Monitoring firn and wet snow on mountain glaciers: polarization and orbit effects

ABSTRACT Mountain glaciers are sensitive to climate variability and can be of great importance for downstream populations due to their hydrological significance. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are often used to monitor the characteristics of glaciers based on the backscattering coefficient. However, the influence of satellite orbit and polarization when collecting images for wide regions has not been well considered. This study focuses on the extraction of wet snow in summer and firn in winter in West Kunlun Shan and the Tibet Interior Mountains by using Sentinel-1 C-band SAR data. The investigated regions have different climate patterns. We compare backscatter coefficient distributions for wet snow and firn, derived from maximum likelihood classification under various polarizations, alongside their respective ratios and show that polarization has a minor impact on the identification and monitoring of both wet snow and firn. However, a comparison of the wet snow ratios at different satellite orbits reveals notable differences between ascending and descending orbits in summer. We furthermore show, by analyzing weather stations on glaciers, that such effect can be related to the different acquisition time and different temperatures in the morning and afternoon and therefore to the orbit. In contrast, firn ratios across different orbits show less variation in winter, and the monitoring results consistently align with the patterns of ablation and accumulation typical under both climatic influences. These findings demonstrate glaciers’ sensitivity to temperature fluctuations and the radar wave’s responsiveness to surface characteristics. Consequently, when employing SAR for glacier monitoring, it is crucial to consider the influence of orbit and polarization, in combination with temperature variations, and whether the season is winter or summer.

Lithology classification of igneous rocks using C-band and L-band dual-polarization SAR data

Abstract Distinguishing different kinds of igneous rocks is difficult because of their subtle differences. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is sensitive to rock surface morphology, which can help a lot in classification. Dual-pol SAR data have the advantages of low cost, but few articles are using only dual-pol SAR data for igneous rock classification. In this study, we explored the performance of dual-pol SAR data in distinguishing granitoid, tuff, and syenite porphyry. Backscatter coefficients, polarization decomposition parameters, and texture features from gray-level co-occurrence matrix extracted by Sentinel-1 or PALSAR were classified using several machine learning algorithms. The results are as follows. First, the texture information has greater potential for igneous rock classification, but the polarization decomposition parameters contribute less. Second, after comparing machine learning algorithms, AdaBoost algorithm has the highest overall accuracy for either C-band or L-band SAR data. C-band SAR data provide better classification results than L-band. Finally, tuff is the easiest igneous rock to be successfully classified, and L-band dual-pol SAR data have advantages in the discrimination of syenite porphyry. This study outlines the effectiveness of dual-pol SAR data for igneous rock classification, which will help to select SAR data of appropriate wavelengths for specific types of lithology discrimination.

Total-variation regularized U-Net for wildfire burned area mapping based on Sentinel-1 C-Band SAR backscattering data

Previous studies have shown that Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is able to detect burned areas, serving as a key data source for monitoring active wildfires in situations where optical sensors are hindered by dense smoke or cloud cover. Radar remote sensing provides rich and useful data on historical burned areas, which are critical for large-scale wildfire burned area mapping. This study aims to unveil the potential inherent in Sentinel-1 C-Band SAR data and to investigate the impact of reference masks on wildfire burned area mapping. SAR images frequently exhibit disruptive speckle noise, which manifests as isolated pixels or small regions, thereby hindering the seamless identification of burned areas through SAR data. To mitigate noise and enhance the connectivity of SAR-based burned area delineation, we propose a novel approach: a Total-Variation (TV) regularized U-Net model, tailored to learn from noisy pseudo masks derived from Sentinel-1 C-Band SAR backscattering data. To validate its efficacy, we assembled a dataset encompassing 16 geographically diverse wildfire events, incorporating SAR-based kMap, a SAR-based binary label (designated as SARREF), and an optical-based binary label (referred to as OptREF). The kMap, serving as a relative indicator of SAR backscattering change, is defined as the divergence between post-fire SAR backscattering and the temporal average, normalized by the temporal standard deviation of pre-fire SAR time series. Utilizing SAR-based kMap as input and SARREF or OptREF as labels, we systematically explored the impact of TV regularization on SAR-based burned area mapping. Our experimental findings highlight several key insights: 1) Vanilla U-Net considerably elevates the F1 score from 0.61 to 0.66 when compared to threshold-based approaches; 2) The TV-regularized U-Net exhibits a notable capacity for enhancing both accuracy and the connectivity of SAR-based burned areas. When trained with noisy SARREF, it achieves a substantial F1 score of 0.69 and an IoU score of 0.53. 3) In scenarios involving OptREF, the vanilla U-Net attains peak performance with the highest F1 (0.75) and IoU (0.61) scores, with the expected outcome of TV regularization yielding no additional enhancement.

