Aerobic and anaerobic poise of white swimming muscles of the deep-diving scalloped hammerhead shark: comparison to sympatric coastal and deep-water species

Scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) routinely perform rapid dives to forage on mesopelagic prey. These deep dives consist of intensive swimming followed by recovery periods in the surface mixed layer. Swimming muscle temperature profiles suggest that S. lewini suppresses gill function as a means to reduce convective heat loss during dives into cool water. Such intensive swimming behavior coupled with reduced respiration prompted us to test whether the aerobic and anaerobic metabolic capacities of the white swimming muscle tissue of this species are greater than those of other shark species from the same region. The activities of key enzymes used in aerobic and anaerobic metabolism provide an indirect indicator of the metabolic potential (“poise”) of a tissue. Here we measured the maximal activities [international units (µmol substrate converted to product per min, U) per gram of wet tissue mass at 10°C] of the citric acid cycle enzymes citrate synthase (CS) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and glycolytic enzymes pyruvate kinase (PK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) from white swimming muscle of S. lewini. Enzyme activities, and ratios of these enzyme activities that indicate relative indexes of aerobic to anaerobic capacity, were compared to those measured in three sympatric coastal carcharhinid sharks and two deep-dwelling species, Echinorhinus cookei and Hexanchus griseus. This is the first report of swimming-muscle enzyme activity for these deep-dwelling species. In comparison to the other species, S. lewini had significantly higher activities of both LDH and MDH in the white muscle, and a higher MDH/CS ratio. The high LDH activities suggest that the white muscle of S. lewini relies on relatively high rates of anaerobic ATP production, with would result in build up of high lactate levels, during deep foraging dives. High MDH activity in S. lewini white muscle suggests the potential for lactate levels to be rapidly reduced when aerobic conditions are restored while in the surface mixed layer between dives. These biochemical characteristics may enable S. lewini to swim rapidly while suppressing gill function during deep dives and thereby exploit a very different ecological niche from sympatric shark species (e.g., coastal carcharhinids) and hunt more rapidly via faster swimming for deep-water prey compared to species that permanently inhabit deep depths.

Anaerobic and Aerobic Metabolic Capacities Contributing to Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Level 2 Test Performance in Australian Rules Footballers.

This study aimed to identify the aerobic and anaerobic metabolic performance capacities contributing to Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery level 2 (Yo-Yo IR2) test performance. Nineteen recreational Australian footballers completed a Yo-Yo IR2 test, and on another day a treadmill peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) and maximal accumulated oxygen deficit test in a randomised counter-balanced order. The maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) procedures included 5 × 5 min sub-maximal continuous runs at progressively higher speeds whilst VO2 was recorded; thereafter, speed was incrementally increased to elicit VO2peak. After 35 min of rest, participants ran at a speed equivalent to 115% of VO2peak until exhaustion, at which point expired air was collected to determine maximal accumulated oxygen deficit. Relationships between variables were assessed using Pearson's correlation and partial correlations. Maximum aerobic speed, relative intensity, and VO2peak were significantly correlated with Yo-Yo IR2 performance. High Yo-Yo IR2 performers also had higher MAS, relative intensity, and VO2peak levels. However, when higher maximum aerobic speed, relative intensity, and VO2peak were controlled for each other and analysed independently, neither maximal aerobic speed nor VO2peak correlated with Yo-Yo IR2 performance. Yo-Yo IR2 performance is the result of a complex interaction between several variables. Training programs should primarily focus on improving VO2peak, maximal aerobic speed, and relative intensity to optimize Yo-Yo IR2 test performance.

Consistent changes in muscle metabolism underlie dive performance across multiple lineages of diving ducks.

