Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions of AI in Education

This study explores the integration of generative AI tools into multiple-subject and single-subject teaching credential courses at California State University Sacramento during the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters. The study involved 210 teacher candidates per semester, most of whom had no prior experience with AI in education. Through a series of AI-focused assignments and a survey, the study investigated preservice teachers' perceptions, experiences, and concerns regarding the use of AI tools in educational settings. The assignments aimed to introduce AI tools, encourage experimentation, and facilitate discussions on the potential benefits and challenges of AI in education. The survey results revealed that a significant majority of participants (88.9%) used generative AI tools for personal learning or teaching preparation, with 92% using text generators like ChatGPT. However, opinions were mixed regarding the adoption of AI in future classrooms, with 49% in favor, 41.2% uncertain, and 9.8% opposed. Key concerns included overreliance on technology and ethical issues. The study concludes that while preservice teachers show enthusiasm for experimenting with AI tools and acknowledge their potential to enhance learning experiences, there is a need for ongoing training and support to ensure ethical and effective implementation. The findings suggest that incorporating AI assignments into the curriculum can provide valuable experiences and prepare preservice teachers for the growing role of AI in education.

A Comparative Study of Machine Learning Classifiers in Oil-Immersed Power Transformer Fault Diagnosis

The most common fault diagnosis method for oil-immersed power transformers is dissolved gas analysis (DGA). Doernenburg ratios, Rogers ratios, IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) ratios, and Duval's triangle are conventional DGA techniques for insulating oil in power transformers. In this study, Scikit-learn known as a popular open-source free machine learning tool for Python programming language has been used to develop different machine learning (ML) classifiers to effectively detect defects in oil-immersed power transformers. These classifiers are Decision Trees, Support Vector Machines, Gaussian Naive Bayes, k-Nearest Neighbours, Random Forests, and Multi-Layer Perceptron. The input vector of each classifier has been formed by Doernenburg ratios, Rogers ratios, IEC ratios, and CSUS (California State University Sacramento) method. After these classifiers are completely trained, unseen DGA data sets are then used to evaluate their performances. Based on a statistical analysis, the study can indicate the most effective type of the input vector and ML classifier for precisely detecting faults in power transformers.

The Lifestyle Eating and Performance (LEAP) Program for Improving Quality of Life in Women With PCOS: A Pilot Study of Dietitian-Directed Therapy

ObjectivesTo investigate the effectiveness of the Lifestyle Eating and Performance (LEAP) program for reducing health-related Quality of Life (QoL) symptoms in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). MethodsA retrospective chart review was conducted of PCOS clients seen by registered dietitians from a private group practice during 2010–2018. The in-vitro Leukocyte Activation Assay (LAA-MRT) was used to identify hidden non-immunoglobulin E (non-IgE) mediated food allergies and chemical sensitivities. The registered dietitians developed a patient-tailored oligoantigenic diet program for each subject.The LEAP program is an elimination diet built on the selection of less reactive food and chemicals based on the LAA-MRT results. A symptom survey was used to assess the QoL at the first visit and each follow-up visit. The severity of symptoms over the past month was recorded and quantified based on the frequency of the symptoms from a scale of 0 (low) to 4 (high) with a minimum score of 0 and a maximum of 248 points.Descriptive statistics were created and reported as means for continuous variables. Mixed model analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed using R Studio Version 1.1.414. The study received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval by California State University Sacramento. ResultsSubjects’ (n = 42) mean age was 35.2 years, and BMI was 34.4 kg/m2. The mean symptoms score at baseline was 72.5. After a personal eating plan was implemented based on the LAA-MRT results (mean 18.1 days following the plan), scores reduced to 29.3 (P < 0.001). The mean score at the second follow-up (mean 44.1 days) was 19.9 (P < 0.001), and at the third (mean 60.0 days) was 14.7 (P < 0.001). ConclusionsFindings from this pilot study highlight that a comprehensive, tailored dietary program can effectively achieve improvements in QoL for women living with PCOS. Admissions Holistic Review of Socioeconomic Factors Fosters Diversity in a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program

