Numerical Analysis of Optical Properties Using Octagonal Shaped Ge15As15Se17Te53 Chalcogenide Photonic Crystal Fiber

A novel Ge15As15Se17Te53 chalcogenide-based photonic crystal fiber with an octagonal cladding was designed which exhibits low confinement loss and high nonlinearity. The dispersion properties were investigated over a wide wavelength range of up to 11 µm. Based on preliminary simulation results, three fibers with suitable characteristic quantities are proposed for supercontinuum generation. Among these fibers, fiber #F1 (Ʌ = 3.1 µm, d/Ʌ = 0.3) exhibits all-normal dispersion with a small value of −0.374 ps/[nm.km]. At the same time, the highest nonlinear coefficient of 2876.861 W−1.km−1 at the pump wavelength of 5.45 µm is also found. The #F2 fiber (Ʌ= 4.5 µm, d/Ʌ = 0.3) has anomalous flat dispersion with one zero dispersion wavelength. This fiber has the smallest dispersion and lowest confinement loss values of 0.281 ps/[nm.km] and 1.360×10−9 at 5.7 µm pump wavelength, respectively. With the anomalous dispersion, #F3 fiber (Ʌ = 3.5 µm, d/Ʌ = 0.3) offers a small effective mode area of 20.892 µm2 and a low confinement loss of 4.974×10−8 dB/m at 5.25 µm wavelength. The proposed fibers can be a low peak power, broadband supercontinuum source, suitable for application fields such as optical communication and biomedical sensors.

Optimization of dispersions in benzene-core square photonic crystal fibers for mid-infrared supercontinuum generation with very low peak power

An ultra-broadband, very low peak power supercontinuum source is proposed based on a novel benzene-filled structured photonic crystal fiber. The modification of the structural parameters has been highly effective in improving dispersion properties, an ultra-flat all-normal dispersion is achieved with fluctuations of ±1.174 ps/(nm.km) in the 0.458 µm wavelength region. Three fibers with suitable optical properties best meet the requirements of supercontinuum generations with low peak power based on numerical simulation results. With anomalous dispersion regime, the first fiber offers the supercontinuum spectra in the mid-infrared region spanning from 0.784 µm to 3.973 µm (2.539 µm bandwidth at 30 dB) using laser pulses excited at 1.55 µm has a peak power of 150 W. A pulse with a peak power of 280 W propagates in a 5 cm length of the second fiber results in a supercontinuum spectrum covering from 0.744 µm to 1.859 (bandwidth 1.063 µm at 30 dB) at a pump wavelength of 1.3 µm with all-normal dispersion regime. A smooth, highly coherent supercontinuum spectrum spanning from 0.843 µm to 2.517 µm (bandwidth at 30 dB of 1.608 µm) is achieved when the third fiber has all-normal ultra-flat dispersion profile pumped at 1.75 µm wavelength with laser pulse peak power of 350 W. With very low peak power, these proposed three-fiber based broadband supercontinuum sources could be a low-cost alternative to traditional glass-core fiber, which has great potential for mid-infrared spectroscopy.

Supercontinuum generation in As2S3 chalcogenide waveguide pumped by all-fiber structured dual-femtosecond solitons.

Supercontinuum sources with high compactness are essential for applications such as optical sensing, airborne detection and communication systems. In the past decades, the adoption of bulky optical parametric amplifier to pump various chalcogenide glass waveguides are widely reported for on-chip mid-infrared supercontinuum generation, but this usually leads to a large volume of the whole system, and is not practical. Therefore, integrating advanced femtosecond fiber lasers with optical waveguides using nano-fabrication technology are highly desired. However, the scarcity of compact pump sources and the dispersion-matched high-nonlinearity waveguide in short wavelength regions have hindered the advancement of integrated supercontinuum source performances in the near and mid-infrared region. In this study, we demonstrate a broadband supercontinuum source from As2S3 waveguide pumped by a compact dual-femtosecond solitons pulse source. The laser is completely fiber structured, and its wavelength can be readily tuned from 2 to 2.3 µm using Raman soliton self-frequency shift technology in a Tm3+-doped fiber amplifier. Furthermore, the As2S3 waveguide is designed with controllable dispersion and high nonlinearity for a broadband supercontinuum generation. These results will advance the development of on-chip supercontinuum sources based on chalcogenide waveguides.