Diving animals must sustain high activity with limited O2 stores to successfully capture prey. Studies suggest that increasing body O2 stores supports breath-hold diving, but less is known about metabolic specializations that underlie underwater locomotion. We measured maximal activities of 10 key enzymes in locomotory muscles (gastrocnemius and pectoralis) to identify biochemical changes associated with diving in pathways of oxidative and substrate-level phosphorylation and compared them across three groups of ducks-the longest diving sea ducks (eight spp.), the mid-tier diving pochards (three spp.) and the non-diving dabblers (five spp.). Relative to dabblers, both diving groups had increased activities of succinate dehydrogenase and cytochrome c oxidase, and sea ducks further showed increases in citrate synthase (CS) and hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (HOAD). Both diving groups had relative decreases in capacity for anaerobic metabolism (lower ratio of lactate dehydrogenase to CS), with sea ducks also showing a greater capacity for oxidative phosphorylation and lipid oxidation (lower ratio of pyruvate kinase to CS, higher ratio of HOAD to hexokinase). These data suggest that the locomotory muscles of diving ducks are specialized for sustaining high rates of aerobic metabolism, emphasizing the importance of body O2 stores for dive performance in these species.

Exercise Metabolome: Insights for Health and Performance.

Exercise has many benefits for physical and mental well-being. Metabolomics research has allowed scientists to study the impact of exercise on the body by analyzing metabolites released by tissues such as skeletal muscle, bone, and the liver. Endurance training increases mitochondrial content and oxidative enzymes, while resistance training increases muscle fiber and glycolytic enzymes. Acute endurance exercise affects amino acid metabolism, fat metabolism, cellular energy metabolism, and cofactor and vitamin metabolism. Subacute endurance exercise alters amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism, and nucleotide metabolism. Chronic endurance exercise improves lipid metabolism and changes amino acid metabolism. Acute resistance exercise changes several metabolic pathways, including anaerobic processes and muscular strength. Chronic resistance exercise affects metabolic pathways, resulting in skeletal muscle adaptations. Combined endurance-resistance exercise alters lipid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and amino acid metabolism, increasing anaerobic metabolic capacity and fatigue resistance. Studying exercise-induced metabolites is a growing field, and further research can uncover the underlying metabolic mechanisms and help tailor exercise programs for optimal health and performance.

Aerobic scope falls to nil at Pcrit and anaerobic ATP production increases below Pcrit in the tidepool sculpin, Oligocottus maculosus.

The critical oxygen tension of whole-animal oxygen uptake rate, or Pcrit, has historically been defined as the oxygen partial pressure (PO2) at which aerobic scope falls to zero and further declines in PO2 require substrate-level phosphorylation to meet shortfalls in aerobic ATP production, thereby time-limiting survival. Despite the inclusion of aerobic scope and anaerobic ATP production in the definition, little effort has been made to verify that Pcrit measurements, the vast majority of which are obtained using respirometry in resting animals, actually reflect the predictions of zero aerobic scope and a transition to increasing reliance on anaerobic ATP production. To test these predictions, we compared aerobic scope and levels of whole-body lactate at oxygen partial pressures (PO2s) bracketing Pcrit obtained in resting fish during progressive hypoxia in the tidepool sculpin, Oligocottus maculosus. We found that aerobic scope falls to zero at Pcrit and, in resting fish exposed to PO2s < Pcrit, whole-body lactate accumulated pointing to an increased reliance on anaerobic ATP production. These results support the interpretation of Pcrit as a key oxygen threshold at which aerobic scope falls to nil and, below Pcrit, survival is time-limited based on anaerobic metabolic capacity.

The influence of sports tourism on the indicators of the cardiovascular system and coordination among students aged 16-18

The article deals with the processes of the work of the heart muscle and active muscles of the body of students aged 16-18 under the influence of cycling tourism. The purpose. To determine changes in the cardiovascular system and coordination of movements of 16-18 years old after the planned physical activity. Result. The data of 16-18 year old students on changes in diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, aerobic and anaerobic metabolic capacities, PWC170 test (p&lt;0,05-0,001) are presented. Coordination capabilities in terms of walking on an 8-meter bench, the difference between running 15 m and slalom running 15 m, shuttle running, statistical balance with eyes closed, standing on the bike did not change (p&gt;0,05). This suggests that there is a need in training to pay more attention to exercises for the development of coordination of movements.

