Drivers’ range anxiety and cost of new EV chargers in Amsterdam: a scenario-based optimization approach

ABSTRACT Due to the sharp growth in the adaptation of electric vehicles (EV) in the Netherlands and the objectives of the Dutch Climate Accord is to encourage electric mobility, in the coming decades a substantial number of new EV charging facilities needs to be provided. Efficient planning of EV charging infrastructure is coupled with the notion of range anxiety, which is likely to be severely high in case of soon-to-be EV drivers. This study aims to estimate the cost of developing a new charging infrastructure under five scenarios of range anxiety in Amsterdam East. Employing a Linear Integer Programming optimization model, on the basis of geographic data on car registration, existing EV chargers, and electricity substations, it is obtained that if drivers use 90% of their battery before using a charging facility, the existing charging infrastructure needs to be expanded by only 31% to accommodate almost seven times larger number of EVs – the threshold set by the European Union (EU) legislation on the deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure. If drivers use only 30% of the batteries; however, an increase of 167% in infrastructure is inevitable (accounting for almost five million euro of cost). Second, at any point along the range anxiety spectrum, if the interval between charging session increases for 1 day, the overall cost decreases by more than 30%. These findings are discussed, and two policy approaches are proposed: (1) information technology approach; (2) demand-response approach, on the basis of EU legislation on energy efficiency and deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure.

The effect of car sharing on car sales

Free-Floating Car Sharing is a potential substitute to private car ownership. Its staggered rollout in German cities is exploited with a difference-in-difference methodology using an original administrative panel dataset on car registrations to estimate the effect of Free-Floating Car Sharing on new car sales. One car sharing vehicle reduces annual new car sales by three vehicles. This effect is driven by a reduction in sales of small, compact and medium-sized car models.

Estimation of Cold Roll Forming Characteristics of Wrought Magnesium Alloy with Tension-Compression Asymmetry

In recent years, the movement for banning the sale of gasoline cars and diesel vehicles, especially in Europe, and allowing only electric passenger cars has been accelerated. For examples, Germany’s federal council, the Bundesrat, has passed a resolution calling for a ban on combustion engine cars by 2030. If the ban were to go through, German citizens would only be permitted to purchase electric or hydrogen-fueled cars. In Norway, until 2025 there is a movement for legislation prohibiting the registration of new gasoline passenger cars and diesel cars. Beginning in 2025 in the Netherlands, a bill prohibiting the sale of new cars gasoline and diesel vehicles was submitted to Congress. Under the circumstances, the demand for light-weight products for automotive industries has increased due to global trends in environmental preservation. Although demands for magnesium has risen dramatically, production of magnesium alloy sheet still remains at a very low level. This study seeks to establish a guideline for roll design in the roll forming of wrought magnesium alloys to extend practical use of roll-formed products of wrought magnesium alloys. A three-dimensional elasto-plastic analysis by the finite-element method has been conducted to express exact roll-forming behavior of wrought magnesium alloys that have different stress-strain curves in tension and compression. Simple V-sections were formed by a tandem six-stand roll forming machine to demonstrate the effectiveness of the simulation methods with different stress-strain curves in the case of tension and compression. Also, spring-back analysis has been performed to investigate the exact cold roll-forming phenomenon for wrought magnesium alloy sheets.

Japanese‐brand auto sales in China under the shadow of oppositional sentiments

AbstractThis study uses the interstate political conflict in 2010 to study the impacts of oppositional sentiment on product sales of Japanese‐brand automobiles in China. By using the nationwide automobile registration data in China, we conduct difference‐in‐differences analysis and find direct evidence on Chinese consumers’ boycott of Japanese‐brand autos. It is individual buyers rather than business or government entity buyers that boycotted Japanese cars significantly. War memory, nationalist education, and protests contributed to the intensity of boycott activities, and the boycott effect was long‐lasting. Older‐generation buyers boycotted Japanese cars more significantly, but younger‐generation buyers living in cities with historical war experience or patriotic education bases boycotted Japanese cars more actively than their counterparts in other cities.