All-Silica Fiber Ultra-Flat 2-3 μm Supercontinuum Source Based on Highly Nonlinear Silica Fiber

In this letter, we demonstrated an all-silica fiber 1.5- <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$3.2 ~\mu \text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> supercontinuum (SC) source based on germanium-doped highly nonlinear fibers (HNLF). By optimizing the length of HNLF, as the pump injected into the HNLF increased to 6 W, a 4.12 W broadband SC source extending from 1516 to 3182 nm was obtained. The 3 dB spectrum bandwidth was up to 1022 nm ranging from 1855 nm to 2877 nm, and the 1 dB bandwidth was up to 878 nm covering from 1959 nm to 2837 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the flattest SC in the 2- <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$3 ~\mu \text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> region based on doped silica fiber to date.

All-fiber high-power supercontinuum laser source over 3.5 µm based on a germania-core fiber.

In this Letter, a high-power all-fiber mid-infrared (MIR) supercontinuum (SC) laser source based on 9 cm long germania-core fiber (GCF) pumped by a high-power thulium-doped fiber amplifier is presented. As the pump power was set as 60 W, we obtained a 21.34 W broadband SC source extending from 1742 to 3512 nm with a slope efficiency of 32.5%. The 10 dB spectral bandwidth was over 1000 nm, spanning 1.97 to 3.04 µm. Furthermore, the numerical simulation of SC generation in GCF was in good agreement with the experimental results. As far as we know, this is the highest average output power over 3.5 µm in GCF based on a MIR SC laser source.

All normal dispersion nonlinear fibre supercontinuum source characterization and application in hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering microscopy

Hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy is a powerful label-free, chemical-specific technique for biomedical and mineralogical imaging. Usually, broad and rapid spectral scanning across Raman bands is required for species identification. In many implementations, however, the Raman spectral scan speed is limited by the need to tune source laser wavelengths. Alternatively, a broadband supercontinuum source can be considered. In SRS microscopy, however, source noise is critically important, precluding many spectral broadening schemes. Here we show that a supercontinuum light source based on all normal dispersion (ANDi) fibres provides a stable broadband output with very low incremental source noise. We characterized the noise power spectral density of the ANDi fibre output and demonstrated its use in hyperspectral SRS microscopy applications. This confirms the viability and ease of implementation of ANDi fibre sources for broadband SRS imaging.

Control of supercontinuum generation from filamentation of shaped femtosecond laser pulses

Supercontinuum (SC), as one of the most spectacular phenomena occurring in the nonlinear process of intense femtosecond laser-material interaction, has attracted considerable interest. The broadband SC sources have a variety of applications including the spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy, remote sensing, and generation of few-cycle pulses. Over the last few decades, the SC has been extensively investigated in various optical media, including liquid, gas, and solid. Especially, ultrabroadband SC sources have achieved remarkable development in the photonic crystal and micro-structured fibers. Even so, the generation of the SC with high brightness, high spatiotemporal coherence and good maneuverability, is still a challenging topic. The SC generation from femtosecond filamentation is a unique white light source with high pulse energy, high brightness and high spatiotemporal coherence, whose spectral range spans from ultraviolet to mid-infrared. In recent years, numerous studies have been conducted to optimize the filamentation and SC. The control of filamentation such as the filament length, number and position, as well as the generation of the ultra-broadband spectrum with high spectral energy density has been realized. To date, the optimal control of SC has been realized by the spatial modulation or time-domain shaping of the femtosecond laser pulse. However, there is no report on the control of SC generation and filamentation by spatiotemporally modulating the femtosecond laser pulses as far as we know. In this work, a spatiotemporal modulation for the femtosecond laser pulse is proposed, which combines the spatial modulation by using microlens array (MLA) and the laser pulse shaping based on liquid crystal spatial light modulator. We investigate the control of the SC generation from the filamentation of the spatiotemporally modulated femtosecond laser pulses in fused silica by using the feedback optimal control based on genetic algorithm. In our experiments, with the increase of the iterative generation, the cut-off wavelength in the blue-side extension of the SC becomes shorter gradually, and the spectral intensity of the SC increases significantly. After the eighth iteration, the increase of the spectral intensity slows. With the number of iterations increasing further, the intensity and broadening of SC spectrum will no longer apparently change. Hence, the feedback optimization control of spectral intensity of SC is realized, and the SC with controllable spectral intensity in a certain range is obtained. The maximum intensity variation of SC is more than three times. By integrating the spectral intensities of SC for different iterative generations, we characterize the increase trend of SC conversion efficiency. During the first few iterations, the conversion efficiency increases rapidly. Then it increases slowly after eighth generations and reaches its maximum after several generations (10th generation). The conversion efficiency has a similar evolution to the spectral intensity of the SC. To explain the physical mechanism, the initial envelope of the shaping pulse with typical iteration generation is calculated. It can be concluded that the spatial modulation of MLA allows for higher incident laser energy and for more filaments’ generation, which increases the energy of SC radiation directly. The peak intensity and envelope distribution of time domain pulse are the main factors affecting the spectral intensity and broadening the SC.