Purpose: to determine the functioning of the cardiovascular and reproductive system of cyclists and wrestlers 15-16 years under the influence of specific physical activity. Material and methods. 14 athletes took part in the research, 7 of them were freestyle wrestling (3 – I category, 4 – candidates for master of sports) and 7 – Mountain Bike (MTO) races (4 – I category, 3 – candidates for master of sports). Research methods: theoretical analysis and generalization of scientific and methodological literature, pedagogical and biomedical research methods, methods of mathematical statistics. Results: the analysis of educational programs (freestyle wrestling, cycling-MTV) of the age group of 15-16 years showed that in these kinds of sports a different mode of educational and training work during the annual cycle. So, for freestyle wrestling athletes in the age group 15-16 years old, special physical training is planned for 100 hours, psychological training for 20 hours, competitive training for 42 hours, for 70 hours – rehabilitation means for 6 hours – medical control, while female cyclists – MTB is 12 hours more than general physical training, 144 hours more – technical and tactical. After the training year, the analysis of the trainers' plans showed that in freestyle wrestling, the percentage of general physical training has changed and amounted to 16 %, special physical – 24 %, technical and tactical – 33 %, psychological – 4 %, while in cycling general physical training – 19 %, special physical – 25 %, technical and tactical – 34 %, psychological – 6 %. Special and technical-tactical work by 1 % and psychological work by 2 % more were performed by cyclists relative to wrestlers. Comparison of the indicators of the cardiovascular system of female athletes showed a statistical difference in systolic blood pressure (t=3,60; t=8,92; p&lt;0,001), in diastolic blood pressure (t=3,56; t=6,00, p&lt;0,001), in the aerobic metabolic capacity (t=5,08; t=7,07; p&lt;0,001), in the anaerobic metabolic capacity (t=12,20; t=8,14; p&lt;0,001). According to a survey of female athletes, it was determined that in September 2019, 33 % of athletes 15-16 years old had irregular menstruation and 67% – regular, in December 2019 4 3% – irregular and 57 % – regular, in May 2020 50% – irregular and 50 % – regular, in September 2020 57 % – irregular and 43 % – regular menstruation. Conclusions. The analysis of curricula for the chosen sport and training plans of coaches by types of training showed that the specificity of the training process is the specificity of the discipline in which relatively independent types are clearly visible, and the distribution of training and competitive physical loads is interconnected with the stage of training. Comparison of the indicators of the cardiovascular system of female athletes 15-16 years old showed that higher performance in cyclists as a result of training (physiologically athletic heart. At the same time, among wrestlers it was recognized as more optimal indicators of the heart muscle for further improvement of sportsmanship. The negative dynamics of the ovarian cycle at the age of 15-16 years was determined, which amounted to 21 % of irregular menstruation. Wild longnose dace downstream of wastewater treatment plants display an obese phenotype

Wild fish living downstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) often have increased body condition factors or body mass indices compared to upstream fish. This observation has been largely attributed to increased nutrient loading and food availability around wastewater effluent outflows. While a higher condition factor in fish is generally considered a predictor of healthy ecosystems, the metabolic status and capacity of the animals downstream of WWTPs may be a better predictor of fitness and potential population level effects. To address this, we sampled wild longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae), a native species in North American waterways, from sites upstream and downstream of WWTPs. Downstream fish had higher body mass indices, which corresponded with higher nutrient (lipid, protein, and glycogen) storage in somatic tissues compared to upstream fish. Liver transcriptome analysis revealed metabolic reprogramming favoring lipid synthesis, including higher hepatic triglyceride levels and transcript abundance of targeted lipogenic genes. This suggests that effluent exposure-mediated obesity in dace is a result of changes at the transcriptional level. To determine potential ecological consequences, we subjected these fish to an acute stressor in situ to determine their stress performance. Downstream fish failed to mobilize metabolites post-stress, and showed a reduction in liver aerobic and anaerobic metabolic capacity. Taken together, fish living downstream of WWTPs exhibit a greater lipid accumulation that results in metabolic disruption and may compromise the ability of these fish to cope with subsequent environmental and/or anthropogenic stressors.

