Unveiling the fundamentals of flow boiling heat transfer enhancement on structured surfaces.

Micro- and nanostructured surfaces offer the potential to enhance two-phase heat transfer. However, the mechanisms behind these enhancements are not well-understood due to insufficient diagnostic methods, leading to reliance on trial-and-error surface development. We introduce in situ boroscopy to investigate microscale bubble dynamics during flow boiling nucleation and subsequent flow regime development. This method was applied in saturated flow boiling experiments within chemically etched aluminum and copper tubes. Although the surfaces have self-similar surface structures, our findings revealed varied heat transfer coefficient enhancements, with increases of up to 391% on aluminum and 41% on copper. Using boroscopy, we identified key mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement. We further used mercury porosimetry to determine the impact of pore size distribution on thermal performance. The boroscopy technique introduced here not only elucidates the underlying processes of flow boiling heat transfer enhancement but also has potential applications for the study of other two-phase phenomena.

Enhanced Phase Change Heat Transfer with Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) Printed Pit and Pillar (Pi2) Arrays

Phase change heat transfer, crucial in thermal management systems, can be significantly enhanced through optimized surface structures. This study investigates pool boiling heat transfer enhancement using 3D printed structures with carefully designed pillar and pit geometries. We present a novel approach combining the Dual Rise model with separate liquid–vapor pathways to improve Critical Heat Flux (CHF) and Heat Transfer Coefficients (HTC). Using copper-infused Polylactic Acid (PLA) filaments, we created and sintered structured surfaces featuring pit-assisted nucleation sites, interpillar spacing for vapor escape, and pillar roughness for enhanced liquid supply. Experiments with deionized water and ethanol under atmospheric pressure demonstrated substantial improvements over plain surfaces: water showed an 87% increase in CHF and 39% in maximum HTC, while ethanol exhibited even greater enhancements of 122% in CHF and 61% in HTC. These improvements are attributed to the synergistic effects of optimized surface geometry and separated liquid–vapor pathways, reducing counterflow resistance and improving hydrodynamic stability. A theoretical framework based on the Dual Rise model explains these enhancements, providing insights into coupled capillary action and hemiwicking effects in boiling heat transfer. The study introduces predictive models for CHF and HTC enhancement, offering valuable tools for future design optimization in applications ranging from electronics cooling to power plant thermal management and advanced heat exchangers.

Two-phase closed thermosiphon with grooved the evaporator section applied for low-grade energy recovery: Thermo-hydrodynamic performance and potentials

High thermal conductivity and simple structure of two-phase closed thermosyphons (TPCTs) facilitate it extensively applied in low-grade thermal recovery, such like geothermal and solar energy exploitation. In present work, by incorporating threaded grooves into the evaporator section of the TPCTs, heat transfer performance could be significantly enhanced. Thermal transport mechanism of thermosyphons with various threaded groove structures was comprehensively investigated, and corresponding thermo-hydrodynamic performance was modelled through CFD/VOF simulations. Numerical procedures were validated well after comparison with experimental ones felled within 5.0 %. Under various heating power levels and filling ratios, heat transfer performance of thermosyphons with threaded grooves evidently surpassed that of smooth thermosyphons. Depending on delicate numerical results, critical point at 33 % filling ratio and 90 W heating power were confirmed that total thermal resistance of the grooved thermosyphon decreased almost close to 4.6 %. Furthermore, deviating from that critical point, higher heating power and lower filling ratio instead confined heat transfer performance of the threaded TPCT, which was primarily due to the rate of bubble generation and growth being significantly was slower than its detachment rate from the wall. In addition, heat and mass transfer performance of thermosyphons with threaded grooves of various pitches and apex angles were further analyzed under various conditions. Our results indicated that, when the groove apex angle turned to 90°, overall thermal transportation capability of the TPCT achieved optimal, with a decline in thermal resistance of up to 6.5 % compared to thermosyphons with smaller apex angles. Apex angle primarily affected the number of nucleation sites and the bubble detachment rate. Additionally, as the screw pitch decreased, boiling heat transfer enhancement, leading to more robust boiling heat transfer of TPCTs. Under high heating power, thermosyphons with larger screw pitch exhibited superior heat transfer performance. Overall, this innovative TPCTs with threaded grooves could be well applied in low-grade energy exploitation, particularly like as geothermal and solar energy fields.

