Collaborative cultures: Ubuntu as a pedagogical foundation for educating independent film-makers

This case study centres on the Ubuntu Collaboration Model introduced to Bournemouth University in the UK in 2018. Initially focused on undergraduate teaching, the model is now embedded as part of the university’s practice-based and industry-focused Media Production master’s programmes (2019–ongoing). The goal of this initiative is to develop and install a practical approach to film teaching that deliberately fosters a consciousness of cross-cultural collaboration among emerging independent film-makers coming from diverse backgrounds. The model is founded on the principles of the African philosophical concept of Ubuntu, which suggests, among other things, that we can only progress productively through a shared value system that finds expression in respectful social interaction (that is, collaboration). Co-authored with master’s students, this case study contextualises and analyses the experiences of the master’s film production cohort who were part of this pedagogical journey in 2022/3.

Experiments in Zoomumentary – telepresence and absence beyond the grid*

ABSTRACT This report describes and reflects on the practical workshop activity that was part of the Telepresence to Teletrust online Symposium in July 2021 hosted by Bournemouth University Experimental Media Research Centre led by Professor David Garcia. The Zoom workshops co-convened by Dr Trevor Hearing and Dr. Brad Gyori were a forum for experimentation and discussion by attendees to performatively investigate the notion of ‘the third space’, in the context of an emerging hybrid environment of shared online presence and performance. The theme was set out by Garcia, acknowledging the foundational conceptualisation and use of the term in other contexts previously in the work of Bhabha, Soja, Tuan and others. The workshops explored the experience of ‘risk’, ‘liveness’ and ‘presence and absence’ in the telepresence context and were reflected on by participants as they discovered the value of practice as a method of enquiry in this developing field.

Digitally Enlightened or Still in the Dark? Establishing a Sector-Wide Approach to Enhancing Data Synthesis and Research Potential in British Environmental Archaeology and Beyond

In a 2019 Internet Archaeology article, Elizabeth Pearson posed the question 'are we back in the Dark Ages?'. This question was made in reference to a developer-funded archaeology sector that was generating vast quantities of evidence and, particularly, in recent years, specialist environmental data, but was failing to mobilise this in a theoretical framework that generated meaningful advancement in terms of research. The introduction to the 2021 Internet Archaeology special issue on Digital Archiving in Archaeology (Richards et al. 2021) went on to address 'a digital resource that is now in jeopardy' – not only because of the risk of technical obsolescence, but also because of crucial limitations to its interoperability and discoverability. This article builds on these arguments and complements vital work underway on high-level, internationally focused data infrastructure initiatives (e.g. Wright and Richards 2018). We emphasise here the importance of parallel discussions at a community level, particularly with the people who routinely produce archaeological data, as key to enhancing data synthesis and research potential. Specifically, we report on two surveys conducted by the 'Rewilding' Later Prehistory project at Oxford Archaeology, in collaboration with Historic England and Bournemouth University, which originated in the 'Rewilding' project's concern with improving access to palaeoenvironmental data produced within Britain. Substantial amounts of zooarchaeological and archaeobotanical data remain buried in grey literature, limited-access publications and archive reports (not to mention floppy disks, CDs and microfiche), with no integrative means of searching for particular periods or categories of evidence. This lack of accessibility inhibits specialists from contextualising their findings, and was exemplified recently by the Archaeology on Furlough project tripling the known number of aurochs finds in Britain by trawling online records, journals and museum records (Wiseman 2020). The results of the surveys presented here, which targeted both environmental archaeologists specifically and the wider sector, demonstrate a significant appetite amongst archaeologists to improve data networks and for their work to contribute meaningfully to research agendas. Contextualised within a disciplinary landscape that is increasingly dynamic in its approach to tackling the openness and connectivity of 'big data', we argue that better data synthesis in environmental archaeology, and the developer-funded sector more broadly, can be more than just a mirage on the horizon, particularly once the people who produce the data are given an active voice in the matter.

