Entanglement in photo-ionization process.

We report a study of the entanglement between the quantized photon field and an atom arising in the photo-ionization process. Our approach is based on an ab initio solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) describing the quantum evolution of a bipartite system consisting of the atom and the quantized electromagnetic field. Using the solution of the TDSE, we calculate the reduced photon density matrix, which we subsequently use to compute entanglement entropy. We explain some properties of the entanglement entropy and propose an approximate formula for the entanglement entropy based on the analysis of the density matrix and its eigenvalues. We present the results of a comparative study of the entanglement in the photo-ionization process for various ionization regimes, including the tunneling and the multiphoton ionization regimes.

Infinite neural network quantum states: entanglement and training dynamics

We study infinite limits of neural network quantum states (-NNQS), which exhibit representation power through ensemble statistics, and also tractable gradient descent dynamics. Ensemble averages of entanglement entropies are expressed in terms of neural network correlators, and architectures that exhibit volume-law entanglement are presented. The analytic calculations of entanglement entropy bound are tractable because the ensemble statistics are simplified in the Gaussian process limit. A general framework is developed for studying the gradient descent dynamics of neural network quantum states (NNQS), using a quantum state neural tangent kernel (QS-NTK). For -NNQS the training dynamics is simplified, since the QS-NTK becomes deterministic and constant. An analytic solution is derived for quantum state supervised learning, which allows an -NNQS to recover any target wavefunction. Numerical experiments on finite and infinite NNQS in the transverse field Ising model and Fermi Hubbard model demonstrate excellent agreement with theory. -NNQS opens up new opportunities for studying entanglement and training dynamics in other physics applications, such as in finding ground states.

Jackiw-Teitelboim Gravity from the Karch-Randall Braneworld.

In this Letter, we show that Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity can be naturally realized in the Karch-Randall braneworld. Notably the role of the dilaton in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity is played by the radion in a suitably orbifolded version of the setup. In the classical entanglement entropy calculation, there is an apparent degeneracy of Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces. We demonstrate how quantum fluctuations of the radion/dilaton resolve this would-be classical puzzle regarding entanglement wedge reconstruction.

BCFT and Islands in two dimensions

By combining the AdS/BCFT correspondence and the brane world holography, we expect an equivalence relation between a boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) and a gravitational system coupled to a CFT. However, it still remains unclear how the boundary condition of the BCFT is translated in the gravitational system. We examine this duality relation in a two-dimensional setup by looking at the computation of entanglement entropy and energy flux conservation. We also identify the two-dimensional gravity which is dual to the boundary dynamics of a BCFT. Moreover, we show that by considering a gravity solution with scalar fields turned on, we can reproduce one point functions correctly in the AdS/BCFT.

Dirichlet baths and the not-so-fine-grained Page curve

We present a doubly holographic prescription for computing entanglement entropy on a gravitating brane. It involves a Ryu-Takayanagi surface with a Dirichlet anchoring condition. In braneworld cosmology, a related approach was used previously in arXiv:2007.06551. There, the prescription naturally computed a co-moving entanglement entropy, and was argued to resolve the information paradox for a black hole living in the cosmology. In this paper, we show that the Dirichlet prescription leads to reasonable results, when applied to a recently studied wedge holography set up with a gravitating bath. The nature of the information paradox and its resolution in our Dirichlet problem have a natural understanding in terms of the strength of gravity on the two branes and at the anchoring location. By sliding the anchor to the defect, we demonstrate that the limit where gravity decouples from the anchor is continuous — in other words, as far as island physics is considered, weak gravity on the anchor is identical to no gravity. The weak and (moderately) strong gravity regions on the brane are separated by a “Dirichlet wall”. We find an intricate interplay between various extremal surfaces, with an island coming to the rescue whenever there is an information paradox. This is despite the presence of massless gravitons in the spectrum. The overall physics is consistent with the slogan that gravity becomes “more holographic”, as it gets stronger. Our observations strengthen the case that the conventional Page curve is indeed of significance, when discussing the information paradox in flat space. We work in high enough dimensions so that the graviton is non-trivial, and our results are in line with the previous discussions on gravitating baths in arXiv:2005.02993 and arXiv:2007.06551.