Enhanced pool boiling heat transfer by coupling multiscale structures and mixed wettability

With the extensive application of boiling heat transfer in engineering, enhanced boiling heat transfer has become a prominent research focus. Micro/nanostructures and surface wettability are pivotal factors affecting the pool boiling heat transfer performance. In this paper, the effects of the mini-pillar, micro-nano composite structure, and mixed wettability on boiling heat transfer performance were investigated. The experimental outcomes indicate that the critical heat flux (CHF) and the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) on the mini-pillar structured surface (S2) are improved significantly. Compared to S2, the boiling heat transfer performance near the CHF is further enhanced on the surface with micro/nanostructures atop mini-pillars (S3). Furthermore, the size of the hydrophobic spots atop the mini-pillars also profoundly influences the boiling performance, by decreasing the wall superheat significantly. A synergistic pool boiling heat transfer enhancement is achieved by constructing micro/nanostructures on the top of the mini-pillar and controlling the diameter of hydrophobic spots at 0.5 mm atop the mini-pillar (S5 surface), with the maximum HTC and CHF of 230.00 kW/(m2·K) and 2360.20 kW/m2, respectively. These values are 3.82 times and 1.88 times higher than those of the smooth copper surface, respectively.

Unveiling the underlying physics of two-phase boiling heat transfer enhancement through shearing of coalescing bubbles

The upcoming energy scarcity problem has driven research toward developing energy-efficient two-phase heat exchangers essential for various cooling applications. This research is rooted in the principles of pool boiling, essential for effective heat transfer in various heat exchangers. A well-known reported problem in heat exchangers is the dry-out phenomena of heated surfaces due to bubble coalescence. To tackle this undesirable problem, an innovative technique has been introduced in this study, which involves the shearing of bubbles through liquid jet impingement over the heated surface. The study has been carried out in a two-dimensional domain numerically, in the wall superheat range of 9–16 K. To study the underlying physics involved in this pool boiling phenomenon, the bubble dynamics parameters such as departure frequency, bubble diameter, cold spot (bubble base) temperature, and vapor volume fraction have been analyzed. The results show that with the jet shearing effect, a maximum enhancement of 25% in heat transfer rate is observed at higher wall superheat. The investigation also highlights that the liquid jet enhances vapor volume fraction, indicating enhanced steam generation, particularly an enhancement of 27% observed at elevated wall superheat. An early onset necking effect is also observed with the shearing effect, which leads to the formation of smaller bubbles with higher departure frequencies. This study is a benchmark to the fundamental physics of enhancing two-phase heat transfer through bubble shearing, offering promising insights for energy conservation in two-phase heat exchanger design, particularly within the context of pool boiling.

Boiling heat transfer characteristics of Cu–Al2O3 nanocomposite coating surfaces in distributed jet array impingement

Nanocomposite coating surfaces were electrodeposited on copper substrate at various current densities, deposition times and Al2O3 concentration to experimentally investigate the enhancement of boiling heat transfer of HFE-7100 under atmospheric pressure in a distributed jet array impingement. The surface structure topography and wettability were analyzed to explore their relation to boiling heat transfer enhancement and critical heat flux (CHF). An increase in both current density and deposition time led to a decrease followed by an increase in the wettability of the Cu– Al2O3 surface. Conversely, an increase in Al2O3 concentration resulted in decreased surface wettability. However, unlike pool boiling, jet impingement attenuated the impact of enhanced surface wettability on boiling heat transfer and CHF; instead, the microstructure on the surface was found to be closely linked to boiling heat transfer performance. The nanocomposite coating surfaces exhibited a 70 % higher maximum boiling heat transfer coefficient and 50 % higher CHF than those of smooth surfaces. Excessive Al2O3 concentration weakened the enhancement of heat transfer performance due to the inhibitory effect of Al2O3 nanoparticles on copper growth, leading to reduced micro-nano structures.

