Thermodynamics of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer at Tricopper μ-Oxo/Hydroxo/Aqua Complexes.

Multicopper oxidases (MCOs) utilize a tricopper active site to reduce dioxygen to water through 4H+ 4e- proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). Understanding the thermodynamics of PCET at a tricopper cluster is essential for elucidating how MCOs harness the oxidative power of O2 while mitigating oxidative damage. In this study, we determined the O-H bond dissociation free energies (BDFEs) and pKa values of a series of tricopper hydroxo and tricopper aqua complexes as synthetic models of the tricopper site in MCOs. Tricopper intermediates on the path of alternating electron and proton transfer (ET-PT-ET-PT-ET) have modest BDFE(O-H) values in the range of 53.0-57.1 kcal/mol. In contrast, those not on the path of ET-PT-ET-PT-ET display much higher (78.1 kcal/mol) or lower (44.7 kcal/mol) BDFE(O-H) values. Additionally, the pKa of bridging OH and OH2 motifs increase by 8-16 pKa units per oxidation state. The same oxidation state changes have a lesser impact on the pKa of N-H motif in the secondary coordination sphere, with an increase of ca. 5 pKa units per oxidation state. The steeper pKa increase of the tricopper center promotes proton transfer from the secondary coordination sphere. Overall, our study shed light on the PCET pathway least prone to decomposition, elucidating why tricopper centers are an optimal choice for promoting efficient oxygen reduction reaction.

Tuning the Thermochemistry and Reactivity of a Series of Cu-Based 4H+/4e- Electron-Coupled-Proton Buffers.

Electron-coupled-proton buffers (ECPBs) store and deliver protons and electrons in a reversible fashion. We have recently reported an ECPB based on Cu and a redox-active ligand that promoted 4H+/4e- reversible transformations (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2022, 144, 16905). Herein, we report a series of Cu-based ECPBs in which the ability of these to accept and/or donate H• equivalents can be tuned via ligand modification. The thermochemistry of the 4H+/4e- ECPB equilibrium was determined using open-circuit potential measurements. The reactivity of the ECPBs against proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reagents was also analyzed, and the results obtained were rationalized based on the thermochemical parameters. Experimental and computational analysis of the thermochemistry of the H+/e- transfers involved in the 4H+/4e- ECPB transformations found substantial differences between the stepwise (namely, BDFE1, BDFE2, BDFE3, and BDFE4) and average bond dissociation free energy values (BDFEavg.). Our analysis suggests that this "redox unleveling" is critical to promoting the disproportionation and ligand-exchange reactions involved in the 4H+/4e- ECPB equilibria. The difference in BDFEavg. within the series of Cu-based ECPBs was found to arise from a substantial change in the redox potential (E1/2) upon modification of the ligand scaffold, which is not fully compensated for by a change in the acidity/basicity (pKa), suggesting "thermochemical decompensation".

Computational screening of PCP-type pincer ligands for Mo-catalyzed nitrogen fixation

Abstract Computational screening of N-heterocyclic carbene-based PCP-type pincer ligands (PCP = 1,3-bis(di-tert-buthylphosphinomethyl)benzimidazole-2-ylidene) has been performed for the design of molybdenum-based molecular catalysts for nitrogen fixation. Previously, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the introduction of electron-donating/withdrawing substituents to the original PCP ligand is a promising way to control the catalytic activity. Here, we investigate electronic and energetic properties of nitrogenous Mo intermediates bearing 40 substituted PCP ligands [MoI(NHx)(R-PCP)] (x = 1 to 3) that are involved in the rate-determining step in our proposed catalytic mechanism. Electron-withdrawing substituents enhance the π-accepting ability of R-PCP and effectively stabilize the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the corresponding Mo–nitride (Mo≡N) complexes, which is expected to be advantageous for the transformation of the nitride N atom via proton-coupled electron transfer. The introduction of strong electron-withdrawing substituents to the PCP ligand also increases the N–H bond energy of [MoI(NHx)(R-PCP)] evaluated using the bond dissociation free energy and the bond dissociation enthalpy. As a result of the computational screening, we newly propose an alternative strategy for designing PCP ligands with high π-accepting ability: the extension of the π-conjugated system of the PCP ligand by introducing fused benzene rings.

