Chemical Quality Parameters of Mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco.) Fruits Influenced by different Organic Sources

A field experiment was carried out during the year 2021-22 and 2022-23 on 12 years old mandarin plants at the Instructional Farm, Department of Fruit Science, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Jhalawar. The experiment was consisting of 21 treatments of different organic source of NPK viz., vermicompost, cotton fortified vermicompost, neem cake, cotton cake, mustard cake and bio fertilizers such as PSB and VAM with three levels of recommendation dose of fertilizers. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. Among different treatments, treatment T9 (75 % RDF + 10 kg Vermicompost + 7.5 kg Neem cake + 50 g PSB) was found best with regards to maximum pooled TSS (11.74 0B), reducing sugar (6.30%) non-reducing sugar (2.62%), total sugar (8.92%) per cent, sugar/acid ratio (14.40), ascorbic acid (53.08mg/100g) and juice (46.57%). Therefore, based on two years experimentation, use of organic source of nutrients with bio-fertilizers favoured biochemical compounds of Nagpur Mandarin fruits.

Evaluation of F1 hybrids against root knot nematode (<i>Meloidogyne incognita</i>) resistance in Brinjal (<i>Solanum melongena</i> L.)

Brinjal is one of the most important commercial solanaceous vegetable crops. Root knot nematodes cause severe yield losses in brinjal both in open and poly house conditions. Host plant resistance is considered to be a viable solution and cost-effective method to manage the root knot nematodes. Ten genotypes along with their nineteen F1 hybrids were screened for resistance to root knot nematode and biochemical basis of resistance was assessed. Two F1 hybrids viz., IIHR-824 x VI046101, IIHR-824 x IIHR-766, parents viz., IIHR-824 and VI046103 were found to be resistance to M. incognita with gall index/ egg mass index of 1. Three F1 hybrids, IIHR-824 x IIHR-356, IIHR-824 x IIHR-835, VI046103 x IIHR-834 showed moderately resistant reaction. The root biochemical compounds analysis indicated that, total phenolic content (67.05 mg/g) and flavonoids (121.32 mg/g) were found higher in the inoculated roots of resistant line i.e. IIHR-824 indicating their role in conferring resistance. The identified F1 hybrids having resistance can be explored for commercial cultivation.

A Study of the Bioactive Compounds, Antioxidant Capabilities, Antibacterial Effectiveness, and Cytotoxic Effects on Breast Cancer Cell Lines Using an Ethanolic Extract from the Aerial Parts of the Indigenous Plant Anabasis aretioïdes Coss. & Moq.

Anabasis aretioïdes contain numerous bioactive compounds that provide several advantages, including antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic characteristics. This study aimed to make a hydroethanolic extract from the aerial part of the plant, analyze its biochemical compounds, and test its biological activities. From HPLC-DAD analysis, cinnamic acid, sinapic acid, and vanillin bioactives were found to be the main compounds in the extract. The spectrometric tests revealed that the extract was rich in flavonoids (8.52 ± 0.32 mg RE/100 g DW), polyphenols (159.32 ± 0.63 mg GAE/100 g DW), and condensed tannins (8.73 ± 0.23 mg CE/100 g DW). The extract showed significant antioxidant activity. There were strong correlations between the amount of flavonoid or polyphenol and the antioxidant assays, including ABTS, DPPH, β-carotene, and TAC. The extract also showed highly effective results against Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis as well as against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and showed promising cytotoxicity against breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. The in silico modeling of the bioactive compounds contained in the extract illustrated their interaction mode with the active sites of particular target proteins, and it showed that rutin had the strongest effect on stopping NADPH oxidase enzyme, with a glide score of −6.889 Kcal/mol. Sinapic acid inhibited E. coli beta-ketoacyl-[acyl carrier protein] synthase (−7.517 kcal/mol), and apigenin showed high binding affinity to S. aureus nucleoside di-phosphate kinase, with −8.656 kcal/mol. Succinic acid has the strongest anticancer effect for caspase-3, with a glide score of −8.102 kcal/mol. These bioactive components may be beneficial as antioxidant and antibacterial applications in medicine, foods, natural cosmetics, and breast cancer prevention in the future. As a result, the use of this indigenous plant must be considered to maximize its value and preservation.

Metabolites Obtained from Boraginaceae Plants as Potential Cosmetic Ingredients-A Review.