Mapping Surface Organic Soil Properties in Arctic Tundra Using C-Band SAR Data

Surface soil organic carbon (SOC) content is among the first-order controls on the rate and extent of Arctic permafrost thaw. There is a large discrepancy in current SOC estimates in Arctic tundra, where sparse measurements are unable to capture SOC complexity over the vast tundra region. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are sensitive to surface vegetation, roughness, and moisture conditions, and may provide useful information on surface SOC properties. Here, we investigated the potential of multitemporal Sentinel-1 C-band SAR data for regional SOC mapping in the Arctic tundra through principal component analysis (PCA). Multiple <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in situ</i> SOC datasets in the Alaska North Slope were assembled to generate a consistent surface (0–10 cm) SOC and bulk density dataset ( <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">n</i> = 97). The radar VV backscatter shows a strong correlation with surface SOC, but the correlation varies greatly with surface snow, moisture, and freeze/thaw conditions. However, the first principal component (PC1) of radar backscatter time series from different years shows spatial consistency representing dominant and persistent surface backscatter behavior. The PC1 also shows a strong linear correlation with surface SOC concentration ( <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">R</i> = 0.65, <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">p</i> <0.01), and an exponential relationship with bulk density ( <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">R</i> = −0.65, <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">p</i> <0.01). The resulting predicted SOC maps show much lower soil bulk density and higher SOC concentration in the southern shrub tundra area than in the northern coastal region, consistent with <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in situ</i> data. Our analysis shows that it is possible to separate the effects of different factors on the radar backscatter response using PCA and multitemporal SAR data, which may lead to more effective satellite-based methods for Arctic SOC mapping.

Flash-Flood Potential Mapping in Agricultural Land Using Rule-Based Classification Approach on Multi-Temporal Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) Data over Jhajjar and Rohtak Districts of Haryana State

Flash floods are known to be most dangerous flood. In recent decades there is change in the climate and urban development causing increase in the risk of flash flood for human population. Remote sensing and geographical information system playing a very important and feasible role in assessment of the flash flood over a decade. This paper describes the synergetic use of Synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) data to delineate and mapping of the flooded area at its peak. The methodology was tested on the flash flood event that occurs in Jhajjar and Rohtak districts of Haryana in July, 2022. Four Sentinel-1 Synthetic-aperture radar data were acquired and pre-processed, two images are acquired before the occurrence of the event and two SAR images were acquired after the event. For the identification and demarcation of the flooded area, the rule-based classification approach was used. The results of the study suggests the scope of using multi-temporal Sentinel-1 VV polarized C-band SAR data to develop an operational flash-flood area identification and framework.

Combination of Hyperspectral and Quad-Polarization SAR Images to Classify Marsh Vegetation Using Stacking Ensemble Learning Algorithm

Combinations of multi-sensor remote sensing images and machine learning have attracted much attention in recent years due to the spectral similarity of wetland plant canopy. However, the integration of hyperspectral and quad-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images for classifying marsh vegetation has still been faced with the challenges of using machine learning algorithms. To resolve this issue, this study proposed an approach to classifying marsh vegetation in the Honghe National Nature Reserve, northeast China, by combining backscattering coefficient and polarimetric decomposition parameters of C-band and L-band quad-polarization SAR data with hyperspectral images. We further developed an ensemble learning model by stacking Random Forest (RF), CatBoost and XGBoost algorithms for marsh vegetation mapping and evaluated its classification performance of marsh vegetation between combinations of hyperspectral and full-polarization SAR data and any of the lone sensor images. Finally, this paper explored the effect of different polarimetric decomposition methods and wavelengths of radar on classifying wetland vegetation. We found that a combination of ZH-1 hyperspectral images, C-band GF-3, and L-band ALOS-2 quad-polarization SAR images achieved the highest overall classification accuracy (93.13%), which was 5.58–9.01% higher than that only using C-band or L-band quad-polarization SAR images. This study confirmed that stacking ensemble learning provided better performance than a single machine learning model using multi-source images in most of the classification schemes, with the overall accuracy ranging from 77.02% to 92.27%. The CatBoost algorithm was capable of identifying forests and deep-water marsh vegetation. We further found that L-band ALOS-2 SAR images achieved higher classification accuracy when compared to C-band GF-3 polarimetric SAR data. ALOS-2 was more sensitive to deep-water marsh vegetation classification, while GF-3 was more sensitive to shallow-water marsh vegetation mapping. Finally, scattering model-based decomposition provided important polarimetric parameters from ALOS-2 SAR images for marsh vegetation classification, while eigenvector/eigenvalue-based and two-component decompositions produced a great contribution when using GF-3 SAR images.

