The perception of burnout and related influencing factors in Tunisian oncology nurses.

Oncology nurses constantly provide emotional support to patients and are confronted with their suffering, which represents chronic stress leading to the development of burnout syndrome. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of burnout and identify associated factors in a sample of oncology nurses. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study with 70 oncology nurses at the Salah Azaiez Institute of Oncology in Tunisia. Burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Service Survey. This study follows the STrengthening the Reporting of OBservational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) Guidelines. Burnout affected 60 nurses (85.7%), with a high level in 20% of cases. High scores of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and low personal accomplishment were recorded in 65.7%, 50%and 25.7% respectively. Emotional exhaustion was associated with higher age, marital status, having 2 or 3 or more dependent children, number of patients under care exceeding 15, professional experience and history of psychiatric problems. Depersonalisation was correlated with age, marital status, professional grade and history of psychiatric problems. Low levels of personal accomplishment increased with the number of patients under care, history of psychiatric problems and the regret of professional choice. Burn-out is a reality in oncology hospital with an alarming rate. Interventions including rationalisation of workload, support groups, training in emotion and stress management would improve the mental health of these nurses and increase their performance. The screening for burnout should be included as a regular practice in health promotion programmes for oncology health professionals, particularly for a vulnerable subgroup that possesses the risk mentioned above factors.

Relationship between fear of COVID-19 and mental health of Chinese nurses: The mediating effects of psychological capital and burnout.

The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between fear of COVID-19 and mental health of nurses and the effects of psychological capital and burnout in this relation. A cross-sectional study. The online surveys were conducted among mainland Chinese nurses. Participants (n = 445; average age 32.89 ± 6.76 years) completed an online-questionnaire based on the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, the Psychological Capital Scale, Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for Medical Professionals Scale and the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey. Data analysis was conducted by Pearson's correlation analysis, Harman single-factor test and the bootstrap method for mediating effect testing. (1) The study demonstrated a significant direct effect of fear of COVID-19 on nurses' mental health, as well as on mediating factors such as burnout and psychological capital. (2) Regression analyses confirmed that while psychological capital bolstered mental health, burnout undermined it, with fear of COVID-19 further imposing a negative influence. (3) Fear of COVID-19 exerted an effect on the mental health of nurses by the independent and chain intermediary functions of psychological capital and burnout, resulting in a total mediating effect of -0.233.

Stress and Burnout among Medical Specialists in Romania: A Comparative Study of Clinical and Surgical Physicians.

This study, which focuses on 227 participants (196 females and 31 males) comprising 187 clinical specialists and 40 surgical physicians, examines the prevalence of burnout in medical specialists. We investigate the effects of the emotional exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (D), and personal accomplishment (PA) dimensions on professional satisfaction and plans to change careers using the modified licensed Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS (MP)). High emotional exhaustion is reported by 52.63% of men and 71.28% of women in the clinical medicine group (n = 188). In the surgical specialties (n = 39), scores are significantly higher, with 75% of men and 77.77% of women reporting EE. In our sample group, 71.36% express high levels of emotional exhaustion, with similar patterns across specialization and gender. Clinical medicine respondents report high degrees of depersonalization in 33.13% of females and 21.05% of males, while surgical specialty respondents report high levels in 33.33% of females and 50% of males. Across genders and specializations, 33.03% of all respondents show high levels of depersonalization. Clinical medicine participants report high levels of personal accomplishment (42.60% of females and 42.10% of males), whereas surgical specialties report 44.44% of females and 66.66% of male on the PA dimension. Of the total number of respondents, 44.05% report having a high level of personal accomplishment; differences exist depending on specialty and gender. In addition, questions regarding professional fulfilment and intention to change careers were presented to the participants. A total of 53.40% (16 male and 105 female) of the clinical medicine respondents said they intended to change careers, while 33 participants (9 male, 34 female) doubted if they would remain in the same specialization. Furthermore, 86 individuals (9 male and 77 female) in the surgical specialties said they would never choose to work in healthcare again. Regression analysis suggests that being male, higher in age, and working in surgical specialties with lower job satisfaction and a higher intention to change profession are associated with higher levels of EE. Age and work satisfaction are significant predictors of depersonalization, and higher career satisfaction is associated with increased levels of PA.