Background and Purpose. Holistic admissions practices may be used to increase diversity in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs by consideration of race and ethnicity, educational disadvantaged background, low socioeconomic status, and for persons from geographically underrepresented areas. This study describes the holistic review practices in the DPT program at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) reports the profile of socioeconomic disadvantage (SED), race, and ethnicity; analyzes the relationships between SED and racial identity; and reports acceptance rates by race and SED. The purpose of this study was to strengthen the evidence-based inclusion practices in the program's admissions processes and to offer a model to DPT programs that are seeking to assess and utilize admissions practices to increase the racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of the physical therapy profession. Case Description. The holistic review process at CSUS included weighting 4 Skills and Background Characteristics (SBCs) in determining admissions rankings that encompass the socioeconomic variables of the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy's definition of underrepresented minorities (URMs): 1) second language skills, 2) economic background, 3) educational background, and 4) environmental background. Admissions data were collected on all matriculated students in the first 8 years of the program and all qualified applicants in the last 3 years. Retrospective data analyses explored the relationships between SBC scores, race/ethnicity, and acceptance into the DPT program. Outcomes. Nearly 1 in 3 matriculants were the first in their family to graduate from college, and nearly 40% claimed a race/ethnicity other than White alone. Total SBC scores were found to be statistically significantly associated with racial identity and for underrepresented racial minorities (URRMs). Economic, educational, and environmental disadvantages were statistically significantly associated with URRMs. Acceptance into the program was found to be significantly associated with fluency and all SED variables. Discussion and Conclusion. Admissions weighting of SBC factors led to increased linguistic, socioeconomic, and racial diversity. Methods used in this study may serve as a model to other US Doctor of Physical Therapy programs that are seeking to offset the disadvantages that URMs have in gaining acceptance into physical therapist education programs. The expanded use of data-driven holistic admissions practices may contribute to the racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of the physical therapy profession.

Identifying the Metal That Activates the Prenyltransferase That Catalyzes Formation of Geranyl Diphosphate in the Diatom Pseudo‐nitzschia multiseries

Domoic acid (DA) is a neurotoxin synthesized by marine diatoms of the genus Pseudo‐nitzschia which causes amnesiac shellfish poisoning in humans and death of marine wildlife. Geranyl diphosphate (GPP), a key intermediate in domoic acid biosynthesis, is formed from the “head‐to‐tail” condensation of isopentenyl diphosphate and dimethylallyl diphosphate in a reaction catalyzed by a member of the prenyltransferase family of enzymes. These prenyltransferases can generate different chain‐length products, including geranyl diphosphate (C10), farnesyl diphosphate (FPP, C15), and geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP, C20), all of which are precursors to terpenoid natural products. Prenyltransferases require a divalent metal cation for activity. Previous work has shown that a single prenyltransferase can generate multiple products (GPP, FPP, and GGPP), and that the product distribution will vary depending on the species of divalent cation used to support the reaction (Mg2+, Mn2+, or Co2+). Here, we measured the levels of Mg2+, Mn2+, and Co2+ in Pseudo‐nitzschia cells to determine which ion is most likely to support GPP formation. Three samples of Pseudo‐nitzschia multiseries cultured in sea water were harvested by centrifugation. Samples were digested with HNO3 before analysis using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The average concentration of Mg2+ present, per cell and per μm3, is over 100‐fold higher than the concentrations of Mn2+ and Co2+. This is consistent with results from studies in other systems, suggesting that Mg2+ is the main cofactor that activates the prenyltransferase that generates GPP for domoic acid biosynthesis in Pseudo‐nitzschia.Support or Funding InformationThis project is supported by the SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) Award Program from the College of Natural Science and Mathematics, California State University Sacramento.