Effects of Intertidal Position on Metabolism and Behavior in the Acorn Barnacle, Balanus glandula.

The intertidal zone is characterized by persistent, tidally-driven fluctuations in both abiotic (e.g., temperature, oxygen, and salinity) and biotic (e.g., food availability and predation) factors, which make this a physiologically challenging habitat for resident organisms. The relative magnitude and degree of variability of environmental stress differ between intertidal zones, with the most extreme physiological stress often being experienced by organisms in the high intertidal. Given that so many of the constantly shifting parameters in this habitat are primary drivers of metabolic rate (e.g., temperature, [O2], and food availability), we hypothesized that sessile conspecifics residing in different tidal zones would exhibit distinct “metabolic phenotypes,” a term we use to collectively describe the organisms’ baseline metabolic performance and capacity. To investigate this hypothesis, we collected acorn barnacles (Balanus glandula) from low, mid, and high intertidal positions in San Luis Obispo Bay, CA, and measured a suite of biochemical (whole-animal citrate synthase (CS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, and aerial [D-lactate]), physiological (O2 consumption rates), morphological (body size), and behavioral (e.g., cirri beat frequency and percentage of time operculum open) indices of metabolism. We found tidal zone-dependent differences in B. glandula metabolism that primarily related to anaerobic capacity, cirral activity patterns, and body size. Barnacles from the low intertidal tended to have a greater capacity for anaerobic metabolism (i.e., increased LDH activity and increased baseline [D-lactate]), have reduced cirral beating activity—and presumably reduced feeding—when submerged, and be smaller in size compared to conspecifics in the high intertidal. We did not, however, see any D-lactate accumulation in barnacles from any tidal height throughout 96 h of air exposure. This trend indicates that the enhanced capacity of low intertidal barnacles for anaerobic metabolism may have evolved to support metabolism during more prolonged episodes of emersion or during events other than emersion (e.g., coastal hypoxia and predation). There were also no significant differences in CS activity or baseline O2 consumption rates (in air or seawater at 14°C) across tidal heights, which imply that aerobic metabolic capacity may not be as sensitive to tidal position as anaerobic processes. Understanding how individuals occupying different shore heights differ in their metabolic capacity becomes increasingly interesting in the context of global climate change, given that the intertidal zone is predicted to experience even greater extremes in abiotic stress.

Applications of the Critical Power Model to Dynamic Constant External Resistance Exercise: A Brief Review of the Critical Load Test

The study and application of the critical power (CP) concept has spanned many decades. The CP test provides estimates of two distinct parameters, CP and W′, that describe aerobic and anaerobic metabolic capacities, respectively. Various mathematical models have been used to estimate the CP and W′ parameters across exercise modalities. Recently, the CP model has been applied to dynamic constant external resistance (DCER) exercises. The same hyperbolic relationship that has been established across various continuous, whole-body, dynamic movements has also been demonstrated for upper-, lower-, and whole-body DCER exercises. The asymptote of the load versus repetition relationship is defined as the critical load (CL) and the curvature constant is L′. The CL and L′ can be estimated from the same linear and non-linear mathematical models used to derive the CP. The aims of this review are to (1) provide an overview of the CP concept across continuous, dynamic exercise modalities; (2) describe the recent applications of the model to DCER exercise; (3) demonstrate how the mathematical modeling of DCER exercise can be applied to further our understanding of fatigue and individual performance capabilities; and (4) make initial recommendations regarding the methodology for estimating the parameters of the CL test.