Research on risk factors for doctor burnout during COVID-19 epidemic

Burnout, recognized as a syndrome linked to chronic workplace stress by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a prevalent issue across various professions, irrespective of title or rank. Identifying exhaustion indicators and implementing preventive or corrective measures are vital to mitigate long-term adverse impacts on quality of life. Utilizing the "Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS)" through online analysis, this study aimed to establish the frequency of Burnout Syndrome (BOS) within the target population. The risk of BOS development doubled when participants financed their endeavors and faced abuse from patients' family members, while decreasing with participants' average age. Female gender correlated with higher emotional fatigue, and male gender predicted depersonalization (DP). Infection with or death from COVID-19 among coworkers or family members associated with elevated Employee Engagement (EE) and diminished Personal Accomplishment (PA). The COVID-19 epidemic introduced additional elements contributing to BOS, prompting measures such as providing psychological support, organizing working hours, adjusting pay, supplying personal protective equipment, and offering instruction on safety measures.

STUDI KORELASIONAL SPIRITUALITAS DAN BURNOUT SYNDROME PERAWAT RUANG INTENSIF SELAMA PANDEMI COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has put extraordinary pressure on medical personnel, especially nurses who work in critical wards. They are faced with high health-related risks as well as constant psychological stress. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the level of spirituality of nurses and the level of burnout syndrome they experience during the pandemic. This research was conducted using a survey method and data collection through questionnaires (SWBS (Spiritual Well Being Scale) and MBI-HSS (Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Service Survey)) which were given to 55 nurses who work in critical rooms selected using total sampling techniques. Research data was analyzed using Chi-square with Fisher's Exact Test. The research results showed that almost all nurses had a high level of spirituality (85.5%) and the majority of nurses did not experience burnout syndrome (60.0%). The calculated statistical value obtained a sig (2-tiled) value of 0.007 (p<0.05) meaning that there is a significant relationship between the level of spirituality of nurses and the level of burnout syndrome they experience. Nurses with higher levels of spirituality tend to experience lower levels of burnout. This indicates that aspects of spirituality, such as strong beliefs and regular spiritual practices, act as protective factors in reducing the risk of burnout syndrome. Apart from that, it is also important to include a holistic approach that pays attention to spiritual aspects in care and support for nurses during pandemics and other critical situations.

Role stress, occupational burnout and depression among emergency nurses: A cross-sectional study

BackgroundEmergency nurses are a professional group at a high risk of burnout and depression. This may influence their mental state and physical health. AimsThe aim of the study was to explore the relationship between role stress, occupational burnout and depression among emergency nurses. MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried out among 295 emergency nurses from eight tertiary hospitals in western China. The Role Stress Scale, the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale were employed. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed. ResultsOf the study participants, 54.6% were found to have depressive symptoms and 48.1% had severe occupational burnout. Positive correlations were observed between the scores of role stress and burnout and depression. Approximately 37.1% of the variation in depression was explained by the components of occupational burnout. ConclusionsEmergency nurses experience high levels of role stress, occupational burnout and depression. Preventive approaches to role stress, burnout and depression are needed to improve their psychological condition and quality of work life.

U.S. Attending Anesthesiologist Burnout in the Postpandemic Era.