Snow cover characterization using C-band polarimetric SAR in parts of the Himalaya

Assessment of the snow cover state in the initiation zone of an avalanche is essential for the snow avalanche hazard mapping in the mountainous region. Seasonal snow cover is very dynamic in the Himalaya and changes its state from dry to moist or wet according to temperature during the progression of winter. In this study, a methodology based on decomposition techniques using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in conjunction with field snow wetness profiles is adapted for characterization of snow cover into dry and moist or wet snow in the Himalayan region. C-band Radarsat-2 full-polarization SAR data is utilized for polarimetric descriptors generation by applying various in-coherent target decomposition techniques, viz., Yamaguchi 4-component, Freeman Durden 3-component and Wishart Unsupervised (H-α). The generated polarimetric descriptors, viz., surface, volume, double-bounce and helix scattering are utilized in the supervised classification and Entropy (H) and mean scattering angle (α) for understanding the underlying scattering process happening within the snowpack. These decomposition models although describes various physical scattering mechanisms but are inadequate to provide quantitative estimates of underlying physical properties (as in our case changes in snowpack wetness). A supervised classification based on support vector machine (SVM) is used to characterize snow cover with changing conditions of snow wetness from dry to moist or wet. Three data sets of snow-accumulation and snow-melt period of winter 2015 are processed and analyzed along with field snow wetness (% by volume) profiles. A total 47 Nos. of snow wetness profiles of the snowpack are collected using snow fork instrument in synchronous with satellite passes at well distributed, identifiable field locations and are used in the training (34 Nos.) and testing (13 Nos.) of the SVM model. Snow being heterogeneous material varies metamorphically within snowpack. Based on changing weather conditions and sun exposure duration, it results into different scattering behavior in microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum. It has been qualitatively observed from target decomposition results that polarimetric descriptors generated using Yamaguchi 4-component scattering decomposition have better captured the increase in the surface scattering (during February and March imagery, due to wet snow conditions of snow cover) from volume scattering (during January imagery, due to dry or moist snow conditions) from seasonal snowpack over the acquisition period from January to March 2015. Further to understand and comprehend the scattering process in the snowpack metamorphism with time, Wishart unsupervised (H-α) classification has been applied on all Radarsat-2 datasets. It was observed in the Himalayan region that during 29 Jan 2015 under dry snow conditions, anisotropic and multiple scattering processes dominates and during period between 22 Feb 2015 and 18 Mar 2015 under moist or wet snow conditions the dipole and Bragg type scattering are dominating. A confusion matrix has been generated for the accuracy assessment of the SVM based classification results, which shows overall accuracy ∼ 79.6 % (for 29 Jan 2015), 72.4 % (for 22 Feb 2015) and 74.5 % (for 18 Mar 2015), respectively with the testing samples. The C-band polarimetric SAR data shown its capability for snow cover type characterization and can be applied for operational applications in the avalanche zones of the snow bound terrain.

Monitoring peatland water table depth with optical and radar satellite imagery

Peatland water table depth (WTD) and wetness have widely been monitored with optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remote sensing but there is a lack of studies that have used multi-sensor data, i.e., combination of optical and SAR data. We assessed how well WTD can be monitored with remote sensing data, whether multi-sensor approach boosts explanatory capacity and whether there are differences in regression performance between data and peatland types. Our data consisted of continuous multiannual WTD data from altogether 50 restored and undrained Finnish peatlands, and optical (Landsat 5–8, Sentinel-2) and Sentinel-1 C-band SAR data processed in Google Earth Engine. We calculated random forest regressions with dependent variable being WTD and independent variables consisting of 21 optical and 10 SAR metrics. The average regression performance was moderate in multi-sensor models (R 2 43.1%, nRMSE 19.8%), almost as high in optical models (R 2 42.4%, nRMSE 19.9%) but considerably lower in C-band SAR models (R 2 21.8%, nRMSE 23.4%) trained separately for each site. When the models included data from several sites but were trained separately for six habitat type and management option combinations, the average R 2 was 40.6% for the multi-sensor models, 36.6% for optical models and 33.7% for C-band SAR models. There was considerable site-specific variation in the model performance (R 2 −3.3–88.8% in the multi-sensor models ran separately for each site) and whether multi-sensor, optical or C-band SAR model performed best. The average regression performance was higher for undrained than for restored peatlands, and higher for open and sparsely treed than for densely treed peatlands. The most important variables included SWIR-based optical metrics and VV SAR backscatter. Our results suggest that optical data works usually better than does C-band SAR data in peatland WTD monitoring and multi-sensor approach increases explanatory capacity moderately little.

