Characteristics and scenarios projection of NEE change in an alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau

Fourteen years data of eddy covariance measurements at an alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) were used to characterise the statistical features of NEE and its relationship with temperature variations. A statistical model was obtained by using the Michaelis-Menten equations of the light-response curve for predicting the NEE for future climate warming. The results show that less than 2 degrees increase of temperature would not have much influence on the CO2 absorption amount of the ecosystem, while over 2.6 degrees increase of temperature would change the CO2 absorption into CO2 release and 4.8 degree increase of temperature would induce a large amount of CO2 release from the alpine meadow ecosystem (about 166.8 gC/m2/year). This means that over a 2 degrees warming like RCP8.5 scenario in the future would jeopardise future carbon sink capacity at the alpine meadow ecosystem on the TP.

Current and Future Carbon Storage Capacity in a Southeastern Pennsylvania Forest

Temperate forests have a strong carbon sink capacity, although the future of this ecosystem service is uncertain in the eastern United States in light of widespread changes affecting succession. This study quantified aboveground carbon accumulation and storage in a southeastern Pennsylvania forest fragment, while assessing whether carbon storage capacity will be supported in the future. Six 0.2 ha plots were censused in 2013 and 2018 for living tree and dead wood carbon storage, as well as tree species composition. Three plots were in a 100-year-old forest, while the remainder were in a 200-year-old forest. Living tree carbon storage increased significantly over time (p 60 cm). Compositional data suggest decreased future canopy tree diversity, with the native Fagus grandifolia and nonnative Acer platanoides dominating forest understories. While there is high living tree carbon storage capacity, the dead wood pool will increase over time as many large trees die. Intervention to augment regeneration and maintain sink strength in the 200-year-old forest is needed. Action to limit the spread of A. platanoides and increase native regeneration throughout the forest will support forest resilience and long-term carbon storage capacity. Assessments of understory conditions are critical in supporting forests' carbon sink capacity into the future.

Tree mode of death and mortality risk factors across Amazon forests

The carbon sink capacity of tropical forests is substantially affected by tree mortality. However, the main drivers of tropical tree death remain largely unknown. Here we present a pan-Amazonian assessment of how and why trees die, analysing over 120,000 trees representing > 3800 species from 189 long-term RAINFOR forest plots. While tree mortality rates vary greatly Amazon-wide, on average trees are as likely to die standing as they are broken or uprooted—modes of death with different ecological consequences. Species-level growth rate is the single most important predictor of tree death in Amazonia, with faster-growing species being at higher risk. Within species, however, the slowest-growing trees are at greatest risk while the effect of tree size varies across the basin. In the driest Amazonian region species-level bioclimatic distributional patterns also predict the risk of death, suggesting that these forests are experiencing climatic conditions beyond their adaptative limits. These results provide not only a holistic pan-Amazonian picture of tree death but large-scale evidence for the overarching importance of the growth–survival trade-off in driving tropical tree mortality.

High nitrogen addition decreases the ozone flux by reducing the maximum stomatal conductance in poplar saplings.

Ground-level ozone (O3) and nitrogen (N) deposition are major environmental pollutants, often occurring concurrently. Ozone exposure- and flux-response relationships for tree biomass are used for regional O3 risk assessment. In order to investigate whether soil N addition affects stomatal O3 uptake of poplar, poplar saplings were exposed to treatment combinations of five O3 levels and four N addition levels. High N addition treatment reduced the accumulated stomatal O3 uptake in the leaf due to reduced maximum stomatal conductance (gs). Nitrogen addition also significantly reduced the steady-state light-saturated gs in August and September. Elevated O3 significantly reduced and N addition increased total plant biomass; however, there were no significant O3×N interactions. The slopes of biomass-based O3 exposure- and flux-response relationships did not differ significantly among N treatments. The critical levels for a 5% biomass reduction were estimated at 15.4ppmh and 17.1mmol O3 m-2 projected leaf area (PLA) for Accumulated O3 exposure Over an hourly Threshold of 40ppb (AOT40) and Phytotoxic Ozone Dose above a threshold 1nmol O3 m-2 PLA s-1 (POD1). These results can facilitate the evaluations of O3 effect on the carbon-sink capacity and productivity of forest.