Charter schools don’t serve black children well

The NAACP, nation’s largest civil rights organization, steps up its opposition to charter schools just as a president and new education secretary appear ready to kick the sector into high gear. In 2016, the NAACP passed a resolution calling on a moratorium on the expansion of charter schools, citing concerns about transparency and accountability, diversion of money away from traditional public schools to charter schools, discipline and segregation of racial minorities. Julian Vasquez Heilig, who is a member of the California NAACP and a professor of educational leadership and policy studies at California State University Sacramento, responds to questions about that resolution and the role that charter schools play in the United States.

Integrated ANN-based proactive fault diagnostic scheme for power transformers using dissolved gas analysis

This paper focuses on a Smart Fault Diagnostic Approach (SFDA) based on the integration among the output results of recognized dissolved gas analysis (DGA) techniques. These techniques are Dornenburg method, Electro-technical Commission standard (IEC) Code, the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) Code based on Rogers' four ratios, Rogers method given in IEEE-C57 standard, and the Duval triangle. The artificial neural networks (ANN) model is constructed to monitor the transformer fault conditions and trained for each technique individually. The fault decision of each ANN model supplies the proposed integrated SFDA. The integration between these DGA approaches not only improves the fault condition monitoring of the transformers but also overcomes the individual weakness and the differences between the above methods. Toward a better diagnostic scheme, a new SFDA is developed based on the integration of the most three appropriate DGA methods. Further gas concentrations have been considered as raw data (California State University Sacramento (CSUS) as an example) to enhance the proposed SFDA performance. Comparison of each DGA concept with respect to the proposed one is reported, where the results provide evidences of the efficacy of the proposed SFDA.

This article aims to show that among the diverse methodologies used in the ESL classroom, drama provides unique benefits which justify its place as part of the language learning curriculum. Drama includes the diverse language learning approaches, making it an ideal and unique solution to teaching literacy skills to this specific population. Therefore, drama, by using the systematic multisensory teaching approach, is a very important cross-curricular activity and method for English language learners with dyslexia to improve their language skills. The drama approach benefits those students to develop literacy skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Can An Algebraic Diagnostic Test be Used to Predict Final Grades in an Introductory Statistics Class?

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State University Sacramento has been using the Intermediate Algebra Diagnostic (IAD) test as a proxy tool to screen students intending to enroll in an introductory statistics course (Stat 1). However, the use of an algebraic test as a diagnostic tool for a statistics course has been questioned by some faculty members and students at this university. The regression models used in this study (simple linear regression, hierarchical linear regression, and logistic regression) show that higher IAD scores are related to higher final grades in Stat 1, even after adjusting for different instructors. Inferences were also made in this study to predict a passing grade and passing rates in Stat 1 based on the bounds of the confidence and prediction intervals obtained for the IAD scores with these models. The campus‐wide laptop loan service and the library's role

PurposeThis paper aims to present a successful partnership between the library and other campus units of California State University Sacramento in the program of campus‐wide laptop loan service. As an integral part of university resources, the library staff and systems play an exceptional role in collaborating with other university units in the campus‐wide program.Design/methodology/approachThree campus units worked together to create a model of support in innovation, cooperation and sharing of the campus resources, technology and expertise. Introducing the establishment of the campus‐wide loan service program and sharing service feedback retrieved from multiple service units in the project contributed to the success of this new program in the campus resource‐sharing practice.FindingsCollaboration, cooperation, and teamwork are fundamental in sharing campus resources, and creating staffing synergies and delivering an ever‐increasing range of university services, especially in an environment of budget constraints and economic difficulties.Originality/valueThere are many academic libraries now providing laptop loan service, but campus‐wide laptop loan service needs more collaboration, cooperation and communication for the program crew to embrace differences in serving a common‐interest group.

In the program, which took place at the ASHA Convention, participants had the opportunity to gain insight into their own leadership skills and a better understanding of how leaders effect change in their professional association. The students participate in activities to increase their awareness of the association, including observing committees and boards, and have direct access to association leaders through networking at the MSLP Leadership Simulation, the Multicultural Concerns Collective (MC2) meeting, and other convention events.
