Assessing the awareness level, knowledge, and attitudes of the university community for sustainable development in Higher Educational Institutions in India—A review paper

Background: Sustainability plays a crucial role in the development of the education sector. It is analyzed that higher education institutions (HEIs) continuously working on the adoption of sustainable practices for carrying out business operations in the long run. Agenda 2030 is a comprehensive, multifaceted strategy that serve as an important framework for the comparison to uphold different principles. Additionally, the UN 2030 Agenda concerning sustainable development is introduced as global idea of balanced development. The 2030 Agenda and SDGs representing the program related to global development programs. Higher education institutions also working on the adoption of sustainable development perspective and the issues linked with them. Aim: The main aim of the study is to determine the level of knowledge, awareness, and attitude of the university community for achieving sustainability in HEIs. Policy Implementation: Adopting sustainable behavior is encouraged when policies are implemented well. Universities have the authority to develop and implement sustainability policies that set guidelines and requirements. Topics like waste reduction, environmentally friendly transportation, and environmentally friendly buying may be covered by the sustainability policies. Acting sustainably is encouraged among university community members through the implementation of sustainability policies. Conclusion: Findings stated efforts across sectors for the promotion of awareness and alignment with the 2030 Agenda consider a comprehensive strategy for addressing humanity, nature, and human rights. In higher education institutions, the role of education emerges as pivotal, developing green practices, development of campuses, and attracting students globally. In HEIs green practices are carried out for the development of the campus and activities in the future terms. Universities also supported in the adoption of sustainability in working education institutes international students are also attracted to them. It is identified that educators are playing an important role in achieving sustainability aspects in the education sector.

Toward a Vision of Sustainable University: Linkages between Commitment and Practices

Sustainability management plays a significant role in higher education. Development of a sustainable university involves integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations into various aspects of its operations, including campus infrastructure, curriculum, research, and community engagement. This urgently requires a strong commitment as a driving force behind sustainable initiatives, guiding actions, decisions, and investments toward achieving sustainability goals. IPB University as one of the most prominent universities in Indonesia is not only committed to becoming a sustainable university but also consistent in developing strategic plans to pursue its vision. Guided by this vision, IPB University has specifically established the Sustainable Campus Development Office (SCDO) to devise comprehensive sustainability plans outlining its goals, targets, and strategies for reducing environmental impact, promoting social equity, and ensuring economic viability. While it is still on progress, this commitment has played a significant role in encouraging sustainability practices at the university. It provides a foundation for leadership, governance, resources allocation, curriculum integration, student engagement, community partnerships, monitoring, reporting, and continuous improvement toward achieving sustainability goals. In addition, the university has established several sustainability values as guidance and indicators for maintaining sustainable practices. Integrating values and commitment is thus critical to realizing sustainable practices from generation to generation.

University campuses’ location-allocation: a case study of Egypt with insights from the Japanese context

PurposeThis paper aims to identify the most suitable location for a university campus in Egypt based on governorates’ social needs by employing the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The paper, then, reflects the findings retrieved from the Egyptian context on the Japanese context to reveal how different countries deal with the location-allocation decision problem for university campuses.Design/methodology/approachThe AHP is employed to evaluate and rank Egyptian governorates based on 13 distinct criteria obtained from governmental open-source databases. These criteria measure the social needs of each governorate, guiding the decision on the location of new university campuses.FindingsThe results expose a disparity between Egypt's current campus development plan and recommendations derived from AHP analysis. The location-allocation decision for new university campuses appears to be influenced by subjective assessments, indicating a gap between planned developments and identified social needs. Additionally, contextual social and cultural differences between developing and developed countries impact the identification and fulfilment of the demand for a new university campus.Originality/valueThis paper contributes by offering decision-makers a robust location-allocation framework. It serves as a valuable tool for policy formulation in establishing new public universities in both developing and developed countries. Comparative analysis with the Japanese context enriches the understanding of how countries address the location-allocation decision problem for university campuses, emphasising the significance of context-specific considerations in such decisions.

Positive perceptions and purchase of sustainable foods is associated with higher diet quality in Australian university students

Purpose This study aims to understand university students' perception and engagement with sustainable food practices and the relationship with diet quality. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional survey assessed Australian university students' sustainable food perceptions and purchasing behaviours, diet quality using the validated Australian Recommended Food Score and attitudes towards on campus sustainable food options. Findings Of respondents (n = 197; 63% female), over half (58%) perceived it was important to purchase sustainable foods. These students were eight times more likely report purchasing sustainable foods (OR: 8.1; 95%CI 4.2–15.7; SE: 0.3; p < 0.001) and had significantly higher diet quality (Beta coefficient: 2.9; 95% Confidence Intervals 0.4–5.4; Standard Error: 1.3; p = 0.024). Students who reported frequently purchasing all types of sustainable foods, except organic foods, had significantly higher diet quality. Few students perceived there were sufficient sustainable food choices on campus (19%), but most supported the development of an edible campus (80%). Originality/value The results highlight the potential impact of promoting sustainable food options and creating a supportive campus food environment towards improving students’ diet quality.