Safeguarding strategies and current HIV treatment in the UK

Objectives: This study aims to illuminate contemporary strategies and treatment approaches employed in the United Kingdom (UK) to safeguard against Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) transmission and enhance the well-being of those grappling with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The review contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the nation's ongoing efforts in managing the impact of HIV on public health. Material and Methods: Research, reports, guidelines, and official websites from 2005 to 2024 were searched from the Pubmed database and Bournemouth University's database. English resources were searched using keywords related to HIV risk measures, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and anti-retroviral therapy (ART). Results: HIV prevention efforts in the UK emphasize education, widespread testing, and targeted interventions. Strategies include promoting safe sex practices, regular testing, and condom use. HIV testing, PrEP, PEP and ART play crucial roles in prevention and treatment, with initiatives focusing on high-risk populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender individuals. Challenges include regional variations, financial constraints, and social stigma. Conclusions: A holistic and adaptable approach is essential in HIV prevention and treatment in the UK. Education, widespread testing, and tailored interventions for diverse populations are key components. Challenges such as financial constraints and social stigma require sustained efforts and global collaboration. Advancements in PrEP, PEP, and ART offer promising avenues for mitigating the impact of HIV, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and adherence.

Bone citrate content as an indicator of post-mortem interval.

The citrate levels in the bone start to decrease after death. Therefore, it may be possible to estimate the post-mortem interval if the citrate content decreases at regular and predictable intervals. To verify this, it was used twelve fresh porcine tibiae and femora, fifteen recently buried porcine bones, two samples of human bones curated from the anatomical teaching collection from Bournemouth University, UK (never been buried) and fifteen samples of archaeological human bones from Saint Augustine the Less, Bristol, UK. The results obtained in this study align together with the data available in the literature, with higher citrate content in the fresh porcine bones and lower in the archaeological samples, however, a statistical significance was not found. Moreover, the formula used to estimate the time since death largely overestimated the known PMI. Further research should be done with a larger sample and a new formula to estimate the post-mortem interval is required.

Interview with Professor Edwin van Teijlingen

Edwin van Teijlingen is Dutch by birth and a Professor of Reproductive Health at Bournemouth University in the south of England. He has achieved a PhD in Medical Sociology at the University of Aberdeen, UK. Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen connected with Nepal while supervising Nepali PhD scholars in UK, and he has been a frequent visitor to Nepal since 2006. He has supervised more than 35 PhDs, among which 13 are Nepali. He has examined more than 50 PhDs. He has published around 300 academic papers and book chapters in health promotion, midwifery, and health services research. He serves as a peer reviewer for worldwide famous health journals such as PLOS One and BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth. He delivered a speech to the Members of Parliamentarians in Kathmandu in 2016 as part of a workshop to promote evidence-based policymaking. He is a committee member on various grant-awarding bodies in the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and the USA. He is a visiting Professor at the Centre for Disability Studies, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala in India (2020-present); the School of Health Sciences at the University of Nottingham in England (2017-2026); Nobel College, affiliated with Pokhara University, Nepal (2012-present); and Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences affiliated with Tribhuvan University (2009-present). We would like to express our gratitude for his acceptance to share personal and academic lives, which can inspire young and energetic scholars in Nepal and elsewhere.

Staff-Student Exchange between MMIHS and Bournemouth University (UK)

The world is rapidly becoming a smaller place with globalisation occurring everywhere. The process of internationalising higher education institutions through partnerships like ours, brings benefits to both MMIHS and BU and to both staff and students. For the latter, it offers new ideas, alternative ways of thinking, insights in the other people’s value systems and cultures, etc. It equips students and staff with knowledge, skills and dispositions to work in culturally diverse and international contexts, providing them with a wider diversity of knowledge and greater understanding of global issues and challenges. In short, the partnership offers many opportunities to gain new experiences, explore new sources and perspectives, and improve their cross-cultural capabilities and, ultimately, their employability

Patient and Public Engagement in Health Research: Learning from UK Ideas

One of the new ideas in health and social care research in the UK is around involving patients and the general public in all aspects of research. This paper led by seven MSc students from Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences in Nepal. They attended Bournemouth University modules as part of the Erasmus+ exchange programme in 2022 and worked with two UK-based academics. The authors outline the thinking behind this process, and offer an example. They address its importance in improving the quality of the research as well as adding value to its societal relevance.