Evaluation of Organic Hydride/Acid Pairs as a Type of Thermodynamic-Potential-Regulated Multisite Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reagents.

Organic hydride/acid pairs have been reported as multisite proton-coupled electron transfer (MS-PCET) reagents in reductive MS-PCET reactions recently. Since the key step for an organic hydride/acid pair acting as an MS-PCET reagent is a chemical process of the organic hydride/acid pair releasing a formal hydrogen atom, the bond dissociation free energy of the organic hydride/acid pair releasing a formal hydrogen atom is a valuable thermodynamic parameter for objectively evaluating the thermodynamic potential for an organic hydride/acid pair to act as an MS-PCET reagent. Now, organic hydride/acid pairs of 216 organic hydrides have been demonstrated to be a potential type of thermodynamically potential-regulated MS-PCET reagent. Without a doubt, organic hydride/acid pairs reflect the change of N-substituted organic hydrides from simple hydride reductants to thermodynamically-regulated MS-PCET reagents, which could significantly expand the availability of novel MS-PCET reagents.

Impact of Surface Ligand Identity and Density on the Thermodynamics of H Atom Uptake at Polyoxovanadate-Alkoxide Surfaces.

An understanding of how molecular structure influences the thermodynamics of H atom transfer is critical to designing efficient catalysts for reductive chemistries. Herein, we report experimental and theoretical investigations summarizing structure-function relationships of polyoxovanadate-alkoxides that influence bond dissociation free energies of hydroxide ligands located at the surface of the cluster. We evaluate the thermochemical descriptors of O-H bond strength for a series of clusters, namely [V6O13-x(OH)x(TRIOLR)2]-2 (x = 2, 4, 6; R = NO2, Me) and [V6O11-x(OMe)2(OH)x(TRIOLNO2)2]-2, via computational analysis and open circuit potential measurements. Our findings reveal that modifications to the TRIOL ligand (e.g., changing from the previously reported electron withdrawing nitro-backed ligand to the electron-donating methyl variant) have limited influence on the strength of surface O-H bonds as a result of near complete thermodynamic compensation in these systems (i.e., correlated changes in redox potential and cluster basicity). In contrast, changes in surface density of alkoxide ligands via direct alkoxylation of the polyoxovanadate-alkoxide surface result in measurable increases in bond dissociation free energies of surface O-H bonds for the mixed-valent derivatives. Our findings indicate that the extent of (de)localization of electron density across the cluster core has an impact on the bond dissociation free energies of surface O-H bonds across all oxidation states of the assembly.

Selective Hydrogenation of Azobenzene to Hydrazobenzene via Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer from a Polyoxotungstate Cluster.

In this report, we describe proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactivity at the surface of the Keggin-type polyoxotungstate cluster [nBu4N]3[PWVI12O40] (PW12) in acetonitrile. Bond dissociation free energies (BDFEs) of the O-H groups generated upon reduction of PW12 in the presence of acid are determined through the construction of a potential-pKa diagram. The surface O-H bonds are found to be weak (BDFE(O-H)avg < 48 kcal mol-1), comparable to the BDFE of H2. This is consistent with the observed formation of H2 upon addition of a suitably strong organic acid, H2NPh2+ (pKaMeCN = 5.98), to the reduced form of the cluster. The one-electron reduced form of PW12 is isolated and used in conjunction with acid to realize the stoichiometric semihydrogenation of azobenzene via PCET from the surface of the reduced cluster.

DFT Insights into FEBID Stability: Condensed Study of Gold(I) Complexes with Phosphine Ligands