Glucose Sensing inEx-VivoHuman Gingival Tissue With Enhanced Sensitivity in Combination Band

The proposed technique based on frequency domain dual wavelength low coherence interferometry (FD-DWLCI) is demonstrated for sensing glucose in ex-vivo human gingival tissue, with preliminary studies performed on solid bilayer gingival tissue phantom and saline. A broad band supercontinuum source filtered using bandpass filters with centre wavelengths at 1300, 1580 (corresponding to the first overtone region), and 2100 nm (corresponding to the combination band of glucose) was employed for the studies. Enhanced glucose resolutions of 11 and 15 mg/dl were estimated for the ratio of relative reflectivity of wavelengths 2100 /1300 nm, in the gingival tissue phantom and ex-vivo human gingival tissue, respectively.

Fourier-domain mode-locked laser combined with a master-oscillator power amplifier architecture

Originally introduced in 2005 for high-speed optical coherence tomography, the rapidly wavelength-swept Fourier-domain mode-locked (FDML) laser still, to this day, enables highest imaging speeds through a very high-speed spectral tuning capability. The FDML laser achieves a tuning bandwidth of over 1/10th of its center wavelength and can sweep this entire bandwidth in less than a microsecond. Interestingly, even though it covers a very broad spectral range, instantaneously it has a narrow spectral linewidth that puts it in a unique space compared to other high-speed broadband laser sources, e.g., mode-locked lasers or supercontinuum sources. Although it has been applied for nonlinear Raman spectroscopy and imaging, a current drawback of this continuous wave laser is the relatively low instantaneous power of 10-100mW. Here, we report the combination of an FDML laser with a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) architecture to increase the instantaneous power of the FDML for nonlinear optical interactions. The output of an FDML laser around 1060nm is modulated to short pulses by using an electro-optic amplitude modulator and subsequently amplified using ytterbium-doped fiber amplifiers (YDFAs). This generates a spectral rainbow of 65 picosecond pulses, where each pulse has a distinct, monochromatic wavelength. The instantaneous power can be adjusted by the YDFAs to reach nonlinear optical excitation regimes. This wavelength-swept FDML-MOPA laser will have a vast range of applications in, e.g., nonlinear optics, spectroscopy, imaging, and sensing.

Multispectral photoacoustic sensing for accurate glucose monitoring using a supercontinuum laser

Accurate monitoring of glucose levels constitutes the most important parameter for diabetes management and treatment planning. In this work, we report on an in vitro glucose monitoring system based on multispectral photoacoustic sensing (MSPAS) using a cost-effective supercontinuum (SC) laser. We demonstrate for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, how the use of a broadband SC source allows the identification of distinct absorption characteristics of two major analytes (glucose and cholesterol) present in the human body in the extended near-infrared 1540–1840 nm spectral range. Employing the reported SC-based MSPAS system with a ratiometric analysis, we were able to accurately (coefficient of determination ≥0.938) measure a wide range of glucose concentration levels in vitro. We further demonstrate clinically accurate prediction of glucose concentrations over commonly encountered physiological levels inside the human body (0–400 mg/dL) with reference to a Clarke error grid analysis. These findings pave the way for devising potentially noninvasive and label-free continuous glucose monitoring systems.