Anesthesiologists are experiencing unprecedented levels of workplace stress and staffing shortages. This analysis aims to assess how U.S. attending anesthesiologist burnout changed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and target well-being efforts. The authors surveyed the American Society of Anesthesiologists' U.S. attending anesthesiologist members in November 2022. Burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey with additional questions relating to workplace and demographic factors. Burnout was categorized as high risk for burnout (exhibiting emotional exhaustion and/or depersonalization) or burnout syndrome (demonstrating all three burnout dimensions concurrently). The association of burnout with U.S. attending anesthesiologist retention plans was analyzed, and associated factors were identified. Of 24,680 individuals contacted, 2,698 (10.9%) completed the survey, with 67.7% (1,827 of 2,698) at high risk for burnout and 18.9% (510 of 2,698) with burnout syndrome. Most (78.4%, n = 2,115) respondents have experienced recent staffing shortages, and many (36.0%, n = 970) were likely to leave their job within the next 2 yr. Those likely to leave their job in the next 2 yr had higher prevalence of high risk for burnout (78.5% [760 of 970] vs. 55.7% [651 of 1,169], P < 0.001) and burnout syndrome (24.3% [236 of 970] vs. 13.3% [156 of 1,169], P < 0.001) compared to those unlikely to leave. On multivariable analysis, perceived lack of support at work (odds ratio, 9.2; 95% CI, 7.0 to 12.1), and staffing shortages (odds ratio, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.57 to 2.43) were most strongly associated with high risk for burnout. Perceived lack of support at work (odds ratio, 6.3; 95% CI, 3.81 to 10.4) was the factor most strongly associated with burnout syndrome. Burnout is more prevalent in anesthesiology since early 2020, with workplace factors of perceived support and staffing being the predominant associated variables. Interventions focused on the drivers of burnout are needed to improve well-being among U.S. attending anesthesiologists.

Workplace wellbeing among health care workers providing HIV services in primary care in Johannesburg: a mixed methods study.

Burnout among Health Care workers (HCWs) impacts on provider-patient relations and quality of care. Anova Health Institute (Anova) is a large South African non-profit organization and PEPFAR/USAID implementing partner. We conducted a study among HCWs providing HIV-related services in primary care settings in Johannesburg, South Africa, to examine levels of burnout, understand factors affecting workplace wellbeing, and explore strategies to prevent burnout. We used a sequential mixed-method approach. Data were collected between February and April 2022. The first phase consisted of a survey using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) to measure levels of burnout. We then interviewed a subset of survey participants to understand the experiences that may affect wellbeing. We used descriptive statistics to quantify burnout rates for each MBI dimension (emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization). Qualitative data analysis was guided by the Job Demands-Resources Framework that explores the interactions between demands and resources in the workplace. Survey findings (n = 194) revealed that although depersonalization rates were low at 6%, 21% of participants had high emotional exhaustion and 24% reported low professional accomplishment. Less than half (41%, n = 80) had scores in the high category for any one of the three MBI-HSS dimensions. The MBI-HSS dimensions differed significantly by type of work and job title. Roving positions (HCW working in more than one health facility) were more likely to experience higher emotional exhaustion and lower professional accomplishment. Qualitative findings (n = 25) indicate that a number of job demands, including high workload, inadequate mental health support, and challenging relationships with stakeholders, had a negative effect on HCWs' wellbeing. However, finding meaningfulness in their work, working as a team, and practicing autonomy were experienced as resources that reduced the negative effect of these demands. While measured burnout syndrome rates were low, various experiences negatively impacted at least one in five HCW. We identified key resources that provided buffering against workplace stressors. We recommend that as well as addressing key drivers of burnout, access to these resources should be fostered, for example by strengthening interventions that offer recognition, and promoting team interactions through social activities and support groups.

