Psychometric Properties of the Spanish Version of the Cognitive Problems and Strategies Assessment in Patients with Bipolar Disorder.

Cognitive deficits play an important role in Bipolar Disorder (BPD). The Cognitive Problems and Strategies Assessment (CPSA) is a measure that evaluates the patient's perception of cognitive difficulties, and the spontaneous use of compensatory strategies and could thus have potential utility for clinical practice in patients with BPD. Our aim was to determine the validity and reliability of the Cognitive Problems and Strategies Assessment (CPSA) in Bipolar Disorder (BPD). Ninety-three BPD outpatients and 90 controls completed the Assessment of Problems with Thinking and Memory (APTM) questionnaire and the Assessment of Memory and Thinking Strategies (AMTS) questionnaire which constitute the CPSA, the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA), as a measure of convergent validity, and general sociodemographic data. Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Spearman's correlation coefficient and independent sample t tests were used for Internal consistency, Convergent validity and Discriminant validity. The APTM had a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.93 and the AMTS 0.90. The COBRA score and the APTM were significantly correlated. BPD patients exhibited higher scores on the APTM and lower scores on the AMTS than controls. The present instrument enriches the clinician's repertoire for rapid and inexpensive cognitive evaluation in BPD.

Sleep and cognition in Bipolar Disorder in full or partial remission

IntroductionCognitive impairment in Bipolar Disorder (BD) is frequent and is associated with reduced function in several areas. Close to half of the patients with BD have persistent cognitive dysfunction. The causes of cognitive impairments and factors associated with normal cognitive function are not clearly described.Some preliminary evidence links sleep disturbances and cognition impairment in BD. A limited number of studies have investigated the link between sleep and cognitive function in BD using objective measures.ObjectivesWe aim to investigate associations between sleep and objective and subjective cognitive function in patients with BD in full or partial remission.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study. The participants will be 90 adults meeting criteria for DSM 5 BD type 1 or type 2 in full or partial remission. Participants are recruited from psychoeducational groups for BD and from a specialist outpatient clinic.Diagnoses are set with SCID-5 and are confirmed in a consensus meeting with at least two psychiatrists and/or specialists in psychology. Symptoms of depression and mania are measured with Montgomery Asberg depression rating scale (MADRS) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). Sleep is measured subjectively with Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and objectively with actigraphs which participants wear on their non-dominant hand for ten days. Subjective cognition is measured with Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA). Participants undergo neurocognitive testing with a self-administered validated web-based neuropsychological test platform. The testing is carried out in the participant’s home on their smart phones. The tests include measures of learning, storing, recalling, and recognizing visual and verbal information, working memory and reaction time. Normal cognitive function is defined as scores within or above mean on all cognitive subtests. The test-platform has been validated.We will use descriptive statistics to examine distribution of demographic characteristics. We will test for correlations between sleep factors and subjective and objective measures of cognitive function.EthicsThe Regional Committees for Medical and Health research ethics approved the study.ResultsResults will be presented at the conference. So far, 74 out of 90 participants have been included.ConclusionsWe anticipate that normal sleep may be associated with good cognitive functioning. Cognitive reserve moderates the relationship between childhood maltreatment, objective and subjective cognition, and psychosocial functioning in individuals with first-episode psychosis.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between childhood maltreatment (CM), objective and subjective cognition, and psychosocial functioning in adults with first-episode psychosis (FEP) by examining the moderating role of cognitive reserve (CR). A secondary objective was to explore whether unique CM subtypes (physical and/or emotional abuse, sexual abuse, physical and/or emotional neglect) were driving this relationship. Sixty-six individuals with FEP (Mage = 27.3, SD = 7.2 years, 47% male) completed a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery, the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA), the Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and the Cognitive Reserve Assessment Scale in Health (CRASH). Linear regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the interaction effect of CR between CM and cognitive and psychosocial variables, controlling for age, sex, and social desirability (CTQ-denial-minimization). In adults with FEP overall CM interacted with CR to predict COBRA-subjective cognitive complaints, but not neurocognitive or psychosocial functioning. Sexual abuse and physical neglect interacted with CR to predict verbal memory. Most of the CM subtypes interacted with CR to predict FAST-leisure time, whereas only emotional neglect interacted with CR to predict FAST-interpersonal relationships. Overall, greater CR was related to better functioning. The current results indicate that associations between specific CM subtypes, subjective and objective cognition, and psychosocial domains are moderated through CR with greater functioning. Early interventions focused on CR seeking to improve cognitive and psychosocial outcomes, with emphasis on improving subjective cognitive functions would be beneficial for individuals with FEP and CM. Differences in clinical presentation between newly diagnosed bipolar I and II disorders: A naturalistic study