Methodology for identifying reference architectural and spatial solutions of universities using a graphic matrix

The present study considers architectural and spatial development of the existing universities and campuses as relevant issue. Administrative and academic buildings, libraries, laboratories, student dormitories and sports facilities, medical centers, pedestrian zones, green spaces, parks and sports grounds, green area recreations contribute to strengthening social ties between students and teachers, providing a beneficial effect on learning and development. The present paper analyzes examples of successful development of student campuses and identifies the factors of their effectiveness. The study findings may serve as a foundation for creating architectural and spatial solutions aimed at comprehensive development of a comfortable educational environment in modern universities of the Volga region. Furthermore, the results of the conducted analysis will assist in identifying priorities of architectural development tasks in areas at different levels — from urban planning to the installation of engineering and automation systems. Well-maintained green spaces, convenient areas for relaxation and socialization, as well as a variety of sports and cultural facilities, will contribute to the creation of comfortable and stimulating atmosphere, which, in turn, will enhance students' motivation for learning and develop their social skills. Effective planning, consideration of the needs and preferences of students, and their involvement in the decision-making process are indicated as the key factors for successful architectural and spatial solutions of university campuses. In addition, the maintenance and regular updating of green spaces and campus infrastructure are found significant.

Curating Hybrid-Style University Experiences: Framework Development for Student Social Connectedness Using Interaction Design and Placemaking

Communication technologies offer new opportunities for building and maintaining social connections at university. However, these technologies need to be better understood for their influence on student experiences in hybrid-style classrooms and guided more effectively. This study identified qualities of social connection to understand how students built/maintained social connection. The study was conducted over two autumn semesters in three hybrid-style classes in Switzerland and Norway. Qualitative methods included observations, interviews, and auto-photography. Approximately 150 h of observational data were gained, including auto-photography of 17 students’ physical online learning spaces, and four interviews with class lecturers. The findings indicated that informal/private spaces, crucial for building/maintaining social connection, were hard to access in hybrid-style learning environments. Communication cultures and social structures offered limited support for accessing these spaces for building/maintaining social connection. Addressing this issue required a processual effort across user-levels to support social connection within a hybrid-style university culture. This effort involved opening access to informal/private spaces by applying the concept of affective atmospheres within placemaking and interaction-design theories. A dimensions of affect framework is developed to help curate learning environments towards social connection. For university campus development, addressing these people–place relations with communication technology could foster technology more effectively to support connection.

Green campuses as pivots of sustainable development in Egypt

Abstract Sustainable development is a global aim to which Egypt is highly committed. This is evident in various projects and initiatives that aim to direct all activities towards more sustainable patterns and tools. Egyptian higher education institutions are an important partner and tool in enhancing sustainable development. University campuses, as the main anchors for higher education, take part in achieving this goal through developing green campuses that support the overall national sustainable development. This paper examines the presence of Egyptian universities in the global ranking of Green Campuses. It then focuses on two main case studies within the Egyptian context which are the AUC and ASU to compare their progress and identify their future priorities in Green Campus development.

Optimization of Lecturer Resource Management at the Faculty of Islamic Studies

This study examines Human Resource Management (HRM) practices within the Faculty of Islamic Studies at two universities: Pancabudi Development University and Dharmawangsa University. The research aims to analyze key HRM aspects, including recruitment, selection, competency enhancement, performance management, coaching, and the development of educational staff and faculty members at these institutions. The study adopts a multi-site approach, encompassing both faculties, and utilizes qualitative research methods, specifically a naturalistic interactive approach that involves organic interactions between researchers and participants. The findings reveal that both universities follow general standards for recruitment and selection, such as assessing prior needs and consulting with WR1, although the selection methods varied between institutions. Performance improvement strategies at both universities include participation in various training activities and seminars. Coaching and development efforts at Pancabudi Development University emphasize on-the-job and in-service training, whereas Dharmawangsa University incorporates third-party providers for training initiatives. Moreover, at Pancabudi Development University, the development of educator professionalism is integrated into the broader campus development strategy, while Dharmawangsa University prioritizes ongoing professional development. In conclusion, although the HRM approaches at both universities differ, they are aligned in their overall objectives to enhance HRM and campus development. These findings suggest that institutions implementing well-planned organizational strategies are likely to achieve superior accreditation outcomes.