One of the challenges of the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries is to deliver biochemical compounds that can be advantageous for the skin. Research on Boraginaceae taxa has confirmed their use in traditional medicine and proved the potential biological importance of various molecules in cosmetology. The main classes of valuable compounds associated with Boraginaceae taxa are fatty acids, including γ-linolenic acid, essential oils, phenolic acids (e.g., rosmarinic acid), flavonoids, anthocyanins, tannins, and saponins. Highly specific are naphthoquinone pigments (including shikonin) and allantoin. Another distinguishing feature is the accumulation of silica (silicon dioxide) in trichomes. Some taxa produce mucilages. However, pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) with toxic properties are also found (mainly in Symphytum spp.); therefore, their applications should be avoided. Extracts or individual compounds of Boraginaceae plants are characterized by antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-irritant, antiaging, and photoprotective activities. Boraginaceae products are widespread in the cosmetic industry as ingredients of creams, balms, lotions, gels, shampoos, lipsticks, perfumes, and deodorants. The most valuable for the cosmetic industry are raw materials obtained from the genera Alcanna Anchusa, Arnebia, Borago, Buglossoides, Cerinthe, Cordia, Echium, Ehretia, Eriodictyon, Glendora, Lappula, Lithospermum, Lycopsis, Macrotomia, Maharanga, Mertensia, Messerschmidia, Myosotis, Omphalodes, Onosma, Pulmonaria, Rindera, Symphytum, Trachystemon, and Trigonotis. Further research should focus on the search for active substances in other plants of the family.

The role of plant-derived melanin in enhancing <i>in vitro</i> growth and nutrient accumulation in potato varieties

Background: Melanins are versatile biopolymers found in a wide range of living organisms, contributing to the diverse colors observed in nature. Beyond their pigmentation role, melanins exhibit a variety of biological activities, including antioxidant, antitoxic, antitumor, photoprotective, antimicrobial, and radioprotective properties. These attributes make melanins valuable in fields such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. In this study, we investigated grape marc, a byproduct of wine production, as a novel source of water-soluble melanin extracted using sodium hydroxide. This approach not only repurposes agricultural waste but also explored melanin's role in optimizing in vitro plant cultivation. We evaluated the impact of melanin on the biochemical properties of potato plants, focusing on improvements in growth, rhizogenesis, and the nutritional composition of tubers. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of plant-derived melanin on the in vitro growth characteristics and biochemical composition of two potato varieties. Methods: This study took place in the tissue culture laboratory at the Scientific Center of Agrobiotechnology from 2021 to 2024. Apical meristems from the Nevsky and Impala potato varieties were used for in vitro regeneration. The research focused on the in vitro growth and adaptation of these plants under different melanin concentrations. Key growth parameters, chlorophyll content, and biochemical composition were analyzed to assess the impact of melanin on potato development. Results: The study found that melanin at a concentration of 0.028% significantly enhanced the in vitro growth and rhizogenesis of potato microstems, with optimal results in root number (12.30 per shoot) and shoot length (16.91 cm). Plants also showed earlier and more vigorous root formation, resembling an auxin-like effect. Higher melanin concentrations reduced these benefits. Additionally, plants treated with 0.028% melanin had a high acclimatization success rate (96%) and improved biochemical composition in tubers, with increases in dry matter, sugars, starch, and ascorbic acid, particularly in the Nevsky variety. Conclusion: Melanin significantly stimulated the in vitro growth and development of potato plants. Increasing melanin levels to an optimal threshold accelerated rhizogenesis and promoted vigorous root and shoot growth, evidenced by increased length and thickness. Acting similarly to auxin, melanin not only encouraged root formation but also enhanced shoot development, leading to improved plant adaptation. Additionally, melanin influenced the biochemical composition of potato tubers, including their nutritional content. These findings highlight the crucial role of melanin concentration in optimizing the growth and biochemical properties of potato varieties. Microalgal Metabolomes and Recent Biotechnological Advances for Their Industrial Application

In recent decades, microalgae have emerged as new sustainable resources for the production of various bioactive and biochemical compounds. These organisms are photosynthetic, use CO2 as their sole carbon source, and grow rapidly under different environmental conditions. This makes microalgae a promising source of feedstock for many bio-commodities. However, the economic viability for large-scale production through microalgal cells is limited to certain organisms. Recent advances in omics technologies, along with high-throughput approaches, have provided new insights for understanding microalgal metabolites. With the improvement in metabolomic technology, sensitivity for the detection of cellular metabolites has increased, and it has directly enhanced our understanding of cellular metabolism and the corresponding metabolic pathways. Moreover, these metabolic techniques, along with other omics technologies, help us to characterize the changes in the cellular functioning of the different cells under environmental conditions. Metabolomic research on microalgae explores new metabolites and the understanding of their biosynthesis at the metabolic level. In this review, we discuss how these metabolomics techniques are applied to microalgae to study their metabolic networks. Additionally, we also discuss how integrating other tools of systems biology can improve the productivity of microalgal cells, especially for industrially important commodities.

