Absolutely Disruptive: An Introduction to Josephson Storm’s Metamodernism Book Review Symposium

Abstract The present article offers an introduction to the Book Review Symposium dedicated to Josephson Storm’s ambitious Metamodernism: The Future of Theory (2021). Inspired by Josephson Storm’s interest in the art scene conversation about method and theory, this preamble incorporates Alan Moore’s reflections from the early 2000s on the necessity to move beyond postmodernism and proceeds to present both the main pillars of Josephson Storm’s theoretical proposal and the key concepts from the commentaries submitted by the participants to this symposium (Mattias Brand, Carmen Becker, Andrea Bardin and Marco Ferrari, and Andrea Maria Nencini). The confusing existence of a preceding, and conflictual, theoretical understanding of metamodernism is also briefly discussed, and its potential impact on the academic disciplines that study religion(s) highlighted.

Book Review Symposium: Women Abuse in Rural Places

In this review symposium, four readers present their views on Walter DeKeseredy’s book, Woman Abuse in Rural Places. These reviews emerged from an author meets critics session at the 2022 annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology (Atlanta, Georgia). The four reviewers were: (1) Venessa Garcia, Criminal Justice Program, New Jersey City University; (2) Deena A. Isom, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, University of South Carolina; (3) Jessica Peterson, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Southern Oregon University; and (4) Ralph Weisheit, Department of Criminal Justice Sciences, Illinois State University. Walter DeKeseredy then addresses the various comments of the reviewers with a response titled “If I had to do it again”.

Review symposium: Beyond presidentialism and parliamentarism

Steffen Ganghof’s Beyond Presidentialism and Parliamentarism: Democratic Design and the Separation of Powers (Oxford University Press, 2021) posits that “in a democracy, a constitutional separation of powers between the executive and the assembly may be desirable, but the constitutional concentration of executive power in a single human being is not” (Ganghof, 2021). To consider, examine and theorise about this, Ganghof urges engagement with semi-parliamentarism. As explained by Ganghof, legislative power is shared between two democratically legitimate sections of parliament in a semi-parliamentary system, but only one of those sections selects the government and can remove it in a no-confidence vote. Consequently, power is dispersed and not concentrated in the hands of any one person, which, Ganghof argues, can lead to an enhanced form of parliamentary democracy. In this book review symposium, George Tsebelis, Michael Thies, José Antonio Cheibub, Rosalind Dixon and Daniel Bogéa review Steffen Ganghof’s book and engage with the author about aspects of research design, case selection and theoretical argument. This symposium arose from an engaging and constructive discussion of the book at a seminar hosted by Texas A&M University in 2022. We thank Prof José Cheibub (Texas A&M) for organising that seminar and Dr Anna Fruhstorfer (University of Potsdam) for initiating this book review symposium.

Forum: Theology and the Anthropology of Christian Life

We are glad to launch a new format of a dialogic book review symposium with Joel Robbins’s (2020) Theology and the Anthropology of Christian Life. With contributions from anthropologist Minna Opas, theologian Mika Vähäkangas, and a response from Robbins, this is the first instalment of dialogic encounters on books that cross disciplinary boundaries. Similar to Robbins’s (2020: 13) notion of ‘transformative dialogue’ between anthropology and theology, this new format takes dialogue to be at the heart of the art and practice of book reviewing. In future instalments, we invite scholars from different disciplines to comment on books written by anthropologists from the point of view of their interdisciplinary transformative potential, including the limits of this potential to be actualized in the present. At the core, we are interested in anthropological concept formation at the interface of fieldwork and other disciplines, and how anthropological concepts have influence beyond anthropological theory.
