SynopsisThis paper represents an attempt to collect and correlate previously published information and hitherto unpublished data on the standard cadmium plating solutions now being used by industry. The following subjects have been treated: General considerations, including the chemistry of the solution in regard to the cadmicyanide complex and “free cyanide,” conductivity, single potentials of Cd in the solutions; cathode conditions, including deposition potentials, current efficiencies, throwing power and appearance and mechanical properties of the plate; anode conditions with soluble and insoluble anodes, including anode polarization, current efficiency, and rate of carbonate formation.Published information has been correlated, and we have added some findings of our own. The scope has been limited to exclude special purpose solutions and references in the literature which do not appear to represent original work.