1H-NMR metabolomics profiling of zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha): A field-scale monitoring tool in ecotoxicological studies.

Biomonitoring of aquatic environments requires new tools to characterize the effects of pollutants on living organisms. Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) from the same site in north-eastern France were caged for two months, upstream and downstream of three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the international watershed of the Meuse (Charleville-Mézières "CM" in France, Namur "Nam" and Charleroi "Cr" in Belgium). The aim was to test 1H-NMR metabolomics for the assessment of water bodies' quality. The metabolomic approach was combined with a more "classical" one, i.e., the measurement of a range of energy biomarkers: lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lipase, acid phosphatase (ACP) and amylase activities, condition index (CI), total reserves, electron transport system (ETS) activity and cellular energy allocation (CEA). Five of the eight energy biomarkers were significantly impacted (LDH, ACP, lipase, total reserves and ETS), without a clear pattern between sites (Up and Down) and stations (CM, Nam and Cr). The metabolomic approach revealed variations among the three stations, and also between the upstream and downstream of Nam and CM WWTPs. A total of 28 known metabolites was detected, among which four (lactate, glycine, maltose and glutamate) explained the observed metabolome variations between sites and stations, in accordance with chemical exposure levels. Metabolome changes suggest that zebra mussel exposure to field contamination could alter their osmoregulation and anaerobic metabolism capacities. This study reveals that lactate is a potential biomarker of interest, and 1H-NMR metabolomics can be an efficient approach to assess the health status of zebra mussels in the biomonitoring of aquatic environments.

Evidence for auxiliary anaerobic metabolism in obligately aerobic Zetaproteobacteria

Zetaproteobacteria are obligate chemolithoautotrophs that oxidize Fe(II) as an electron and energy source, and play significant roles in nutrient cycling and primary production in the marine biosphere. Zetaproteobacteria thrive under microoxic conditions near oxic-anoxic interfaces, where they catalyze Fe(II) oxidation faster than the abiotic reaction with oxygen. Neutrophilic Fe(II) oxidizing bacteria produce copious amounts of insoluble iron oxyhydroxides as a by-product of their metabolism. Oxygen consumption by aerobic respiration and formation of iron oxyhydroxides at oxic-anoxic interfaces can result in periods of oxygen limitation for bacterial cells. Under laboratory conditions, all Zetaproteobacteria isolates have been shown to strictly require oxygen as an electron acceptor for growth, and anaerobic metabolism has not been observed. However, genomic analyses indicate a range of potential anaerobic pathways present in Zetaproteobacteria. Heterologous expression of proteins from Mariprofundus ferrooxydans PV-1, including pyruvate formate lyase and acetate kinase, further support a capacity for anaerobic metabolism. Here we define auxiliary anaerobic metabolism as a mechanism to provide maintenance energy to cells and suggest that it provides a survival advantage to Zetaproteobacteria in environments with fluctuating oxygen availability.

Physiological responses to heat stress in an invasive mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis depend on tidal habitat

Mussels are ecologically important organisms that can survive in subtidal and intertidal zones where they experience thermal stress. We know little about how mussels from different tidal habitats respond to thermal stress. We used the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis from separate subtidal and intertidal populations to test whether heart rate and indicators of potential aerobic (citrate synthase activity) and anaerobic (cytosolic malate dehydrogenase activity) metabolic capacity are affected by increased temperatures while exposed to air or submerged in water. Subtidal mussels were affected by warming when submerged in water (decreased heart rate) but showed no effect in air. In contrast, intertidal mussels were affected by exposure to air (increased anaerobic capacity) but not by warming. Overall, physiological responses of mussels to thermal stress were dependent on their tidal habitat. These results highlight the importance of considering the natural habitat of mussels when assessing their responses to environmental challenges.

