Strategic Management and Business Ecosystem Scientific Relations—Key Areas Review

This study explores the interaction between the business ecosystem and strategic management. This research is driven by the necessity of understanding how the principles of the business ecosystem influence organizational strategic management. A Systematic Literature Review was carried out, focusing on a detailed analysis of articles indexed in the Scopus academic database. The research procedure aimed to uncover emerging perspectives on strategic management and the development of business ecosystems. The findings reveal a substantial gap in research regarding business ecosystems and sustainable strategic management. The paper suggests a new research agenda and proposes novel pathways for future investigations in this field.

Diversification Strategy and Business Portfolio Development in State-Owned Companies PT. Hutama Karya

This research aims to analyse the business diversification strategy of PT Hutama Karya (Persero) and its subsidiaries, explain their business operations, and explore growth potential. This research tries to identify the company's internal and external environmental factors after business diversification, conduct an analysis of the corporate position and portfolio of business units and subsidiaries, and formulate a new business diversification strategy concept. This research method is descriptive qualitative with the data used in the research including primary data collected through interviews and questionnaires, as well as secondary data such as company financial reports, industry performance reports, and industry attractiveness. PT Hutama Karya's business diversification includes expansion into various business divisions, including Toll Road Business Entity (BUJT), Non-Toll Road Business Entity (Non-BUJT), and the establishment of subsidiaries such as Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI), HAKAAston, HK Realtindo, Hutama Marga Waskita (HAMAWAS), and EPC Energy Singapore Ltd. The main supporting factors for this diversification are the continued economic growth and government support in infrastructure development. The company's internal strengths are the application of technology and adaptation to changes in the construction industry, they also face challenges such as cashflow issues, global economic uncertainty, and changes in political direction. The SWOT analysis shows that the company is in the "Grow and Build" quadrant and needs to pursue aggressive business diversification. The results of the GE Nine Cell Matrix analysis show a diverse position for the company's business units, with some as "Leaders" and others needing to be managed carefully or even divested. The managerial implications of this study are the need for business ecosystem development and business portfolio diversification, technology development across businesses to support competitive advantage, and the creation of new opportunities after the completion of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road project

Relating the strategic role of technology orientation in organizational TQM performance

The importance of incorporating cutting-edge technological strategies to support business ecosystem development is growing across industries. By examining the relationship between organisational Total Quality Management (TQM) performance and the indicators of technology orientation, this study aims to fill the knowledge gap caused by insufficient empirical research on the characteristics of technology orientation. This study evaluates a unique conceptual framework using survey data from 254 IT manufacturing companies in India, utilising a two-staged structural equation modelling and artificial neural network methodology. The study developed hypotheses on TQM organisational performance through the literature on technology orientation to determine the correlations between these indicators. The findings highlight how enterprises that commit to adopting new technologies can enhance technological innovation to become more resourceful and creative and increase organisational TQM performance. The sensitivity analysis results showed that technology adoption significantly impacts organisational TQM performance. The novelty of this study contributes to the literature on organisation TQM performance by providing a deeper understanding of relevant technology orientation indicators and how organisations should use them to achieve superior performance. The results show that technology acceptance strategy, capability, infrastructure, innovation, and adoption benefit organisational TQM performance.

Increasing the competitiveness of business ecosystems by identifying the social values of the regional community

The focus of the article is on the formation and use by the participants of business ecosystems of new approaches to increase their competitiveness. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the complex of creative factors to increase the competitiveness of business ecosystems. The motivation for the research is to improve the quality of goods and services for consumers by examining the structural elements of business ecosystems as innovative participants in the economy. The design and methods of research include a logical sequence of presentation of the material on the basis of a questionnaire. To achieve this goal, within the framework of the theoretical component, we analyzed relevant conceptual and empirical articles, as well as information obtained as a result of large-scale empirical studies of the conditions of ecosystem development and changes in consumer values. The main conclusions are that the intensification of competition in the market due to the emergence of new economic agents in the form of business ecosystems, causes the need to search for creative factors of competitiveness. Such, in our opinion, are the social values of the members of modern society, formed under the influence of the leading trends in consumer behavior. The practical and managerial implications of the study are to increase the level of competitiveness of participants in business ecosystems functioning to increase the level of consumer satisfaction. As a result of studying and synchronizing the social values of the modern regional community, the actual values of potential consumers have been identified, which allows us to form a strategy for the development of business ecosystems, taking into account the result obtained.