An improved approach of dry snow density estimation using C-band synthetic aperture radar data

Snow density is one of the important indicators of snow cover hydrological potential. The application of existing algorithms for retrieving dry snow density using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is limited by single scattering mechanism, small terrain fluctuation or narrow incidence angle range. In the study, an improved approach was proposed to retrieve dry snow density from C-band SAR data with a wide range of roughness and local incidence angles. Both the snow-ground interface scattering and volume scattering were considered in the approach. First, the relationship between the backscattering at the snow-ground interface and relative permittivity was obtained based on simulation using the Advanced Integral Equation Model (AIEM) and regression analysis. Then the classical relationship between the volume backscattering and relative permittivity obtained by the first-order volume scattering model was incorporated into the approach. For comparison, the coefficients of the Shi algorithm were redefined by the AIEM model and regression analysis, and the Shi algorithm initially developed for L-band was modified for C-band. In experiments, the RADARSAT-2 data obtained in the Manasi River Basin on December 12–17, 2013 and the C-band GaoFen-3 data obtained in the Kelan River Basin on January 17, 2018 were selected to validate the applicability of the proposed approach under different conditions. The inversion results in the Manasi River Basin using the proposed approach, Singh algorithm, and modified Shi algorithm were compared. The results in the Manasi River Basin show that the correlation coefficients (Rs) between the measured and estimated dry snow density are 0.868, 0.694, and 0.653 for the three methods, respectively. The root mean square errors (RMSEs) are 31.1 kg m−3, 59.1 kg m−3, and 64.7 kg m−3, respectively, and the mean relative errors (MREs) are 12.9%, 21.9%, and 25.5%, respectively. The corresponding R, RMSE, and MRE in the Kelan River Basin using the proposed approach are 0.717, 57.2 kg m−3, and 27.1%, respectively. The results prove that the dry snow density under different C-band SAR data and different areas can be effectively retrieved using the proposed approach superior to the other two algorithms.

ALOS-2 L-band SAR backscatter data improves the estimation and temporal transferability of wildfire effects on soil properties under different post-fire vegetation responses

Remote sensing techniques are of particular interest for monitoring wildfire effects on soil properties, which may be highly context-dependent in large and heterogeneous burned landscapes. Despite the physical sense of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) backscatter data for characterizing soil spatial variability in burned areas, this approach remains completely unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of SAR backscatter data in C-band (Sentinel-1) and L-band (ALOS-2) for monitoring fire effects on soil organic carbon and nutrients (total nitrogen and available phosphorous) at short term in a heterogeneous Mediterranean landscape mosaic made of shrublands and forests that was affected by a large wildfire. The ability of SAR backscatter coefficients and several band transformations of both sensors for retrieving soil properties measured in the field in immediate post-fire situation (one month after fire) was tested through a model averaging approach. The temporal transferability of SAR-based models from one month to one year after wildfire was also evaluated, which allowed to assess short-term changes in soil properties at large scale as a function of pre-fire plant community type. The retrieval of soil properties in immediate post-fire conditions featured a higher overall fit and predictive capacity from ALOS-2 L-band SAR backscatter data than from Sentinel-1 C-band SAR data, with the absence of noticeable under and overestimation effects. The transferability of the ALOS-2 based model to one year after wildfire exhibited similar performance to that of the model calibration scenario (immediate post-fire conditions). Soil organic carbon and available phosphorous content was significantly higher one year after wildfire than immediately after the fire disturbance. Conversely, the short-term change in soil total nitrogen was ecosystem-dependent. Our results support the applicability of L-band SAR backscatter data for monitoring short-term variability of fire effects on soil properties, reducing data gathering costs within large and heterogeneous burned landscapes.

