Gallaudet University Child Development Center's model integration program

Campus child care can provide leadership in demonstrating the kinds of services, professional development, cooperative planning, and interagency agreement essential for successful implementation of the Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments of 1986, P.L. 99-457. The Gallaudet University Child Development Center (CDC) integrates deaf children, and children with other special needs, and demonstrates the use of campus school and academic department resources to provide necessary special services to children, families, and early childhood professionals.

Beyond campus child care: Supporting university families

Child care supportive policies alone have been found to be insufficient in coping with changes in family demographics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As family-related needs increase and broaden, stress has been created on existing structures. At MIT, faculty, students, and staff called for a reexamination of policies, services and benefits bearing on family and work, leading to the establishment in 1988 of a Committee on Family and Work. The Committee's findings vividly reveal the need for a comprehensive approach to meeting the needs of university families at this institution. This report documents the investigative process at MIT to provide a model that may be relevant at other institutions.

Managing the mission: The primary challenge to campus child care

Historically, children's programs on university/college campuses began in the early 1900s with the establishment of parent cooperatives and laboratory schools. In the 1970s children's programs emerged that were dedicated primarily to family service. The purpose of this article is to examine a comprehensive campus child care model as it faces complex issues and challenges in reconceptualizing and/or restructuring to meet the demands of the teaching, research, and service mission of a university/college system. This model is conceptualized as integrative, flexible, responsive to multiple needs, and educationally diverse. It incorporates varying levels of trained personnel and provides for a wide variety of research opportunities.

Integrating research into campus and community early childhood programs

Common problems encountered when research is conducted in campus child care facilities are cited and discussed. In addition, specific guidelines are offered to ensure the successful integration of research into a center's overall program. The modification of campus research policies to meet the unique needs of community centers is also discussed.

Evaluating and improving service-oriented campus child care: A case study

This paper proposes four basic structural forms of campus-based child care and discusses methods for evaluating such programs, particularly service-oriented models. The paper then reviews program evaluation carried out in Spring 1982 of the Carlow College “Playroom” and summarizes resulting recommendations that aim to improve program quality. Methods and strategies used in this evaluation may be implemented on other campuses that provide similarly service-oriented programs.