Gothic in Comics and Children’s Literature: An Interview with Julia Round


 Julia Round is Associate Professor in English and Comics Studies at Bournemouth University, where she teaches various courses including English and Literary Media. Her main fields of research are the gothic comics and children’s literature. She’s one of the editors of the peer-reviewed academic journal Studies in Comics, as well as one of the organizers of the annual International Graphic Novel and Comics Conference. She’s also one of the editors of the book series Encapsulations from Nebraska University Press. Besides publishing numerous essays, she’s published the monographs Gothic in Comics and Graphic Novels: A Critical Approach (2014) and Gothic for Girls: Misty and British Comics (2019). She’s also an author of short comics that have been published in anthologies and fanzines, including ‘Doll Parts’ (with art by Catriona Laird), ‘The Haunting of Julia Round’ (with art by Letty Wilson) and ‘Borrowed Time’ (with art by Morgan Brinksman). Case Study: Enhancing the Learning Experiences of BAME Students at a University: The University Role

This case study examines the role of a university and academics in improving the learning experiences of BAME students, drawing on student-led participatory action research with Social Sciences BAME students at Bournemouth University (BU henceforth) between 2018-2020. The paper seeks to illuminate the critical role of the university by focusing on three inter-related facets at macro, meso and micro levels (Bronfenbrenner, 1979): financial and temporal/spatial support for students; collaboration between academic staff at departmental and faculty levels to address any issues that arose from student meetings; and its consequential impact on student wellbeing, self-worth and their overall engagement in their learning. I argue that to achieve the utmost improvement in BAME students’ learning experiences, these different levels of the support system need to work together. I further argue that maximising the potentiality of ‘ethnic capital’ (Modood, 2004) could be a powerful resource that could bring significant changes to the experiences of BAME students and subsequent outcomes of their learning during and after university.

Interview with Charlie Hargood

Dr Charlie Hargood is a Principal Academic in Games Technology in the Department of Creative Technology at Bournemouth University, UK. He has long been a contributor to Hypertext research and the ACM Hypertext Conference where he has twice won ACM SIGWeb's Engelbart Award. He is also Information Director for the ACM SIGWeb executive committee, and organiser for the Narrative and Hypertext Workshop (NHT) - the longest running workshop series at ACM Hypertext. Charlie's particular research expertise is in narrative systems which he has long explored as Hypertextual models of story representation, and novel Hypertextual mediums such as locative narrative.

Sexing white 2D footprints using convolutional neural networks.

Footprints are left, or obtained, in a variety of scenarios from crime scenes to anthropological investigations. Determining the sex of a footprint can be useful in screening such impressions and attempts have been made to do so using single or multi landmark distances, shape analyses and via the density of friction ridges. Here we explore the relative importance of different components in sexing two-dimensional foot impressions namely, size, shape and texture. We use a machine learning approach and compare this to more traditional methods of discrimination. Two datasets are used, a pilot data set collected from students at Bournemouth University (N = 196) and a larger data set collected by podiatrists at Sheffield NHS Teaching Hospital (N = 2677). Our convolutional neural network can sex a footprint with accuracy of around 90% on a test set of N = 267 footprint images using all image components, which is better than an expert can achieve. However, the quality of the impressions impacts on this success rate, but the results are promising and in time it may be possible to create an automated screening algorithm in which practitioners of whatever sort (medical or forensic) can obtain a first order sexing of a two-dimensional footprint.