Water Body Mapping Using Long Time Series Sentinel-1 SAR Data in Poyang Lake

Mapping water bodies with a high accuracy is necessary for water resource assessment, and mapping them rapidly is necessary for flood monitoring. Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China, and its wetland is one of the most important in the world. Poyang Lake is affected by floods from the Yangtze River basin every year, and the fluctuation of the water area and water level directly or indirectly affects the ecological environment of Poyang Lake. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is particularly suitable for large-scale water body mapping, as SAR allows data acquisition regardless of illumination and weather conditions. The two-satellite Sentinel-1 constellation, providing C-Band SAR data, passes over the Poyang Lake about five times a month. With its high temporal-spatial resolution, the Sentinel-1 SAR data can be used to accurately monitor the water body. After acquiring all the Sentinel-1 (1A and 1B) SAR data, to ensure the consistency of data processing, we propose the use of a Python and SeNtinel Application Platform (SNAP)-based engine (SARProcMod) to process the data and construct a Poyang Lake Sentinel-1 SAR dataset with a 10 m resolution. To extract water body information from Sentinel-1 SAR data, we propose an automatic classification engine based on a modified U-Net convolutional neural network (WaterUNet), which classifies all data using artificial sample datasets with a high validation accuracy. The results show that the maximum and minimum water areas in our study area were 2714.08 km2 on 20 July 2020, and 634.44 km2 on 4 January 2020. Compared to the water level data from the Poyang gauging station, the water area was highly correlated with the water level, with the correlation coefficient being up to 0.92 and the R2 from quadratic polynomial fitting up to 0.88; thus, the resulting relationship results can be used to estimate the water area or water level of Poyang Lake. According to the results, we can conclude that Sentinel-1 SAR and WaterUNet are very suitable for water body monitoring as well as emergency flood mapping.

Improving Forest Above-Ground Biomass Retrieval Using Multi-Sensor L- and C- Band SAR Data and Multi-Temporal Spaceborne LiDAR Data

Due to the great structural and species diversity of tropical forests and limitations of the methods used to estimate aboveground biomass, there is uncertainty in quantifying its carbon sequestration potential. Measuring carbon sequestered in the terrestrial ecosystem and monitoring its dynamics is one of the key objectives in sustainable development goals. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has evolved as a key satellite technology in measuring and monitoring terrestrial carbon sink stored as biomass in plants. This study attempts to model forest above-ground biomass (AGB) using a random forest machine-learning approach where the predictor variables are from C-band (Radarsat-2), L-band (ALOS-2/PALSAR-2), and multi-temporal spaceborne LiDAR data from the GEDI platform. Training and validation data for the machine learning approach are obtained from the field measured inventory campaigns to evaluate the modeled forest biomass accuracies. The results show that variables from L-band (HH, HV), C-band (HV), and canopy height from the GEDI LiDAR platform performed effectively to model forest AGB with the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.81 and root mean squared error (rmse) of 19.35 Mg/ha (%rmse – 17.17). In the case of single frequency SAR data, the analysis shows that the model derived from the L-band SAR data and LiDAR performed comparably better than the combination of C-band SAR and LiDAR data with an R2 of 0.78 and rmse of 21.36 Mg/ha (%rmse – 18.94). The results, thus, demonstrate the potential of SAR data (both single frequency and multiple frequencies) in combination with GEDI LiDAR data in effectively modeling AGB over highly biodiverse tropical forest regions.

Seasonal snow cover classification based on SAR imagery and topographic data

ABSTRACT Melting snow is a sensitive indicator of regional climate change and snowmelt runoff. Optical remote sensing offers an effective tool to delineate the extent of snow cover, but its application is limited by sky conditions and illumination. In contrast, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has the advantages of high penetration and can obtain the bulk properties of snowpack, such as snow wetness, in addition to the snow-covered area (SCA). The widely used algorithm based on the multitemporal backscattering coefficient can delineate wet snow and further estimate dry snow cover by empirical rules. However, employing a fixed threshold on wet snow extraction and only considering altitude in dry snow estimation lead to the misclassification of snow cover. In this study, an algorithm was developed for dry and wet snow discrimination based on C-band dual-polarization SAR data. First, the adaptive threshold obtained by the Otsu thresholding method (OTSU) was implemented on the ratio image to improve wet snow extraction, and then topographic information, including elevation, slope and aspect, was added to further infer dry snow cover. Snow field observations were carried out in March 2021 and February 2017 to evaluate the effectiveness of the presented method in typical snow regions with different snowpack characteristics. Compared with using a single equation with a fixed threshold (57.9% and 56.5%, respectively), the overall accuracy of the novel approach in prairie and alpine snow areas was 84.2% and 73.9%, respectively. The results show that considering the adaptive threshold and topography offers superior performance in identifying dry and wet snow.