Nutrient addition increases rotifer abundance and diversity in a temperate bog

Rotifers are among the smallest metazoan animals living in lakes, ponds, rivers and in interstitial water within Sphagnum mats. When in sufficient numbers they are capable of regenerating large amounts of nitrogen (N) as NO3 and NH4 and phosphorus (P) as PO4; all of these nutrients are immediately available to bog plants. The ecological role of rotifers in bog ecosystems has been recognized at both local and global scales, but the effect of N and P addition on rotifers in bogs remains unknown. Here we present data on the influence of N and P addition on rotifers at a temperate Canadian bog dominated by Sphagnum mosses. We found that rotifer species abundance and diversity were significantly higher in surficial pore water after long-term exposure to increased N and P addition than in the control. A change in plant species distribution and increased rotifer abundance may partly explain the faster decomposition rates, jeopardizing the carbon sink capacity of bogs.

North American temperate conifer (Tsuga canadensis) reveals a complex physiological response to climatic and anthropogenic stressors.

Rising atmospheric CO2 (ca) is expected to promote tree growth and lower water loss via changes in leaf gas exchange. However, uncertainties remain if gas-exchange regulation strategies are homeostatic or dynamical in response to increasing ca, as well as evolving climate and pollution inputs. Using a suite of tree ring-based δ13C-derived physiological parameters (Δ13C, ci, iWUE) and tree growth from a mesic, low elevation stand of canopy-dominant Tsuga canadensis in north-eastern USA, we investigated the influence of rising ca, climate and pollution on, and characterised the dynamical regulation strategy of, leaf gas exchange at multidecadal scales. Isotopic and growth time series revealed an evolving physiological response in which the species shifted its leaf gas-exchange strategy dynamically (constant ci; constant ci/ca; constant ca-ci) in response to rising ca, moisture availability and site conditions over 111yr. Tree iWUE plateaued after 1975, driven by greater moisture availability and a changing soil biogeochemistry that may have impaired a stomatal response. Results suggested that trees may exhibit more complex physiological responses to the changing environmental conditions over multidecadal periods, and complicating the parameterisation of Earth system models and the estimation of future carbon sink capacity and water balance in midlatitude forests and elsewhere.

Spatial patterns of vegetation carbon sinks and sources under water constraint in Central Asia

The terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle is a major contributing factor in the rise in global average temperature. Based on the net ecosystem production (NEP) calculation model and classifications, the spatial distribution patterns of carbon sources and sinks for vegetation in Central Asia are analyzed. The results show obvious zonal characteristics in the distribution of carbon sources and sinks. Carbon source areas form the majority and are mainly located in south-central Kazakhstan and parts of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, while most carbon sink areas are located in northern Kazakhstan, Kyrghyzstan and Tajikistan. NEP shows a downward trend during 2000–2015, indicating decreasing capacities of low and high carbon sinks in forest land, sparse vegetation, and bare areas. Even a weakening in the carbon sink capacity resulted in no significant decrease, indicating instead a decline in grassland quality. The change in NEP matches the change in terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP). Water is the limiting factor for ecological attributes in arid and semi-arid areas, with drought influencing both the carbon budget and balance. These conclusions are critical for maintaining ecological stability and sustainable economic development in the Silk Road Economic Belt.

Response of the Organic Carbon Fractions and Stability of Soil to Alpine Marsh Degradation in Zoige, East Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions play a crucial role in the carbon cycle of alpine wetland ecosystems and regional climate regulation. In the last decades, alpine marshes at Tibetan Plateau have undergone increased degradation. The effects of marsh degradation on soil labile and recalcitrant organic carbon fractions and on SOC stability remain unclear. In this study, we investigated changes in SOC fractions with different biochemical recalcitrance and stability in the marsh ecosystems with various levels of degradation in the Zoige Wetland, Eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Soil samples of relatively pristine marsh (RPM), lightly degraded marsh (LDM), moderately degraded marsh (MDM), heavily degraded marsh (HDM) and severely degraded marsh (SDM) were collected and analysed using the acid hydrolysis method. Compared with RPM, the concentrations of SOC labile fraction I (non-cellulosic polysaccharides), SOC labile fraction II (cellulose) and recalcitrant organic carbon (ROC) in degraded marshes decreased significantly: 29–97, 38–95 and 32–99%, respectively, except for the LDM. The SOC recalcitrance index (RIc) in the HDM and SDM was significantly lower than that in RPM by 11–35 and 15–47%, respectively; compared with RPM, the stability of organic carbon was significantly lower in the HDM and SDM. Additionally, the marsh degradation increased vertical variation in the concentrations of SOC fractions. The degradation of alpine marshes decreases the capacity for carbon (C) sequestration via decreasing the resistance of SOC to biodegradation, indicating that the alpine marsh degradation may weaken the carbon sink capacity of the Zoige Plateau, thus aggravating the global greenhouse effect.