AimThis naturalistic clinical study aims to investigate differences between newly diagnosed patients with bipolar type I (BDI) and bipolar type II (BDII) disorders in socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, affective symptoms, cognition, functioning and comorbidity with personality disorders. MethodsThe BD diagnosis and type were confirmed using the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry. Affective symptoms were assessed with the Young Mania Rating Scale, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, the Major Depressive Index, and the Altman Self-Rating Mania Scale. Functional impairment was assessed with the Functional Assessment Short Test. Cognitive impairment was evaluated by the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry and the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment. Finally, comorbid personality disorders were assessed with the Standardized Assessment of Personality-Abbreviated Scale and structured interview Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-disorders. Results383 newly diagnosed patients were included (BDI: n = 125; BDII: n = 258). Against expectations, we found no more depressive symptoms in BDII compared with BDI nor any differences in cognitive, childhood trauma or overall functional impairment. The only difference was lower occupational impairment in the BDII group. LimitationsThe self-reported measures of cognitive difficulties and childhood trauma involved potential bias (recall or other). Despite BD being newly diagnosed a diagnostic delay was observed. ConclusionPatients newly diagnosed with BDII and BDI had similar burdens of depressive symptoms and cognitive and overall functional impairment, however patients with BDI had lower occupational functioning. No statistically significant difference was found in prevalence of comorbid personality disorders between patients with BDI and BDII.

Psychometric Properties of Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment in Iranian Bipolar Patients

Background: Cognitive impairments are common in bipolar disorder, which can negatively impact patients' psychological and psychosocial functioning, but there are no tools for assessing cognitive deficits, especially in patients with bipolar disorder in Iran. Objectives: This study assessed the psychometric properties of the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA) scale in Iranian patients with bipolar disorder (BD). Methods: Eighty patients diagnosed with bipolar spectrum disorder were selected from Tehran's major psychiatric facilities: Razi Psychiatric Hospital and Taleghani Hospital. A purposive sampling method was followed to select 80 non-patient control individuals from the general population in Tehran. Participants were evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Bech-Rafaelsen Mania Rating Scale (BRMAS), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the COBRA. The data were analyzed using SPSS-24 to evaluate convergent and discriminant validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency. Results: The convergent validity was examined by calculating the correlation between the scores on the COBRA and those on the MMSE; the results were significant (r = - 0.63, P < 0.001). Discriminant validity was assessed by comparing the COBRA total scores between the patients with BD and the control group; the results indicated a significant difference between the two groups (t = 6.413, P = 0.001). The CFA and EFA showed that the one-factor structure of COBRA was the best model. The Cronbach's alpha of 0.72 indicated an internal consistency. A test-retest reliability estimate of 0.84 indicated the high reliability of the scale. The current investigation suggested a cutoff score of 28, with 0.72 sensitivity and 0.69 specificity. Conclusions: Our translated version of the COBRA in Persian in this study showed adequate psychometric properties. This test can be considered an applicable instrument in investigating cognitive complaints in patients with bipolar disorder in Iran.

