“You’re a Mature Student and You’re a Tiny, Tiny Little Fish in a Big Massive Pond of Students”: A Thematic Analysis Investigating the Institutional Support Needs of Partnered Mature Students in Postsecondary Study

Mature students in postsecondary education—those over 25 years of age, also known as nontraditional students or adult learners—make up a significant minority population on Canadian postsecondary campuses. Despite academic performance that tends to be higher than that of traditional students, the retention of mature students is lower due to the stressors they face in their home and school roles. This paper examines the insights of mature students and their intimate partners on how higher education institutions can provide better supports to make postsecondary programs and campuses more accessible to adult learners and enable their success. A sample of 25 mature postsecondary students enrolled in Canadian higher education institutions and their partners participated in dyadic interviews that explored the connections between their relationship and school experiences. A data-driven, inductive thematic analysis of the transcribed interviews found three themes that focused on the institutional support needs of partnered mature students, highlighting the need to (1) increase institutional knowledge and awareness of mature students’ needs, (2) offer flexible study options to complete courses and program requirements, and (3) provide relevant supports and programs. Mature students felt marginalized at their institutions related to the programs, instructors, staff, resources, and supports that are strongly focused on traditional-aged and circumstanced students. Recommendations are provided for higher education institutions to provide resources and supports that meet mature students’ unique needs to both access and be successful in their pursuit of postsecondary education.

Black affirming pedagogy: Reflections on the premises, challenges and possibilities of mainstreaming antiracist black pedagogy in Canadian sociology.

Antiblackness, anti-Black racism and other oppressions work within systems such as capitalism, white supremacy and globalization. As a system, Canadian higher education institutions are complicit with the oppression of Black, Indigenous and racialized peoples. Anti-oppressive and antiracist pedagogies attempt to challenge institutional power and oppression but face resistance within the academy and wider society. This paper articulates Black Affirming Pedagogy as an additional anticolonial, antiracist, pro-Black teaching praxis aimed at furthering educators' resiliencies and capacities for cultivating transformations and social change. Pro-Black affirmations of Blackness, allyship/solidarity, humanity, diverse knowledge, and action are discussed alongside strategies for praxis. Risks of engaging in Black Affirming Pedagogy and suggestions for overcoming them are also highlighted.

Entrepreneurship Studies in Higher Education: A Bibliometric Analysis from Canada

The purpose of this paper is to identify broad themes that are pertinent to the study of Entrepreneurship in Canadian higher education institutions. 51 peer-reviewed papers formed the theoretical corpus of our qualitative analysis. We employed co-occurrence of keywords to identify research themes that appeared in our theoretical corpus. Keywords that occur together most frequently across the corpus were extracted and grouped into clusters. Each of these clusters represents a theme common to the keywords it encompasses. We used VOSViewer 1.6.10 for our analysis. The five themes extracted from the theoretical corpus are: Integration with business education; Adopting global approach; Academic research in entrepreneurship; Robust education policy; Educational innovation. We discussed the implications for entrepreneurship education.

Problematizing Access to Higher Education for Refugee and Globally Displaced Students: What’s the Problem Represented to Be in Canadian University Responses to Syrian, Afghan and Ukrainian Crises?

The UNHCR’s 15by30 campaign to increase refugee student enrolment in higher education to 15% by 2030 is a lofty goal. Canadian higher education institutions have a role to play in contributing to this policy goal, along with advocacy efforts from refugee student groups, community-based organizations, government, and international organizations. The aim of this study is to look critically at how the issue of access to higher education for refugee and globally displaced people is represented through Ontario’s universities’ responses to federal government initiatives to crises in Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine. In this study, we use Bacchi’s (2009) “What’s the problem represented to be?” approach to policy analysis and, drawing on Dillabough’s (2022) critique of modernity in higher education, we argue that university responses related to refugee and globally displaced student access to higher education offer the possibility to reflect on the paradoxical tensions of the problem space in Canadian higher education. In our findings, we discuss how the problem of refugee and displacement crisis was represented differently in response to differences in geopolitical conditions and government policies, as we demonstrate how representations of material problems and categories of “citizenship” and “geographical location” in the universities’ responses contributed to creating boundaries of inclusion and exclusion for access. Finally, we show how the creation of educational programs for “globally displaced people” during the period related to the Ukrainian crisis perpetuates the logic of colonialism in the universities’ responses.