Integrating SAR and Optical Remote Sensing for Conservation-Targeted Wetlands Mapping

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) contains numerous depressional wetlands known as potholes that provide habitats for waterfowl and other wetland-dependent species. Mapping these wetlands is essential for identifying viable waterfowl habitat and conservation planning scenarios, yet it is a challenging task due to the small size of the potholes, and the presence of emergent vegetation. This study develops an open-source process within the Google Earth Engine platform for mapping the spatial distribution of wetlands through the integration of Sentinel-1 C-band SAR (synthetic aperture radar) data with high-resolution (10-m) Sentinel-2 bands. We used two machine-learning algorithms (random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM)) to identify wetlands across the study area through supervised classification of the multisensor composite. We trained the algorithms with ground truth data provided through field studies and aerial photography. The accuracy was assessed by comparing the predicted and actual wetland and non-wetland classes using statistical coefficients (overall accuracy, Kappa, sensitivity, and specificity). For this purpose, we used four different out-of-sample test subsets, including the same year, next year, small vegetated, and small non-vegetated test sets to evaluate the methods on different spatial and temporal scales. The results were also compared to Landsat-derived JRC surface water products, and the Sentinel-2-derived normalized difference water index (NDWI). The wetlands derived from the RF model (overall accuracy 0.76 to 0.95) yielded favorable results, and outperformed the SVM, NDWI, and JRC products in all four testing subsets. To provide a further characterization of the potholes, the water bodies were stratified based on the presence of emergent vegetation using Sentinel-2-derived NDVI, and, after excluding permanent water bodies, using the JRC surface water product. The algorithm presented in the study is scalable and can be adopted for identifying wetlands in other regions of the world.

Application of C-band sentinel-1A SAR data as proxies for detecting oil spills of Chennai, East Coast of India

This paper presents the utilization of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for monitoring and detection of oil spills. In this work, a case study of an oil spill has been investigated using C-band Sentinel-1A SAR data to detect the oil spill that occurred on 28 January 2017, near Ennore port, Chennai, India. Oil spill damages marine ecosystems causing serious environmental effects. Quite often, oil spills on the sea/ocean surface are seen nowadays, mainly in major shipping routes. They are caused due to tanker collisions, illegal discharge from the ships, etc. An oil spill can be monitored and detected using various platforms such as vessel-based, airborne-based and satellite-based. Vessel based and airborne methods are expensive with less area coverage. This process also consumes more time. For ocean applications such as oil spill and Ship detection, optical sensors cannot image during bad weather. As SAR is an active sensor, weather independent, and has cloud penetrating capability, the images can be acquired during the day as well as at night. Radar Remote Sensing (RRS) has rapidly gained popularity for monitoring and detection of oil spills and ships for more than a decade. With the availability of the satellite images, detection of oil spill has improved due to its wide coverage and less revisit time. The present paper gives an overview of the methodologies used to detect oil spills on the SAR images using dual-pol Sentinel-1A Level 1 SLC data. This work clearly demonstrates the preprocessing steps of the Sentinel 1A data for oil spill detection. The oil spill was only visible in the VV channel, therefore, for ocean application VV channel image is preferred. SEASAT was the first space-borne SAR mission launched in 1978 by NASA to observe sea surface. The preprocessing was carried out at the European Space Agency (ESA), the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) toolbox and Envi 5.1 toolbox. Based on the Sigma naught values, oil spill can be discriminated with the ocean surface. The results obtained with the VV channel are satisfactory and one could map out the oil spill very well. Supervised classifiers SVM and NN were applied on the boxcar filtered 3 × 3 VV channel image to delineate the oil spill. The result of oil spill detection mapping is validated with Supervised SVM and Neural Network classifiers. The results show there is a good agreement between oil spill mapping and classified image using SVM and NN classified images. The Overall Accuracy (OA) obtained using SVM classifier is 98.13% with kappa coefficient as 0.95 and using NN classifier is 98.11% with kappa coefficients 0.95. This technique is considered to be a potential proxy for the detection and monitoring of Oil spills on water bodies. Application of SAR data for oil spill detection is considered to be first of its kind from Indian coasts. This study aims to detect the oil spill occurred due to collision of two LPG tankers with Sentinel-1A SLC data in Chennai coast area.