Weather, pollution and biotic factors drive net forest - atmosphere exchange of CO2 at different temporal scales in a temperate-zone mixed forest

Understanding the drivers of net ecosystem exchange of carbon (NEE) between forests and the atmosphere is crucial for the prediction of future global carbon dynamics. We therefore analyzed the long-term (1999–2014) ecosystem carbon fluxes of a mixed coniferous/deciduous forest (Brasschaat forest) in the Campine ecoregion of Belgium. The carbon uptake of this forest increased over the 16-year study period. By consecutively performing time series decomposition and the statistical technique of random forests, the correlative strength between multiple meteorological drivers, tropospheric pollutants and biotic indices with NEE was quantified at different time scales: i.e., long-term, seasonal and weekly, and separately for day- and nighttime NEE fluxes. The drivers that were most correlated with the trend in carbon sink capacity were the increasing atmospheric CO2 level and soil recovery from acidification. The radiation-saturated carbon uptake increased remarkably and explained much of the long-term variability of daytime NEE. When the long-term and seasonal variation were extracted the remaining weekly variation in daytime NEE was most strongly correlated with variation in the incoming radiation and cloudiness, and to a lesser extent by variation in vapor pressure deficit. In contrast to daytime NEE, nighttime NEE did not show a steady trend over time, but fluctuated, peaking in 1999 and in 2011. The long-term variability in nighttime NEE was most strongly correlated with the groundwater table depth. Air temperature was highly correlated to the seasonal as well as to the remaining weekly variation, i.e., after removal of the long-term and seasonal variability, in nighttime NEE. Biotic drivers (e.g., quantum yield and radiation-saturated carbon uptake) explained less of the variation in NEE on a seasonal and short-term scale, but were more important at the long term.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of bamboo forest net primary productivity with climate variations in Southeast China

Net primary productivity (NPP) is an important indicator of forest biomass accumulation as well as carbon sink capacity. Bamboo forests have gained much attention because of their high carbon sequestration potential. However, the estimations of bamboo forest NPP based on field investigations and statistical analyses in previous studies have varied and do not accurately reflect the spatiotemporal dynamics at the regional level, leading to missing information on the long-term spatiotemporal variations and the formative mechanisms of bamboo forest NPP. We used a process-based ecosystem model to estimate the spatiotemporal dynamics of bamboo forest NPP based on continuous forest resources inventory datasets for Zhejiang Province, China, from 2001 to 2015. Estimates of NPP increased from 250.75 g C m−2 year−1 in 2001 to 409.09 g C m−2 year−1 in 2015 and accounted for approximately 9.39% of the total NPP of forests in Zhejiang Province. A total of 67.51% of the bamboo forested area showed increasing NPP trends, and most increases occurred in the northwest, southwest, and eastern hilly regions of Zhejiang Province. The spatiotemporal patterns of bamboo forest NPP were sensitive to climatic factors and significantly correlated with precipitation. However, human activities, such as management measures, management levels, and policies, also had effects on the NPP of bamboo forests. This improved understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics of bamboo forest NPP could provide a reference for the sustainable management of bamboo forests, and we will explore the response of the bamboo forest NPP to future climate changes in later studies.

Modelling past and future peatland carbon dynamics across the pan-Arctic.

The majority of northern peatlands were initiated during the Holocene. Owing to their mass imbalance, they have sequestered huge amounts of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems. Although recent syntheses have filled some knowledge gaps, the extent and remoteness of many peatlands pose challenges to developing reliable regional carbon accumulation estimates from observations. In this work, we employed an individual- and patch-based dynamic global vegetation model (LPJ-GUESS) with peatland and permafrost functionality to quantify long-term carbon accumulation rates in northern peatlands and to assess the effects of historical and projected future climate change on peatland carbon balance. We combined published datasets of peat basal age to form an up-to-date peat inception surface for the pan-Arctic region which we then used to constrain the model. We divided our analysis into two parts, with a focus both on the carbon accumulation changes detected within the observed peatland boundary and at pan-Arctic scale under two contrasting warming scenarios (representative concentration pathway-RCP8.5 and RCP2.6). We found that peatlands continue to act as carbon sinks under both warming scenarios, but their sink capacity will be substantially reduced under the high-warming (RCP8.5) scenario after 2050. Areas where peat production was initially hampered by permafrost and low productivity were found to accumulate more carbon because of the initial warming and moisture-rich environment due to permafrost thaw, higher precipitation and elevated CO2 levels. On the other hand, we project that areas which will experience reduced precipitation rates and those without permafrost will lose more carbon in the near future, particularly peatlands located in the European region and between 45 and 55°N latitude. Overall, we found that rapid global warming could reduce the carbon sink capacity of the northern peatlands in the coming decades.

Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks in Three Types of Larix gmelinii Forests in Daxing’an Mountains, Northeast China

Studying carbon and nitrogen stocks in different types of larch forest ecosystems is of great significance for assessing the carbon sink capacity and nitrogen level in larch forests. To evaluate the effects of the differences of forest type on the carbon and nitrogen stock capacity of the larch forest ecosystem, we selected three typical types of larch forest ecosystems in the northern part of Daxing’an Mountains, which were the Rhododendron simsii-Larix gmelinii forest (RL), Ledum palustre-Larix gmelinii forest (LL) and Sphagnum-Bryum-Ledum palustre-Larix gmelinii forest (SLL), to determine the carbon and nitrogen stocks in the vegetation (trees and understories), litter and soil. Results showed that there were significant differences in carbon and nitrogen stocks among the three types of larch forest ecosystems, showing a sequence of SLL (288.01 Mg·ha−1 and 25.19 Mg·ha−1) > LL (176.52 Mg·ha−1 and 14.85 Mg·ha−1) > RL (153.93 Mg·ha−1 and 10.00 Mg·ha−1) (P < 0.05). The largest proportions of carbon and nitrogen stocks were found in soils, accounting for 83.20%, 72.89% and 64.61% of carbon stocks and 98.61%, 97.58% and 96.00% of nitrogen stocks in the SLL, LL and RL, respectively. Also, it was found that significant differences among the three types of larch forest ecosystems in terms of soil carbon and nitrogen stocks (SLL > LL > RL) (P < 0.05) were the primary reasons for the differences in the ecosystem carbon and nitrogen stocks. More than 79% of soil carbon and 51% of soil nitrogen at a depth of 0–100 cm were stored in the upper 50 cm of the soil pool. In the vegetation layer, due to the similar tree biomass carbon and nitrogen stocks, there were no significant differences in carbon and nitrogen stocks among the three types of larch forest ecosystems. The litter carbon stock in the SLL was significantly higher than that in the LL and RL (P < 0.05), but no significant differences in nitrogen stock were found among them (P > 0.05). These findings suggest that different forest types with the same tree layer and different understory vegetation can greatly affect the carbon and nitrogen stock capacity of the forest ecosystem. This indicates that understory vegetation may have significant effects on the carbon and nitrogen stocks in soil and litter, which highlights the need to consider the effects of understory in future research into the carbon and nitrogen stock capacity of forest ecosystems.

India’s contribution to mitigating the impacts of climate change through vegetation management

The changes in natural ecosystems provide opportunity to increase vegetation carbon sink capacity and thereby contribute to mitigation of climate change impacts. The Indian tropics and the large ecological variation within the country afford the advantage of diverse niches and offer opportunities to reveal the role of biotic factors at different levels of organization from populations to ecosystems. The last 4 decades of research and development in the Indian space science community has been primarily application driven in response to the government space programme for national development. The expenditure in R&D over next 5 year suggest that scientific research is higher on the country's agenda. The Indo-UK Terrestrial Carbon Group (IUTCG) comprising both Indian and UK scientists, funded jointly by the Department of Science and Technology, India and the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills organised a workshop to explore ways in which Earth observation data can be effectively utilised in mitigating the impacts of climate change through vegetation management. Effective integration of field observations, collected through various monitoring networks, and satellite sensor data has been proposed to provide country-wide monitoring.

Carbon Balance of Grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau under Future Climate Change: A Review

Climate change has brought significant impacts upon the natural ecological environment and human social development. The future carbon balance study has become an important part of research on the impacts of climate change. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is a key area for studying climate change. Grassland, as a typical ecosystem of the QTP, embodies the sensitivity of the plateau to the climatic environment, so the carbon balance of grassland under future climate change conditions is important for studying global change. This paper reviewed the literature on carbon balance projection of grassland on the QTP under climate change. Two types of research methods were used to analyze and discuss the studies’ results, including experimental scenario projection and model projection. The experiment projected that appropriate temperature and moisture could enhance the carbon sink capacity of a grassland ecosystem, where moisture played a leading role. The model projection results showed that the carbon balance under different spatial and temporal scales were different. Although both can project the carbon balance of the study area, there are still some uncertainties. In addition, this research area should also consider the influence of human activity and plateau pikas to more accurately project the future carbon balance.

