Estimating AGN Black Hole Masses via Continuum Reverberation Mapping in the Era of LSST

Spectroscopic reverberation mapping (RM) is a direct approach widely used to determine the mass of black holes (BHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, it is very time consuming and difficult to apply to a large AGN sample. The empirical relation between the broad-line region size and luminosity (Hβ R BLR–L) provides a practical alternative yet is subject to large scatter and systematic bias. Based on the relation between the continuum emitting region size and luminosity (R CER–L) reported by Netzer (2022), we present a new BH mass estimator via continuum RM (CRM) by comparing R CER and R BLR, assuming that the continuum lags are dominated by the diffuse continuum emission. Using a sample of 21 AGNs, we find a tight R BLR–R CER relation (scatter∼0.28 dex) and that R BLR is larger than R CER at 5100 Å by an average factor of 8.1. This tight relation enables the BH mass estimation based on the CRM combined with the velocity information. Applying the relation to rest objects in our CRM sample, we demonstrate that the predicted R BLR,CRM follows the existing Hβ R BLR–L relation well and the estimated CRM BH masses are consistent with the RM/single-epoch BH masses using Hβ. This method will provide significant applications for BH mass estimation thanks to the short continuum lags and the easily accessible high-cadence, large-area photometric data, especially in the era of Legacy Survey of Space and Time.

Supermassive Black Hole Winds in X-rays: SUBWAYS

We present a new X-ray spectroscopic study of 22 luminous (2 × 1045≲Lbol/erg s−1≲ 2 × 1046) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at intermediate redshifts (0.1 ≲ z ≲ 0.4), as part of the SUpermassive Black hole Winds in the x-rAYS (SUBWAYS) sample, mostly composed of quasars and type 1 AGNs. Here, 17 targets were observed withXMM-Newtonin 2019–2020, and the remaining 5 are from previous observations. The aim of this large campaign (1.45 Ms duration) is to characterise the various manifestations of winds in the X-rays driven from supermassive black holes in AGNs. In this paper we focus on the search for and characterisation of ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), which are typically detected through blueshifted absorption troughs in the Fe K band (E > 7 keV). By following Monte Carlo procedures, we confirm the detection of absorption lines corresponding to highly ionised iron (e.g. Fe XXVHαand Fe XXVILyα) in 7 out of 22 sources at the ≳95% confidence level (for each individual line). The global combined probability of such absorption features in the sample is > 99.9%. The SUBWAYS campaign, based onXMM-Newton, extends to higher luminosities and redshifts than previous local studies on Seyferts. We find a UFO detection fraction of ∼30% of the total sample, which is in agreement with previous findings. This work independently provides further support for the existence of highly ionised matter propagating at mildly relativistic speeds (≳0.1c) in a considerable fraction of AGNs over a broad range of luminosities, which is believed to play a key role in the self-regulated AGN feeding-feedback cycle, as also supported by hydrodynamical multi-phase simulations.

AGN accretion and black hole growth across compact and extended galaxy evolution phases

ABSTRACT The extent of black hole growth during different galaxy evolution phases and the connection between galaxy compactness and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity remain poorly understood. We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the CANDELS fields to identify star-forming and quiescent galaxies at z = 0.5–3 in both compact and extended phases and use Chandra X-ray imaging to measure the distribution of AGN accretion rates and track black hole growth within these galaxies. We show that accounting for the impact of AGN light changes ∼20 per cent of the X-ray sources from compact to extended galaxy classifications. We find that ∼10–25 per cent of compact star-forming galaxies host an AGN, a mild enhancement (by a factor ∼2) compared to extended star-forming galaxies or compact quiescent galaxies of equivalent stellar mass and redshift. However, AGNs are not ubiquitous in compact star-forming galaxies and this is not the evolutionary phase, given its relatively short time-scale, where the bulk of black hole mass growth takes place. Conversely, we measure the highest AGN fractions (∼10–30 per cent) within the relatively rare population of extended quiescent galaxies. For massive galaxies that quench at early cosmic epochs, substantial black hole growth in this extended phase is crucial to produce the elevated black hole mass-to-galaxy stellar mass scaling relation observed for quiescent galaxies at z ∼ 0. We also show that AGN fraction increases with compactness in star-forming galaxies and decreases in quiescent galaxies within both the compact and extended subpopulations, demonstrating that AGN activity depends closely on the structural properties of galaxies.