Towards a table-top synchrotron based on supercontinuum generation

Recently, high brightness and broadband supercontinuum (SC) sources reaching far into the infrared (IR) have emerged with the potential to rival traditional broadband sources of IR radiation. Here, the brightness of these IR SC sources is compared with that of synchrotron IR beamlines and SiC thermal emitters (Globars). It is found that SC sources can deliver a brightness that is 5–6 orders of magnitude higher than Globars and 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than typical IR beamlines, matching the beamlines at least out to 10.6 µm (940 cm−1). This means that these sources can now cover nearly all of the 800–5000 cm−1 spectrum (2–12.5 µm) which is frequently used in IR spectroscopy and microscopy. To demonstrate applicability, such an IR SC source was used for transmission spectroscopy of highly scattering filtration membranes from 3500 to 1300 cm−1, and transmission microscopy of colon tissue at 1538 cm−1.

Asterisk-shaped microstructured fiber for an octave coherent supercontinuum in a sub-picosecond region.

We selected two thermally matched silicate glasses with fair refractive index contrast and developed an asterisk-shaped all-solid microstructured optical fiber. The fiber presents a low, ultra-flat, and all-normal dispersion in a wide wavelength range, allowing for the generation of an octave-spanning coherent supercontinuum (SC) in a 20dB dynamic range with 0.5ps pump pulses at 1.55μm. This result improves pump pulse duration that is only ∼100 fs, related to the broadband and highly coherent SC generation in fibers with all-normal dispersion. This enables broadband SC sources with all-fiber, high-power, and highly coherent properties.

Ultrahigh-brightness, spectrally-flat, short-wave infrared supercontinuum source for long-range atmospheric applications.

Fiber based supercontinuum (SC) sources with output spectra covering the infrared atmospheric window are very useful in long-range atmospheric applications. It is proven that silica fibers can support the generation of broadband SC sources ranging from the visible to the short-wave infrared region. In this paper, we present the generation of an ultrahigh-brightness spectrally-flat 2-2.5 μm SC source in a cladding pumped thulium-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) numerically and experimentally. The underlying physical mechanisms behind the SC generation process are investigated firstly with a numerical model which includes the fiber gain and loss, the dispersive and nonlinear effects. Simulation results show that abundant soliton pulses are generated in the TDFA, and they are shifted towards the long wavelength side very quickly with the nonlinearity of Raman soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS), and eventually the Raman SSFS process is halted due to the silica fiber's infrared loss. A spectrally-flat 2-2.5 μm SC source could be generated as the result of the spectral superposition of these abundant soliton pulses. These simulation results correspond qualitatively well to the following experimental results. Then, in the experiment, a cladding pumped large-mode-area TDFA is built for pursuing a high-power 2-2.5 μm SC source. By enhancing the pump strength, the output SC spectrum broadens to the long wavelength side gradually. At the highest pump power, the obtained SC source has a maximum average power of 203.4 W with a power conversion efficiency of 38.7%. It has a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 545 nm ranging from 1990 to 2535 nm, indicating a power spectral density in excess of 370 mW/nm. Meanwhile, the output SC source has a good beam profile. This SC source, to the best of our knowledge, is the brightest spectrally-flat 2-2.5 μm light source ever reported. It will be highly desirable in a lot of long-range atmospheric applications, such as broad-spectrum LIDAR, free space communication and hyper-spectral imaging.

High Brightness 2.2–12 μm Mid‐Infrared Supercontinuum Generation in a Nontoxic Chalcogenide Step‐Index Fiber

An environment friendly nonlinear chalcogenide glass fiber with a Ge‐Sb‐Se core and a Ge‐Se cladding is fabricated for bright broadband mid‐infrared (MIR) supercontinuum (SC) generation. The fabricated Ge‐Sb‐Se/Ge‐Se fiber with a core diameter of 6 μm shows zero group velocity dispersion at ~4.2 μm and ~7.3 μm. By pumping the fiber with a length of 11 cm at 4.485 μm with 330 fs pulses, we achieve a SC covering the 2.2–12 μm spectral range and with an output average power of ~17 mW. This bright broadband SC source is promising for high‐resolution MIR spectroscopy.