As a party to the Paris Agreement Russia pledged not to exceed the net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions’ level of 70–75% to that existed in 1990. Energy efficiency improvement, structural shifts in production and the increase of Russian forests’ carbon sink capacity were the key contributors to curbing the GHG emissions in Russia during the last 25 years. The decreasing carbon intensity of the GDP was a natural result of economic growth and implementation of voluntary business projects to improve the efficiency of the industrial sector using investments in modernization of the production facilities. Russia disposes significant potential to reduce GHG emissions, but the feasibility and efficiency of respective measures should be evaluated considering the implications to economic growth. Implementation of the socalled aggressive scenario to halt global temperature growth at any cost within 1.5 °C as compared to the pre-industrial era is unacceptable to Russia from socioeconomic perspective given its leading to lowering the average annual GDP growth rate by 1.8 percentage points by 2050. In addition, tough measures to reduce GHG emissions involve energy costs skyrocketing to unprecedented levels – from the current 13% of the GDP to 30% of the GDP by 2040. Such a burden would hardly be compatible with economic growth or, in any case, provide for the economic growth’s providing for improvement of the communities’ standard of living. Russia needs the long-term development strategy with low GHG emissions level focused on improving the quality of living, modernizing and increasing the competitiveness of the national economy. Such a strategy rests on the following principles: 1) Russia has been the world leader in the GHG emissions reduction since 1990, so no solid reason exists for its soonest switching to excessively stringent climate commitments which result in ungrounded additional restrictions to its socio-economic development pace; 2) The core impediment to sustainable development of Russia is not a high level of the GHG emissions, but economic stagnation. Given that the reasonable scenario of the GHG emissions reduction implies the development path that allows the national economy to grow at a rate of 3% average annual GDP as the least; 3) Action priorities in the area of the GHG sinking should involve improvement of the LULUCF sector potential by promoting sound natural resources management policy and voluntary projects to increase carbon sink and reservoir capacity of the forest and wetland ecosystems; 4) Action priorities to reduce GHG emissions assume the imperative and expediency of economic stimulating of the structural change in the energy sector that involves production and technological chains within the country and do not provide for excessive price growth. Such change includes increasing use of natural gas (as the most “clean” fossil fuel) and nuclear energy (given Russia’s leading position in the nuclear technology area), as well as cogeneration of electricity and heat. Pronounced increase in using renewables, energy storage systems and electric vehicles should be acceptable only if production of these is successfully localized and costs are reduced. Sustainable economic growth is a prerequisite for intensifying energy efficiency improvement as it involves modernization of the production facilities and using available and competitive industrial capacities. Specific measures targeted at energy savings will be inefficient given economic stagnation. A reasonable (smart) scenario of the Russia long-term economic development with the low GHG emissions level should comply with the principles above and its driving force propelled by structural and technological modernization of the economy that fully involves economic potential of the energy resource and power sector. The implementation of this development scenario would allow Russia to comply with the Paris Agreement national commitments while ensuring economic growth at the pace not yielding to that of the global average.

Enhanced Carbon Uptake and Reduced Methane Emissions in a Newly Restored Wetland

AbstractWetlands play an important role in reducing global warming potential in response to global climate change. Unfortunately, due to the effects of human disturbance and natural erosion, wetlands are facing global extinction. It is essential to implement engineering measures to restore damaged wetlands. However, the carbon sink capacity of restored wetlands is unclear. We examined the seasonal change of greenhouse gas emissions in both restored wetland and natural wetland and then evaluated the carbon sequestration capacity of the restored wetland. We found that (1) the carbon sink capacity of the restored wetland showed clear daily and seasonal change, which was affected by light intensity, air temperature, and vegetation growth, and (2) the annual daytime (8–18 hr) sustained‐flux global warming potential was −11.23 ± 4.34 kg CO2 m−2 y−1, representing a much larger carbon sink than natural wetland (−5.04 ± 3.73 kg CO2 m−2 y−1) from April to December. In addition, the results showed that appropriate tidal flow management may help to reduce CH4 emission in wetland restoration. Thus, we proposed that the restored coastal wetland, via effective engineering measures, reliably acted as a large net carbon sink and has the potential to help mitigate climate change.