Gravitomagnetic Interaction of a Kerr Black Hole with a Magnetic Field as the Source of the Jetted GeV Radiation of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract We show that the gravitomagnetic interaction of a Kerr black hole (BH) with a surrounding magnetic field induces an electric field that accelerates charged particles to ultra-relativistic energies in the vicinity of the BH. Along the BH rotation axis, these electrons/protons can reach energies of even thousands of petaelectronvolts, so stellar-mass BHs in long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and supermassive BHs in active galactic nuclei can contribute to the ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays thorough this mechanism. At off-axis latitudes, the particles accelerate to energies of hundreds of gigaelectronvolts and emit synchrotron radiation at gigaelectronvolt energies. This process occurs within 60° around the BH rotation axis, and due to the equatorial symmetry, it forms a double-cone emission. We outline the theoretical framework describing these acceleration and radiation processes, how they extract the rotational energy of the Kerr BH and the consequences for the astrophysics of GRBs.

Constraints on Cosmic Ray Acceleration Capabilities of Black Holes in X-ray Binaries and Active Galactic Nuclei

Rotating black holes (BHs) are likely the largest energy reservoirs in the Universe as predicted by BH thermodynamics, while cosmic rays (CRs) are the most energetic among particles detected on Earth. Magnetic fields surrounding BHs combined with strong gravity effects, thanks to the spacetime symmetries, turn the BHs into powerful accelerators of charged particles. At the same time, in the age of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger astronomy, BHs and their environments have not yet been probed with CR messengers, despite being observed across most of the electromagnetic spectrum, and neutrino and gravitational waves. In this paper, we probe the acceleration capabilities of BHs in 8 galactic X-ray binaries and 25 local active galactic nuclei (AGNs) within 100 Mpc, based on the ultra-efficient regime of the magnetic Penrose process of a BH energy extraction combined with observational data. We find that the maximum energy of the galactic BHs can reach only up to the knee of the CR spectrum, including supermassive BH Sgr A* at the Galactic Center. On the other hand, for supermassive BHs in AGNs, we find that the mean energy of primary CRs is of the order of 1019 eV. It is therefore likely that local supermassive BHs give sufficient contribution to the ankle—a sharp change in the slope of the cosmic ray spectrum around 1018.6 eV energy. We also discuss the energy losses of primary CRs close to the acceleration zones. In the galactic BH cases, it is likely dominated by synchrotron radiation losses.

Galaxy Mergers up to z < 2.5. II. AGN Incidence in Merging Galaxies at Separations of 3–15 kpc

Abstract We present a study of the incidence of active galactic nucleus (AGN) in a sample of major merging systems at 0.3 < z < 2.5. Galaxies in this merger sample have projected separations between 3 and 15 kpc and are selected from the CANDELS/3D-Hubble Space Telescope catalogs using a peak-finding algorithm. AGNs in mergers and non-mergers are identified on the basis of their X-ray emission, optical lines, mid-infrared colors, and radio emission. Among galaxies with adequate measurements to find potential AGNs, we find a similar fraction of AGNs in mergers (16.4 %) compared to the fraction found in non-merging galaxies (15.4% ± 0.6%). In mergers, this fraction is obtained by assuming that, in unresolved observations, only one of the merging galaxies is the AGN source (16 merging systems have at least one AGN galaxy). The similarity between the fractions is possibly due to the higher availability of cold gas at high redshifts, where the excess of nuclear activity as a result of merging is less important than at lower redshifts. Star-forming galaxies have a higher incidence of AGNs than quiescent galaxies. In particular, starbursts in mergers are the most common sites of AGN activity, since they present higher AGN fractions and black hole accretion rates. We find no clear correlation between the black hole accretion rate and the galaxy properties (i.e., star formation rate, stellar mass) in mergers and non-mergers. However, mergers seem to have a higher correlation with star formation than non-mergers, which possibly indicates that the merging process is starting to influence the star formation and AGN activity even at this pre-coalescence stage.