Digital transformation as a driver for business ecosystem development

The business ecosystem today is a strategic priority for big business in various industry markets. The empirical experience of this business model from the point of view of history is small, but it is of great scientific and practical interest, since such experience is objective today and promising in terms of the future digital transformation of the economy. The purpose of this work is to study the theory and practice of the formation of business ecosystems in their diversity and evolution, as well as to assess the prospects for further development of this business model in the context of digitalization and the introduction of artificial intelligence into cognitive business processes (taking into account not only economic, but also natural scientific laws of development). The results obtained made it possible to formulate the genetic features of future business ecosystems and the transformation of their participants into the format of a quasi-living organization.

Особливості розвитку бізнес-екосистеми в умовах цифрової трансформації економіки

At work, the results of research by foreign scholars in the field of business ecosystems and digital platforms have been summarized. The evolution of the construction of business structures/ecosystems has been systematized. Strategic models of digital society transformation have been analyzed, specifically: the model of an economy "driven by technology" and the model of an economy "driven by the market." The main drivers of business ecosystem development in the context of digital transformation have been considered. The forms of functioning of business ecosystems in centralized and adaptive ecosystem conditions have been analyzed, highlighting differences based on criteria such as structure, partners, goals, conditions of use, strategic focus, relationship management, and impact on the central company. Distinctions between digital ecosystems and traditional business alliances, particularly clusters, have been outlined. The most relevant risks associated with ecosystem functioning have been discussed, including tax risk, strategic risk, business risk, compliance risk, technological risk, cyber risk, and reputational risk. The significance of customer experience in the functioning of a business ecosystem has been substantiated.

Features of Network Relationships in Business Ecosystems

This research is devoted to the investigation of issues concerning widespread integration into business communities in order to achieve common goals. This integration is the result of society’s evolving requirements, which need a sustainable solution in the 21st century.Organizations alone cannot create advanced solutions in modern times, so legally independent “equal” participants band together to solve common goals in order to improve the overall competitiveness of the business ecosystem.Management theory provides a large arena for thought on the management of distinct non-hierarchical connections between partners in business ecosystems. Launching innovations are needed on shifting the paradigm of competition, reworking the principles of generating partnerships, switching to process management, and, in general, constructing organizational mechanisms in “non-organizational forms”.The study focuses on the difficulties of nonlinear connection construction and maintenance in nonhierarchical organizations with multilateral interactions, stages of business ecosystem growth, and fundamental principles of business ecosystem development and creation.

Ecosystem of tourist business in the context of regional tourism and hospitality industry development

The evolution and problems of the definition of such notions as “business ecosystem”, “business ecosystem model” and “business platform” in the scientific environment are overviewed and analyzed in this paper. Different strategies of the management of business ecosystem models are considered and conclusions about their efficiency at different development stages are formulated. In the paper, the particular attention is paid to digital platforms as a tool of management and development of business ecosystems in modern realities, the key cases of ecosystem business models in Russian economy are analyzed. The authors consider the digital platform creation as a perspective approach to the transition to the concept “Tourism 4.0” in the Republic of Bashkortostan. However, there are different opinions regarding the practicability of the realization of regional tourist platforms in comparison with the federal ones. The paper presents the overview of the main arguments of the parties of this discussion. As a result of the conducted research, the author formulated the conclusions on the perspective of creating cross-functional and multi-platform solutions for the realization of federal and regional platforms. That is, the construction of platforms based on the principle of mutual integration and realization of different but supporting functions, which would serve the whole chain of creation, promotion and realization of tourist product and realization of accompanying touristic services, will allow implementing not the competitive development environment but the ecosystem cooperation environment. Such principle is relevant from the point of the broad-scale and deep mechanism of data aggregation, for building up effective development strategies at entrepreneurial, regional and federal levels.

Business ecosystem sustainability management

The article is devoted to the issues of the sustainable development of such a representative of the ecosystem as a special economic zone. The subject of the study is the organizational interactions that arise between resident companies, clusters within the technopolis and the management company. The conducted research is aimed at determining the criteria for the expediency of selecting participants in the ecosystem, identifying indicators for assessing the effectiveness of their joint functioning. The objectives of the study were to identify key trends in the formation of business ecosystems; to formulate the principles of managing the sustainability of the ecosystem, to determine the levels of sustainability and indicators for measuring it. The methodology of scientific research is based on the assessment of the digital maturity of business processes, the theory of interaction between organizations and the platform approach. Statistical processing methods of reports on management companies, grouping and rating the attractiveness of technoparks for investors were used during the study. The article formulates the principles of sustainability of the business ecosystem, defines the levels and indicators for their assessment. The results of the study are addressed to employees of management companies of special economic zones, heads of executive authorities responsible for the development of industrial policy. The development of research in the field of sustainable development of business ecosystems is related to the consideration of information security issues for agents of the digital economy.