Burnout study during the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand: psychometric evaluation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel

ABSTRACT Objectives This study aimed (1) to determine the psychometric properties of a Thai version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS [MP]) and (2) to examine the mean scores of burnout and associated factors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Forward and back translations of the MBI-HSS (MP) questionnaire were performed. The Thai version was subsequently completed by 682 Thai physicians and nurses who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic. Exploratory factor analysis was performed on the first subsample (n = 341) by conducting Kaiser Mayer-Olkin sampling adequacy measurement and Bartlett’s test of sphericity whereas confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed on the second subsample (n = 341) using fit indices of the normed chi-square (χ2/df), the comparative fit index, the Tucker–Lewis index, and the root mean square error of approximation. This version’s internal consistency was investigated using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Demographic profiles were evaluated with descriptive and analytical statistics. Results The Thai version of the MBI-HSS (MP) displayed good psychometric characteristics, as the Cronbach’s alpha values of the 3 burnout factors ranged from 0.843 to 0.945. The CFA also showed good fit indices (χ2/df = 4.473; P < 0.001; RMSEA = 0.075 (95%CI = 0.055-0.079); CFI = 0.946; and TLI = 0.936). The physicians’ mean EE, DP, and PA scores were 25.28 ± 13.27, 7.15 ± 6.11, and 36.83 ± 8.13, respectively, whereas The nurses’ mean EE, DP, and PA scores were 23.10 ± 14.14, 4.43 ± 5.06, and 35.67 ± 10.24, respectively. Healthcare professionals who were younger, single, had fewer years of practice, and had more working hours per week tended to express more burnout scores. Conclusions The Thai version of the MBI-HSS (MP) demonstrates good psychometric properties in assessing burnout among healthcare professionals. Several factors may be pivotal in intensifying burnout.

IMPOSTORS AMONG FAMILY DOCTORS

Introduction. Human resources policy issues in medicine have always played a significant role in ensuring quality medical care for the population. Young specialists face high labor market demands and constant management pressure, without having ready adaptation strategies. The beginning of a success story is always challenging, and sometimes the impostor syndrome can have its influence. Persistent self-doubt leads to emotional exhaustion and the development of a cynical attitude towards others, which can further transform into burnout syndrome.&#x0D; THE AIM: To analyze the prevalence of the impostor phenomenon among young doctors in the field of “General Practice – Family Medicine” and explore potential correlations with burnout syndrome.&#x0D; MATERIALS AND METHODS. We conducted an anonymous cross-sectional survey of 27 young family doctors using The Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel. The research procedure adhered to accepted moral norms, rights, interests, and personal dignity of the participants, in line with the principles of bioethics outlined in the Helsinki Declaration “Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects” and the “Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (UNESCO)”.&#x0D; RESULTS. All respondents demonstrated a certain level of impostor syndrome severity, which might be related to a shift in professional role – the transition from intern to independent practitioner – a family doctor. Every fourth intern already showed signs of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, with 7% having developed burnout syndrome. It is not excluded that these changes are linked to working conditions and military actions on the territory of Ukraine.&#x0D; CONCLUSIONS. Nearly half of the respondents were categorized under intermediate burnout syndrome profiles (Overloaded, Ineffective, Detached), which can be corrected with timely identification and effective management. Without exception, all respondents exhibited various degrees of the impostor phenomenon. The impostor syndrome is closely related to emotional exhaustion (p=0.002) and depersonalization (p=0.000214) within the structure of burnout syndrome, allowing for the development of new correction approaches and optimization of burnout prevention strategies.

Exploring how brain health strategy training informs the future of work.