A Shining Death of Unequal Supermassive Black Hole Binaries

Abstract In the ΛCDM scenario, small galaxies merge to produce larger entities. Since supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are found in galaxies of all sizes, SMBH binaries (SMBHBs) are generally expected to form during the amalgamation of galaxies. It is unclear what fraction of these binaries could eventually merge, but a general consensus is that initially the orbital decay is mediated by the surrounding gas and stars. In this Letter, we show that in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) the radiation field also causes the orbits of the accreting SMBHs to shrink. The corresponding mechanism, known as the “Poynting–Robertson drag” (PR drag), takes effect on a well-defined timescale CT Sal, where T Sal is the Salpeter timescale of the AGN, presumably coinciding with the primary SMBH, and is a constant determined by the radiative efficiency ϵ, the mass ratio q of the two black holes, and a parameter ξ characterizing the size of the circumsecondary accretion disk. We find that when q ≲ a few × 10−5, the PR drag is more efficient in shrinking the binary than many other mechanisms, such as dynamical friction and type-I migration. Our finding points to a possible new channel for the coalescence of unequal SMBHBs and the clearing of intermediate-massive black holes in AGNs.

The Intrinsic Scatter of the Broad Lines–Narrow Line Correlation in Type I AGN

Abstract A correlation between the FWHM of the broad Balmer lines and the narrow [O iii]/H β line ratio was recently applied to the black hole (BH) mass estimation in type II active galactic nuclei (AGN), where only the narrow lines are visible to the observer. The correlation was initially quantified with type I AGN using stacked spectra, in groups automatically created using a machine-learning algorithm. Such an analysis does not provide information about the intrinsic scatter of the correlation. In addition, it does not necessarily reproduce the true underlying correlation, for example, due to the stacking of spectra with different properties. Testing these two issues requires measurements of individual objects. In this work, we perform such a test by fitting the broad and narrow lines for 8302 type I AGN from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Due to the difficulty in reliably measuring the narrow Balmer lines in such objects, which are, in many cases, a small contribution on top of the broad lines, we visually inspect all of the fits and identify 1561 objects with robust measurements. Using these measurements, we find that while a correlation does exist, it shows a large scatter and is not well described by a linear relation. This should be taken into account when using the broad H β FWHM versus narrow [O iii]/H β correlation for type II AGN BH mass estimation.

Exploring the X-ray universe via timing: mass of the active galactic nucleus black hole XMMUJ134736.6+173403

AbstractA strong quasi-periodic modulation has recently been revealed in the X-ray flux of the X-ray source XMMUJ134736.6+173403. The two observed twin-peak quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) exhibit a 3:1 frequency ratio and strongly support the evidence for the presence of an active galactic nucleus black hole (AGN BH). It has been suggested that detections of twin-peak QPOs with commensurable frequency ratios and scaling of their periods with BH mass could provide the basis for a method intended to determine the mass of BH sources, such as AGNs. Assuming the orbital origin of QPOs, we calculate the upper and lower limit on the AGN BH mass M, reaching M ≍ 107–109M⊙. Compared to mass estimates of other sources, XMMUJ134736.6+173403 appears to be the most massive source with commensurable QPO frequencies, and its mass represents the current observational upper limit on the AGN BH mass obtained from the QPO observations.

Ten years of AGILE: the mission and scientific highlights

We review the main features and scientific results obtained during the first 10 years of the AGILE space Mission, a scientific program of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) focused on high-energy astrophysics. The Mission was proposed in 1997 for the ASI “Small Mission” Program and the instrument has been developed with the programmatic and technical support of INAF and INFN. The AGILE satellite was launched on April 23, 2007, from the Indian base in Sriharikota. We describe first the characteristics of the instrument and of the satellite. AGILE is a very innovative space Mission for its class, and is capable of reaching an optimal scientific performance for the study of astrophysical sources with detectors operating in the energy ranges 20–60 keV, 400 keV–100 MeV, 50 MeV–30 GeV. We review the main scientific achievements of the Mission with contributions to the study of the most energetic Galactic and extragalactic sources including accreting compact objects (neutron stars and black holes), pulsars, Supernova Remnants, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). AGILE made several important discoveries: a novel mechanism of particle acceleration operating in the Crab Nebula, the emission of transient gamma rays at the moment of launching of relativistic jets from Galactic compact sources, the first evidence of hadronic cosmic ray production from Galactic sources, the emission of very powerful gamma-ray flares from accreting super-massive black holes in AGN, sudden spectral transitions in gamma-ray bursts. Furthermore, AGILE is now providing unique contributions for the study of gravitational wave source counterparts and cosmic neutrino emitters. Also terrestrial applications are relevant for the science program: AGILE discovered gamma-ray emission above 20 MeV from Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes produced by powerful lighting and thunderstorms. This discovery has an important impact for environmental and atmospheric studies. In addition, particle resonance effects and time-dependent precipitations in the lower Earth magnetosphere can by addressed by AGILE studying the charged particles detected by the instrument. The AGILE satellite is operating nominally, and continues to observe the sky searching for the most energetic phenomena of our Universe.