СТАРТАПИ В БІЗНЕС-ЕКОСИСТЕМІ: ТЕОРЕТИЧНИЙ ТА ПРАКТИЧНИЙ АСПЕКТИ

The modern economy forms new global trends in production and consumption, markets and business, however, the formation of a global ecosystem based on start-ups has become a significant trend. Therefore, the development of startups in business ecosystems should be considered both from a theoretical and practical point of view. The purpose of the article is to study the theoretical and practical aspects of the development of startups in Ukraine in the context of the functioning of business ecosystems. The object of research is startups in the context of the functioning of business ecosystems. Methods used in the study: systematization and generalization, comparative and monographic analysis, detailing, coherence. The hypothesis of the study was the assumption that start-ups are the backbone of the business ecosystem, and it is advisable to provide support to start-ups through the subjects of their life support - various environmental agents and institutions. Presentation of the main material: according to the results of studies of the theoretical and practical aspects of the problems of development of startups in Ukraine in the context of the functioning of business ecosystems, it has been established that there is still a discussion on determining the essence of a business ecosystem, but startups are the system-forming beginning. Two main types of ecosystems and components of business ecosystems with appropriate coherence are identified. The advantages, disadvantages and general characteristics of business ecosystems are determined, which made it possible to characterize the modern Ukrainian startup market. It has been established that it is advisable to provide support to start-ups through the subjects of their life support, that is, various environmental agents and institutions. The originality and practical significance of the study lies in establishing the coherence of the components (terms) of the business ecosystem and the conclusion about the need for assistance for the development of business ecosystems from the state. Conclusions and prospects for further research. Studies of the theoretical and practical aspects of the problems of development of startups in the context of the functioning of business ecosystems made it possible to draw a conclusion about the system-forming beginning of startups and about the constituent business ecosystems that have coherence. It has been determined that there are two main types of ecosystems that have advantages, disadvantages and corresponding characteristics that affect the characteristics of the modern startup market in Ukraine. An analysis of the obstacles in the development of startups in Ukraine made it possible to focus on the need to support startups from the state. It is advisable to provide assistance to the subjects of life support of business ecosystems - various environmental agents and institutions. Further research should be carried out taking into account the social aspect of the functioning of business ecosystems to implement the principles of sustainable development.

Risk Management as a Tool in the Development of Socio-Economic Ecosystems

The main problems of sustainable development of business ecosystems are considered. It is proved that promising business ecosystems need to master and use modern, including digital, technologies in managing the level of risk. The purpose of this study is to expand the types of tools that can be used to manage the risk level of failure to achieve sustainable development of business ecosystems. To study the problems of risk management and identify the characteristics of the risk phenomenon in the activities of business ecosystems, the methodology and applied tools of the system economic theory and the operational theory of risk management are used. It is shown that the management of risk of harm to the environment, in the social sphere, and development of anti-risk impacts, reducing the level of risk of not achieving the necessary quality of management, improve the investment attractiveness of economic agents, members of the business ecosystem. The realization research may be of interest to enterprises and organizations that are developing their own strategies for sustainable development within the framework of emerging business ecosystems, or developing their own strategy for choosing and joining some hypothetical business ecosystem.

Courtship for business model innovation: Early stage value negotiation for the sustainability of smart homes

The research contributes to business models for sustainability (BMfS) literature with insights into the role of value negotiations in the design-implementation gap of collaborative business model innovation. It looks at the phenomenon of so-called courtship in the early formation of collaboration for business model innovation; wherein organizations contest justifications for smart home business partnerships based on orders of worth, including that of sustainability as a ‘green’ order of worth. It considers the case of the VELUX Group with the release of their smart home device VELUX Active and the development of business ecosystems from the remote-control wireless devices of 2005 to the smart home groupings of 2020 to better understand why there is not more widespread implementation of business models designed for sustainability. The research finds that although a green order of worth, representing sustainability value, may be frequently argued, that market and industrial orders of worth have demonstrated greater maturity in arguments and value reframing that determine the basis of smart home collaborations. Further, it supports a growing body of research suggesting that business model innovation processes are experimental and gradual, and that iterative structural prototypes and piloting of sustainability activities can potentially bridge the design-implementation gap.

