/6–31+G (d, p) was used to investigate the relative corrosion inhibition performance of tyrosine. The molecular dynamic simulation (MD) has emerged as a modern tool to investigate the adsorption mechanism of tyrosine on carbon steel, Fe (1 1 0) surface. The calculated quantum chemical descriptors gave a good explanation for the experimental results.

Mechanism of degradation of propargyl alcohol by acid-catalysed hydrolysis and corrosion inhibition efficiency of propargyl alcohol intermediates for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid

Acetylenic alcohols are one of the most important groups of film-forming corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid (HCl). The inhibition mechanism of acetylenic alcohols has been widely discussed for more than 50 years, however, it is not well-understood, particularly with regard to the chemical degradation reactions of acetylenic alcohols in HCl solution. In the present paper, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques were used to investigate the mechanism and the rate of degradation of propargyl alcohol in 3.6–10.8 M HCl at 20–95 °C. Several water-soluble products, such as 1-hydroxypropan-2-one, 2-chloroprop-2-en-1-ol, 2,2-dichloropropan-1-ol and 2-chloropropane-1,2-diol were formed via the electrophilic acid-catalysed addition of HCl and water to the alkyne. Some intermediates further polymerize to form water-insoluble polymers, such as poly (propargyl alcohol), poly (allyl alcohol) and poly (acrolein). The hydrolysis half-life constants of propargyl alcohol decreased with increasing HCl concentration and temperature. The inhibition efficiency (η) of propargyl alcohol and its precursors for carbon steel in 3.6 M and 7.83 M HCl was studied. The critical role of acrolein intermediates on the corrosion performance of propargyl alcohol in hydrochloric acid was identified. Products of propargyl alcohol hydrolysis, 1-hydroxypropan-2-one and 2-chloroprop-2-en-1-ol are poor corrosion inhibitors. However, acrolein and its reactive intermediates are good corrosion inhibitors with inhibitor efficiency, η in the range from 97.69 ± 0.4 % for fresh acrolein to η = 97.94 ± 0.8 % for aged acrolein.

Effective Corrosion Inhibition of Carbon Steel in Hydrochloric Acid by Dopamine-Produced Carbon Dots.

In present study, novel nitrogen doped carbon dots (NCDs) are synthesized using a green material—dopamine—as a precursor and studied as corrosion inhibitors for Q235 carbon steel in 1 M HCl solution. According to the electrochemical results, it is found that NCDs acting as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor can effectively retard the acid corrosion of carbon steel, and their inhibition efficiency increases with the concentration increasing from 50 to 400 ppm. The highest inhibition efficiency is 96.1% in the presence of 400 ppm NCDs at room temperature. Additionally, the adsorption of NCDs obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. In addition, weight loss results show that the inhibition efficiency in the presence of 400 ppm NCDs increases with prolonged exposure time and rising temperature (298–328 K), owing to the strong adsorption of NCDs on the steel surface, and the η value is 92.2% at 60 h of immersion and 86.2%, 89.1%, 90.6% and 92.9% at 298, 308, 318 and 328 K, respectively. Surface analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM), laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further proves the formation of a protective NCD film on the steel surface.

This study describes the adsorption behavior of three arylthiophene derivatives namely: 2-(4-amidino-3-fluorophenyl)-5-[4-methoxy phenyl] thiophene dihydrochloride salt (MA-1217), 2-(4-amidinophenyl)-5-[4-chlorophenyl] thiophene dihydrochloride salt (MA-1316) and 2-(4-amidino-3-fluorophenyl)-5-[4-chlorophenyl]thiophene dihydrochloride salt (MA-1312) at C-steel in 1.0 mol·L−1 HCl interface using experimental and theoretical studies. Electrochemical and mass loss measurements showed that the inhibition efficiency (IE) of the arylthiophene derivatives increases with increasing concentrations and exhibited maximum efficiency 89% at 21 × 10−6 mol·L−1 (MA-1217) by mass loss method. The investigated arylthiophene derivatives obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. From polarization studies the arylthiophene derivatives act as mixed-type inhibitors. Surface analysis were carried out and discussed. The mode of orientation and adsorption of inhibitor molecules on C-steel surface was studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Quantum chemical parameters as well as the radial distribution function indices and binding energies confirm the experimental results.

Enhancement of adsorption and anticorrosion performance of two polymeric compounds for the corrosion of SABIC carbon steel in hydrochloric acid

The anti-corrosion efficacies of two polymeric molecules, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and alginic acid (AA), on the corrosion of SABIC type-X60 carbon steel (CSX60) in 1.0 M HCl solutions were investigated. Chemical and electrochemical techniques, such as weight loss analysis, galvanostatic polarization, potentiodynamic anodic polarization (PDAP), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were employed. The results of these experiments revealed that the anti-corrosion activities increased with decreasing temperatures and increasing concentrations of PVA and AA. The surface morphologies of the investigated steel surfaces were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy. The anti-corrosive strengths of the polymeric molecules with respect to the general and pitting corrosion behavior were demonstrated via the formation of adsorbent films that isolated the CSX60 surface from the aggressive acidic solutions. The inhibitor adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm model. A few thermodynamic activation parameters were also calculated and discussed. PVA and AA were found to retard the pitting corrosion of CSX60 based on the shift of pitting potential to a nobler direction in the PDAP profiles.

Corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in hydrochloric acid: Elucidating the performance of an imidazoline-based surfactant

A combination of electrochemical measurement and interface analysis have been applied to characterise the interaction of OMID, an exemplar imidazoline-based corrosion inhibitor, with carbon steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid. Corrosion inhibition efficiency data indicate that excellent performance is achieved well below the critical micelle concentration. High resolution X-ray photoelectron spectra demonstrate that, as the corrosion rate decreases, the interface evolves towards one comprising OMID bound to film-free carbon steel. This latter result provides key input for those researchers attempting to predict corrosion inhibitor functionality through atomic scale interfacial modelling, and so identify next generation chemistries.

The inhibitive activity of 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid (SA) on the corrosion of carbon steel in 1 M HCl medium has been studied by weight loss, potentiodynamic, and impedance spectroscopy measurements. Experimental results reveal that sulphanilic acid goes about as an inhibitor in the corrosive condition. The inhibition efficiency increases with an increase in the SA concentration. The greatest inhibition efficiency is 92.14% at SA concentration 1000 ppm. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters have been got from temperature studies. Electrochemical estimation reveals that sulphanilic acid acts as a mixed inhibitor and the adsorption isotherm follows Langmuir. The surface examination by SEM and surface composition was evaluated using EDX that shows the presence of a protective layer of SA molecules on the surface.