Optimal operational conditions for supercontinuum-based ultrahigh-resolution endoscopic OCT imaging.

We investigated the optimal operational conditions for utilizing a broadband supercontinuum (SC) source in a portable 800 nm spectral-domain (SD) endoscopic OCT system to enable high resolution, high-sensitivity, and high-speed imaging in vivo. A SC source with a 3-dB bandwidth of ∼246 nm was employed to obtain an axial resolution of ∼2.7 μm (in air) and an optimal detection sensitivity of ∼-107 dB with an imaging speed up to 35 frames/s (at 70 k A-scans/s). The performance of the SC-based SD-OCT endoscopy system was demonstrated by imaging guinea pig esophagus in vivo, achieving image quality comparable to that acquired with a broadband home-built Ti:sapphire laser.

All-Fiber-Integrated High-Power Supercontinuum Sources Based on Multi-Core Photonic Crystal Fibers

The obstacles of power scaling the supercontinuum (SC) source based on single-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) are analyzed. The combination of high-power fiber lasers and multi-core PCFs would be a feasible method to obtain an all-fiber-integrated high-power broadband SC source (covering visible range). In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of high-power SC generation in multi-core PCFs. Comparative experiments are performed by using a high-power pulse-repetition-rate-tunable picosecond fiber laser to pump two kinds of home-made seven-core PCFs. The influences of PCF structure (fiber dispersion property) and pulse repetition rate (pulse peak power) on the SC generation in multi-core PCFs are investigated in detail. When the picosecond fiber laser at a pulse repetition rate of 1.9 GHz is adopted as the pump, 116 W SC spanning from 800 to 1700 nm is generated in 1# seven-core PCF. Also 64 W visible SC spanning at least 500-1700 nm is demonstrated in 2# seven-core PCF at a pump pulse repetition rate of 480 MHz. The potential of extending the spectral range and scaling the output power for the SC source based on multi-core PCFs are analyzed and discussed.

Combined photoacoustic and optical coherence tomography using a single near-infrared supercontinuum laser source

We developed an integrated dual-modal photoacoustic and optical coherence tomography (PA-OCT) system using a single near-infrared supercontinuum laser source to simultaneously provide both optical absorption and scattering contrasts. A pulsed broadband supercontinuum source was generated by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser and a photonic-crystal fiber. When we imaged two colored hairs, the black hair was visible in both PA and OCT images, whereas the white hair was only mapped in the OCT image. The single laser source will potentially allow us to implement relatively simple, cheap, and compact dual-modal PA-OCT systems, which are key criteria for fast clinical translation and commercialization.

All Fiber Continuous-Wave Supercontinuum Source for Sensing

A broadband supercontinuum source is demonstrated with phosphosilicate-doped Raman fiber laser. By lunching 1495nm continuous-wave pump into a short length of microstructure fiber with high nonlinearity and flat dispersion, high efficiency continuum spanning from 1450nm to 1650nm is generated, covering the whole communication windows. The average output power is as high as 2W when the pump is set as 4.14W, corresponding to a spectral density of 10mW/nm. This all -fiber light source can be applied in fiber sensing system.

Chromatic dispersion measurement of holey fibres using a supercontinuum source and a dispersion balanced interferometer

Chromatic dispersion of polarization modes in short-length holey fibres is measured by a spectral interferometric technique employing a broad-band supercontinuum source. The technique utilizes a dispersion balanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer with a fibre under test of known length inserted in one of the interferometer arms and the other arm with adjustable path length. We record a series of spectral interferograms to measure the equalization wavelength as a function of the path length difference, or equivalently the differential group index dispersion of the fibre. A five-term power series fit is applied to the measured data to obtain the chromatic dispersion over a broad spectral range (500–1600nm). We measured by this technique the chromatic dispersion of polarization modes in four air-silica holey fibres and revealed the dependence of the position of the zero-dispersion wavelength on the geometrical parameters of the fibre.