Sustainable University Campuses: Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Lightscapes in Outdoor Spaces

A lightscape, as a special visual landscape, has unique temporal and spatial characteristics that traditional photometric measurements and descriptions struggle to capture accurately. Despite their significance, there is a lack of in-depth understanding of the on-site perception of lightscapes’ temporal and spatial characteristics, including in outdoor university campus spaces. This study aims to explore the temporal and spatial characteristics of outdoor lightscapes on university campuses and their potential perceptual influencing factors, providing sustainable design, planning, and management suggestions for campus lightscapes. This study was conducted in the Wushan Campus of the South China University of Technology. It employs a “lightwalk” method for on-site perception evaluation, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to investigate the temporal and spatial characteristics of lightscapes in outdoor university campus spaces and the effect of temporal and spatial factors on lightscape perception. The main findings are as follows: (1) Meteorological, architectural, and biophilic lightscape dominate the outdoor campus lightscapes. (2) The temporal and spatial characteristics of the lightscapes are affected by changes in natural light, the transition of light sources from day to night, human activity patterns, and the functional characteristics of the site. (3) The correlation between meteorological and traffic lightscape types and lightscape perception is diminished during the evening periods. This method should be a good way to optimize water and architectural lightscape at night to alleviate discomfort. (4) In green-shaded spaces, the association between meteorological, architectural, and traffic lightscape types and the evaluations of emotional, luminous, and eventful aspects is significantly enhanced, suggesting an increase in such spaces to improve lightscape experience quality. This study advocates that the construction of buildings and environments should be “human-oriented”, paying attention to the scientific foundation that humans perceive the habitat environment through the “five senses”. Research on lightscapes’ temporal and spatial characteristics, exploration of the temporal and spatial modes of lightscape perception, and avoiding energy waste and light pollution are conducive to the design and construction of university campuses in line with the principles of sustainable development. The lightscape optimization strategies derived from this study can not only provide practical guidance for the design and management of campus but also may offer valuable recommendations for planning sustainable campus development.

Research on the Application of Big Data and Cloud Computing Technology in Smart Campus

The current education field is experiencing an innovation driven by big data and cloud technologies, and these advanced technologies play a central role in the construction of smart campuses. Big data technology has a wide range of applications in student learning behavior analysis, teaching resource management, campus safety monitoring, and decision support, which improves the quality of education and management efficiency. Cloud computing technology supports the integration, distribution, and optimal use of educational resources through cloud resource sharing, virtual classrooms, intelligent campus management systems, and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) models, which reduce costs and increase flexibility. This paper comprehensively discusses the practical application of big data and cloud computing technologies in smart campuses, showing how these technologies can contribute to the development of smart campuses, and laying the foundation for the future innovation of education models.

The Design Concept of Integrated Pedestrian Sidewalk with Solar Plants as a Form of Green Campus Development at the Bali Land Transportation Polytechnic

Abstract An important aspect of creating a viable campus environment is providing safe and comfortable walking paths. Proper walking paths give some advantages for students, including improved physical and mental health, transportation efficiency, and increased Student satisfaction and happiness. The pedestrian sidewalk area at Bali Land Transportation Polytechnic (Poltrada Bali) covers 3800 m2, experiencing high pedestrian activity but lacking protective roofing to enhance pedestrian comfort. Based on the pedestrian sidewalk area, a solar power plant as support for the green canopy construction combined with shading vines is possible. The generated electrical energy serves as the power source for the Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (PEVCS) in the campus parking lot as a support for the electric vehicle acceleration program in Bali province. In addition to PEVCS, energy extraction surplus is used as alternative energy for street lighting facilities in the campus area. In this study, the design concept of a shaded pedestrian sidewalk has been carried out, with multiple benefits as solar plants using Delphi as a variable identification and validation tool, and SketchUp software to visualize design shapes aesthetically. The results show that a pedestrian comfort level of 94% was obtained and the maximum power generation of 934,800 Wp, thus it was able to meet the 887,832 W campus operational power reserve needs, street and garden lights of 9,728 W, and the power requirements of two PEVCS units of 22,000 W with a surplus of 15,240 W electric power.