The workplace typically affords one of the longest periods for continued brain health growth. Brain health is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the promotion of optimal brain development, cognitive health, and well-being across the life course, which we expanded to also include connectedness to people and purpose. This work was motivated by prior work showing individuals, outside of an aggregate setting, benefitted from training as measured by significant performance gains on a holistic BrainHealth Index and its factors (i.e., clarity, connectedness, emotional balance). The current research was conducted during the changing remote work practices emerging post-pandemic to test whether a capacity-building training would be associated with significant gains on measures of brain health and components of burnout. The study also tested the influence of utilization of training modules and days in office for individuals to inform workplace practices. We investigated whether 193 individuals across a firm's sites would improve on measures of brain health and burnout from micro-delivery of online tactical brain health strategies, combined with two individualized coaching sessions, and practical exercises related to work and personal life, over a six-month period. Brain health was measured using an evidenced-based measure (BrainHealth™ Index) with its components (clarity, connectedness, emotional balance) consistent with the WHO definition. Burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey. Days in office were determined by access to digital workplace applications from the firm's network. Regression analyses were used to assess relationships between change in BrainHealth factors and change in components of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results at posttest indicated that 75% of the individuals showed gains on a composite BrainHealth Index and across all three composite factors contributing to brain health. Benefits were directly tied to training utilization such that those who completed the core modules showed the greatest gains. The current results also found an association between gains on both the connectedness and emotional balance brain health factors and reduced on burnout components of occupational exhaustion and depersonalization towards one's workplace. We found that fewer days in the office were associated with greater gains in the clarity factor, but not for connectedness and emotional balance. These results support the value of a proactive, capacity-building training to benefit all employees to complement the more widespread limited offerings that address a smaller segment who need mental illness assistance programs. The future of work may be informed by corporate investment in focused efforts to boost collective brain capital through a human-centered, capacity-building approach. Efforts are underway to uncover the value of better brain health, i.e., Brainomics© - which includes economic, societal, and individual benefits.

Levels of burnout and exposure to ethical conflict and assessment of the practice environment in nursing professionals of intensive care

BackgroundNursing professionals working in Intensive Care Units (ICU) are at high risk of developing negative emotional responses as well as emotional and spiritual problems related to ethical issues. The design of effective strategies that improve these aspects is determined by knowing the levels of burnout and ethical conflict of these professionals, as well as the influence that the practice environment might have on them. ObjectivesTo analyze the relationship between levels of burnout, the exposure to ethical conflicts and the perception of the practice environment among themselves and with sociodemographic variables of the different intensive care nursing professionals. MethodsDescriptive, correlational, cross-sectional, observational study in an ICU of a tertiary level university hospital. The level of burnout was evaluated with the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey scale; the level of ethical conflict with the Ethical Conflict Questionnaire for Nurses and the perception of the environment with the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed. The association between categorical variables was analyzed using Fisher’s exact chi-square test (χ2) Results31 nurses and 8 nursing assistants were evaluated, which meant a participation rate of 82,93%. 31,10% of the nursing professionals presented signs of burnout, 14,89% considered that they work in an unfavorable environment and 87,23% presented a medium-high index of exposure to ethical conflict.The educational level (χ2=11.084, p=0.011) and the professional category (χ2=5.007, p=0.025) influenced the level of burnout: nursing assistants presented higher levels of this.When comparing the level of burnout with the environment and the index of ethical conflict, there were no statistically significant differences. ConclusionsThe absence of association found in the study between Burnout and ethical conflict with the perception of the practice environment suggests that personal factors may influence its development.

Psychometric properties of the arabic version of the maslach burnout inventory-human services survey (MBI-HSS) among lebanese dentists

BackgroundDentists are at risk of burnout syndrome, which can have negative impacts on their work environment and productivity. Assessing burnout is crucial for maintaining the well-being and effectiveness of dentists in their profession. The present study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) among dentists.MethodsThe original English version of the MBI-HSS was translated into Arabic, and then back-translated into English by experienced bilingual professionals. Lebanese dentists were asked to participate in the study between February and June 2019. Data collected included demographic information and items from the Arabic version of the MBI-HSS.ResultsA total of 441 people participated in the study, of whom 58.3% were men. The mean age of the sample was 39.6 years (SD = 12.8), with a range of 23 to 68 years old. Approximately 60% of dentists were specialists. Cronbach’s alphas were as follows: emotional exhaustion (alpha = 0.855), depersonalization (alpha = 0.823), and personal achievement (alpha = 0.667). The results of the test-retest reliability assessment demonstrated the strong reproducibility of the MBI-HSS [EE, ICC = 0.927 (0.845, 0.966), p-value < 0.0001; PA, ICC = 0.963 (0.921–0.983), p-value < 0.001; DP, ICC = 0.764 (0.497–0.889), p-value < 0.0001]. The exploratory factor analysis of the MBI-HSS yielded three psychometrically robust sub-domains representing dimensions of “emotional exhaustion,” “depersonalization,” and “personal achievement,” which explained 57.8% of the scale’s total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the 15-item model (excluding items 4, 5, 12, 13, 16, 20, and 22) was the most fitting for the data.ConclusionsThe Arabic version of the MBI-HSS scale demonstrated good psychometric properties in Lebanese dentists. However, it would be important to conduct further research to confirm its reliability and validity in other Arab countries.