Cognitive complaints mediate the relationship of affective temperaments with presenteeism in Japan

BACKGROUND: Presenteeism is a key issue to address in occupational mental health. A worker’s characteristics and cognitive function are important factors when considering interventions for presenteeism. However, the role of cognitive complaints (CCs) on the relationships of affective temperaments (ATs) with presenteeism remains unknown. Hence, this research aimed to assess this from the viewpoint of the mediator effect of CCs using path analysis.METHODS: Study participants (466) were assessed using the CCs in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, 39-item short version of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Auto-questionnaire version, and Work Limitations Questionnaire 8 to evaluate CCs, ATs, and presenteeism, respectively. Path analyses were conducted to measure the role of CCs as a mediator in the impact of ATs on presenteeism.RESULTS: The CCs partially mediated the influence of cyclothymic and depressive temperaments on presenteeism, and fully mediated the influence of irritable and anxious temperaments on presenteeism. However, CCs had no mediating effect on the relationship between hyperthymic temperament and presenteeism.CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested mediator roles for CCs in the relationships of ATs with presenteeism in Japan. To address presenteeism using individual interventions, evaluating the mediating effect of CCs varied by ATs may be useful in assessing Japanese occupational mental health.

Cognitive complaints mediate childhood parental bonding influence on presenteeism.

BackgroundChildhood parental bonding and cognitive complaints (CCs) affect a worker’s mental health (MH), and CCs affect presenteeism. However, the impact of childhood parental bonding on presenteeism and the mediating effect of CCs with respect to the association among childhood parental bonding and presenteeism remain poorly understood.AimWe aimed to investigate the mediating role of CCs on the relationship between childhood parental bonding and presenteeism to better understand the influence of childhood parental bonding on adulthood presenteeism.SettingA total of 440 Japanese adult workers recruited using convenience sampling were evaluated.MethodsThe Parental Bonding Instrument, Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment and Work Limitations Questionnaire 8 were used to assess childhood parental bonding, CCs, and presenteeism, respectively. We performed Spearman’s correlation analysis and path analysis to investigate the relationship among the variables.ResultsPath analysis revealed that childhood parental bonding and CCs significantly affected presenteeism. More specifically, CCs fully and partially mediated the effect of paternal and maternal care on presenteeism, respectively. Moreover, CCs partially mediated the effects of both paternal and maternal overprotection on presenteeism.ConclusionThe mediating role of CCs on the relationship between childhood parental bonding and presenteeism was shown in this study. In occupational MH, evaluating the mediating effect of CCs may be useful for addressing adulthood presenteeism associated with childhood parental bonding.

Cognitive complaints mediate the influence of sleep disturbance and state anxiety on subjective well-being and ill-being in adult community volunteers: a cross sectional study

BackgroundSleep disturbance, state anxiety, and cognitive complaints (CCs) have been recognized as important issues in public health. Although the mediating role of CCs has been proposed, their role in the relationships between sleep disturbance, state anxiety, and subjective well-being (SWB) and subjective ill-being (SIB) are not yet fully understood. This study used path analyses to investigate whether CCs mediate these relationships.MethodsThe study recruited 523 Japanese adult volunteers using convenience sampling. Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (Form Y), Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, and Subjective Well-Being Inventory to evaluate sleep disturbance, state anxiety, CCs, and SWB and SIB, respectively. Path analyses were conducted to assess the mediating effects of CCs.ResultsThe path analyses showed significant indirect associations of sleep disturbance and state anxiety with SWB (p = 0.024 and p = 0.012) and SIB (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001), respectively, mediated by CCs. Furthermore, there were significant indirect associations of sleep disturbance with CCs (p < 0.001), SWB (p < 0.001), and SIB (p < 0.001), via state anxiety, respectively.ConclusionsThis study suggests that CCs mediate the associations of sleep disturbance and state anxiety with SWB and SIB, respectively, in adult community volunteers. To address SWB and SIB associated with sleep disturbance and state anxiety, evaluating CCs may be useful in public mental health. Our findings will encourage health care workers to assess CCs more systematically. Future studies may need to target CCs to develop interventions for SWB and SIB.