Mass of the active galactic nucleus black hole XMMUJ134736.6+173403

A recent study of the X-ray source XMMUJ134736.6+173403 has revealed a strong quasi-periodic modulation in the X-ray flux. The observation of two quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) that occur on a daily timescale and exhibit a 3:1 frequency ratio strongly supports the evidence for the presence of an active galactic nucleus black hole (AGN BH). Assuming an orbital origin of QPOs, we calculated the upper and lower limit on AGN BH mass M and found M ≈ 107 − 109 M⊙. When we compare this to mass estimates of other sources, XMMUJ134736.6+173403 appears to be the most massive source with commensurable QPO frequencies, and its mass represents the current observational upper limit on AGN BH mass based on QPO observations. We note that it will be crucial for the falsification of particular resonance models of QPOs whether only a single QPO with a frequency that completes the harmonic sequence 3 : 2 : 1 is found in this source, or if a new different pair of QPOs with frequencies in the 3 : 2 ratio is found. The former case would agree with the prediction of the 3 : 2 epicyclic resonance model and BH mass M ≈ (5a2 + 8a + 8)×107 M⊙, where a is a dimensionless BH spin.

The shape of Fe Kα line emitted from relativistic accretion disc around AGN black holes

The relativistically broadened Fe K[Formula: see text] line, originating from the accretion disc in a vicinity of a super massive black hole, is observed in only less than 50% of type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In this study, we investigate could this lack of detections be explained by the effects of certain parameters of the accretion disc and black hole, such as the inclination, the inner and outer radius of disc and emissivity index. In order to determine how these parameters affect the Fe K[Formula: see text] line shape, we simulated about 60,000 Fe K[Formula: see text] line profiles emitted from the relativistic disc. Based on simulated line profiles, we conclude that the lack of the Fe K[Formula: see text] line detection in type 1 AGN could be caused by the specific emitting disc parameters, but also by the limits in the spectral resolution and sensitivity of the X-ray detectors.

The QUEST–La Silla AGN Variability Survey: Connection between AGN Variability and Black Hole Physical Properties

Abstract We present our statistical analysis of the connection between active galactic nucleus (AGN) variability and physical properties of the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). We constructed optical light curves using data from the QUEST–La Silla AGN variability survey. To model the variability, we used the structure function, among the excess variance and the amplitude from Damp Random Walk (DRW) modeling. For the measurement of SMBH physical properties, we used public spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our analysis is based on an original sample of 2345 sources detected in both SDSS and QUEST–La Silla. For 1473 of these sources we could perform a proper measurement of the spectral and variability properties, and 1348 of these sources were classified as variable (91.5%). We found that the amplitude of the variability (A) depends solely on the rest-frame emission wavelength and the Eddington ratio, where A anticorrelates with both λ rest and L/L Edd. This suggests that AGN variability does not evolve over cosmic time, and its amplitude is inversely related to the accretion rate. We found that the logarithmic gradient of the variability (γ) does not correlate significantly with any SMBH physical parameter, since there is no statistically significant linear regression model with an absolute value of the slope higher than 0.1. Finally, we found that the general distribution of γ measured for our sample differs from the distribution of γ obtained for light curves simulated from a DRW process. For 20.6% of the variable sources in our sample, a DRW model is not appropriate to describe the variability, since γ differs considerably from the expected value of 0.5.

