ABSTRACT In the subject with panhypopituitarism, doses of cortisol, that are well within the range of the daily secretion rate, caused significant catabolism of body protein. This effect could not be explained by the decreased rate of degradation of cortisol attributable to hypothyroidism. Low doses of triiodothyronine likewise resulted in nitrogen loss. The associated loss of cations suggested that the excess nitrogen came from body protein and was not a result of the release of protein-rich myxoedema fluid. It is suggested that the subject's initial thyroid and adrenal status should be considered when assessing the metabolic alterations produced by a number of hormones.