Positive or negative? The shell alters the relationship among behavioral defense strategy, energy metabolic levels and antioxidant capacity in freshwater turtles

BackgroundThe relationships among energy metabolic levels, behavioral and other physiological traits help to determine the trade-off of energy allocation between different traits and the evolution of life-history driven by natural selection. However, these relationships may be distinctive in selected animal taxa because of their unique traits. In the present study, the relationships among energy metabolic levels, behavioral defense strategies, and antioxidant capacity were explored in three freshwater turtle species with different shell morphologies, by assessing responses to attack, righting time, shell morphology, whole-organism metabolic rates, tissue metabolic enzyme activities and antioxidant levels.ResultsThe Chinese three-keeled pond turtles, Chinemys reevesii, showed a passive defense strategy, relatively larger shells, a higher resting metabolic rate (RMR) and higher antioxidant levels compared to the snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina, or the Chinese soft-shelled turtle, Pelodiscus sinensis. These latter two species both showed an active defense strategy, a higher factorial aerobic scope and better muscle anaerobic metabolic capacity but relatively smaller shells, lower RMR and antioxidant capacity.ConclusionOur results indicate a negative relationship between RMR and activity levels in behavioral defense strategies along small-big shell continuum among the three turtle species. We also found a positive relationship between antioxidant capacity and energy metabolism but a negative one between antioxidant capacity and activity levels in defense strategies. The present study indicated a role of turtle shell in forming unique relationship between energy metabolic levels and behaviors in freshwater turtle taxa and a possible trade-off between the maintenance of physiological homeostasis and activity levels in energy allocation.

Isolation, Development, and Genomic Analysis of Bacillus megaterium SR7 for Growth and Metabolite Production Under Supercritical Carbon Dioxide.

Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) is an attractive substitute for conventional organic solvents due to its unique transport and thermodynamic properties, its renewability and labile nature, and its high solubility for compounds such as alcohols, ketones, and aldehydes. However, biological systems that use scCO2 are mainly limited to in vitro processes due to its strong inhibition of cell viability and growth. To solve this problem, we used a bioprospecting approach to isolate a microbial strain with the natural ability to grow while exposed to scCO2. Enrichment culture and serial passaging of deep subsurface fluids from the McElmo Dome scCO2 reservoir in aqueous media under scCO2 headspace enabled the isolation of spore-forming strain Bacillus megaterium SR7. Sequencing and analysis of the complete 5.51 Mbp genome and physiological characterization revealed the capacity for facultative anaerobic metabolism, including fermentative growth on a diverse range of organic substrates. Supplementation of growth medium with L-alanine for chemical induction of spore germination significantly improved growth frequencies and biomass accumulation under scCO2 headspace. Detection of endogenous fermentative compounds in cultures grown under scCO2 represents the first observation of bioproduct generation and accumulation under this condition. Culturing development and metabolic characterization of B. megaterium SR7 represent initial advancements in the effort toward enabling exploitation of scCO2 as a sustainable solvent for in vivo bioprocessing.

Individual variation in metabolism and thermal tolerance in juvenile qingbo (Spinibarbus sinensis)

Studies of individual variation in the physiological performance of animals and their relationship with metabolism may provide insight into how selection influences diversity in phenotypic traits. Thus, the aims of the present study were to investigate variation in thermal tolerance and its relationship with individual metabolism in juvenile qingbo (Spinibarbus sinensis). To fulfill our goal, we first measured the resting metabolic rate (RMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR), metabolic scope (MS, MMR–RMR) and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) of 40 fish at 25 °C. We then measured the critical thermal minimum (CTmin), lethal thermal minimum (LTmin), critical thermal maximum (CTmax), and lethal thermal maximum (LTmax) of 20 fish. Both MMR and MS were positively correlated with the metabolic recovery rate (MRR) (p = 0.001), indicating that high aerobic metabolic performance individuals possessed an advantage for the recovery of anaerobic metabolism. However, the negative correlation between EPOC and MRR (p = 0.017) indicated a slow recovery of the metabolism of high anaerobic metabolic capacity individuals. The RMR was positively correlated with CTmin and LTmin, whereas all of the metabolic rate parameters (RMR, MMR, and MS) were negatively correlated with CTmax and LTmax (p < 0.05), indicating that high aerobic metabolic performance individuals have a weakened thermal tolerance. These results suggested that there is a trade-off between aerobic metabolic performance and thermal tolerance.