Bringing ecosystem thinking to sustainability-driven wooden construction business

Lowering environmental impacts by material choices is proposed as a way to promote urban sustainability transition, and one solution is building more wooden multi-storey constructions (WMCs). In the construction industry, however, there is a strong path dependency towards applying well-established construction materials and methods, as well as partnerships. To gain understanding of network-based collaboration, learning and end-user involvement in novel wooden construction business, the study uses qualitative methods and employs business ecosystem approach in the analysis. The studied WMC business case revealed that barriers of collaborative business ecosystem development include both the lack of clarity in the shared goals between actors and weak end-user involvement. Moreover, neither companies nor end-users fully recognize sustainability aspects around WMC. Enabling factors such as smooth communication and building trust among business actors during planning and building were recognised. The study suggests that a broader business ecosystem approach, including the living and use of the building, offers a mindset shift for developing sustainability-driven logic alongside profitable construction business and creating value for consumers.

Business ecosystems of Russia and China in border territories.

Annotation. Systematic and interdisciplinary approaches, as a methodology of ecosystem theory, make it possible to generate the main ecosystem factors of the Russian and Chinese business in border territories. On the basis of the analysis, the authors of the study formulate the main directions of the business ecosystem development of the border territories between Russia and China.

Firms of Endearment: Organizational Imprinting in Business Ecosystems

Business ecosystems have been advanced as an analytical lens for studying multilateral arrangements of firms that span industries and in which the boundaries between competition and collaboration are unclear. A key construct in the ecosystem literature is the complementor. These are firms that, while not formally connected to a focal firm, provide services that are necessary for the focal firm’s value to be realized by consumers. While the literature has emphasized the tensions faced by a focal firm as it attempts to align the efforts of its complementors to its value proposition, however, these studies have tended to take a static view of this phenomenon: they haven’t considered how a focal firm’s past decisions of which complementor firms to engage impact their ability to engage with successive complementors in the future. Moreover, the literature on ecosystems has viewed complementors as fungible. As a result, we still lack an understanding of how a focal firm’s choices of complementors over time impact the evolution of an ecosystem. This paper contributes to the ecosystems literature by building theory that foregrounds the role of complementors in the development of business ecosystems and by responding to calls for an inter-temporal perspective on ecosystem evolution.

Identifying the role of business accelerators in the developing business ecosystem: the life science sector

PurposeBusiness accelerators have recently received increasing attention as important cogs in business ecosystem development. However, their exact role in the ecosystem is not yet well known, especially outside the IT sector. The purpose of this study is, therefore, twofold: to determine the position of life science accelerators in the business ecosystem and the attributes of support for companies and to identify key features of the life science accelerators that contribute to the change in business ecosystems.Design/methodology/approachThe authors offer an exploratory case study of five life science business accelerators and analyze the main factors affecting the companies and the whole business ecosystem. The authors build upon the scarce literature on business accelerators and consider a new type of accelerator that specializes in life science projects and study its role in the transformation and evolution of the life science industry.FindingsThe authors have defined the role and key parameters of life science accelerators that influence the existing business ecosystems: (1) cooperation with other regions and countries, (2) development of entrepreneurial skills among participants of the business accelerators program and (3) a project on demand-based approach.Originality/valueThe key parameters of the life science accelerators allow to concentrate these efforts on the activities that are most demanded by the market. Business accelerators can increase the created value for other program participants.

Coronavirus and tourism

In the previous decade, the Russian tourism industry has shown steady development. But in 2020, due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation is close to disaster. It is necessary to provide not only urgent support for industry actors but also the conditions for the successful resumption of their activities in the long term. The pandemic raised the question of joint survival – both literally and figuratively. The tourism industry is a good example to understand that it is possible either to bring the situation to a complete catastrophe or to provide a relatively good start for recovery in the foreseeable future. It all depends on how market actors behave and what decisions will be made by the state. For market actors, it is important to understand that the successful development of business ecosystems involves not only competition but also mutual assistance, which is extremely important for the progressive development of any industry, especially in times of crisis. For the authorities, it is important to understand that tourism may turn out to be not a burden, but one of the engines of economic recovery if taxation is changed and the focus is on supporting domestic and inbound tourism.