Microbial communities associated with decomposing deadwood of downy birch in a natural forest in Khibiny Mountains (Kola Peninsula, Russian Federation)

Deadwood plays an important role in the forest ecosystems, providing nutrients and habitat for a wide range of organisms, preventing soil erosion, and improving carbon storage. Microorganisms are primary agents in wood decomposition. The aim of the present research is to describe the changes in diversity, structure and abundance of microbial communities over downy birch lying deadwood decomposition in a boreal forest under natural conditions. This study also included investigations on the potential involvement of deadwood in climate change.The decomposition of deadwood was visually assessed using a five-class system. The microbial community diversity and composition were assessed with polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) fingerprinting. Real time PCR was used to evaluate the absolute and relative microbial abundance. The potential involvement of deadwood in climate change was assessed by in situ-measuring of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from downy birch lying deadwood and from soil.The results obtained indicate that deadwood represents a substrate whose physico-chemical and microbiological property change with time. Higher diversity of fungi, bacteria, and archaea were recorded in the decay class 5. Conversely, actinobacteria showed the lowest values of diversity in decay class 5. We observed a succession of dominant microbial taxa over the decomposition progress. Overall, the abundance of each microbial group increases with the advance of decomposition. Among the estimated physico-chemical properties, nitrogen content, that increased with decay, and pH were the most important candidate drivers of microbial community composition and abundance. CO2 emissions were recorded higher in the decay class 5 and in soil of plots with the highest amount of lying deadwood.Bacteria dominated the microbial community and may play a more important role in the late stages of wood decomposition conversely to fungi and actinobacteria that are assumed to be primary involved in early stages of wood colonization. Archaea are shown to be an integral and dynamic component of decaying wood biota. The presence of large amounts of deadwood may affect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially in the event of an increase in temperatures that could reduce the carbon (C) sink capacity of the boreal forests.

Modern Urban Planning and Design Based on Low Carbon Economy Concept

To accelerate the development of low-carbon industry in Zhaoqing City, transform the mode of economic growth, and promote industrial transformation and upgrading, the SWOT analysis method was applied. From the four aspects of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, the feasibility of developing a low-carbon economy in Zhaoqing was systematically analyzed. From the adjustment of industrial structure, the optimization of energy structure, the promotion of low-carbon tourism, the development of circular economy, and the enhancement of carbon sink capacity, the development path of low-carbon economy was explored. Based on the above analysis, a low carbon development plan was prepared. From the implementation of low-carbon development strategy, the choice of low-carbon economy pilot, and the low-carbon economic security system, the implementation steps of Zhaoqing's low-carbon economy were discussed in detail. The results showed that the low-carbon economy concept provided some ideas for Zhaoqing's economic development. Therefore, Zhaoqing is still in its infancy. The city's transportation system is not perfect. To develop a low-carbon economy, governments, enterprises, and individuals need to participate actively.

Managing soils for resolving the conflict between agriculture and nature: The hard talk

AbstractAmong soil‐centric options for addressing global issues being intensely debated by soil scientists, ecologists and earth scientists regarding their effectiveness and applicability are: (a) harnessing soil carbon (C) sink capacity for adaptation and mitigation of climate change; (b) reducing soil erosion as a source of greenhouse gases and the need to include it in the global C budget; (c) enhancing use efficiency of inputs to agroecosystems and returning land, water and other resources back to nature; (d) using global drylands, saline culture, halomorphic plants and brackish water for provisioning of ecosystem services; and (e) adopting a system‐based conservation agriculture for eco‐intensification of agroecosystems as a strategy of “producing more from less”. Not only should agriculture be made a solution for addressing global issues, but it is also essential to reconciling the need for advancing food and nutritional security with the absolute necessity of enhancing the environment, restoring degraded soils and desertified ecosystems, and advancing Sustainable Development Goals or the Agenda 2030.Highlights Sustainable soil management, degraded soil restoration abridging agronomic yield gap and improving the environment are important to achieve world peace. Sustainable eco‐intensification of agro‐ecosystems reduces inputs and enhances use efficiency by restoring soil health. Harnessing soil carbon sink capacity includes reducing accelerated soil erosion for adaptation and mitigation of climate change. System‐based conservation agriculture sustains agronomic productivity and minimizes soil degradation and environmental pollution.
