In the urban setting the application of photovoltaics to buildings is being vigorously explored by BP Solar, one of the world's largest solar companies. BP Solar has been pioneering the integration of solar cell technology into building roofs and façades for the last two years. Following an initial study in association with Ove Arup & Partners, funded by the UK government, BP Solar is now undergoing a promotional phase with architects and building façade manufacturers to secure the incorporation of photovoltaic (PV) systems in current building projects world-wide. One such project is the façade refurbishment of an academic block on the campus of the University of Northumbria which will include PV cladding. This paper will discuss design issues associated with the integration of PV systems into building architecture and quantify the PV energy contribution to typical commercial buildings.