Study on Campus Landscape Micro-Renewal Design under Sustainable Design Theory: The Hainan University Youth Memory Square Renovation Project

With the rise of global sustainable development, sustainable design theory is increasingly applied to landscape design. Campus landscape micro-renewal is closely tied to sustainable design. As important places for teachers and students to work and study, campuses require thoughtful landscape micro-renewal design based on sustainable design theory. This paper uses sustainable design theory to study campus landscape micro-renewal design, focusing on three main aspects: First, it analyzes the policy and industry background of sustainable design theory to clarify the needs for campus landscape renewal. Second, it examines the connotation of sustainable design theory and micro-renewal design theory, elucidating their application methods and strategies in campus landscape micro-renewal. Third, it discusses the practical application of sustainable design theory in campus landscape micro-renewal, proposing design strategies based on specific project conditions. The case study of the Youth Memory Square at Hainan University aims to further promote sustainable campus development and provide design ideas for future campus landscape micro-renewal projects.

ENGAGING CITIZENS’ PARTICIPATION STRATEGIES FOR CREATING RESPONSIVE URBAN LANDSCAPES: A CASE STUDY OF CALEB UNIVERSITY MAIN CAMPUS

Vibrant urban landscapes demand citizen participation. Co-creation, which is a collaborative design approach, empowers residents to shape their environments. This research explores co-creation, highlighting the importance of diverse perspectives for inclusive and sustainable urban landscapes. Using Caleb University as a real-world case study to explore successful co-creation strategies that leverage citizen involvement the research explores citizen experiences with campus development. Employing a qualitative research design, the research delved into the experiences, perceptions, and preferences of staff and students regarding Caleb University's campus development. Data were collected using collection involved a structured questionnaire distributed to a randomly-sampled residents, ensuring representation across all demographics. Findings reveal a generally positive attitude towards participation. The research also highlights the importance of diverse perspectives. Diverse opinions on campus aesthetics highlight the importance of inclusive design. The research emphasizes the resident's preference for green spaces reflects successful co-creation. The research also highlights the desire for multiple avenues of participation, with preferences for campus meetings, workshops, and online forums. Co-creation, free from participation barriers, empowers residents to shape responsive and inclusive urban landscapes, transforming cities into vibrant expressions of their collective vision for a sustainable future. Design and Implementation of an Intelligent Campus Second-hand Trading Platform based on Microservices and Cloud Computing

With the rapid development of smart campuses, traditional campus second-hand trading methods can no longer meet the growing needs of students. This paper proposes a design scheme for an intelligent campus second-hand trading platform based on microservices and cloud computing, which provides customized trading experience for users by introducing advanced recommendation algorithms. The microservice architecture gives the platform extremely high module decoupling and autonomous scalability, ensuring the high availability and agile response of the system. The recommendation system uses a hybrid algorithm, combining content filtering and collaborative filtering, and continuously optimizes the recommendation results through machine learning, so as to accurately capture user preferences. One of the features of the platform is its community-driven data feedback mechanism, which not only can adjust the recommendation strategy in real-time but also can promote the sustainable development of campus economy and culture through data mining. In addition, the research explores a novel credit evaluation system design to establish a trustworthy trading environment. The experimental results show the technical innovation and high efficiency of the platform in multiple dimensions, which is significantly superior to the existing solutions. The successful implementation of this research indicates that the campus trading platform is moving towards a more intelligent and personalized direction, and is expected to play a key role in the smart campus ecosystem.

Offshore campus development and the worlding of Dubai as an international education hub

ABSTRACT This paper investigates how Dubai is materially and semiotically produced as an “international education hub”. As part of developmental strategies to build a knowledge-based economy, Dubai's government mobilizes designated infrastructures and policies to attract numerous foreign universities to open offshore campuses in the city and to offer their programs and degrees. Drawing on scholarship on Dubai's (cultural) political economy and on globalizing cities, I conceptualize the positioning of Dubai as an education hub as a worlding strategy of Dubai's government rooted in a reinterpretation of the city's role in the global knowledge-based economy that emphasizes knowledge production. I analyze Dubai's worlding as an education hub through universities’ offshore campus investment decisions and business strategies, and show how the education hub strategy is closely entwined with Dubai's hitherto economic positionality, and with urban imaginaries of Dubai as a cosmopolitan spectacle and a city for economic opportunity. I contribute to a better understanding of worlding strategies by empirically showing how cities are being positioned and imagined under the knowledge-based economy. The analysis reveals that worlding cities as an education hub is contradictory and does not challenge existing ideas of global city formation, but reproduces and seeks to geographically shift established global hegemonies.

Academic Medicine and Rural Health System Partnerships: Enhancing Education While Advancing Physician Workforce Priorities.

