Synthesis and physico-chemical properties of the bis(2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis-(octhylthio)-5,10,15,20-tetraazaporphyrinato)lutetium(III) complex

The synthesis and the physico-chemical properties of the bis(2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis-(octhylthio)-5,10,15,20-tetraazaporphyrinato)lutetium(III) double-decker complex, Lu(OOTTAP)2, are described, ESR, 1H and 13C NMR, UV-visible and NIR studies show that radical nature of this compound and suggest that the unpaired electron cannot be assigned to a specific tetra-azaporphyrinic ring on the time scales available. Some relevant UV-visible spectroscopic and redox features of Lu(OOTTAP)2 resemble closely those of diphthalocyanine complexes, while the intensity and vibrational structure of the NIR spectra are rather reminiscent of those of bis-porphyrin systems.

Synthesis of totally rigid covalently linked bis-porphyrin systems for studying long-range electron transfer and energy transfer processes

The synthesis of novel rigid covalently linked bis-porphyrin systems, 3 – 5, and the monoporphyrin model, 6, is described. The synthetic strategy entails formation of o-phenylenediamine units, 11, and their reaction with the dioxotetraphenylchlorin, 12.

Intermolecular complexes of singly linked bisporphyrins with trinitrobenzene

Abstract Several covalently linked bisporphyrin systems, free-base (H 2 P---H 2 P), hybrid bisporphyrins (Zn---H 2 P) and Zn(II) dimers (ZnP---ZnP) and their 1:1 molecular complexes with sym 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene have been investigated by optical absorption and emission, and magnetic resonance spectroscopic methods. In these systems, two porphyrin units are linked singly through one of the meso aryl groups via ether linkages of variable length. The bisporphyrins cooperatively bind a molecule of a π-acceptor; 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB). The binding constant values vary with interchromophore separation. Maximum binding is observed in the bisporphyrin bearing a two-ether covalent linkage. It is found that TNB quenches the fluorescence of the two porphyrine units in a selective manner. It is suggested that a critical distance between the two porphyrin units is necessary for the observance of maximum cooperative intermolecular binding with an acceptor.

Coordination behaviour of metalloporphyrins with intramolecularly linked thiolate ligand

meso-Tetraphenylporphyrin was derivatized at different positions of one of the meso aryl groups to obtain interesting bisporphyrin systems bearing a disulfide group. Various metal (VO(IV), Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Ag(II)) derivatives of these porphyrins have been prepared. In situ reduction of these derivatives results in well-defined five coordinate complexes with thiolate as the axial ligand exhibiting hyperporphyrin spectra. The relative extent of thiolate coordination to the metal ion depends on the nature of the substitution as o > m > p. The electrochemical redox behaviour of these systems reveals the existence of the disulfide group and spectroelectrochemical studies unambiguously show the formation of negatively charged pentacoordinate porphyrin complexes. Possible structures have been proposed for the o, m and p substituted porphyrin derivatives based on the 1H NMR data.

The synthesis of novel bis-porphyrin systems in which the porphyrins are rigidly constrained in a coplanar arrangement is reported.