Subjective cognitive impairment and presenteeism mediate the associations of rumination with subjective well-being and ill-being in Japanese adult workers from the community

BackgroundIn recent years, the roles of rumination, subjective cognitive impairment (SCI), and presenteeism have been emphasized in occupational mental health. However, associations between rumination, SCI, presenteeism, and psychological well-being are not fully understood. We hypothesized that SCI and presenteeism mediate the associations between rumination and subjective well-being (SWB) and subjective ill-being (SIB). Hence, we investigated the mediating roles of SCI and presenteeism in this study.MethodsA total of 458 adult workers (mean age, 40.8±11.9 years; 44.1% male), who were recruited in Tokyo using convenience sampling, were analyzed in this study. The Ruminative Responses Scale, Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, Work Limitations Questionnaire 8, and Subjective Well-being Inventory were used to evaluate rumination, SCI, presenteeism, and psychological well-being (SWB and SIB), respectively. Path analyses were performed to evaluate the relations between these parameters.ResultsThe path analysis indicated that rumination, SCI, and presenteeism were directly and negatively associated with SWB and SIB. Regarding indirect effects, rumination was negatively associated with SWB and SIB via SCI, presenteeism, and both SCI and presenteeism. Furthermore, SCI was negatively associated with SWB and SIB via presenteeism.ConclusionsThe results suggest that SCI and presenteeism mediate the associations of rumination with SWB and SIB in Japanese adult workers. To address the psychological well-being associated with rumination, evaluating SCI and presenteeism simultaneously may be useful in occupational mental health. This study provides key insights into the development of comprehensive intervention strategy based on the biopsychosocial perspective for worker’s psychological well-being.

Associations of Cognitive Complaints and Depressive Symptoms with Health-Related Quality of Life and Perceived Overall Health in Japanese Adult Volunteers.

Cognitive complaints, defined as perceived cognitive dysfunction in daily living, are associated with depressive symptoms. The associations of cognitive complaints and depressive symptoms with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and perceived overall health in Japanese adults remains unknown. To investigate these relationships, we evaluated a convenience sample of 525 Japanese adult volunteers (Mage: 41.3 ± 11.7; 238 male and 287 female). We used the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (evaluating cognitive complaints), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (evaluating depressive symptoms), EuroQol-5 Dimension-5 Level (EQ-5D-5L; evaluating HRQoL), and EuroQol-Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS; evaluating perceived overall health). Our path analyses suggested that both cognitive complaints and depressive symptoms had significant total effects on HRQoL and perceived overall health. Furthermore, cognitive complaints were not significantly associated directly with HRQoL and perceived overall health, whereas cognitive complaints were significantly associated with HRQoL and perceived overall health indirectly via depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms were significantly associated directly with HRQoL and perceived overall health. This study suggests that depressive symptoms may mediate the associations of cognitive complaints with HRQoL and perceived overall health. Thus, to address the HRQoL and perceived overall health associated with cognitive complaints, evaluation and intervention for depressive symptoms may be useful in public health.

The relationship among sleep reactivity, job-related stress, and subjective cognitive dysfunction: a cross-sectional study using path analysis.

Insomnia, job-related stress, and cognitive dysfunction affect the mental health of workers. However, the relationships among sleep reactivity, job-related stress, and subjective cognitive dysfunction in workers remains not fully understood. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the relationships among these variables in Japanese adult workers. In total, 536 adult workers in Japan were evaluated using the Japanese version of Ford Insomnia Response to Stress Test, Brief Job Stress Questionnaire, and Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment to assess sleep reactivity, job-related stress, and subjective cognitive function, respectively. Path analysis was also carried out. The results of the path analysis showed that sleep reactivity significantly influenced on subjective cognitive dysfunction directly and indirectly via job stressors and stress reaction. Our results may not be generalizable to underage workers because only adult workers were included, which is a limitation of this study. The results of the present study suggest that job-related stress mediates the effect of sleep reactivity on subjective cognitive dysfunction in Japanese adult workers. This underscores the need to evaluate the mediating effect of job-related stress in addressing the subjective cognitive dysfunction associated with insomnia in workers.