Flow boiling heat transfer enhancement of R134a in additively manufactured minichannels with microengineered surfaces

Additive manufacturing (AM) of metal components has opened new frontiers in heat transfer applications owing to its wide design freedom, which enables previously unexplored geometries with enhanced thermal performance to be developed. Open minichannels, on the other hand, consist of an extra manifold situated above the common flow channels, have been demonstrated to effectively reduce pressure drop and two-phase flow instability by mitigating backflow and maldistribution. In this paper, we synergized open minichannel design methodology with an ultrascalable surface microstructuring method for AM AlSi10Mg to improve flow boiling heat transfer performance of R134a. Experiments were conducted at the refrigerant mass flow rates (ṁ) of 0.005 kg/s to 0.01 kg/s (corresponding to mass fluxes of 73 to 146 kg/m2⋅s), and effective heat fluxes (qeff) of 1.8 kW/m2 to 141 kW/m2, by supplying 2 ℃ subcooled liquid to the minichannel inlet at saturation pressure (Psat) of 7.27 bar. The effects of heat flux, nucleation site density, mass flow rate and location of nucleation sites on the harmonic-average heat transfer coefficient (have) and pressure drop (ΔP) along the flow direction are investigated and compared against a conventionally manufactured (Al6061) counterpart. Our results show that the proposed etching process significantly improves the cooling performance of AM microstrucured minichannels, resulting in 210% higher have than Al6061 with negligible pressure drop penalty. The flow visualization results reveal a sequential order of nucleation site activation with increasing heat flux for microstructured open minichannels, which starts from the top of fins, followed by the corners and other three surfaces within the channels. This also results in the non-negligible effects of mass flow rate on cooling performance for microstructured minichannels, with approximately 10%–66% higher have at the lowest mass flow rate. Besides, the pressure drop penalty resulting from plain AM rough surface is also reduced by up to 13% through the proposed microstructuring process. In all, this work not only successfully identifies the dominant mechanisms in AM microstructured open minichannels, but it also provides useful minichannel design guidelines for high-performance two-phase cooling devices by AM.

Augmentation of pool boiling heat transfer using a microstructured aluminum surface fabricated by ultrasonic cavitation modification

Micro/nanostructure is a popular and effective structure for boiling heat transfer enhancement. In this study, ultrasonic cavitation modification is employed firstly to create microstructured aluminum surface for boiling heat transfer. With the impact of ultrasonic cavitation microjet, numerous micro pits and holes are formed on the surface in one step, constituting microstructures on aluminum plate. The saturated and subcooled pool boiling experiments are conducted at atmospheric pressure using ethanol as a working fluid. It is found that boiling hysteresis is apparent on the modified plate (MP) with the porous microstructure layer, which can be eliminated by periodically fluctuating heat flux. Under the stable saturated boiling condition, the maximum heat transfer coefficient is enhanced by 208% and wall superheat is decreased by 17.6 °C compared to the bare aluminum surface. Under subcooled boiling conditions, the boiling hysteresis on MP becomes weaker and the positive effect of microstructures on heat transfer performance is enhanced. The enhanced heat transfer coefficient of MP is mainly attributed to the increase of nucleation site density and further to the facilitation of bubble coalescence and departure, while the increased critical heat flux under subcooled boiling conditions is derived from the delaying occurrence of mushroom-like bubble.

Inherent scatter in pool boiling critical heat flux on reference surfaces

Evaluating boiling heat transfer enhancement depends on reliable reference values in the form of boiling curves and critical heat flux (CHF) values. Typically, the evaluation is performed in pool boiling conditions with water at atmospheric pressure. Literature includes a wide scatter in reference values, prompting this study to comprehensively evaluate boiling performance and CHF on reference surfaces to investigate the scatter's origin and set a definitive reference value. The study recorded 125 boiling curves and CHF values on nominally identical bare copper surfaces, establishing an average boiling curve and mean CHF value. Despite consistent experimental conditions, the recorded CHF values displayed significant variability with a mean CHF of 1112 ± 102 kW m−2 and a scatter from 902 kW m−2 (−19 % of average CHF) to 1339 kW m−2 (+25 % of average CHF). Using Rohsenow's correlation on the average boiling curve, a Csf factor of 0.0151 was obtained. The acquired CHF data is proposed to serve as a foundational benchmark for future research in enhancing pool boiling heat transfer.

Convective boiling heat transfer enhancement via femtosecond laser textured inclined microfeatures

Designing efficient cooling devices is crucial in a multitude of applications. Although cooling technologies have existed for decades, there is a lack of efficient heat dissipation methods, especially for space applications where thermal management devices must dissipate heat in reduced gravity and where convective boiling heat transfer is frequently employed. In this framework, we evaluate the change in bubble production for different types of surface textures produced on 200 µm thick 316L SS foils using a femtosecond laser. The investigated textures include microscale grooves and conical holes with tilted (= 45°) geometry. In addition, we also evaluate the effect of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS), which are sub-micron scale features fabricated by fs laser processing. The fluid used is PP1, a replacement of 3M™ FC-72 in heat transfer applications.

