Monetary Policy and Its Price Stabilization Effects on the Prices of Building Materials

Inflation has an influence on the general economic activities of the market system, and this includes the building materials market. The influence of inflation on the price of building materials results in variations in the financial planning and execution of a construction project, which hampers meeting the cost targets and maintain profit margin. It is the responsibility of government to regulate the movement of inflation through the use of Monetary Policies. The monetarist economists argue that the major cause of inflation is the increase in the supply of money in circulation. The Monetary Policy being the principal tool used by the government for price stabilization in mind, this study aims to examine the relationship between the inflationary rates and prices of building materials in the face of Monetary Policy. The study covers a period of ten years and considered twenty-four (24) major construction materials.The result shows that there is a significant relationship between the movement of the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) and the inflation rate. A regression model of y=6894+0.314x, which imply that MPR controls price fluctuation in the general economy, this was not the case with the prices of building materials investigated. The regression of the prices of the building materials against the MPR showed no significant relationship; though the price fluctuated within the period. MPR did not show to have an effect on movement of building material price; hence MPR may not be an effective tool for price stabilization in the building materials market. Computational assessment of thermal performance of contemporary ceramic blocks with complex internal geometry in building envelopes

Contemporary ceramic blocks with the cavities filled by thermal insulation materials appeared in some European countries as a reaction of the brick industry to the increasing requirements on the energy efficiency of buildings. Their dual load-bearing and thermal insulating function, together with the good building-physical qualities and technological advantages makes them competitive on the building materials market. The assessment of their thermal properties is, however, a demanding task which often involves using large-scale experimental facilities for considerable time periods. In this paper, an alternative to the commonly used methods for determination of thermal performance of ceramic blocks with complex internal geometry is presented. The proposed approach is based on the computational modeling of heat transfer in the block, using the thermal properties of involved materials measured in a laboratory experiment as input parameters. The calculated temperature fields and heat fluxes are used for the determination of the effective thermal conductivity, thermal resistance and thermal transmittance. A practical applicability of the method is demonstrated for three ceramic blocks with different thermal insulation materials in the cavities. An uncertainty analysis of the calculated thermal parameters is performed and the results are compared with the data obtained by two different experimental approaches.

Multiplying the origins of mass schooling: an analysis of the preconditions common to schooling and the school building process in Sweden, 1840–1900

The emergence of mass schooling is undoubtedly one of the most significant transformations that took place during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This article takes a new approach to this fundamental issue by analysing the historical conditions required for the construction of school buildings and the advent of mass schooling, in the 1840–1900 period. Using the school building process as a point of departure, the growth of schooling is tied not only to well-known factors such as industrialisation, state formation processes and the decentralisation of school systems, but also to the expansion of the market economy, modernisation of the credit market, liberalisation of the real property market, changes in local tax systems, and the expansion of the building materials market. Thus, a broader and largely novel explanation of the emergence of mass schooling is accomplished.

Alkali-silica reactivity of expanded glass granules in structure of lightweight concrete

Main component in the lightweight concrete, which provides its properties, is aggregate. A lot of investigations on alkali silica reaction (ASR) between cement and lightweight aggregates have been done with their results published in the academic literature. Whereas expanded glass granules, which is relatively new product in the market of building materials, has not been a frequent research object. Therefore lightweight granules made from waste glass and eight types of cement with different chemical and mineralogical composition were examined in this research. Expanded glass granules used in this research is commercially available material produced by Penostek. Lightweight concrete mixtures were prepared by using commercial chemical additives to improve workability of concrete. The aim of the study is to identify effect of cement composition to the ASR reaction which occurs between expanded glass granules and binder. Expanded glass granules mechanical and physical properties were determined. In addition, properties of fresh and hardened concrete were determined. The ASR test was processed according to RILEM AAR-2 testing recommendation. Tests with scanning electron microscope and microstructural investigations were performed for expanded glass granules and hardened concrete specimens before and after exposing them in alkali solution.