The mediating effects of perceived cognitive disturbances on reported sleep disturbance, presenteeism, and functional disability in Japanese adult workers

Sleep disturbance, cognitive disturbances, and presenteeism have been identified to contribute to functional disability in workers. However, the role of perceived cognitive disturbances in these relationships is yet to be well understood. Therefore, we examined the mediating effects of perceived cognitive disturbances in Japanese adult workers. We administered to 458 Japanese adult workers the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, Work Limitations Questionnaire 8, and Sheehan Disability Scale in order to assess reported sleep disturbance, perceived cognitive disturbances, presenteeism, and functional disability, respectively. We performed structural equation modeling to evaluate the relations among the variables. The results of the structural equation modeling showed that perceived cognitive disturbances significantly mediated the effects of reported sleep disturbance on presenteeism and functional disability; furthermore, presenteeism significantly mediated the effects of reported sleep disturbance and perceived cognitive disturbances on functional disability. This study was a cross-sectional design, which could have prevented us from evaluating the causal relationships among the parameters. Furthermore, all the participants were adults; hence, our results cannot be generalized to children or adolescents. Our results showed the mediating effects of perceived cognitive disturbances in the relations between reported sleep disturbance, presenteeism, and functional disability. To reduce the functional disability and presenteeism associated with reported sleep disturbance, the mediating effects of perceived cognitive disturbances in adult workers should be evaluated. In the future, development of interventions targeting perceived cognitive disturbances associated with reported sleep disturbance may be needed.

Mediating Roles of Cognitive Complaints on Relationships between Insomnia, State Anxiety, and Presenteeism in Japanese Adult Workers.

Complaints of cognitive functions (CCFs), defined as subjective cognitive dysfunction, affect social function; additionally, for workers, this condition is an important factor in presenteeism and mediates the effect of depressive symptoms on presenteeism. This study aimed to investigate whether CCFs mediate the relationships among insomnia, state anxiety (SA), and presenteeism. Participants were 471 Japanese adult workers evaluated using the Athens Insomnia Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Form Y), Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, and Work Limitations Questionnaire 8 to assess insomnia, SA, CCFs, and presenteeism, respectively. Path analysis was used to evaluate the correlations between variables. CCFs significantly mediated the associations among insomnia, SA, and presenteeism. To address the presenteeism associated with insomnia and SA, it may be useful to assess the mediating roles of CCFs.

The Role of Cognitive Complaints in the Relationship Between Trait Anxiety, Depressive Symptoms, and Subjective Well-Being and Ill-Being in Adult Community Volunteers.

PurposeTrait anxiety, depressive symptoms, and cognitive complaints affect mental health. The mediating role of cognitive complaints has been reported recently. However, the mediating effects of cognitive complaints in the relationships between trait anxiety, depressive symptoms, and subjective well-being (SWB) and ill-being (SIB) remain unknown. Therefore, we used path analyses to investigate these mediating effects.Materials and MethodsA total of 554 adult community volunteers in Japan were studied using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Form Y), Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, and Subjective Well-Being Inventory. These assessment tools evaluated trait anxiety, depressive symptoms, cognitive complaints, SWB, and SIB. Path analyses were performed in this study.ResultsPath analyses revealed that there were significant indirect effects, via cognitive complaints, of trait anxiety and depressive symptoms on SIB. However, there were no significant indirect effects of trait anxiety and depressive symptoms on SWB. There were significant indirect effects, via depressive symptoms, of trait anxiety on cognitive complaints, SWB, and SIB.ConclusionThe role of cognitive complaints may be different between SWB and SIB associated with trait anxiety and depressive symptoms. Evaluating the mediating effect of cognitive complaints may be more useful on SIB than SWB associated with trait anxiety and depressive symptoms. These findings may be useful when considering intervention targets in mental health.