Nonradial and nonpolytropic astrophysical outflows

Context. High-resolution radio imaging of active galactic nuclei (AGN) has revealed that the jets of some sources present superluminal knots and transverse stratification. Recent observational projects, such as ALMA and γ-ray telescopes, such as HESS and HESS2 have provided new observational constraints on the central regions of rotating black holes in AGN, suggesting that there is an inner- or spine-jet surrounded by a disk wind. This relativistic spine-jet is likely to be composed of electron-positron pairs extracting energy from the black hole and will be explored by the future γ-ray telescope CTA. Aims. In this article we present an extension to and generalization of relativistic jets in Kerr metric of the Newtonian meridional self-similar mechanism. We aim at modeling the inner spine-jet of AGN as a relativistic light outflow emerging from a spherical corona surrounding a Kerr black hole and its inner accretion disk. Methods. The model is built by expanding the metric and the forces with colatitude to first order in the magnetic flux function. As a result of the expansion, all colatitudinal variations of the physical quantities are quantified by a unique parameter. Unlike previous models, effects of the light cylinder are not neglected. Results. Solutions with high Lorentz factors are obtained and provide spine-jet models up to the polar axis. As in previous publications, we calculate the magnetic collimation efficiency parameter, which measures the variation of the available energy across the field lines. This collimation efficiency is an integral part of the model, generalizing the classical magnetic rotator efficiency criterion to Kerr metric. We study the variation of the magnetic efficiency and acceleration with the spin of the black hole and show their high sensitivity to this integral. Conclusions. These new solutions model collimated or radial, relativistic or ultra-relativistic outflows in AGN or γ-ray bursts. In particular, we discuss the relevance of our solutions to modeling the M 87 spine-jet. We study the efficiency of the central black hole spin to collimate a spine-jet and show that the jet power is of the same order as that determined by numerical simulations.

A model for AGN variability on multiple time-scales

Abstract We present a framework to link and describe active galactic nuclei (AGN) variability on a wide range of time-scales, from days to billions of years. In particular, we concentrate on the AGN variability features related to changes in black hole fuelling and accretion rate. In our framework, the variability features observed in different AGN at different time-scales may be explained as realisations of the same underlying statistical properties. In this context, we propose a model to simulate the evolution of AGN light curves with time based on the probability density function (PDF) and power spectral density (PSD) of the Eddington ratio (L/LEdd) distribution. Motivated by general galaxy population properties, we propose that the PDF may be inspired by the L/LEdd distribution function (ERDF), and that a single (or limited number of) ERDF+PSD set may explain all observed variability features. After outlining the framework and the model, we compile a set of variability measurements in terms of structure function (SF) and magnitude difference. We then combine the variability measurements on a SF plot ranging from days to Gyr. The proposed framework enables constraints on the underlying PSD and the ability to link AGN variability on different time-scales, therefore providing new insights into AGN variability and black hole growth phenomena.

The X-Ray Polarization of the Accretion Disk Coronae of Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract Hard X-rays observed in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are thought to originate from the Comptonization of the optical/UV accretion disk photons in a hot corona. Polarization studies of these photons can help to constrain the corona geometry and the plasma properties. We have developed a ray-tracing code that simulates the Comptonization of accretion disk photons in coronae of arbitrary shapes, and use it here to study the polarization of the X-ray emission from wedge and spherical coronae. We study the predicted polarization signatures for the fully relativistic and various approximate treatments of the elemental Compton scattering processes. We furthermore use the code to evaluate the impact of nonthermal electrons and cyclo-synchrotron photons on the polarization properties. Finally, we model the NuSTAR observations of the Seyfert I galaxy Mrk 335 and predict the associated polarization signal. Our studies show that X-ray polarimetry missions such as NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and the X-ray Imaging Polarimetry Explorer proposed to ESA will provide valuable new information about the physical properties of the plasma close to the event horizon of AGN black holes.

A universal scaling law of black hole activity including gamma-ray bursts

Previous works show that a correlation among radio luminosity, X-ray luminosity, and black hole (BH) mass from stellar-mass BHs in X-ray binaries to supermassive BHs in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), which leads to the so-called fundamental plane of BH activity. However, there are two competing explanations for this fundamental plane, including the jet-dominated model and the disk-jet model. Thus, the physical origin of this fundamental plane remains unknown. In this paper, we show that the X-ray luminosities, radio luminosities and BH masses of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and M82 X-1 also show a similar distribution. The universal scaling law among stellar-mass, intermediate and supermassive BH systems, together with the fact that radio and X-ray emission of GRBs originates from relativistic jets, reveals that the fundamental plane of BH activity is controlled by a jet, i.e., the radio and X-ray emission is mainly from the jet. Our work also suggests that the jets are scale-invariant with respect to the BH mass.