AbstractThis work examines the durability and responsiveness of XAuL precursors in the context of synthesizing Au‐nanomaterials. The study used density functional theory (DFT) simulations to look at the shapes, bond dissociation energies, and thermodynamic properties of a number of XAuL precursors. Within this framework, X denotes halogens Cl, Br, or I, whereas L denotes ligands such as PH3, PF3, PMe3, P(OMe)3, and P(NH2)3. Our investigations indicate that there is no discernible relationship between the lengths of XAuL bonds and binding energies. Small changes in bond dissociation free energy (▵BDG) serve as indicators of neutral precursors with low stability. The aforementioned precursors are essential for chemical vapor deposition. There are clear patterns that depend on the size of the halogen and the type of ligand when the ▵BDG values and interatomic distances in the XAuL precursors are looked at. Adding an electron to the precursor changes the length of the XAuL bond, which makes the ΔBDG values of anionic precursors lower than those of neutral precursors. The study is mostly about looking at how ligands L and XAu fragments interact with each other by looking at frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs). It has been shown that higher energy gap (ΔBDG) values lead to better interaction between the HOMO and LUMO orbitals of ligand L and XAu fragments. Furthermore, the research of electrophilicity emphasizes the significance of π‐back donation and the covalent energy involved in the bonding between XAu‐PR3. Thermodynamic study indicates that the dissociation processes exhibit more spontaneity under elevated temperatures and reduced pressures. The size of halogens affects spontaneity, with larger halogens exhibiting higher negative ▵BDG values. The study shows that IAuPMe3, BrAuPMe3, and ClAuPMe3 are stable starting materials for making gold nanoparticles using focused electron beam‐induced deposition (FEBID) in normal situations. This extensive study enhances our understanding of precursor design for Au‐nanofabrication by providing valuable insights into the stability, reactivity, and thermodynamic characteristics of XAuL precursors.

A new method for determining the intrinsic resistance energy of H‐atom transfer reaction and structure–activity relationship of H‐donating ability

AbstractThe intrinsic resistance energy ΔG≠XH/X of H‐donor XH in hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reaction is usually used to evaluate the kinetic H‐donating ability. In this article, a new method for determining ΔG≠XH/X of H‐donor in HAT reaction was proposed by the definition of thermo‐kinetic parameter ΔG≠o (XH) = 1/2[ΔG≠XH/X + ΔGo (XH)]. ΔG≠o (XH) is the characteristic physical parameter of XH to describe the H‐donating ability in a chemical reaction during a certain reaction time, ΔGo (XH) is the bond dissociation free energy. The kinetic studies of HATs between 20 alcohols, ethers, alkanes and amines (XH) with cumyloxyl radical [PhC (CH3)2O•, CumO•] were researched, and ΔGo (XH), ΔG≠XH/X, and ΔG≠o (XH) were used to investigate the H‐donating abilities of the studied substrates in thermodynamics, kinetics, and HAT reaction. The effect of structures of XH on these three parameters, the structure–activity relationship, such as the influence of electronic, steric, polar and stereoelectronic effects of substituents, heteroatoms insertion in cycloalkanes, and cis–trans configurational isomerism on the H‐donating abilities were discussed in detail. This study not only provides a new method for determining ΔG≠XH/X but also systematically studies the factors affecting the H‐donating ability, laying a foundation for the selection, design, and synthesis of more efficient antioxidants.

Reactivity Prediction of Cu-Catalyzed Halogen Atom Transfer Reactions Using Data-Driven Techniques.

In catalysis, linear free energy relationships (LFERs) are commonly used to identify reaction descriptors that enable the prediction of outcomes and the design of more effective catalysts. Herein, LFERs are established for the reductive cleavage of the C(sp3)-X bond in alkyl halides (RX) by Cu complexes. This reaction represents the activation step in atom transfer radical polymerization and atom transfer radical addition/cyclization. The values of the activation rate constant, kact, for 107 Cu complex/RX couples in 5 different solvents spanning over 13 orders of magnitude were effectively interpolated by the equation: log kact = sC(I + C + S), where I, C, and S are, respectively, the initiator, catalyst, and solvent parameters, and sC is the catalyst-specific sensitivity parameter. Furthermore, each of these parameters was correlated to relevant descriptors, which included the bond dissociation free energy of RX and its Tolman cone angle θ, the electron affinity of X, the radical stabilization energy, the standard reduction potential of the Cu complex, the polarizability parameter π* of the solvent, and the distortion energy of the complex in its transition state. This set of descriptors establishes the fundamental properties of Cu complexes and RX that determine their reactivity and that need to be considered when designing novel systems for atom transfer radical reactions. Finally, a multivariate linear regression (MLR) approach was adopted to develop an objective model that surpassed the predictive capability of the LFER equation. Thus, the MLR model was employed to predict kact values for >2000 Cu complex/RX pairs.

