The effect of various pretreatment conditions of brown algae Fucus evanescens, Saccharina japonica, and Sargassum oligocystum on the yield and structural characteristics of fucoidans was studied. The conditions included extraction by aqueous EtOH (70%) and supercritical CO2 with 5% EtOH as solvent and without it. It was shown that highly pure fucoidans from each alga species were similar in yield and structural characteristics for various pretreatment conditions. The exception was 5% EtOH as co-solvent for pretreatment with supercritical CO2, which enabled only highly sulfated fucoidan fractions with homogeneous monosaccharide compositions to be selectively obtained.