State of post-secondary food studies pedagogy in Canada

To date, there has been little empirical research on how food studies pedagogy has developed in Canada. Yet, across Canada, more and more postsecondary institutions are offering food studies in formalized programs and individual courses to undergraduate students. This paper contributes to the literature on food studies pedagogy by gathering insights from interviews with key faculty in food studies undergraduate programs at Canadian higher education institutions, and other food studies scholars in Canada. The purpose of this empirical research is to provide clarity regarding the ways that food studies programs are conceptualized and taught to better understand the evolution and future course of food studies pedagogy. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken to explore the normative commitments and philosophical underpinnings of food studies programs; various ways that scholars scope food studies; and challenges faced by food studies programs. We found that food studies programs in higher education in Canada and their associated pedagogy do not have a set of fixed attributes, but they do share common threads. Transformation is a defining characteristic of food studies and its pedagogy and puts critical thinking at the core of how food studies are taught in Canada at the undergraduate level. Interviewees also emphasized the importance of moving beyond critique towards solutions in their teaching to facilitate a transition towards more socially and ecologically just food systems.

Delayed PhD completion: an autoethnographic account of academic ableism

ABSTRACT Although equity, diversity, and inclusion have become increasingly important to Canadian higher education institutions, research on experiences of disability in post-secondary institutions is limited. What’s more, the perspectives of disabilities from non-disabled academics far exceed that of those with disabilities. In the existing literature, disabled faculty and graduate students have outlined their experiences with academic ableism and the various barriers it has caused them. Applying a disability rights perspective, I use autoethnography to outline the ways academic ableism has manifested in my PhD program. More specifically, I develop a narrative that considers the relationship(s) that exist between dis/ability and chronic pain on one hand, and the ableist notion of “time to completion” on the other.

International Recruitment in Canadian Higher Education: Factors Influencing Students’ Perceptions and Experiences with Education Agents

Education agents, also known as college counsellors or third-party recruiters, have been used extensively by Canadian higher education institutions (HEIs) to recruit international students. Unfortunately, little research to date has focused on international students in Canadian HEIs regarding agent practices. This study investigated Canada-bound international students’ perceptions of and experiences with education agents. A survey consisting of two scales was used to gather data. A total of 385 participants representing 59 countries responded to the survey. Findings revealed that nearly half of the participants used education agents during their application, but their general perceptions of and specific experiences with agents were less than satisfactory. This study also identified a few characteristics of international students that might help Canadian HEIs improve the efficiency of their recruitment practices and policies.

INSIGHTS INTO TECHNICAL TRANSLATION COURSE DESIGN

This article offers theoretical and pragmatic insights into the nature of technical translation course design. In so doing, I first provide a definition of specialized translation based on a survey of the literature in this field, conducted collaboratively with a research assistant. Then, I present a comparative table sourcing how technical translation has been taught, as a university course, across Canadian higher education institutions. Following this, I offer a rationale for student-oriented ways of teaching this course, all the while giving concrete steps to co-explore novel topics with undergraduate and graduate students. Finally, I generate a series of considerations and questions for further inquiry into the instruction of technical translation in Canada and worldwide. The article presents an analysis of the system of professional training of future translators in Canadian universities at Master’s degree level. It has been studied that Canadian higher education institutions that train future Masters of Translation are characterized by two types of programs: sectoral and genre. It has been determined that sectoral programs comprise Master’s programs of training interpreters, translators and terminologists. Genre specialization involves the choice of program in the following fields: commercial translation, medical translation, economic translation, literary translation, court translation, legal translation. The basic principles of training programs for future masters of translation have been generalized (professional orientation, flexibility and variability, free choice of academic disciplines, dominance of practical training, compliance with the requirements of the profession and the labor market). Methods, forms and means of teaching of future Masters of Translation have been analyzed. The types and features of the organization of practice have been investigated. The system of monitoring the quality assurance of educational services, namely the certification and accreditation of educational programs and their criteria has been studied. A comparative analysis of the systems of training future Masters of Translation in the universities of Canada and Ukraine has been conducted. According to the analysis their differences have been highlighted and the progressive ideas of the foreign experience have been proposed to be implemented in Ukrainian higher education. The results of the study have been summarized in the form of a system that contains goal, content, procedural and monitoring components. Funding. Internationalization in Canadian Higher Education Institutions: Ontario