Predictive models for metal–metal bond dissociation free energies between aluminum(III) and a series of transition metal carbonyls

It was previously shown that the complex, LAl(Me)Fp [where L is a β-diketiminate and Fp = FeCp(CO)2] undergoes Al-Fe homolysis at ambient conditions, revealing a pair of metalloradical intermediates capable of cooperative small molecule activation. Towards expanding this platform to other Al–M derivatives, here we conducted an extensive computational screening of potential LAl(Me)M catalysts (where M is a series of common metal carbonyls) using DFT calculations combined with multivariate linear regression (MLR) analysis. Predictive models were established that anticipate the influences of different metals on Al–M bond dissociation free energies (BDFEs), utilizing electronic and steric parameters obtained from existing literature and from buried volume calculations (%Vbur), including a convenient model that can be applied without aid of further DFT calculations. Our investigations unveiled a partial correlation between Al–M BDFEs and M−H BDFEs, in that both depend on pKa and E° values of M. However, Al–M BDFEs demonstrate significant influences from both steric crowding and Al–M orbital overlap, neither of which contribute to M−H BDFE. By employing MLR to derive predictive models, extrapolation to other hypothetical complexes beyond the training set presented in this study is facilitated. Thus, our research will inform and enable the future design of sustainable catalytic processes involving heterobimetallic Al–M complexes with earth-abundant metals.

The complex worked as an excellent catalyst toward ammonia formation from the reaction of an atmospheric pressure of dinitrogen with samarium diiodide as a reductant and water as a proton source under ambient reaction conditions, where up to 3580 equivalents of ammonia were formed based on the molybdenum atom of the catalyst. The catalytic activity was significantly improved by one order of magnitude larger than that observed when using the complex before modification.

Characterization and Reactivity Studies of Mononuclear Tetrahedral Copper(II)-Halide Complexes.

Structures, physicochemical properties, and reactivity of the whole series of copper(II)-halide complexes (1X; X = F, Cl, Br, and I) were examined using a TMG3tach tridentate supporting ligand consisting of cis,cis-1,3,5-triaminocyclohexane (tach) and N,N,N',N'-tetramethylguanidine (TMG). The tach ligand framework with the bulky and strongly electron-donating TMG substituents enforces the copper(II) complexes to take a tetrahedral geometry, as inferred from the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, exhibiting relatively large gz and small Az values. The electronic absorption spectra of 1X agreed with the simulation spectra obtained by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations on a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry. 1I and 1Br gradually decomposed to generate the corresponding copper(I) complex and halide radical X•, and in the case of 1Br, intramolecular hydroxylation of a methyl group of the TMG substituent took place under aerobic conditions, which may be caused by the reaction of the generated copper(I) complex and dioxygen (O2), generating a reactive oxygen species. 1X except 1I showed hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) reactivity toward 1,4-cyclohexadiene (CHD), where 1F exhibited the highest reactivity with a second-order rate constant as 1.4 × 10-3 M-1 s-1 at 25 °C. Such an HAA reactivity can be attributed to the higher basicity of F- and/or large bond dissociation free energy of conjugate acid H-F as well as the unstable copper(II) electronic state in the tetrahedral geometry.

Structure–activity relationship of alkanes and alkane derivatives for the abilities of C(sp3)H bonds toward their H‐atom transfer reactions

AbstractHydrogen atom‐donating ability of alkane is a research hotspot and has been extensively studied. In this article, the second‐order rate constants of 20 hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions between aliphatic, benzylic, and allylic alkanes and alkane derivatives with CumO• in acetonitrile at 298 K were studied. The thermo‐kinetic parameter ΔG≠o(XH), bond dissociation free energy ΔGo(XH), and kinetic intrinsic resistance energy ΔG≠XH/X were determined and used to evaluate the H‐donating abilities of these substrates in thermodynamics, kinetics, and HAT reactions. Structure–activity relationships including the factors (electronic, stereoelectronic, and steric effects), introduction of CH3, Ph, or Cl in alkanes, and introduction of N atom in cycloalkane were discussed carefully. The results show that the order of H‐donating abilities is allylic alkanes &gt; cycloalkanes &gt; chain alkanes ≈ benzylic alkanes &gt; haloalkanes. The introduction of CH3, Ph, or Cl in alkanes and the introduction of N atom to the carbon ring reduce ΔGo(XH) but increase ΔG≠XH/X, and ΔG≠o(XH) is the synthesis result of these two parameters. The reliability of ΔG≠o(XH) was verified, and the accuracy and reliability of the parameters were proved. Through the study of this paper, not only the ΔGo(XH), ΔG≠XH/X, and ΔG≠o(XH) of these alkanes and derivatives in HAT reaction can be quantitatively evaluated but also the structure–activity relationship of alkane is clearly researched.

