The three ϒ ( 1 S , 2 S , 3 S ) states can be separated using the CMS experimental apparatus via their dimuon decays in both pp and heavy-ion collisions. A suppression of the ϒ ( 1 S ) , ϒ ( 2 S ) and ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons is observed in PbPb collisions at s N N = 2.76 TeV , compared to the yield in pp collisions scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon–nucleon collisions. Furthermore, a suppression of the excited ϒ states has been measured with respect to the ϒ ground state, expressed as a double ratio [ ϒ ( n S ) / ϒ ( 1 S ) ] PbPb / [ ϒ ( n S ) / ϒ ( 1 S ) ] p p with n = 2 , 3 , and 2 + 3 . The centrality dependence of the double ratio, as well as the nuclear modification factors ( R A A ) of the ϒ ( 1 S ) and ϒ ( 2 S ) states are presented as a function of collision centrality, based on the analysis of the full data sample collected during the 2011 PbPb run, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 150 μ b − 1 .