Assessing Forest Type and Tree Species Classification Using Sentinel-1 C-Band SAR Data in Southern Sweden

The multitemporal acquisition of images from the Sentinel-1 satellites allows continuous monitoring of a forest. This study focuses on the use of multitemporal C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to assess the results for forest type (FTY), between coniferous and deciduous forest, and tree species (SPP) classification. We also investigated the temporal stability through the use of backscatter from multiple seasons and years of acquisition. SAR acquisitions were pre-processed, histogram-matched, smoothed, and temperature-corrected. The normalized average backscatter was extracted for interpreted plots and used to train Random Forest models. The classification results were then validated with field plots. A principal component analysis was tested to reduce the dimensionality of the explanatory variables, which generally improved the results. Overall, the FTY classifications were promising, with higher accuracies (OA of 0.94 and K = 0.86) than the SPP classification (OA of 0.66 and K = 0.54). The use of merely winter images (OA = 0.89) reached, on average, results that were almost as good as those using of images from the entire year. The use of images from a single winter season reached a similar result (OA = 0.87). We conclude that multiple Sentinel-1 images acquired in winter conditions are feasible to classify forest types in a hemi-boreal Swedish forest.

ALOS-2 and Sentinel-1 Backscattering Coefficients for Water and Flood Detection in Nakhon Phanom Province, Northeastern Thailand

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) plays an important role in disaster management, such as in flood area monitoring, as it can withstand severe weather or the rainy season. The main objective of this study was to investigate the potential of ALOS-2 (L-band) and Sentinel-1 (C-Band) SAR data for water and flood mapping. This study used ALOS-2 and Sentinel-1 to detect water areas from pre- and mid-flood events in Nakhon Phanom Province, Thailand. Water areas were determined via the thresholding method. The study assessed different polarizations of ALOS-2 (HH, HV) and Sentinel-1 (VH, VV) characteristics, as well as non-filtered and filtered images in the detection of water areas. Water extension detection from the optical sensor (Sentinel-2) was compared with SAR results. Water detection by ALOS-2 and Sentinel-1 images were independently observed with less cloud effect and showed good agreement with Sentinel-2. ALOS-2 HH demonstrated higher accuracy (92.46%) than ALOS-2 HV. Sentinel-1 VV provided the highest accuracy (95.45%) among all the results analyzed. The differences between L-band and C-band results accounted for 8.8% of the study area, with major differences appearing in the paddy fields. Water and flood detection by satellite images provided not only spatial information but also temporal dimensions. The results of this study can help inform decision-making in future flood mapping and disaster management.

Integration of L-Band Derived Soil Roughness into a Bare Soil Moisture Retrieval Approach from C-Band SAR Data

Surface soil moisture (SSM) is a key variable for many environmental studies, including hydrology and agriculture. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in the C-band are widely used nowadays to estimate SSM since the Sentinel-1 provides free-of-charge C-band SAR images at high spatial resolution with high revisit time, whereas the use of L-band is limited due to the low data availability. In this context, the main objective of this paper is to develop an operational approach for SSM estimation that mainly uses data in the C-band (Sentinel-1) with L-bands (ALOS/PALSAR) as additional data to improve SSM estimation accuracy. The approach is based on the use of the artificial neural networks (NNs) technique to firstly derive the soil roughness (Hrms) from the L-band (HH polarization) to then consider the L-band-derived Hrms and C-band SAR data (VV and VH polarizations) in the input vectors of NNs for SSM estimation. Thus, the Hrms estimated from the L-band at a given date is assumed to be constant for a given times series of C-band images. The NNs were trained and validated using synthetic and real databases. The results showed that the use of the L-band-derived Hrms in the input vector of NN in addition to C-band SAR data improved SSM estimation by decreasing the error (bias and RMSE), mainly for SSM values lower than 15 vol.% and regardless of Hrms values. Based on the synthetic database, the NNs that neglect the Hrms underestimate and overestimate the SSM (bias ranges between −8.0 and 4.0 vol.%) for Hrms values lower and higher than 1.5 cm, respectively. For Hrms &lt;1.5 cm and most SSM values higher than 10 vol.%, the use of Hrms as an input in the NNs decreases the underestimation of the SSM (bias ranges from −4.5 to 0 vol.%) and provides a more accurate estimation of the SSM with a decrease in the RMSE by approximately 2 vol.%. Moreover, for Hrms values between 1.5 and 2.0 cm, the overestimation of SSM slightly decreases (bias decreased by around 1.0 vol.%) without a significant improvement of the RMSE. In addition, for Hrms &gt;2.0 cm and SSM between 8 to 22 vol.%, the accuracy on the SSM estimation improved and the overestimation decreased by 2.2 vol.% (from 4.5 to 2.3 vol.%). From the real database, the use of Hrms estimated from the L-band brought a significant improvement of the SSM estimation accuracy. For in situ SSM less than 15 vol.%, the RMSE decreased by 1.5 and 2.2 vol.% and the bias by 1.2 and 2.6 vol.%, for Hrms values lower and higher than 1.5 cm, respectively.