Holographic entanglement entropy in flat limit of the generalized minimal massive gravity model

Previously we have studied the Generalized Minimal Massive Gravity (GMMG) in asymptotically AdS_3 background, and have shown that the theory is free of negative-energy bulk modes. Also we have shown GMMG avoids the aforementioned “bulk-boundary unitarity clash”. Here instead of AdS_3 space we consider asymptotically flat space, and study this model in the flat limit. The dual field theory of GMMG in the flat limit is a BMS_3 invariant field theory, dubbed (BMSFT) and we have BMS algebra asymptotically instead of Virasoro algebra. In fact here we present an evidence for this claim. Entanglement entropy of GMMG is calculated in the background in the flat null infinity. Our evidence for mentioned claim is the result for entanglement entropy in filed theory side and in the bulk (in the gravity side). At first using Cardy formula and Rindler transformation, we calculate entanglement entropy of BMSFT in three different cases. Zero temperature on the plane and on the cylinder, and non-zero temperature case. Then we obtain the entanglement entropy in the bulk. Our results in gravity side are exactly in agreement with field theory calculations.

Entanglement entropy from TFD entropy operator

In this work, a canonical method to compute entanglement entropy is proposed. We show that for two-dimensional conformal theories defined in a torus, a choice of moduli space allows the typical entropy operator of the TFD to provide the entanglement entropy of the degrees of freedom defined in a segment and their complement. In this procedure, it is not necessary to make an analytic continuation from the Rényi entropy and the von Neumann entanglement entropy is calculated directly from the expected value of an entanglement entropy operator. We also propose a model for the evolution of the entanglement entropy and show that it grows linearly with time.

Path integral implementation of relational quantum mechanics

Relational formulation of quantum mechanics is based on the idea that relational properties among quantum systems, instead of the independent properties of a quantum system, are the most fundamental elements to construct quantum mechanics. In a recent paper (Yang in Sci Rep 8:13305, 2018), basic relational quantum mechanics framework is formulated to derive quantum probability, Born’s Rule, Schrödinger Equations, and measurement theory. This paper further extends the reformulation effort in three aspects. First, it gives a clearer explanation of the key concepts behind the framework to calculate measurement probability. Second, we provide a concrete implementation of the relational probability amplitude by extending the path integral formulation. The implementation not only clarifies the physical meaning of the relational probability amplitude, but also allows us to elegantly explain the double slit experiment, to describe the interaction history between the measured system and a series of measuring systems, and to calculate entanglement entropy based on path integral and influence functional. In return, the implementation brings back new insight to path integral itself by completing the explanation on why measurement probability can be calculated as modulus square of probability amplitude. Lastly, we clarify the connection between our reformulation and the quantum reference frame theory. A complete relational formulation of quantum mechanics needs to combine the present works with the quantum reference frame theory.

Holographic entanglement entropy of the Coulomb branch

We compute entanglement entropy (EE) of a spherical region in (3 + 1)-dimensional mathcal{N} = 4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in states described holographically by probe D3-branes in AdS5 × S5. We do so by generalising methods for computing EE from a probe brane action without having to determine the probe’s backreaction. On the Coulomb branch with SU(N) broken to SU(N − 1) × U(1), we find the EE monotonically decreases as the sphere’s radius increases, consistent with the a-theorem. The EE of a symmetric-representation Wilson line screened in SU(N − 1) also monotonically decreases, although no known physical principle requires this. A spherical soliton separating SU(N) inside from SU(N − 1) × U(1) outside had been proposed to model an extremal black hole. However, we find the EE of a sphere at the soliton’s radius does not scale with the surface area. For both the screened Wilson line and soliton, the EE at large radius is described by a position-dependent W-boson mass as a short-distance cutoff. Our holographic results for EE and one-point functions of the Lagrangian and stress-energy tensor show that at large distance the soliton looks like a Wilson line in a direct product of fundamental representations.

Island in the presence of higher derivative terms

Using extended island formula we compute entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation for black hole solutions of certain gravitational models containing higher derivative terms. To be concrete we consider two different four dimensional models to compute entropy for both asymptotically flat and AdS black holes. One observes that the resultant entropy follows the Page curve, thanks to the contribution of the island, despite the fact that the corresponding gravitational models might be non-unitary.

