An asymptotic depth function for the sound field in water having arbitrary velocity profiles and surface and bottom reflections is obtained by the extended WKB approximation and connection formulas at turning points. This problem is identical to the quantum mechanical one except for the boundary conditions. Results of applications of the method to problems of interest in underwater acoustics are presented. The surface duct leakage is described as a function of the sound velocity profile and the boundary reflection coefficients.