Enhanced Understanding of Structure-Function Relationships for Oxomanganese(IV) Complexes.

A series of manganese(II) and oxomanganese(IV) complexes supported by neutral, pentadentate ligands with varied equatorial ligand-field strength (N3pyQ, N2py2I, and N4pyMe2) were synthesized and then characterized using structural and spectroscopic methods. On the basis of electronic absorption spectroscopy, the [MnIV(O)(N4pyMe2)]2+ complex has the weakest equatorial ligand field among a set of similar MnIV-oxo species. In contrast, [MnIV(O)(N2py2I)]2+ shows the strongest equatorial ligand-field strength for this same series. We examined the influence of these changes in electronic structure on the reactivity of the oxomanganese(IV) complexes using hydrocarbons and thioanisole as substrates. The [MnIV(O)(N3pyQ)]2+ complex, which contains one quinoline and three pyridine donors in the equatorial plane, ranks among the fastest MnIV-oxo complexes in C-H bond and thioanisole oxidation. While a weak equatorial ligand field has been associated with high reactivity, the [MnIV(O)(N4pyMe2)]2+ complex is only a modest oxidant. Buried volume plots suggest that steric factors dampen the reactivity of this complex. Trends in reactivity were examined using density functional theory (DFT)-computed bond dissociation free energies (BDFEs) of the MnIIIO-H and MnIV ═ O bonds. We observe an excellent correlation between MnIV═O BDFEs and rates of thioanisole oxidation, but more scatter is observed between hydrocarbon oxidation rates and the MnIIIO-H BDFEs.

Experimental and Computational Determination of a M-Cl Homolytic Bond Dissociation Free Energy: Mn(III)Cl-Mediated C-H Cleavage and Chlorination.

This study confirms the hypothesis that [MnCl3(OPPh3)2] (1) and acetonitrile-solvated MnCl3 (i.e., [MnCl3(MeCN)x]) can be used as synthons to prepare Mn(III) chloride complexes with facially coordinating ligands. This was achieved through the preparation and characterization of six new {MnIIICl} complexes using anionic ligands TpH (tris(pyrazolyl)borate) and TpMe (tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate). The MnIII-chloride dissociation and association equilibria (Keq) and MnIII/II reduction potentials were quantified in DCM. These two thermochemical parameters (Keq and E1/2), in addition to the known Cl-atom reduction potential in DCM, enabled the quantification of the Mn-Cl bond dissociation (homolysis) free energy of 21 and 23 ± 7 kcal/mol at room temperature for R = H and Me, respectively. These are in reasonable agreement with the bond dissociation free energy (BDFEM-Cl) of 34 ± 6 kcal/mol calculated using density functional theory. The BDFEM-Cl of 1 was also calculated (25 ± 6 kcal/mol). These energies were used in predictive C-H bond reactivity.

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer at the Surface of Polyoxovanadate-Alkoxide Clusters.