Cognitive complaints in individuals recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder: A cross-sectional study

AimTo assess the differences in subjective cognitive dysfunction between major depressive disorder (MDD) and recently diagnosed Bipolar Disorder (BD) across euthymia and mood episodes. MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study corresponding to the second wave of a longitudinal study. The first wave consisted of subjects aged between 18 and 60 diagnosed with MDD. In the follow up after three years (second wave), conversion from MDD to BD diagnosis was assessed by qualified psychologists using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI-Plus). Subjects were categorized in four diagnostic groups: euthymic MDD, MDD in a current mood episode, euthymic BD, and BD in a current mood episode. All subjects completed the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA), an instrument specifically designed for detecting subjective cognitive deficits in BD. ResultsThe total sample (n = 468) included 410 subjects with MDD and 58 individuals recently diagnosed with BD. We subdivided the 2 groups based on their current mood state, and found a significant difference in COBRA total scores between euthymic BD individuals (median 17.00 [IQR: 8.75 - 20.75]) and euthymic MDD subjects (median 8.00 [IRQ: 5.00 - 14.00], p = 0.002), showing higher subjective cognitive dysfunction in individuals recently diagnosed with BD. The differences remained significant after adjusting for the presence of lifetime psychotic symptoms. We found no differences between MDD and BD during an acute mood episode. LimitationThe small sample size of individuals with BD. ConclusionThe findings suggest a higher presence of subjective cognitive complaints among individuals recently diagnosed with BD in comparison to individuals with MDD during euthymia.

Associations between cognitive impairment and illness awareness in fully remitted bipolar outpatients

The euthymic state of bipolar disorder is often characterized by impaired cognitive function. In this investigation, we hypothesized that subjective cognitive function is impaired and illness awareness is inadequate and we further explored the associations among cognitive complaints, objective cognitive functions, and current illness awareness in Japanese patients. Twenty-seven patients in remission and 27 healthy subjects were recruited in this study. The Japanese version of the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA) and Scale to Assess Unawareness in Mental Disorders (Japanese, SUMD-J) were used to assess each patient. All patients underwent neuropsychological tests for the assessment of objective cognitive functions. Only SUMD2.C (current awareness of the effects of medication) was significantly correlated with COBRA, and the objective cognitive assessments, Word Fluency Test and Stroop Test Reaction Time, represented significant correlations with SUMD1.C (current awareness of mental illness). In remitted bipolar outpatients, both the objective and subjective cognitive functions were found to be associated with illness awareness. However, subjective and objective cognitive functions differed in the related illness awareness subscales in fully remitted bipolar outpatients.

Structural equation modeling approach to explore the influence of childhood maltreatment in adults.

BackgroundChildhood maltreatment affects social functioning in the general adult population. However, how child abuse affects functional disability in adulthood remains unknown. Thus, we investigated the correlation between child abuse, depressive symptoms, cognitive complaints, and functional disability in adult community volunteers.MethodsParticipants (N = 556) completed the Child Abuse and Trauma Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, and Sheehan Disability Scale. Multiple regression analyses and structural equation modeling were performed to evaluate scale correlations.ResultsStructural equation modeling showed that the direct effect of childhood maltreatment on depressive symptoms, the indirect effect of childhood maltreatment on cognitive function via depressive symptoms, and the indirect effects of childhood maltreatment on functional disability via depressive symptoms and via cognitive function were all significant. The direct effects of childhood maltreatment on cognitive function and functional disability were not significant. There was no significant association between variables.LimitationsCross-sectional designs cannot identify causal relationships between parameters. Participants were adult volunteers from the community; therefore, results may not be generalizable to individuals with psychiatric disorders. Sociodemographic variability was a limitation because we used self-reported childhood maltreatment.ConclusionsChildhood maltreatment indirectly affects functional disability via depressive symptoms and via cognitive function through depressive symptoms. We suggest that depressive symptoms and cognitive function play crucial roles in the influence of childhood maltreatment on functional disability in adult community volunteers.