Comprehensive analysis of biochemical compounds, chemical elements and metabolites modifications in maize plants infected with maize rayado fino virus (MRFV)

Maize cultivation is crucial worldwide, especially in Latin America. However, diseases related to corn stunt complex have significantly impacted crops, reducing grain productivity and quality. Maize rayado fino virus (MRFV) is part of this complex, and its symptom is characterized by chlorotic dots along veins and, depending on maize genotype, there will be stunting and an impact on the corn cob development, which can lead to productivity losses. However, this intricate plant-pathogen relationship is yet not well understood. Here, we investigated the effects of MRFV transmitted by the corn leafhopper Dalbulus maidis in infected plants in their early stage of development. To show the impact of the viral infection in the maize plant, we performed biochemical and chemical analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The total set of analyses showed that changes in chemical and biochemical compounds, as well as in metabolites composition and activities, can be perceived in MRFV-infected maize plants when compared to healthy plants. An increase in the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and β-glucanase was detected, whereas small changes have been identified in antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds. For chemical components, unique changes were observed, mainly the increase in the presence of some elements such as calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), sodium (Na), and iron (Fe). We identified 20 metabolites of the amino acids, organic compounds, and carbohydrates classes in maize plants which are regulated during MRFV infection. Maize plants reacted to D. maidis herbivory by modulating both enzymatic and non-enzymatic activities, as well as chemical compounds. This research offers insights into the responses of maize against MRFV and sheds light on parameters to be used on the search of rayado fino viral disease resistance for a sustainable production.

Upcycling food waste as a low-cost cultivation medium for Chlorella sp. microalgae.

Global food loss and waste have raised environmental concerns regarding the generation of greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide and methane gas), which directly contribute to climate change. To address these concerns, the present research aims to upcycle food waste into an alternative culture medium for the cultivation of microalgae. Various parameters including pretreatment of food waste (i.e., autoclave and non-autoclave), concentration of food waste culture medium (i.e., 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90% and 100%), harvesting efficiency and biochemical compounds of Chlorella sp. microalgae were carried out. Based on the preliminary findings, the highest biomass concentration obtained from 10% food waste culture medium in the autoclave for Chlorella sp., including strains FSP-E, ESP-31 and CY-1, were 2.869 ± 0.022, 2.385 ± 0.018 and 0.985 ± 0.0026 g L-1, respectively. Since Chlorella vulgaris FSP-E exhibited the highest biomass concentration, this microalgal strain was selected to examine the subsequent parameters. Cultivation of C. vulgaris FSP-E in 100FW achieves a biomass concentration of 4.465 ± 0.008 g L-1 with biochemical compounds of 6.94 ± 1.396, 248.24 ± 0.976 and 406.23 ± 0.593 mg g-1 for lipids, carbohydrates and proteins, respectively. This study shows that using food waste as an alternative culture medium for C. vulgaris FSP-E can achieve substantial biomass productivity and biochemical content. This research work would contribute to the concept of net zero emission and transitioning toward a circular bioeconomy by upcycling food waste as an alternative culture medium for the cultivation of microalgae. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Comparative Analysis of Volatile Compounds and Biochemical Activity of Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. Essential Oil Extracted from Distinct Shaded Plants.

The application of shade during plants' growth significantly alters the biochemical compounds of the essential oil (EO). We aimed to analyze the effect of shade on the volatile compounds and biochemical activities of EO extracted from Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. (C. xanthorrhiza) plants. Four shading conditions were applied: no shading (S0), 25% (S25), 50% (S50), and 75% shade (S75). The volatile compounds of EO extracted from each shaded plant were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiproliferative activities of EO were also investigated. We found that shade application significantly reduced the C. xanthorrhiza EO yield but increased its aroma and bioactive compound concentration. α-curcumene, xanthorrhizol, α-cedrene, epicurzerenone, and germacrone were found in EO extracted from all conditions. However, β-bisabolol, curzerene, curcuphenol, and γ-himachalene were only detected in the EO of S75 plants. The EO of the shaded plants also showed higher antioxidant activity as compared to unshaded ones. In addition, the EO extracted from S75 exerted higher antiproliferative activity on HeLa cells as compared to S0. The EO extracted from S0 and S25 showed higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria than kanamycin. Our results suggest that shade applications alter the composition of the extractable volatile compounds in C. xanthorrhiza, which may result in beneficial changes in the biochemical activity of the EO.