ConspectusProton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is a fundamental process involved in all areas of chemistry, with relevance to biological transformations, catalysis, and emergent energy storage and conversion technologies. Early observations of PCET were reported by Meyer and co-workers in 1981 while investigating the proton dependence of reduction of a molecular ruthenium oxo complex. Since that time, this conceptual framework has grown to encompass an enormous scope of charge transfer and compensation reactions. In this Account, we will discuss ongoing efforts in the Matson Laboratory to understand the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics of PCET processes at the surface of a series of Lindqvist-type polyoxovanadate clusters. This project aims to provide atomistic resolution of net H atom uptake and transfer at the surfaces of transition-metal oxide materials.First, we discuss our efforts aimed at understanding PCET at metal oxide surfaces using the Lindqvist-type polyoxovanadate-alkoxide (POV-alkoxide) cluster [nBu4N]2[V6O13(TRIOLNO2)2]. These clusters reversibly bind H atom equivalents at bridging oxide sites, mirroring the proposed uptake and release of e-/H+ pairs at transition-metal oxide surfaces. Summarized results include the measurement of bond dissociation free energies of surface hydroxide moieties (BDFE(O-H)) as well as mechanistic analyses that verify concerted proton electron transfer as the operative pathway for PCET at the surface of POV-alkoxide clusters.Next, we discuss net proton and H atom uptake at the surface of reduced variants of the Lindqvist-type POV-alkoxide cluster, [V6O7(OR)12]n (R = Me, Et; n = -2, -1, 0, + 1). In the case of these low-valent POV-alkoxide clusters, nucleophilic bridging sites are kinetically inhibited by functionalization of the cluster surface with organic ligands. This molecular modification enables site-selectivity in proton and H atom uptake to terminal oxide sites. The impact of reaction site and cluster electronics on reaction driving force of PCET is explored, with core electron density playing a critical role in dictating thermodynamics of H atom uptake and transfer. Additional work described here contrasts the kinetics of PCET at terminal oxide sites to the reactivity observed at bridging oxides in POV-alkoxide clusters.Overall, this Account summarizes our foundational knowledge regarding the assessment of PCET reactivity at the surfaces of molecular metal oxides. Drawing analogies between POV-alkoxide clusters and nanoscopic metal oxide materials provide design principles for the advancement of materials applications with atomic precision. These complexes are additionally highlighted as tunable redox mediators in their own right; our studies demonstrate how cluster surface reactivities can be optimized by modifying electronic structure and surface functionalities.

Enabling Molecular-Level Computational Description of Redox and Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactions of Samarium Diiodide.

Samarium diiodide (SmI2, Kagan's reagent) is a one-electron reductant with applications ranging from organic synthesis to nitrogen fixation. Highly inaccurate relative energies of redox and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions of Kagan's reagent are predicted by pure and hybrid density functional approximations (DFAs) when only scalar relativistic effects are accounted for. Calculations including spin-orbit coupling (SOC) show that the SOC-induced differential stabilization of the Sm(III) versus the Sm(II) ground state is little affected by ligands and solvent, and a standard SOC correction derived from atomic energy levels is thus included in the reported relative energies. With this correction, selected meta-GGA and hybrid meta-GGA functionals predict Sm(III)/Sm(II) reduction free energies to within 5 kcal/mol of the experiment. Considerable discrepancies remain, however, in particular for the PCET-relevant O-H bond dissociation free energies, for which no regular DFA is within 10 kcal/mol of the experiment or CCSD(T). The main cause behind these discrepancies is the delocalization error, which leads to excess ligand-to-metal electron donation and destabilizes Sm(III) versus Sm(II). Fortunately, static correlation is unimportant for the present systems, and the error may be reduced by including information from virtual orbitals via perturbation theory. Contemporary, parametrized double-hybrid methods offer promise as companions to experimental campaigns in the further development of the chemistry of Kagan's reagent.

Gradient Alloyed Quantum Dots for Photocatalytic Lignin Valorization via Proton Coupled Electron Transfer

In the field of photocatalytic lignin valorization, simultaneously fulfilling the requirements of broad light harvesting and strong redox ability has been a key challenge for single binary quantum dot (QD) photocatalyst systems. In order to address the problem, gradient alloyed QDs with funnel-shaped energy structures have been developed. The gradient energy level increases the photon absorption range, while the periphery energy bands at the funnel edge are sufficiently wide to preserve effective redox capacity. In this work, the gradient alloyed QD photocatalyst along with proton donors have been employed in enhancing the efficiency and selectivity of β-O-4 bond cleavage in lignin, realizing yields of target aromatic products phenol and acetophenone to increase up to 70% and 65%, respectively. The mechanism of conversion from the ketone intermediate to target products and how to choose suitable proton donors have been systematically investigated. We propose a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) photocatalytic strategy through producing a Cα radical from ketone with the help of acid possessing appropriate bond dissociation free energy (BDFE) and strong electronic transmission facilitating ability. The knowledge acquired in this work is useful for designing photocatalysts and proton donors that can effectively cleave bonds in lignin via the PCET mechanism.