Associations among childhood parenting, affective temperaments, depressive symptoms, and cognitive complaints in adult community volunteers

Background:Correlations between depressive symptoms and affective temperaments or quality of childhood parenting have been investigated previously; however, how childhood parenting and affective temperaments affect cognitive complaints remains unknown. Thus, we evaluated correlations among childhood parenting, affective temperaments, depressive symptoms, and cognitive complaints in adults. Methods:Participants (N = 490) completed the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Auto-questionnaire version (TEMPS-A), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA). Multiple regression analyses and structural equation modeling were performed to evaluate scale correlations. Results:As per structural equation modeling, the direct effect of PHQ-9 and four subscales (cyclothymic, depressive, irritable, and anxious temperament) of TEMPS-A on COBRA were significant; the indirect effect of the four subscales of TEMPS-A on COBRA via PHQ-9 was significant; the direct effect of the three subscales (paternal care, maternal care, and maternal overprotection) of PBI on PHQ-9 and four subscales of TEMPS-A were significant; the indirect effect of the three subscales of PBI on PHQ-9 via the four subscales of TEMPS-A was significant. LimitationsCross-sectional designs cannot identify causal relationships between parameters. As participants were adult volunteers from the community, results may not be generalizable to individuals with psychiatric disorders. ConclusionsChildhood parenting affects cognitive complaints indirectly via affective temperaments and depressive symptoms in adult community volunteers. An important role of affective temperaments and depressive symptoms in the effects of childhood parenting on cognitive complaints is suggested.

Associations between the depressive symptoms, subjective cognitive function, and presenteeism of Japanese adult workers: a cross-sectional survey study

BackgroundPresenteeism has attracted much attention in the research into mental health. However, how cognitive complaints and depressive symptoms affect presenteeism remains unknown. Therefore, this study examined the correlation between subjective cognitive impairment, depressive symptoms, and work limitations.MethodsWe collected data from 477 adult workers in Japan. We evaluated subjective cognitive function using the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA), depressive symptoms with the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9), and work limitations with the Work Limitations Questionnaire 8 (WLQ-8). The relations between depressive symptoms, cognitive complaints, and work limitations were examined using Spearman’s rank correlations and multiple regression analysis. It was hypothesized that cognitive complaints would mediate the effects of depressive symptoms on work productivity loss, which was tested using path analysis.ResultsThe results indicated that cognitive complaints were significantly correlated with work limitations and depressive symptoms. Multiple regression analysis, using the WLQ-8 productivity loss score as the dependent variable, revealed that COBRA and PHQ-9 scores were significant predictors of work productivity loss. We performed path analysis using PHQ-9, COBRA, and WLQ-8 productivity loss scores and created a path diagram, which revealed that the direct effects of both depressive symptoms and cognitive dysfunction on work productivity loss were statistically significant. Moreover, depressive symptoms indirectly affected work productivity loss through subjective cognitive impairment. There was no significant interaction effect between depressive symptoms and cognitive complaints.ConclusionsOur results suggest that work limitations may be predicted by not only depressive symptoms but also cognitive complaints. Moreover, subjective cognitive impairment may mediate the effect of depressive symptoms on presenteeism among adult workers.

Subjective cognitive dysfunction in patients with bipolar disorder: The prevalence, related factors and effects on predicting psychosocial functioning and suicidal ideation

Persistent cognitive deficits are prevalent during all stages of bipolar disorder (BD). However, few studies have examined subjective cognitive complaints in patients with BD. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and relevant factors of subjective cognitive functioning and its potential effects on predicting psychosocial functioning and suicidal ideation in BD. Ninety-two patients with BD type I (including 42 depressed patients and 50 euthymic patients) and 60 healthy individuals were recruited for this study. All participants were assessed with a battery of neuropsychological tests examining attention and processing speed, visual memory, working memory and executive functions, as well as the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment, the Global Assessment of Functioning scale and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation. Bipolar patients exhibited worse subjective cognitive dysfunction compared with healthy individuals, and depressed patients expressed more cognitive complaints than euthymic bipolar patients. In bipolar group, psychosocial functioning, suicidal ideation and occupational status were the main relevant factors of subjective cognitive functioning. Subjective cognitive functioning could also predict psychosocial functioning and suicidal ideation. Depressive symptoms moderated the associations between objective cognitive functioning and suicidal ideation, but could not moderate the correlations between cognitive functioning and psychosocial functioning. These findings suggest that subjective cognitive assessment should be further emphasized in clinical practice.