Geometric secret sharing in a model of Hawking radiation

We consider a black hole in three dimensional AdS space entangled with an auxiliary radiation system. We model the microstates of the black hole in terms of a field theory living on an end of the world brane behind the horizon, and allow this field theory to itself have a holographic dual geometry. This geometry is also a black hole since entanglement of the microstates with the radiation leaves them in a mixed state. This “inception black hole” can be purified by entanglement through a wormhole with an auxiliary system which is naturally identified with the external radiation, giving a realization of the ER=EPR scenario. In this context, we propose an extension of the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula, in which extremal surfaces computing entanglement entropy are allowed to pass through the brane into its dual geometry. This new rule reproduces the Page curve for evaporating black holes, consistently with the recently proposed “island formula”. We then separate the radiation system into pieces. Our extended RT rule shows that the entanglement wedge of the union of radiation subsystems covers the black hole interior at late times, but the union of entanglement wedges of the subsystems may not. This result points to a secret sharing scheme in Hawking radiation wherein reconstruction of certain regions in the interior is impossible with any subsystem of the radiation, but possible with all of it.

Entanglement entropy of fermions from Wigner functions: Excited states and open quantum systems

We formulate a new ``Wigner characteristics''-based method to calculate entanglement entropies of subsystems of Fermions using Keldysh field theory. This bypasses the requirements of working with complicated manifolds for calculating R\'enyi entropies for many-body systems. We provide an exact analytic formula for R\'enyi and von Neumann entanglement entropies of noninteracting open quantum systems, which are initialized in arbitrary Fock states. We use this formalism to look at entanglement entropies of momentum Fock states of one-dimensional Fermions. We show that the entanglement entropy of a Fock state can scale either logarithmically or linearly with subsystem size, depending on whether the number of discontinuities in the momentum distribution is smaller or larger than the subsystem size. We also use this formalism to describe entanglement dynamics of an open quantum system starting with a single domain wall at the center of the system. Using entanglement entropy and mutual information, we understand the dynamics in terms of coherent motion of the domain wall wavefronts, creation and annihilation of domain walls, and incoherent exchange of particles with the bath.

Relativistic Quantum Information of Anyons

In this paper, a method is developed to investigate the relativistic quantum information of anyons. Anyons are particles with intermediate statistics ranging between Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics, with a parameter $\alpha$ ($0<\alpha<1$) characteristic of this intermediate statistics. A density matrix is also introduced as a combination of the density matrices of bosons and fermions with a continuous parameter, $\alpha$, that represents the behavior of anyons. This density matrix reduces to bosonic and fermionic density matrices in the limits $\alpha\rightarrow 0$ and $\alpha\rightarrow 1$,respectively. We compute entanglement entropy, negativity, and coherency for anyons in non-inertial frames as a function of $\alpha$. We also computed quantum fisher information for these particles. Semions, which are particles with $\alpha = 0.5$, were found to have minimum quantum fisher information with respect to $\alpha$ than those with other values of fractional parameter.

High temperature behavior of non-local observables in boosted strongly coupled plasma: a holographic study

In this work, we perform a holographic analysis to study non local observables associated to a uniformly boosted strongly coupled large N thermal plasma in d-dimensions. In order to accomplish the holographic analysis, the appropriate dual bulk theory turns out to be d+1 dimensional boosted AdS-Schwarzschild blackhole background. In particular, we compute entanglement entropy of the boosted plasma at high temperature living inside a strip geometry with entangling width l in the boundary at a particular instant of time. We also study the two-point correlators in the boundary by following geodesic approximation method. For analyzing the effect of boosting on the thermal plasma and correspondingly on both non local observables, we keep the alignment of the width of region of interest both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the boost. We find our results significantly modified compared to those in un-boosted plasma up to the quadratic order of the boost velocity v. More interestingly, the relative orientation of the boost and the entangling width play a crucial role to quantify the holographic entanglement entropy in the boundary theory. The breaking of rotational symmetry in the boundary theory due to the boosting of the plasma along a specific flat direction causes this interesting feature.

Quantum correction of the Wilson line and entanglement entropy in the pure AdS3 Einstein gravity theory

We calculate the expectation value of the Wilson line in the pure AdS3 Einstein gravity theory and also the entanglement entropy in the boundary theory. Our one-loop calculation of entanglement entropy shows a shift of the central charge 26. Finally, we show that the Wilson line provides the equivalent description to the boundary entanglement entropy. This equivalence leads to a concrete example of the building of “minimum surface=entanglement entropy”.