Education is a tool for collaboration among nations. The emergence of concepts as internationalization of educational policies, students-staff exchange programs, internationalization of curriculum, internationalization at home (IAH) or even the emergence of multinational agencies to expedite global exchanges in the realm of Higher Education lead educational policy-makers to confess that segregation of the educational policies from nations’ foreign affairs policies have no promising results than failure of the nations’ educational goals and priorities. Based on the qualitative and case study research methodologies, we adopted critical policy analysis (CPA) to address the question of “why does a Canadian public university engage in internationalization?”. The study showed that the decision to acknowledge internationalization as a priority at a public university in Ontario is based upon different motives ranging from commercial-economic and socio-political to academic-educational and profile-building components. The study also identified the gradual extension of market-based rationales that have historically been absent from traditional university policies in the Canadian context to educational initiatives and academic rationales.

Exploring Critical Thinking as an Outcome for Students Enrolled in Community Colleges

Objective: Using data from HEIghten® Critical Thinking, a student learning outcomes assessment, the purpose of this study was to evaluate what variables are associated with higher critical thinking performance for students enrolled in various community college programs and to evaluate performance differences across demographic and college-level subgroups as well as student perceptions. Method: With data from 1,307 students enrolled across 34 U.S. and Canadian higher education institutions (72% enrolled in 2-year institutions), we utilized a hierarchical regression to identify variables associated with critical thinking performance. Critical thinking performance differences were evaluated using analyses of variance (ANOVAs) and t-tests across student demographic and college experience subgroups and across student perceptions. Results: Results of this study showed (a) consistent significant predictors associated with higher critical thinking performance; (b) a positive relationship between critical thinking performance and the frequency of using critical thinking in college courses; (c) significant, but relatively small performance differences across demographic and college experience subgroups; and (d) positive relationships between student perceptions and critical thinking performance. Conclusion: This study added to the limited literature evaluating critical thinking skills for community college students. Overall, results suggest that institutions should focus attention to the frequency at which students are using critical thinking throughout their courses, which could increase student performance in this particular area, especially if critical thinking is an explicit outcome within the course. Results also suggested the need to emphasize critical thinking skills more across various community college programs and across non-STEM-focused programs. Suggestions for future research are discussed.

Funding Social Innovation in Canada: A Conversation with Stephen Huddart and Chad Lubelsky of the McConnell Foundation

Co-editor of this issue David Peacock interviews Stephen Huddart (President and CEO) and Chad Lubelsky (Program Director) of the McConnell Foundation, a historic supporter of postsecondary education across Canada. McConnell’s investments in community service-learning, social entrepreneurial and innovation activities and social infrastructure programs and dialogues have made them a significant partner for many Canadian higher education institutions. Yet not all community-campus engagement scholars and practitioners, and Engaged Scholar readers, may have heard McConnell articulate for itself its aims and goals for Canadian higher education and society. This interview canvasses the scope of McConnell’s work and interests in community-campus engagement, and sheds light on the actions of an influential private actor in the postsecondary sector.

Access Copyright and Fair Dealing Guidelines in Higher Educational Institutions in Canada: A Survey

Information about the acceptance by Canadian Higher Education Institutions (HEI) of the Access Copyright (AC) tariff is important for educators even though only a minority of HEIs in Canada have committed to the AC tariff. In addition, the copyright “pentalogy,” the five major decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC), and its interpretation of fair dealing has become relevant for the institutions, faculty and students. Many universities and community colleges in Canada have adopted the Universities Canada (UC) guidelines on fair dealing, while some have adopted the “six-point test” as their guideline. In some cases, institutions have not adopted any policy or guidelines on any aspect of copyright. This paper will investigate these issues to provide one view of the behaviour Canadian HEIs exhibit in their adherence to AC and their use of policy and guidelines at their institutions.