Evaluating REDD+ at subnational level: Amazon fund impacts in Alta Floresta, Brazil

The Amazon Fund is the world's largest program to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), funded with over US $1b donated by Norway and Germany between 2008 and 2017 to reward Brazil for prior deforestation reductions. Olhos D'Água da Amazônia is cited as a leading project success − with over one thousand small-to-medium-sized crop and livestock producers in the municipality of Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso State receiving more from the Amazon Fund than all but two other municipalities. To secure property rights, aid environmental planning, and raise farmers' productivity and output diversity, the project helped farmers register in Brazil's environmental cadaster and receive property certificates. Furthermore, Olhos D'Água supported milk and honey production and paid farmers to conserve riverine forest sites. We estimate causal effects of Olhos D'Água, versus a counterfactual estimate of what would have happened without the project, using a synthetic-control method. We build from the pool of blacklisted municipalities weighted averages (synthetic controls) that best match pre-treatment outcomes for Alta Floresta. Project effects are estimated as post-treatment differences between Alta Floresta and the synthetic controls. We find that the project increased new CAR registrations, and INCRA certifications, and may have moderately increased honey and milk production. Alta Floresta's annual forest losses remained historically low but we find no clear causal effect of the project on deforestation rates. Our results support that rigorous impact evaluation can motivate and guide project improvements.

Stick or Carrot? Asymmetric Responses to Vehicle Registration Taxes in Norway

Vehicle registrations have been shown to strongly react to tax reforms aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from passengers’ cars, but are the effects equally strong for positive and negative tax changes? The literature on asymmetric reactions to price and tax changes has documented similar results for everyday goods, but has not yet considered durables. We leverage multiple vehicle registration tax (VRT) reforms in Norway to show that, within car model, new car registrations react to tax cuts and fee-bates significantly more than to tax increases. The estimated elasticity is -1.99 for VRT decreases and 0.77 for increases.

Influence of Marketing, Financial and Digital Technologies in the Development of Infocommunication Sphere as a Component of Innovation Infrastructure

The purpose of the article is to consider and analyze marketing, financial and digital technologies that influence the development of the infocommunication sphere as a component of the innovation infrastructure. The main components of the infocommunication sphere are considered in the article. The essence of marketing, financial and digital technologies and their influence on the development of infocommunication sphere is revealed. The financial, marketing and digital components of information communication development are analyzed. The necessity of development of infocommunication sphere for participants is considered: public authorities, business structures, population. Prospects of infocommunication technologies as a component of innovation infrastructure are considered. The scientific article considers the integral system of the infocommunication sphere as a component of the innovation infrastructure, considers the process of interaction of the participants of the infocommunication sphere, analyzes the expenditures of the State budget for the infocommunication sphere. Considerable attention is paid to the prospects and expected benefits of the introduction of marketing, financial and digital technologies for the infocommunication sphere. The advantages of development of infocommunication sphere for participants are considered in the work. For business, these are social contributions of employees, corporate tax, VAT, registration of a new company, submission of statistical information, customs declarations, environmental permits, public procurement. For citizens, the list is more extended, job search, social benefits, personal documents, car registration, public libraries, application to the police, application for a building permit, marriage and birth certificates, applications for university admission, change of address, health services ‘I. Measures for further development of the information society in Ukraine are considered. Thus, the identified strategic objectives of creating a modern innovation system, which will include technology and science parks, venture funds, technology transfer networks, etc., requires the introduction of public-private (public-private) partnerships in the innovation sphere and should be aimed at legislatively establishing incentives for new industries, as well as companies in the field of infocommunications.

Implementation of the Blockchain in the Optimization of the Security of Transport Documents (Driver's License and Vehicules Registration Cards)

Data security has become very important nowadays, especially with the increase of data from the big data, forcing each sector to review its security system. The security of driving license and the vehicle registration is always attributed to an authority. This authority can be public or private. In Cameroon, in the transport sector, the security of the driving license and the vehicle registration document is attributed to two private authorities. Presprint Pl for the driving license and High Tech Telesoft for the vehicle registration card. Their objective is to prove the authenticity, availability and confidentiality of the holder of the driving license or car registration card. But until now, the security of these transport documents has encountered certains problems such as the fact that some individuals possess false driver's licenses or false vehicle registration cards. Sometimes with the complicity of certain system managers, the time taken by an applicant to obtain his driver's license or vehicle registration card, the management of the data to be secured by a single authority. Faced with this situation, in order to ensure that only qualified persons who have received appropriate driver training and hold a authentic driving license can be authorized to drive vehicles. The security of the system will be optimized through the use of blockchain technology, in allowing transparency in data management and without a central authority.