Pool boiling heat transfer enhancement induced by capillary wicking from radial gradient structures: A lattice boltzmann study

With the aid of a three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model built in the lab, the boiling state on the surface with gradient groove structure is investigated. The emphasize is placed on the impact brought by the wicking capability from the gradient structure on boiling performance. Besides the roles of distribution, number, width and depth of the grooves in the boiling process discussed in detail, the effects of wall superheat and wettability on boiling heat transfer are also explored. The results show that the wicking force generated by the gradient grooves can improve the boiling performance to an extent. Adjusting the geometry of grooves can enhance heat flux by up to 27.46% compared to a flat competitor. However, there exists a limit for the gradient defined in this study. Pursuing larger gradient values can extend the pit region at the center of surface. Upon TPCL being trapped within the pit region, it causes a negative effect on the boiling performance. The wicking capability has a positive relationship with surface wettability at a given groove number and size. In regards to the parametric effects of groove, the heat flux first increases but then declines with increasing the groove width at a fixed Jacob number. Despite the enhanced boiling performance with increasing the groove number and depth, the enhancement has an upper limit. But, the groove distribution has a minor effect on the boiling performance if TPCL is outside the pit region. This study provides quantitative evidence for the fact that wicking can promote boiling from the numerical view.

Microfluidic flow synthesis of Al2O3 nanofluids for efficient phase-change boiling heat transfer enhancement of electronic devices

Integrating microchannel flow boiling heat transfer with nanofluids is an effective method for cooling electronic devices. However, traditional methods have significant limitations in achieving facile synthesis of nanofluids with desirable properties. In this study, we propose a straightforward synthesis strategy using microfluidic reactors, which enables continuous and high-throughout synthesis of Al2O3 nanofluids with high purity and long-term stability. These nanofluids were found to enhance boiling heat transfer performance by delaying bubbles coalescence, increasing surface nucleation sites, improving the nucleation rate, and enhancing wettability by observation of the bubble behavior. Specifically, the critical heat flux (CHF) and corresponding heat transfer coefficient (HTC) are increased by a maximum of 32 % and 26 %, respectively, with negligible change in pressure drop. Moreover, the heat transfer performance deteriorates with increasing concentration of alumina nanofluids. These findings not only provide guidance of microchannel flow boiling with nanofluids, but also present valuable insights for the application of nanofluids in two-phase cooling systems for electronic devices.

Boiling heat transfer enhancement by a pair of elastic plates

Boiling heat transfer enhancement is essential for energy utilization. Traditional passive boiling enhancement methods aiming at bubble departure promotion usually depend on the modulation of surface tension force by surface modification. However, the limited driven force which benefits bubble departure cannot help the further improvement of heat transfer performance facing the increased heat dissipation amounts. In this paper, a novel boiling enhancement method using a pair of elastic plates (i.e., flexible parallel plates made of stainless steel) which promotes bubble departure by its swing effect for boiling on Pt wire in confined space is proposed and investigated. Compared to boiling with a pair of rigid plates (the thickness of 0.5 mm and the length of 12 mm), the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is improved by 55.8% of those with elastic plates (the thickness of 0.01 mm and the length of 12 mm).Periodic expansion and recovery process of plates coupling bubble dynamics is observed and studied. Experimental results indicate that elastic plates enhance boiling heat transfer performance significantly by smaller bubble departure diameter and lower wall superheat at the same wall heat flux. A correlation for bubble departure diameter prediction in elastic channel is proposed which matches well with experimental results. It is found that the stronger pumping effect induced by higher swing rate of plates enhance HTC significantly. The mechanism where expansion process of plates promotes bubble departure while its subsequent recovery process benefits the supply of the cold liquid is verified by simulation. This study proposes a new approach for boiling heat transfer enhancement by inducing the energy exchange between bubbles and elastic plates, and provides theoretical and technical support for boiling study based on flexible materials.