Mapping potential signs of gas emissions in ice of Lake Neyto, Yamal, Russia, using synthetic aperture radar and multispectral remote sensing data

Abstract. Regions of anomalously low backscatter in C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery of lake ice of Lake Neyto in northwestern Siberia have been suggested to be caused by emissions of gas (methane from hydrocarbon reservoirs) through the lake’s sediments. However, to assess this connection, only analyses of data from boreholes in the vicinity of Lake Neyto and visual comparisons to medium-resolution optical imagery have been provided due to a lack of in situ observations of the lake ice itself. These observations are impeded due to accessibility and safety issues. Geospatial analyses and innovative combinations of satellite data sources are therefore proposed to advance our understanding of this phenomenon. In this study, we assess the nature of the backscatter anomalies in Sentinel-1 C-band SAR images in combination with very high resolution (VHR) WorldView-2 optical imagery. We present methods to automatically map backscatter anomaly regions from the C-band SAR data (40 m pixel spacing) and holes in lake ice from the VHR data (0.5 m pixel spacing) and examine their spatial relationships. The reliability of the SAR method is evaluated through comparison between different acquisition modes. The results show that the majority of mapped holes (71 %) in the VHR data are clearly related to anomalies in SAR imagery acquired a few days earlier, and similarities to SAR imagery acquired more than a month before are evident, supporting the hypothesis that anomalies may be related to gas emissions. Further, a significant expansion of backscatter anomaly regions in spring is documented and quantified in all analysed years 2015 to 2019. Our study suggests that the backscatter anomalies might be caused by lake ice subsidence and consequent flooding through the holes over the ice top leading to wetting and/or slushing of the snow around the holes, which might also explain outcomes of polarimetric analyses of auxiliary L-band Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (PALSAR-2) data. C-band SAR data are considered to be valuable for the identification of lakes showing similar phenomena across larger areas in the Arctic in future studies.

Detecting tropical selective logging with C-band SAR data may require a time series approach

Selective logging is the primary driver of forest degradation in the tropics and reduces the capacity of forests to harbour biodiversity, maintain key ecosystem processes, sequester carbon, and support human livelihoods. While the preceding decade has seen a tremendous improvement in the ability to monitor forest disturbances from space, large-scale (spatial and temporal) forest monitoring systems have almost universally relied on optical satellite data from the Landsat program, whose effectiveness is limited in tropical regions with frequent cloud cover. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data can penetrate clouds and have been utilized in forest mapping applications since the early 1990s, but only recently has SAR data been widely available on a scale sufficient to facilitate pan-tropical selective logging detection systems. Here, a detailed selective logging dataset from three lowland tropical forest regions in the Brazilian Amazon was used to assess the effectiveness of SAR data from Sentinel-1, RADARSAT-2, and Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 Phased Arrayed L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (ALOS-2 PALSAR-2) for monitoring tropical selective logging. We built Random Forests models aimed at classifying pixel-based differences between logged and unlogged areas. In addition, we used the Breaks For Additive Season and Trend (BFAST) algorithm to assess if a dense time series of Sentinel-1 imagery displayed recognizable shifts in pixel values after selective logging. In general, Random Forests classification with SAR data (Sentinel-1, RADARSAT-2, and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2) performed poorly, having high commission and omission errors for logged observations. This suggests little to no difference in pixel-based metrics between logged and unlogged areas for these sensors, particularly at lower logging intensities. In contrast, the Sentinel-1 time series analyses indicated that areas under higher intensity selective logging (> 20 m3 ha−1) show a distinct spike in the number of pixels that included a breakpoint during the logging season. BFAST detected breakpoints in 50% of logged pixels and exhibited a false alarm rate of approximately <5% in unlogged forest. Overall our results suggest that SAR data can be used in time series analyses to detect tropical selective logging at high intensity logging locations (> 20 m3 ha−1) within the Amazon.
