Dear Readers, It is now five years already since the first discussions about starting a new bio-oriented section in Advanced Engineering Materials took shape. It became more and more evident - from conference visits, browsing the existing literature, talking to various scientists as well as from the submissions to Advanced Engineering Materials - that interdisciplinary research combining materials and life science would be one of the major topics for the coming years. It was a lucky serendipity that around the same time the DGM founded a new Working Group on Biomaterials, established by Prof. Klaus Jandt. And, just as a further proof of the importance of this booming area, this new Working Group was one of the most successful new starts the DGM has seen for a while. Then, during 2007, there were a couple of meetings with Prof. Jandt, and we both became delighted about the idea to get the Advanced Biomaterials section started in AEM, rather sooner than later. And from the first issue, published in mid 2008, onwards, we were more than happy that we started this endeavor. The number of submissions grew steadily, Prof. Jandt as the section editor sometimes became overwhelmed with requests for Special Issue projects, and the section became larger and larger. All these signs of success finally made it clear to me and my colleagues at Wiley-VCH, that we cannot confine Advanced Biomaterials in AEM forever, we must look for the next step in its growth process. At the same time, in other journals of Wiley's “family” of Advanced journals (Adv. Materials, Adv. Functional Materials, Small) the amount of bio-related papers grew rapidly, too. Thus, the requirement for a new product on its own was not just to be a viable solution for the fast growing Advanced Biomaterials, but also to become the new home for manuscripts combining materials science with medical, biological and biotechnological aspects. Such a new journal would then certainly become much bigger, in number of submissions, workload, issues and pages, than Advanced Biomaterials has been so far. Design Synthesis Biomaterials Devices for medical applications Physical, chemical, and biological properties Clinical and biotechnological applications From 2012 onwards this new journal will be available on its own – free for every interested reader for an initial period of two years. Linked to this, Advanced Biomaterials will see its last appearance in spring 2012, and the submission page for Advanced Biomaterials will close in October 2011, all authors are then linked to the submission page for Advanced Healthcare Materials at http://www.manuscriptxpress.com/osm/jsp/osm.jsp I cannot finish this Editorial without stating once more how thankful I am to Klaus Jandt acting as Editor-in-Chief for this section since the start of Advanced Biomaterials. Without his efforts, this section would not have been this successful, and the development path we are now about to enter would not have been possible. I am glad that he will stay involved in the development of both, Advanced Healthcare and Advanced Engineering Materials, as an important member of the Advisory Boards of both journals and, I am honored to say so, as a unique colleague and a true friend.