An improved wall boiling model for numerical simulation of subcooled flow boiling on a new hybrid micro/nanostructured surface

Previous studies have demonstrated that micro/nanostructured surfaces have great potential for heat transfer enhancement. However, simulating subcooled flow boiling on such surfaces is difficult owing to the lack of proper bubble characteristic parameter models, because most models used in flow boiling simulations were developed based on smooth surface conditions, which may limit their applications in engineering design. In this study, we improved upon one validated bubble characteristic parameter model suitable for subcooled flow boiling on smooth surfaces to adapt to the new hybrid micro/nanostructured surfaces proposed by Huang et al. [“Experimental investigation of a new hybrid structured surface for subcooled flow boiling heat transfer enhancement,” Appl. Therm. Eng. 192, 116929 (2021)]. The new bubble characteristic parameter model incorporates both basic correction terms to account for boiling bubble behaviors and ad hoc parameters to account for other unknown effects. Through sensitivity analysis and detailed calibration, the model was simplified to a set of correlations and only one constant parameter. With this improved model, subcooled flow boiling heat transfer simulations were conducted for three target surface specifications under conditions of 4–10 MW/m2 incident heat flux and 1–5 m/s flow velocity and the related heat-transfer mechanisms were further compared and discussed. The maximum error between the simulation and experimental results remains less than 3.5%, indicating that the established model has considerable accuracy in predicting the heat transfer performance for this type of micro/nanostructured surface in high-heat-flux engineering design applications. The heat transfer enhancement for subcooled flow boiling on this type of hybrid micro/nanostructured surface is greatly beneficial owing to its proper organization of convection, evaporation, and quenching heat transfer.

Microfluidic controllable production and morphology-independent phase-change heat transfer of boehmite nanofluids

Enhanced boiling heat transfer through nanofluids represents a significant approach to improving the cooling performance of electronic devices. However, the preparation of nanofluids poses challenges regarding production efficiency, morphology control, and structural stability. In addition, the underlying mechanism of flow boiling heat transfer enhancement of nanofluids, particularly changes in vapor behavior, remains a limited understanding. This study presents a facile and straightforward microfluidic strategy for the controllable synthesis of nanofluids toward efficient heat transfer enhancement. The microfluidic flow synthesis approach effectively enhances mixing efficiency at various flow rates, enabling continuous and high-throughput synthesis of boehmite nanofluids with different morphologies. The synthesized nanofluids exhibit long-term stability (>50 days) at room temperature. Both rod- and sphere-shaped nanofluids under equivalent concentrations can significantly improve critical heat flux (CHF) and maximum heat transfer coefficient (HTC) across various operating parameters, but with similar enhancement characteristics. Analysis of the period of bubble growth and burst, bubble size distributions, number of bubbles, and vapor phase fractions reveals that rod- and sphere-shaped nanofluids could shorten the period, enhance surface wetting, increase nucleation sites, and reduce bubble size efficiently and similarly. Furthermore, the effect of the concentration of nanofluid on phase-change heat transfer performance is systematically explored. 0.01 wt% nanofluid behaves the most remarkable enhancement, CHF and maximum HTC are improved by 24 % and 14.4 %, respectively. These findings not only shed new light on the controllable synthesis of functional nanomaterials but also provide important guidelines for the rational design of nanofluids for efficient two-phase cooling of electronic devices.

An Overview of the Recent Advances in Pool Boiling Enhancement Materials, Structrure, and Devices.

This review attempts to provide a comprehensive assessment of recent methodologies, structures, and devices for pool boiling heat transfer enhancement. Several enhancement approaches relating to the underlying fluid route and the capability to eliminate incipient boiling hysteresis, augment the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient, and improve the critical heat flux are assessed. Hence, this study addresses the most relevant issues related to active and passive enhancement techniques and compound enhancement schemes. Passive heat transfer enhancement techniques encompass multiscale surface modification of the heating surface, such as modification with nanoparticles, tunnels, grooves, porous coatings, and enhanced nanostructured surfaces. Also, there are already studies on the employment of a wide range of passive enhancement techniques, like displaced enhancement, swirl flow aids, and bi-thermally conductive surfaces. Moreover, the combined usage of two or more enhancement techniques, commonly known as compound enhancement approaches, is also addressed in this survey. Additionally, the present work highlights the existing scarcity of sufficiently large available databases for a given enhancement methodology regarding the influencing factors derived from the implementation of innovative thermal management systems for temperature-sensitive electronic and power devices, for instance, material, morphology, relative positioning and orientation of the boiling surface, and nucleate boiling heat transfer enhancement pattern and scale. Such scarcity means the available findings are not totally accurate and suitable for the design and implementation of new thermal management systems. The analysis of more than 100 studies in this field shows that all such improvement methodologies aim to enhance the nucleate boiling heat transfer parameters of the critical heat flux and nucleate heat transfer coefficient in pool boiling scenarios. Finally, diverse challenges and prospects for further studies are also pointed out, aimed at developing important in-depth knowledge of the underlying enhancement mechanisms of such techniques.