Academic Advisors and Their Diverse Advisees: Towards More Ethical Global Universities

In this comparative content analysis, job postings for academic advising personnel from U.S. and Canadian higher education institutions were examined to ascertain expectations for job candidates in terms of skills and duties, educational requirements, and compensation. Fifty-three job descriptions from 18 research-intensive, public universities were collected for this study. The findings show that institutions expect academic advisors to be multitalented and skilled professionals, but that calls for experience working with international students are limited, despite the rising importance of internationalization in higher education.

Organizational and Content Peculiarities of English Teachers’ Professional Training in Canada

AbstractThe article deals with studying organizational and content peculiarities of English teachers’ professional training in Canada. It has been found out that professional training of English teachers, in particular, is provided in many Canadian higher education institutions, namely, universities, university colleges, community colleges and CEGEP colleges. Students are offered the curricula ensuring their high mobility as they may define specificity, a mode and a level of study according to their educational needs and interests. It has been concluded that the content of philological training is a process coordinating the content according to its components, namely, theoretical, empirical and practical knowledge and skills form the block system of interrelated elements. It has been defined that main theoretical and methodical principles for structuring curricula and syllabi for English teachers’ professional training in Canada are multiculturalism; combination, concordance and rational correspondence of theory and practice; pedagogical ideas of equal opportunities, respect for cultures, identity and unity of learning and socialization; consistency and succession; collegiality, partnership, transparency and a dialogue of cultures. It has been specified that programme specifications for English teachers’ training are based on such directions of pedagogical activity as developing students’ interest and respect for cultures of the nations of the world, understanding their general and specific values, comprehending the essence of global events and their consequences, accepting different views on them. As a result, future English teachers obtain the abilities and skills that will ensure their effective activity in multicultural environment as well as learn how to solve the issues associated with adaptation, integration and learning of children from different ethnic groups.

Regulating research learning spaces : an ethical-juridical perspective from South African and Canadian contexts

This article explores the need for formal regulations within South African and Canadian higher education institutions' (HEIs) research assistantships in which postgraduate students acquire research knowledge and skills under the supervision of project leaders. While the relationship between research assistants and project leaders is similar to those in other workplaces, the educational and developmental aspects of research assistantships create a unique type of employment relationship that often is predicated on informal practices and subjective perceptions rather than on labour law or ethical standards. The absence of formal regulations, such as a code of professional and ethical conduct specific to research assistantships, therefore, may expose research members to unnecessary challenges. The goal of the article is to address the dearth of literature on legal and ethical standards related to the employment of postgraduate student research assistants and to draw attention to the benefits of formal regulations within research assistantships as research learning spaces.

Accounting Research by Canadian Higher Education Institutions: A Retrospective Assessment

This study examines the accounting research among Canadian higher education institutions over the last two decades (1991-2010). Overall, thirty-eight Canadian universities contribute 4.1% of all publications in 28 leading accounting journals. The five most productive universities are the University of Alberta, the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia, the University of Waterloo, and Simon Fraser University. Compared with their counterparts in Australia and the U.K., leading Canadian universities are not as productive concerning overall publication in accounting journals. However, when examining only the top six premium accounting journals, leading Canadian universities clearly outperform their counterparts in Australia and the U.K.

Understanding Academic Misconduct

Research suggests that the majority of U.S. undergraduate students have engaged in some form of misconduct while completing their academic work, despite knowing that such behaviour is ethically or morally wrong. U.S.-based studies have also identified myriad personal and institutional factors associated with academic misconduct. Implicit in some of these factors are several institutional strategies that may be implemented to support academic integrity: revisiting the values and goals of higher education, recommitting to quality in teaching and assessment practice, establishing effective policies and invigilation practices, providing educational opportunities and support for all members of the university community, and using (modified) academic honour codes. There is a dearth of similar research in Canada despite growing recognition that academic misconduct is a problem on Canadian campuses. This paper suggests that Canadian higher education can learn much from the U.S. experience and calls for both a recommitment to academic integrity and research on academic misconduct in Canadian higher education institutions.