A worsening shortage of rural physicians paralleling increasing health disparities demands attention. Past and ongoing efforts to address this shortage have had positive effects and can inform new strategies to achieve even greater impact. Interventions have included the development of regional medical school campuses and rural-focused tracks to recruit medical students from rural areas, expansion of rural-based graduate medical education (GME) programs and tracks, and use of institutional and individual financial incentives for rural-based training and/or practice. National policy has also taken aim at this challenge with provisions aimed at expanding rural GME in the Medicare, Medicaid, and State Children's Health Insurance Program Balanced Budget Refinement Act of 1999 and the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. Additionally, several states have funded growth in GME, and supportive pathways for Medicare reimbursement and for Veterans Administration funding have been implemented. The authors recommend a new strategy for bolstering the rural physician workforce, focused on using academic-rural partnerships to incorporate rural rotations as a routine part of GME. They explain how the current health care landscape supports this approach and outline additional steps toward implementation. Centralized data collection and analysis are noted as essential to guide future efforts.

Innovative Application and Societal Impact of AI in Student Behavior Early Warning Systems within Smart Campuses

This study explores the innovative application and societal impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in student behavior early warning systems (EWS) within smart campuses. As information technology advances, smart campuses have become integral to modern education, and AI introduces new possibilities for EWS. Through literature review and theoretical analysis, this paper systematically reviews related studies, examining the current applications and potential societal impacts of AI in EWS. The study first defines the basic concepts of smart campuses and AI, followed by an analysis of AI's specific applications in EWS, including behavior data collection, analysis, and anomaly detection. A comprehensive review of existing research reveals that AI enhances the accuracy and timeliness of warnings and provides scientific decision support for educational administrators. However, AI's application also raises data privacy and ethical concerns, necessitating the development of relevant laws and ethical standards. The paper proposes future research directions, including optimizing AI algorithms, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and exploring AI applications in various educational settings. This study aims to provide theoretical support for smart campus development, promote the widespread use of AI in education, and enhance educational equity and quality.

Analysis of International Carbon-Neutrality Campus Cases -A Case Study on Research Universities in the United States-

This study aims to contribute to the spread and promotion of discussions on carbon-neutral campuses by examining cases of carbon-neutral campus development in major research universities in the United States (Harvard, MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley). To achieve this, an analysis was conducted on the carbon emissions status, climate conditions, carbon-neutral campus goals and strategies, emission quantification status, and progress of each university. The background for achieving carbon-neutral campuses at each university was explored, and the possibility of adoption in domestic universities was investigated. The universities effectively reduced greenhouse gases using PPAs and cooperative governance systems to create carbon-neutral campuses. PPAs were funded via government grants, university endowments, and fund creation. Sustainability departments were established, engaging internal and external stakeholders in carbon-neutral planning. In particular, the sustainability offices of each university demonstrate leadership both in reducing carbon and improving overall quality of life by setting goals related to reducing water consumption, promoting health, culture, food, and connecting with local communities. Korean universities face challenges in reducing building emissions, with limited use of mechanisms like PPAs. Thus, Policy backing is vital for procuring renewable energy. Additionally, although some domestic universities have ESG committees or sustainability committees, there are limitations in their roles, authority, and member participation. Thus, for the creation of carbon-neutral campuses and transition to sustainable society, it is imperative to establish relevant governance structures and systemic climate/environmental education, research collaboratively for institution value and talent development.

The Impacts of Visible Green Spaces on the Mental well-being of University Students

The benefits of green spaces on individuals’ health have been widely acknowledged due to their inherent natural qualities. Currently, university students are experiencing significantly higher levels of mental health problems than other social groups. There is a scarcity of studies examining the association between built environment factors and mental health issues among university students, particularly in the Chinese context. University campuses in China are physically isolated, secluded communities, and in this respect, they differ markedly from the spatial organisation patterns of Western universities. Therefore, this study focuses on the correlation between the extent of green space exposure within closed university campuses and the occurrence of mental health issues among resident students. A deep-learning methodology incorporating streetscape images, remote sensing data, and multilevel linear modelling is employed in order to facilitate a comprehensive analysis. The results demonstrate a negative correlation between green space exposure on campus and the level of mental health issues among university students. Individual socio-demographic characteristics, such as whether a person has a partner, are also found to influence the level of mental health issues that they experience. In addition, a significant relationship is found between travel patterns and mental health issues, with students who walked regularly having a lower incidence of mental health issues than those who drove. Our research indicates that, in order to foster healthier communities and enhance social inclusion, urban planners should prioritise the development of greener campuses and urban transport services to improve accessibility to green spaces.