Central Engine and Host Galaxy of RXJ 1301.9+2747: A Multiwavelength View of a Low-mass Black Hole Active Galactic Nuclei with Ultra-soft X-Ray Emission

Abstract RXJ 1301.9+2747 is an optically identified very-low-mass AGN candidate with , which shows extremely soft X-ray emission and unusual X-ray variability in the form of short-lived flares. We present an analysis of multiwavelength observations of RXJ 1301.9+2747 in order to study the properties of the active nucleus and its host galaxy. The UV-to-X-ray spectrum in the quiescent state can be well and self-consistently described by a thermal and a Comptonized emission from the accretion disk, with the black body dominating ∼70% of the X-rays in the 0.2–2 keV. The same model can describe the X-ray spectrum in the flare state, but the Comptonized component becomes dominant (∼80%). The best fit implies an Eddington ratio of ∼0.14 and a black-hole mass of M ⊙, in agreement with the estimation from the optical data within errors. However, the best-fitting model under predicts the optical flux for the HST point source by a factor of ∼2. The excess of nuclear optical emission could be attributed to a nuclear stellar cluster, which is frequently seen in low-mass AGNs. The X-ray to optical spectral slope ( ) is lower than in most other active galaxies, which may be attributed to intrinsically X-ray weakness due to very little hot and optically thin coronal emission. We performed a pilot search for weak or hidden broad emission lines using optical spectropolarimetry observations, but no polarized broad lines are detected. The host galaxy appears to be a disk galaxy with a boxy pseudobulge or nuclear bar accounting for ∼15% of the total starlight, which is consistent with the general characteristics of the host of low-mass AGNs.

Detection of faint broad emission lines in type 2 AGN – II. On the measurement of the black hole mass of type 2 AGN and the unified model

Abstract We report the virial measurements of the black hole (BH) mass of a sample of 17 type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN), drawn from the Swift/BAT 70-month 14–195 keV hard X-ray catalogue, where a faint BLR component has been measured via deep NIR (0.8–2.5 μm) spectroscopy. We compared the type 2 AGN with a control sample of 33 type 1 AGN. We find that the type 2 AGN BH masses span the 5 < log(MBH/M⊙) < 7.5 range, with an average log(MBH/M⊙) = 6.7, which is ∼0.8 dex smaller than found for type 1 AGN. If type 1 and type 2 AGN of the same X-ray luminosity log($L_{\rm 14{\rm -}195}$/erg s−1) ∼ 43.5 are compared, type 2 AGN have 0.5 dex smaller BH masses than type 1 AGN. Although based on few tens of objects, this result disagrees with the standard AGN unification scenarios in which type 1 and type 2 AGN are the same objects observed along different viewing angles with respect to a toroidal absorbing material.

VIRIAL BLACK HOLE MASS ESTIMATES FOR 280,000 AGNs FROM THE SDSS BROADBAND PHOTOMETRY AND SINGLE-EPOCH SPECTRA

Abstract We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar Data Release 12 (DR12Q), containing nearly 300,000 active galactic nuclei (AGNs), to calculate the monochromatic luminosities at 5100, 3000, and 1350 Å, derived from the broadband extinction-corrected SDSS magnitudes. After matching these sources to their counterparts from the SDSS Quasar Data Release 7 (DR7Q), we find very high correlations between our luminosities and DR7Q spectra-based luminosities with minute mean offsets (∼0.01 dex) and dispersions of differences of 0.11, 0.10, and 0.12 dex, respectively, across a luminosity range of 2.5 dex. We then estimate the black hole (BH) masses of the AGNs using the broad line region radius–disk luminosity relations and the FWHM of the Mg ii and C iv emission lines, to provide a catalog of 283,033 virial BH mass estimates (132,451 for Mg ii, 213,071 for C iv, and 62,489 for both) along with the estimates of the bolometric luminosity and Eddington ratio for 0.1 < z < 5.5 and for roughly a quarter of the sky covered by SDSS. The BH mass estimates from Mg ii turned out to be closely matched to the ones from DR7Q with a dispersion of differences of 0.34 dex across a BH mass range of ∼2 dex. We uncovered a bias in the derived C iv FWHMs from DR12Q as compared to DR7Q, which we correct empirically. The C iv BH mass estimates should be used with caution because the C iv line is known to cause problems in the estimation of BH mass from single-epoch spectra. Finally, after the FWHM correction, the AGN BH mass estimates from C iv closely match the DR7Q ones (with a dispersion of 0.28 dex), and more importantly the Mg ii and C iv BH masses agree internally with a mean offset of 0.07 dex and a dispersion of 0.39 dex.
