Statistical and Age Studies of Glyoxalase I in the British Columbian Population

ABSTRACTThe distribution of the three GLO phenotypes was examined and age studies were conducted. A total of 357 liquid blood samples were obtained from the Canadian Red Cross in Vancouver, B.C. Bloodstains were made from these samples and stored at 22 degrees C., 4 degrees C., and—13 degrees C. These were retyped at various weekly intervals to determine the age at which banding patterns could still be interpreted.

Surgical Management of Juvenile Chronic Polyarthritis

With this book, the editors and their eight contributors present the lessons of 30 years' experience in the surgical treatment of chronic polyarthritis in children at the Canadian Red Cross Hospital, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, England. The intention of the book is to present the methods and results from one distinguished institution, not to provide a comprehensive review and comparative study of all methods of surgical treatment of these conditions. The credentials of both well-known editors make this an undertaking very much worth doing, and only the question How well have they done it? remains. The text is technically and appropriately well illustrated and the references at the end of each chapter provide a good bibliography for the reader with further interest in the specific topics. Optimizing recovery of platelets in platelet rich plasma by the simplex strategy.

A Simplex is an empirical, geometric feedback strategy which progressively programs a series of experiments according to the results of the preceeding experiments. It leads to definition of conditions which maximize or minimize the result of experiments in two or more variables. When applied to study a laboratory method it dictates simultaneous variation of the conditions of an experiment, differing from the usual approach in which variables are altered sequentially and arbitrarily. A two variable Simplex (force and duration of centrifugation) has been applied to maximize platelet recovery in platelet rich plasma (PRP). The technique of Simplex is described. Maximal recovery of platelets in PRP was reached by centrifugation at 2160 X g for 2.7 minutes. To confirm the correctness of this result, platelet concentrates were prepared from PRP's separated by three different methods: 1) conditions determined by Simplex, 2) American National Red Cross recommended method (2820 X g for two minutes), and 3) Canadian Red Cross recommended method (995 X g for nine minutes). Mean recovery of 78 per cent was obtained by Simplex, significantly higher than 61 per cent with the American National Red Cross method (p greater than .005) and higher than 69 per cent with the Canadian Red Cross method. Simplex strategy is recommended as a simple, powerful technique for determining optimal experimental or laboratory conditions.

The Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service

This year the Canadian Red Cross Society commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the birth of its national blood transfusion service.It was in February, 1947 when the first Red Cross Depot was opened in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was the prototype of 16 similar depots that would be established throughout Canada in the next 15 years. The Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service became truly national in scope with the opening of a depot in Quebec City in 1961.

Emergency Blood Services

Abstract The prime and essential function of any emergency blood service is to provide ample supplies of blood and blood derivatives to the medical services operating in the post-nuclear disaster period with as much despatch and precision as possible. To meet these needs, a plan has been devised in Canada whereby 600,000 units of whole blood may become available for the treatment of an estimated 200,000 living casualties in the two- to three-week period immediately following a national disaster. The disaster organization is based upon the existing Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service which is currently providing blood and blood fractions to all hospitals, coast to coast, through its 16 depots. The key to the emergency operation is the establishment of shadow depots in preselected sites 50 to 75 miles from the existing depots and in places free of fallout. Stockpiling of essential blood transfusion supplies and equipment, along with a peace-time training program of essential personnel, is a prerequisite for the success of the plan.

The lipide composition during storage of human plasma, pooled, irradiated, and dried.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the total lipide, neutral fat, total fatty acid, total cholesterol, ester cholesterol, free cholesterol, and phospholipide content, estimated by oxidative micromethods, of human plasma, pooled, irradiated, and dried, as collected by the Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service and processed at the Connaught Medical Research Laboratories. Determinations were made before and after storage as dried plasma for six months in the dark at temperatures of −40° C., 4° C., 20° C., and 40° C. All lipides present in this dry powdered plasma were found to be completely taken up in the distilled water used for its reconstitution to liquid plasma. The reconstituted liquid plasma contained approximately one-half the concentration of lipides present in fresh normal human plasma, the difference being due entirely to dilution during preparation and processing, except in the instances of both free and esterified cholesterol, of which approximately one-fifth the amount present in fresh normal human plasma was found to be missing in the final product. No statistically significant loss of lipides in dried plasma occurred after storage at −40° C., 4° C., or 20° C.; at 40° C. there was a statistically significant loss of approximately one-fifth of practically all lipides. Ultraviolet irradiation during processing did not affect the lipide composition of dried plasma determined before and after storage at 4° C.