A Review on Flow Boiling Enhancement on Textured Surfaces

It is widely established that flow boiling, being a direct cooling technique also employing the latent heat of the fluid, has the potential to be more efficient than being useful in single-phase conventional cooling methods. This results in considerable potential for thermal management in many fields like microelectronics, space technology, thermal power plants, etc. The increasing demand for heat dissipation, consequent to component miniaturization, has pushed the development of new strategies for enhancing heat transfer efficiency, such as employment of functionalized surfaces. This review aims to describe in detail the current status of technology related to flow boiling heat transfer enhancement via micro/nanoscale surface functionalization. Key objectives are an increased nucleation site density and enhanced bubble dynamics. The vast majority of findings show favorable heat transfer performance, evidenced by an earlier onset of boiling (ONB), an improved flow boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC), and an ameliorated critical heat flux (CHF). Increased pressure drop is a serious concern in certain application cases. Nanoscale textures mainly enhance capillary wicking to nucleation sites, thus being more effective in combination with microscale textures that define fixed nucleation sites. Degradation effects need to be more thoroughly and systematically characterized for application cases. Extra effects related to the manufacturing process can be easily overlooked, but one should be aware of their possible existence when drawing conclusions. Finally, the implementation of enhanced surfaces in mainstream applications is hindered by the absence of general predictive design tools for different channel configurations/materials, fluids, and operating conditions. A more universal understanding of the basic mechanisms involving texture geometry is needed in this aspect.

Combined Effect of Structured Surface and Biosurfactant in Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Enhancement

An attempt has been made to explore the combined effect of structured surfaces (segmented finned surface and uniform cross-section surface) and Rhamnolipid biosurfactant to improve heat transfer rate in pool boiling. Experimental investigations were performed at normal atmospheric condition and till reaching critical heat flux. The results shows that the segmented finned surface has shown better heat transfer than plain surfaces, with a 200% increase in heat transfer coefficient. In contrast, a uniform cross-section surface showed an improvement in heat transfer coefficient of 107% over a plain surface. The reasons for better thermal performance in segmented finned configuration can be associated to the reduced surface tension of the working fluid increasing more nucleation sites. Additionally, better rewetting phenomena and bubble evolution from the segmented finned surface have also assisted in improving the heat transfer rate. Moreover, the pool boiling results of all the heating surfaces with surfactant solution is compared with pure water. It has been observed that all heating surfaces have performed better with surfactant solution compared to pure water. However, the CHF obtained on all heating surfaces with surfactant solution were lesser than pure water. Low CHF is due to the foamability of the surfactant solution.

Enhanced nucleate pool boiling heat transfer on CNTs-Cu nanoparticles-coated surfaces: Effects of sintering temperature and CNTs composition on pool boiling behavior

The present study involves the experimental investigation of pool boiling heat transfer characteristics on CNTs-Cu nanoparticles-coated heating surfaces. The advantages of coating the mixture of infinitesimal CNTs with Cu particles on the copper surface are to generate the active nucleation site density by porous structures and enhance the thermal conductivity of the heating surfaces. To explore the effects of sintering temperatures and CNTs composition on pool boiling behavior, we fabricated the boiling test sections under the sintering temperatures of 700, 750, and 800 °C for four different CNTs compositions of 0.0CNTs-100Cu, 0.2CNTs-99.8Cu, 0.3CNTs-99.7Cu, and 0.5CNTs-99.5Cu in wt.%. We first analyzed the surface morphologies, that is, the average pore size, porosity, and pore density, to characterize each tested sample. Pool boiling experiments were later conducted under atmospheric pressure using water to obtain the pool boiling curves and bubble dynamics for different sintering temperatures and CNTs composition. Based on the experimental analysis, nucleate boiling heat transfer enhancement was interpreted in relation to the sintering temperature with surface morphologies and CNTs composition in relation to improved pore density. Compared to the bare copper surface, the achieved maximum enhancement for boiling heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux were 3.86 and 1.49, respectively, when a 0.5CNTs-Cu-coated surface sintered at 800 °C was applied.
