Determination of Iodine Values of Lipids by Bromide Ion Selective Electrode

Abstract A semimicro method for determination of iodine values of lipids is described. An accurately weighed smear of sample (10-20 mg) on a strip of ashless filter paper, 14 × 40 mm, is brominated with bromine vapors for about 5 min. Excess bromine adsorbed on the filter paper is allowed to sublime. Bromine absorbed by the sample is directly related to the degree of unsaturation. Paper with brominated sample is subjected to oxygen flask combustion in the presence of 2 mL 1M sodium hydroxide solution and 10 mL water as absorbing liquid. Bromide formed, which is equivalent to unsaturation, is determined by bromide ion selective electrode. Bromide ions can be also determined by gravimetry or by indirect argentometric titration. The results were statistically analyzed. The iodine values of some fatty acids and oils, determined by this technique, are in accord with those of some officially approved methods.

The HgS/Hg2Br2-Based Bromide Ion-Selective Electrode

Abstract Near-parallel efforts in our laboratories and those of I. Sekerka and J.F. Lechner of the Canada Center for Inland Waters have resulted in the development of a new bromide ion-selective electrode having an active membrane which is composed of a mixture of HgS and Hg2Br2. We report here on the response mechanism of this electrode, and also differences between our results and those of the above workers regarding interferences, pH dependency, and selectivity constants for this electrode.

Analysis of Bromide Ion in Wine by Ion Selective Electrode

The use of the bromide ion selective electrode for the determination of bromide ion in wine has been found to be rapid and reliable. The method has been used for still wines and carbonated wines and is applicable to all wines regardless of their country of origin. The method consists of treating a 50 ml aliquot of wine with 2 ml each of 3.75M H3PO4, saturated KNO3, and 1M CuSO4. After 10 min the electrodes are immersed in the samples and a millivolt reading is obtained. One hundred mul 500 ppm bromide ion standard is added and the millivolt reading is taken. Bromide ion concentration in the wine equals (Cdelta x 1)/((antilog deltaE/S)-1) where Cdelta equals 1, deltaE equals the change in potential expressed in millivolts, and S equals the electrode slope.

Potentiometric Measurements in Non-Aqueous Media Using Bromide and Iodide Ion Selective Membrane Electrodes

Abstract Solid membrane bromide and iodide ion selective membrane electrodes were evaluated for their performance in non-aqueous media. The electrodes were evaluated in several alcohols and glacial acetic acid.

The use of a bromide ion selective electrode for the measurement of counter-ion activity in cationic surfactant solutions.

Abstract A bromide ion selective electrode has been used in conjunction with a saturated calomel reference electrode to measure bromide ion activity in solutions of n-decyl, n-dodecyl, n-tetradecyl and n-hexadecyl 1-trimethylammonium bromides at 30°; the critical micelle concentrations of the surfactants were measured by electrical conductance. Calibration of the electrode pair in potassium bromide solutions produced a linear response over the range 0·5 to 5·0p Bra− with a slope of 59·1 mV for a 10-fold change in activity. Results for the surfactants were treated to give values for the degree of micellar dissociation; literature values for this quantity reveal wide variation depending on the technique used.