Toverline{T} and EE, with implications for (A)dS subregion encodings

We initiate a study of subregion dualities, entropy, and redundant encoding of bulk points in holographic theories deformed by Toverline{T} and its generalizations. This includes both cut off versions of Anti de Sitter spacetime, as well as the generalization to bulk de Sitter spacetime, for which we introduce two additional examples capturing different patches of the bulk and incorporating the second branch of the square root dressed energy formula. We provide new calculations of entanglement entropy (EE) for more general divisions of the system than the symmetric ones previously available. We find precise agreement between the gravity side and deformed-CFT side results to all orders in the deformation parameter at large central charge. An analysis of the fate of strong subadditivity for relatively boosted regions indicates nonlocality reminiscent of string theory. We introduce the structure of operator algebras in these systems. The causal and entanglement wedges generalize to appropriate deformed theories but exhibit qualitatively new behaviors, e.g. the causal wedge may exceed the entanglement wedge. This leads to subtleties which we express in terms of the Hamiltonian and modular Hamiltonian evolution. Finally, we exhibit redundant encoding of bulk points, including the cosmological case.

Entanglement entropy and the large N expansion of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

Two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is a useful model of an exactly solvable gauge theory with a string theory dual at large N. We calculate entanglement entropy in the 1/N expansion by mapping the theory to a system of N fermions interacting via a repulsive entropic force. The entropy is a sum of two terms: the “Boltzmann entropy,” log dim(R) per point of the entangling surface, which counts the number of distinct microstates, and the “Shannon entropy,” − Σ pR log pR, which captures fluctuations of the macroscopic state. We find that the entropy scales as N2 in the large N limit, and that at this order only the Boltzmann entropy contributes. We further show that the Shannon entropy scales linearly with N, and confirm this behaviour with numerical simulations. While the term of order N is surprising from the point of view of the string dual — in which only even powers of N appear in the partition function — we trace it to a breakdown of large N counting caused by the replica trick. This mechanism could lead to corrections to holographic entanglement entropy larger than expected from semiclassical field theory.

Flat bands and entanglement in the Kitaev ladder

We report the existence of \emph{flat bands} in a p-wave superconducting Kitaev ladder. We identify two sets of parameters for which the Kitaev ladder sustains flat bands. These flat bands are accompanied by highly localized eigenstates known as compact localized states. Invoking a Bogoliubov transformation, the Kitaev ladder can be mapped into an interlinked cross-stitch lattice. The mapping helps to reveal the compactness of the eigenstates each of which covers only two unit cells of the interlinked cross-stitch lattice. The Kitaev Hamiltonian undergoes a topological-to-trivial phase transition when certain parameters are fine-tuned. Correlation matrix techniques allow us to compute entanglement entropy of the many-body eigenstates. The study of entanglement entropy affords fresh insight into the topological phase transitions in the model. Sharp features in entanglement entropy when bands cross indicate a deep underlying relationship between entanglement entropy and dispersion.

Neural-Network Quantum State of Transverse-Field Ising Model**Supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant No. 11875082

Along the way initiated by Carleo and Troyer [G. Carleo and M. Troyer, Science 355 (2017) 602], we construct the neural-network quantum state of transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) by an unsupervised machine learning method. Such a wave function is a map from the spin-configuration space to the complex number field determined by an array of network parameters. To get the ground state of the system, values of the network parameters are calculated by a Stochastic Reconfiguration (SR) method. We provide for this SR method an understanding from action principle and information geometry aspects. With this quantum state, we calculate key observables of the system, the energy, correlation function, correlation length, magnetic moment, and susceptibility. As innovations, we provide a high efficiency method and use it to calculate entanglement entropy (EE) of the system and get results consistent with previous work very well.

Local entanglement and confinement transitions in the random transverse-field Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice

We use numerical linked cluster expansions (NLC) and exact diagonalization to study confinement transitions out of the quantum spin liquid phase in the pyrochlore-lattice Ising antiferromagnet with random transverse fields. We calculate entanglement entropies associated with local regions defined by single tetrahedron to observe these transitions. The randomness-induced confinement transition is marked by a sharp reduction in the local entanglement and a concomitant increase in Ising correlations. In NLC, it is studied through the destruction of loop resonances due to random transverse-fields. The confining phase is characterized by a distribution of local entanglement entropies, which persists to large random fields.