Prevalence of burnout syndrome in Spanish radiologists

Background and aimsThe primary objective was to analyze the prevalence and degree of professional burnout in radiologists in Spain. Secondary objectives were to identify possible factors that increase or decrease the risk of burnout to enable preventive and corrective measures, decrease the stress associated with this condition, and thereby increase radiologists’ performance and satisfaction at work. Material and methodsThis cross-sectional observational study used a voluntary, anonymous online survey of attending radiologists and residents through Google Forms®. The survey was structured into three sections: a qualitative assessment of the degree of professional burnout with the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), a series of sociodemographic and work-related questions, and a final section centered on possible causes of stress and improvements to the working environment.The results of the survey were analyzed statistically to determine which variables were associated with burnout syndrome as well as to identify possible risk factors and protective factors. ResultsAfter disseminating the survey through social networks and email contacts, we received a total of 226 responses (175 from attending radiologists and 51 from residents; 52% men; mean age, 41 ± 11 years; age range, 25–68). The prevalence of the syndrome was 33%, without significant differences between attending radiologists and residents. No risk factors associated with burnout were identified. Teaching in the workplace was the only protective factor. ConclusionsOne-third of the respondents had burnout syndrome. Because the consequences of this syndrome can affect professionals’ personal life and their ability to do their jobs, early detection and intervention should be prioritized.

Post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression and burnout in nursing home staff in South France during the COVID-19 pandemic

The high mortality rate in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic may be linked to psychological disorders in staff. Hence, we assessed the prevalence and associated factors of probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and burnout of nursing home staff during the COVID-19 pandemic in a cross-sectional study including 66 randomly selected nursing homes in southern France. 537 of the contacted 3 821 nursing home workers (14.0%) responded between April and October 2021. We collected information on center organization, severity of COVID-19 exposure, and socio-demographic information in an online survey. The prevalence of probable PTSD (PCL-5), anxiety and depressive disorders (Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale) and the sub-scores of burnout syndrome (Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel) were assessed. Probable PTSD was reported in 115/537 responders (21.4% (95% CI [18.0%–24.9%])). After adjustment, low-level exposure to COVID-19 in nursing home residents (AOR, 0.5; 95% CI [0.3–0.9]), fear of managing COVID-19 residents (AOR, 3.5; 95% CI [1.9–6.4]), conflicts with residents (AOR, 2.3; 95% CI, [1.2–4.4]), conflicts with colleagues (AOR, 3.6; 95% CI [1.7–8.6]), cancellation of leave (AOR, 4.8; 95% CI [2.0–11.7]) and temporary worker employment (AOR, 3.4; 95% CI [1.7–6.9]) were associated with higher prevalence of probable PTSD. The prevalence of probable anxiety and depression were 28.8% (95% CI [24.9%–32.7%]) and 10.4% (95% CI [7.8%–13.1%]), respectively. Psychological disorders were observed in nearly one third of nursing home workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, continuous surveys and preventive measures are needed in this particularly at-risk population.