FUNCTIONAL DECOMPOSITION OF SPATIAL BUSINESS ECOSYSTEMS

The purpose of the article is functional decomposition of the main stages of the algorithm of providing strategic management of business ecosystem development. It is determined that it includes the assessment of the resource potential of the territory; defining its core competencies; locomotive industries, industries and spheres of management; creation of drivers of development of spatial systems; formation of points and zones of economic growth; cross-sectoral redistribution of investment flows, internal balancing of territorial development; creating a system of sustainable finance and ensuring system-wide sustainability of territorial formation. An appropriate scheme of sequential decomposition of the business ecosystem is proposed. The functional role of the natural resource space as a source of production, raw material, energy resources and the basis for the organization of business ecosystems have been determined here. The role of key competences for the functioning of a sustainable competitive economy has been determined also. The leading role of economic drivers and locomotive industries, which are able to build powerful chains of production, supply and sale in ensuring the sustainable development of business ecosystems, has been established. Also there is established the need to create growth points as spatially-localized territorial-economic entities, wich are provided with the necessary growth drivers and focused on the production of locomotive industries. The functional role of the sustainable finance system in the extraction, redistribution, accumulation and capitalization of rental income from environmental management is characterized.

Methodological Tools to Measure the State of Regional Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

At present, the development of entrepreneurship is a priority task of social and economic development of Russia. The observed rates of socio-economic and innovative development of regions indicate that the private business initiative is not sufficiently developed. At the same time, the private business initiative is the leading driver of economic renewal of the territories. As practice shows, current measures, aimed at stimulating entrepreneurship, do not provide the growth of business activity and seem insufficient. These measures do not consider specific spatial context in which the business develops. Therefore, these reasons significantly reduce the effectiveness of these stimulating measures. In this regard, we estimate that the environment in which the elements of the system interact is gaining a great importance in the framework of a system approach to the study of the entrepreneurship development at the regional level. In practice, to manage the development of business structures in a spatial context, the ecosystem approach seems to be very promising. This approach takes into account the nature of the interactions of economic agents and their relationship with the environment. We highlight that the ecosystem approach to entrepreneurship is a transition from a traditional economic view of entrepreneurship, which is market-oriented to a new economic view that emphasizes people, networks and institutions. We substantiate that it is necessary to develop a methodological toolkit for monitoring the attractiveness of a regional entrepreneurial ecosystem for the generation and development of entrepreneurial processes. It is being an important element of the mechanism for designing and managing the development of business ecosystems. To determine the current state of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in a region, we have proposed a methodology for monitoring the state of the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem. This method is based on a statistical analysis of the demographic quantitative and qualitative indicators characterizing the intensity of the development and extinction of entrepreneurial processes. As a result, we have expanded the concept of the ecosystem approach. Furthermore, we have justified its application for the investigation of entrepreneurial processes at the regional level. To study the current state of regional entrepreneurial ecosystems, we suggest to use a special statistical apparatus. This apparatus is based on demographic indicators characterizing the viability and growth potential of entrepreneurial structures in a specific spatial context. To further develop the ecosystem approach for the study of entrepreneurship at the regional level, there is an urgent need for further research that will allow to identify and understand the patterns of the development of entrepreneurial ecosystems. It will increase the effectiveness of practical measures for designing a mechanism for managing the development of regional entrepreneurship.

Key challenges of digital business ecosystem development and how to cope with them

Elaborating on a theoretical outline of digital business ecosystems, the paper describes key challenges in terms of interoperability and actor-related issues. By comparing two scenarios – one from China and one from Germany – different ways to cope with these challenges can be illustrated. The case from China demonstrates a top-down development with a strong focus on interoperability but obstacles remain for the further co-evolution of partners. By contrast, the German scenario outlines the design for a decentralized bottom-up approach according to specific solutions. In this example, distributed competences among partners and a clear customer focus become visible, but a missing technological platform is a severe hindering factor. In summary it reveals that both, the top-down and the bottom-up scenario, show significant benefits for digital business ecosystems. Based on these findings, we see high value in conceptualizing an integrative framework designed to utilize the benefits of both approaches for context-specific advancements of business ecosystems. Therefore, we introduce a laboratory concept for designing, exploring and further testing situated measures and enablers that contribute to the context-specific evolution of ecosystems.
