BY GARY DUNHAM A number of years ago, when I was a book publisher, I received a call one late afternoon—around 4 o’clock or so. A voice percolating with excitement greeted me. “Hi, Gary. I’m from Wyoming and I’ve got a great book project for—.” The line went dead. Shrugging, as I didn’t have Caller ID, I hung up and waited for the potential author to call back. By 4:23 the phone had not rung, so I picked up the receiver to place another call. A voice leapt out of the phone. Good grief—what a shock. “—so, what do you think of my book?” Oh my goodness, it was the same voice. Apparently the author had talked for 23 minutes about the project and thought I was there. By one of those strange coincidences that creeps every now and then into my life, I just happened to have picked up the phone at exactly the right time to reply. I don’t recall what I said, but I do remember exactly how that bizarre conversation ended. Thanking me, the author confessed, “Oh, Gary, I have worked with many editors but YOU are the best listener of all of them.” So, my dear readers, as I learned during that afternoon steeped in irony, the key to being a successful publisher is, well, listening. Indeed, listening is essential to the work that we do as editors, and it’s indispensable to a vibrant association newsmagazine that’s continually evolving and responsive to members and the professions. One of the many privileges of working on The ASHA Leader is hearing directly from our readers and members extraordinaire. Whether by e-mail, phone or in person at ASHA-sponsored conferences, it’s wonderful to connect with you. Your commitment to clients and the professions inspires us; your knowledge and work galvanize us to be even more comprehensive in covering the world of speech, language, hearing, balance and swallowing. As important, your good ideas about the Leader itself continue to make the newsmagazine even better. It’s clear from many, many comments we’ve received over the past year that you really like the Leader’s new look and content structure. But you’re also not afraid to offer opinions on what could also be covered or what’s not working as successfully as it should be. We appreciate those perspectives as well; a number of topics surfacing in the 2014 Leader are the direct result of your recommendations and tips. However, if sometimes—at the end of a good, open conversation—we agree to disagree, be assured that we do take all of your suggestions to heart. So, please, drop us a line at [email protected], and let us know how well your association’s newsmagazine is working for you. Yes, we’re listening.