BackgroundNursing professionals working in intensive care units (ICU) are at high risk of developing negative emotional responses as well as emotional and spiritual problems related to ethical issues. The design of effective strategies that improve these aspects is determined by knowing the levels of burnout and ethical conflict of these professionals, as well as the influence that the practice environment might have on them. ObjectivesTo analyze the relationship between levels of burnout, the exposure to ethical conflicts and the perception of the practice environment among themselves and with sociodemographic variables of the different intensive care nursing professionals. MethodsDescriptive, correlational, cross-sectional, observational study in an ICU of a tertiary level university hospital. The level of burnout was evaluated with the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey scale; the level of ethical conflict with the Ethical Conflict Questionnaire for Nurses; and the perception of the environment with the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed. The association between categorical variables was analyzed using Fisher's exact chi-square test (χ2) Results31 nurses and 8 nursing assistants were evaluated, which meant a participation rate of 82.93%. 31.10% of the nursing professionals presented signs of burnout, 14.89% considered that they work in an unfavorable environment and 87.23% presented a medium-high index of exposure to ethical conflict.The educational level (χ2=11.084, P=.011) and the professional category (χ2=5.007, P=.025) influenced the level of burnout: nursing assistants presented higher levels of this.When comparing the level of burnout with the environment and the index of ethical conflict, there were no statistically significant differences. ConclusionsThe absence of association found in the study between burnout and ethical conflict with the perception of the practice environment suggests that personal factors may influence its development.

Burnout and resilience at work among health professionals serving in tertiary hospitals, in Ethiopia.

The quality of healthcare service is strongly affected by the health professionals' levels of burnout and resilience at work (RaW). Developing resilience is a key component of medical professionalism. Although burnout and resilience are indicators used to assess the level of workplace hardship, there is a dearth of information in most developing countries, including Ethiopia. To assess the levels of burnout and 'resilience at work' among health professionals who work in the surgical care departments in teaching Ethiopian hospitals. A cross-sectional study design was applied among health professionals employed in surgical, gynecologic, and obstetric (Gyn/Obs) departments of two acute-care hospitals (n = 388). A structured self-administered English version questionnaire, consisting of validated scales to measure RaW and burnout, was used to collect the data;22 items of Maslach's burnout inventory human service survey tool and 20 items of Win wood's resilience at work' measuring tool" was employed to assess the health professionals' burnout level and Resilience at work, respectively. Linear logistics regression was employed for inferential statistical analysis to identify factors that predict RaW and burnout. Burnout syndrome was shown among 101 (26.0%) study participants. Furthermore, 205 (52.8%), 150 (38.7%), and 125 (32.2%) participants presented high emotional exhaustion, high depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment, respectively. Emotional exhaustion was predicted by the participants' profession, the hope of promotion, professional recognition, and workload. Depersonalization was predicted by age, profession, and perceived workload of the participants. The predictors for personal accomplishment were profession, relationship at work, professional recognition, and having a managerial position in addition to clinical duty. The participants' mean RaW score was 78.36 (Standard deviation ±17.78). A negative association was found between RaW and emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. In contrast, a positive association was identified between RaW and personal accomplishment. The type of profession and marital status were positive predictors of RaW. A substantial amount of health professionals experience high burnout in one or more burnout dimensions. Level of RaW is more affected by burnout syndrome. Therefore, promoting activities that increase the level of professional RaW and recognition in their professional practice is needed to reduce job burnout. These findings are especially important concerning low socio-economic countries, as resilience is a vital component of the development of healthcare systems.

A Survey of Burnout Among Neurocritical Care Practitioners.