Before the beginning of the training sessions, the subjects registered a set of indicators that allowed assessing the functional state of the organism (cardiovascular, respiratory and neuromuscular systems). Repeatedly recorded the studied indicators for the same complex after the end of training sessions after 1 hour, as well as after 24, 48 and 72 hours. Results: the young racing skier based on the results of the conducted studies analyzed the dynamics of indicators of the functional state of the organism. The timing of restoration of the cardiovascular, respiratory and neuromuscular systems has been established, which must be taken into account when planning the training process in microcycles. Conclusion: as a result of studies on the effect of heavy loads using the movement on skiing rollers, a decrease in the functional parameters of the cardiovascular, respiratory, neuromuscular systems of the body was established. The recovery period as a whole lasted for 72 hours. At the same time, it was revealed that the anaerobic metabolic capacity was restored after 48 hours.

Effects of Embryonic Exposure to Salinity Stress or Hypoxia on Post-metamorphic Growth and Survival of the Polychaete Capitella teleta.

Although a good number of studies have investigated the impact of larval experience on aspects of post-metamorphic performance, only a few have considered the potential impact of stresses experienced by brooded embryos. In this study we separately investigated the impact of salinity stress (as low as 10) and hypoxia (1 ml O2 l-1) experienced by brooded embryos of the deposit-feeding polychaete Capitella teleta on hatching success, metamorphosis, post-metamorphic survival, and post-metamorphic growth. Salinity reduction from 30 to 10 or 15 reduced relative hatching success, presumably by reducing embryonic survival, but generally had no negative latent effects on juvenile survival or growth. Prolonged exposure to hypoxic conditions had no negative effects, as seen on measurements recorded, other than abandonment of brood tubes by some females. There were no negative effects on days to emergence from brood tubes, numbers of larvae emerging from brood tubes, juvenile survival, or juvenile growth. Future studies should consider the potential role of maternal behavior in protecting embryos from at least short-term exposures to hypoxia, and the capacity for anaerobic metabolism in both embryos and adults of this species.

Vulnerability of individual fish to capture by trawling is influenced by capacity for anaerobic metabolism.

The harvest of animals by humans may constitute one of the strongest evolutionary forces affecting wild populations. Vulnerability to harvest varies among individuals within species according to behavioural phenotypes, but we lack fundamental information regarding the physiological mechanisms underlying harvest-induced selection. It is unknown, for example, what physiological traits make some individual fish more susceptible to capture by commercial fisheries. Active fishing methods such as trawling pursue fish during harvest attempts, causing fish to use both aerobic steady-state swimming and anaerobic burst-type swimming to evade capture. Using simulated trawling procedures with schools of wild minnows Phoxinus phoxinus, we investigate two key questions to the study of fisheries-induced evolution that have been impossible to address using large-scale trawls: (i) are some individuals within a fish shoal consistently more susceptible to capture by trawling than others?; and (ii) if so, is this related to individual differences in swimming performance and metabolism? Results provide the first evidence of repeatable variation in susceptibility to trawling that is strongly related to anaerobic capacity and swimming ability. Maximum aerobic swim speed was also negatively correlated with vulnerability to trawling. Standard metabolic rate was highest among fish that were least vulnerable to trawling, but this relationship probably arose through correlations with anaerobic capacity. These results indicate that vulnerability to trawling is linked to anaerobic swimming performance and metabolic demand, drawing parallels with factors influencing susceptibility to natural predators. Selection on these traits by fisheries could induce shifts in the fundamental physiological makeup and function of descendent populations.