Physiochemical characterization of coarse aggregates in Qatar for construction industry

Due to the sheer volume of construction activities in Qatar, the market of building materials including aggregates is stressed. The commercially available natural aggregates are either local limestone aggregate or imported limestone as well as gabbro aggregates from the United Arab Emirates. In addition, recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) are produced since 2009 as a result of the extensive construction and demolition activities. It is estimated that around 20,000 tons of construction and demolition (C&D) wastes are produced daily in Qatar; half of which are converted daily to RCA. Imported limestone and gabbro aggregates are widely employed for various construction activities in Qatar; however the use of local limestone aggregates are limited due to their substantial heterogeneity, uncontrolled water absorption and abrasion quality. Although, the specification of RCA for concrete applications has recently been introduced through the revised Qatar construction standards (QCS) in 2010, their commercial use is under experimental evaluation. However, the properties of the aforementioned virgin and recycled coarse aggregates were hardly ever systematically published. Hence, this study presents the initial physiochemical characterization and comparison of the virgin aggregate properties, with those of locally available RCA as a sustainable alternative. The physiochemical properties were bench marked against the stipulated thresholds of QCS (2010) and other characterization properties. It was observed that both local limestone and RCA have inferior water absorption and porosity characteristics in comparison to imported gabbro and limestone aggregates. Previous international standards and studies have demonstrated the successful partial RCA replacement of imported virgin aggregates in concrete applications; and if implemented, could potentially offer significant economic and environmental benefits to the State of Qatar. However, it was recommended to undertake further laboratory studies to assess the mechanical performance and durability of such replacements prior to practical implementations within the construction industry in Qatar.

Properties of cellulosic fibre reinforced plaster: influence of hemp or flax fibres on the properties of set gypsum

In the last few years, eco friendly materials have become an important part of the building materials market. Natural fibres are already used in various types of materials, like plastics, concrete and lime-based products. They demonstrate different attributes like the combination of good mechanical, thermal and acoustic properties that allow these types of materials to be used for different applications. The main drawback associated with plaster is its brittleness, especially under tensile stress. Therefore, it is interesting to investigate different methods that could potentially enhance the mechanical properties of plaster. Adding fibres to gypsum to obtain a composite material is one way to improve the behaviour of the product, especially after the failure of the matrix. The aim of this work was to the study the effects of adding natural fibres, namely hemp and flax fibres, on the setting time of plaster and the mechanical properties of the composite matrix. It was shown that hemp delayed the setting of plaster, unlike flax. The initial and final setting times almost doubled when hemp was added in a plaster matrix, whereas flax fibres did not drastically change them. Different chemical treatments of hemp were tested and the impact on the setting time was measured. The setting times of both composites made with hemp and flax were reduced once the fibres were treated (25–40% reduction), compared to the setting time of the calcium sulphate hemihydrate alone. The mechanical properties of the composite materials are also discussed. The behaviour of plaster was modified from brittle to a non-linear one when fibres were added, and even at small levels of addition, flax fibres allowed slightly higher values of flexural strength to be reached.

The Third World Option in a Globalized Building Materials Market: The Nigeria Case Study

Globalization has been described as a world phenomenon that provides a level ground for competitive rivalry between economies, skills, goods, technological and industrial products, etc, from every part of the global World- More Developed Countries (MDC) and Less Developed Countries (LDC) alike. In this study, the extent to which the ground is “level” for globalization is examined between the more and less developed nations of the world, using Nigeria as a study case for the latter. The study examines the relationship of globalization to the level of industrial and economic development of nations in general, and specifically, the industrial and economic status of Nigeria in the committee of nations. The study notes the wide disparity in the level of industrialization and economic development between the more and less developed countries of the world. Drawing from history and experience and enlisting certain social economic and environmental theories relevant to the industrial and economic development of nations the study concludes and makes a case against third world nations from procuring building materials from a globalized market. Further, the study suggests the enactment of state policy measures and interventions capable of protecting native industries and production technology from the choking influences of those from industrially, more developed, nations of the world.

Wusasa — Where the future acknowledges the past

This article discusses the architectural development of Wusasa College, the oldest Anglican theological establishment in Northern Nigeria, and considers the ways in which buildings at Wusasa reflect on how socio-cultural, environmental, and economic factors have influenced the development of recent construction trends. Its contention is that the new move towards the use of traditional locally available building materials in Wusasa and elsewhere in the country, is a direct result of the economic situation and other socio-cultural factors influencing choice in present day Nigeria. It hypothesises that if this move towards more appropriate building is to achieve permanence, more effective forms of public encouragement are required. It is felt that the contribution of four factors: (1) publicity, (2) government involvement, (3) private sector involvement, and (4) research and development, are crucial to this process. The need to develop an affordable and sustainable local building materials market is essential for the development needs of small communities and self-help groups in all parts of Nigeria, and is the first step towards creating truly indigenous architecture.