Burnout is a growing problem among medical professionals, reaching a crisis proportion. It is defined by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and career dissatisfaction and is triggered by a mismatch between the values of the person and the demands of the workplace. Burnout has not previously been examined thoroughly in the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS). The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence, contributing factors, and potential interventions to reduce burnout within the NCS. A cross-sectional study of burnout was conducted using a survey distributed to members of the NCS. The electronic survey included personal and professional characteristic questions and the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI). This validated measure assesses for emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal achievement (PA). These subscales are scored as high, moderate, or low. Burnout (MBI) was defined as a high score in either EE or DP or a low score in PA. A Likert scale (0-6) was added to the MBI (which contained 22 questions) to provide summary data for the frequencies of each particular feeling. Categorical variables were compared using χ2 tests, and continuous variables were compared using t-tests. A total of 82% (204 of 248) of participants completed the entire questionnaire; 61% (124 of 204) were burned out by MBI criteria. A high score in EE was present in 46% (94 of 204), a high score in DP was present in 42% (85 of 204), and a low score in PA was present in 29% (60 of 204). The variables feeling burned out now, feeling burned out in the past, not having an effective/responsive supervisor, thinking about leaving one's job due to burnout, and leaving one's job due to burnout were significantly associated with burnout (MBI) (p < 0.05). Burnout (MBI) was also higher among respondents early in practice (currently training/post training 0-5years) than among respondents post training 21 or more years. In addition, insufficient support staff contributed to burnout, whereas improved workplace autonomy was the most protective factor. Our study is the first to characterize burnout among a cross-section of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other practitioners in the NCS. A call to action and a genuine commitment by the hospital, organizational, local, and federal governmental leaders and society as a whole is essential to advocate for interventions to ameliorate burnout and care for our health care professionals.

Burnout in Nurses of an Intensive Care Unit during COVID-19: A Pilot Study in Portugal.

This study aimed to evaluate burnout in intensive care unit nurses and describe the relationship between burnout dimensions and sociodemographic and professional variables. A pilot study was carried out with 29 intensive care nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were collected using an online questionnaire consisting of a sociodemographic characterization and the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey. In the comparative statistical analysis, the nonparametric Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used (p < 0.05). The Emotional Exhaustion dimension represented an average of 27.9 ± 10.4, and the Personal Fulfillment of 30.8 ± 7.0 was considered high. Regarding Depersonalization, medium-level results (8.1 ± 6.0) were found. There was a prevalence of 41.3% of high levels of burnout. There was no statistically significant difference in the comparison between the three dimensions and sociodemographic and professional variables (p > 0.05). The global results point to high levels of burnout in nurses, with greater expression in the Emotional Exhaustion and Professional Fulfillment domains. There were no differences between groups, demonstrating homogeneity in the team's level of burnout. The incidence of burnout in this study was higher than that identified in other studies carried out in Portugal with health professionals. This pilot study will allow the defining of strategies for reducing burnout and, consequently, a proposed extension of the study to other organization wards.

A Survey of Burnout among Neurocritical Care Practitioners (P2-7.003)

<h3>Objective:</h3> Our primary objective is to assess burnout prevalence, factors, and potential interventions to reduce it. We conducted a survey of burnout by distributing a questionnaire to members of the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS). <h3>Background:</h3> Burnout is a growing problem among medical professionals. Then, a multivariable logistic regression model was made. <h3>Results:</h3> A total of 204/248 participants completed the questionnaire; 84% were burned out by MBI criteria. A high/moderate score on EE was present in (150/ 204), a high/moderate score on DP was present in (122/204), and a low/moderate score on PA was present in (123/ 204). Feeling burned out in the past and feeling currently burned out were associated with burnout, p&lt;0.05. Burnout was higher among respondents early in practice (currently-training/post-training 0–5 years) than post-training 21 or more years. On multivariable logistic regression, participants who felt burned out in the past had 3-fold higher odds ratio of current burnout, p&lt;0.01, and those early in practice (currently-training/post-training 0–5 years) and post-training 6–10 years had 3.5-fold and 6.3-fold higher odds ratio of burnout respectively, p&lt;0.05. <h3>Conclusions:</h3> Our study is the first to characterize burnout amongst a cross-section of physicians, pharmacists, nurses and practitioners in the NCS.