Impact of fertilizer doses on soil properties, vegetative growth, fruit quality and biochemical compounds of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch)

Fertilizers are important for plant growth, yield enhancement, and achieving food security, but overdose can have negative effects. This study sought to determine the impact of different fertilizer doses on soil properties, vegetative growth, fruit quality, and biochemical compounds of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch) cv. ‘Camarosa’. During the years 2022-2023, strawberry seedlings were grown in pots in a greenhouse. Four increasing dosages of fertilizers were applied. The results showed that following treatment, electrical conductivity and soil organic matter rose to maximum values of 176.26 µS. cm-1 and 2.63%, respectively, with d2 treatment. However, the pH was initially high before dropping considerably to 7.34 with d4 dosage. Treatment d1 was highly suggested for enhanced fruit number (5.8) and total yield (729 g. plant-1). The treatment d2 produced the highest fruit weight (24.3 g), volume (27.71 cm3), length (5.55 cm), and width (5.15 cm). The medium dose d3 drastically increased leaf area (2652.76 cm2), total soluble solids (7.4 °Brix), total phenols (1,332.54 mg GAE· L-1) and antioxidant activity (89.53%), but not significantly. The maximum petiole length (12.66 cm), petiole number (29.4), chlorophyll content, runners number (6), roots length (22.33 cm), fresh root and shoot weight (73.11 and 96.41 g), root and shoot dry weight (10.84 and 30.64 g), were recorded at d4 treatment. In control plants, all of these measures were lower, despite having higher fruit pH (3.72), titratable acidity (0.87%), and flowers number (4.40). In conclusion, increasing fertilizer doses may affect soil and strawberry plant qualities, and farmers must use them appropriately.

Biochemical and physicochemical characteristics and volatile profiles of Erzincan Tulum cheese coagulated by herb-fortified artisanal lamb rennet

The characteristics of Erzincan Tulum cheese (ETC), an artisanal ewe-milk cheese and the first cheese with the designation of origin in Türkiye, are closely related to the geographical location of production and the human factors influencing every stage of the production process. This study aims to determine the influence of different coagulants (namely, herb-fortified artisanal lamb rennet (ALR), artisanal calf rennet (ACR), and commercial calf rennet (CCR)) on the biochemical, physicochemical characteristics, and volatile compounds of ETC, produced on the Heybeli plateau of the Erzincan province. Using artisanal rennet increased total solids, fat content, and acidity while decreasing pH and aw values. The highest PTA-SN (soluble nitrogen in 5 % phosphotungstic acid, w/v) and TCA-SN (soluble nitrogen in 12 % trichloroacetic acid w/w) values at the end of the ripening period (day 150 of storage) were observed in the ALR-Cheese (ALR-C). Furthermore, this cheese exhibited the highest rate of lipolysis (P < 0.01). Electrophoretograms revealed that αs-1 and β-casein degradation rates were the most significant in ALR-C. Following the 30th day of storage, the highest counts of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were found in ALR-C. The most rapid reduction of coliforms, E. coli, and yeast-mold was observed in this sample throughout the storage. Eighty-nine volatile compounds were identified in the samples. Particularly noteworthy, ALR-C exhibited the highest ratios of hexanoic, octanoic, and decanoic acids after 90 days of storage. Additionally, steroid compounds were exclusively detected in this sample. The findings of this research make a substantial contribution to the existing literature concerning rennet types and the aromatic profile of ETC. These aspects are crucial for further investigations to enhance the cheese's quality and safety.

Biotechnological frontiers in harnessing allelopathy for sustainable crop production.

Allelopathy, the phenomenon in which plants release biochemical compounds that influence the growth and development of neighbouring plants, presents promising opportunities for revolutionizing agriculture towards sustainability. This abstract explores the role of biotechnological advancements in unlocking the potential of allelopathy for sustainable crop production and its applications in agriculture, ecology, and natural resource management. By combining molecular, genetic, biochemical, and bioinformatic tools, researchers can unravel the complexities of allelopathic interactions and their potential for sustainable crop production and environmental stewardship. The development of novel management methods for weed control is getting a lot of attention with the introduction of new genetic technologies such as Gene drive, Transgene technologies, Gene silencing, Marker-assisted selection (MAS), and Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR-Cas9). By strengthening competitive characteristics these tools hold great promise for boosting crops' ability to compete with weeds. Considering recent literature, this review highlights the genetic, transcriptomics, and metabolomics approaches to allelopathy. Employing allelopathic properties in agriculture offer sustainable benefits like natural weed management, pest management, and reduced chemical pollution, but challenges include environmental factors, toxicity, regulatory hurdles, and limited resources. Effective integration requires continued research, regulatory support, and farmer education​. Also, we aimed to identify the biotechnological domains requiring more investigation and to provide the basis for future advances through this assessment.

Improving the performance of the photosynthetic apparatus of Citrus sinensis with the use of chitosan-selenium nanocomposite (CS + Se NPs) under salinity stress

BackgroundAbiotic stress, such as salinity, affects the photosynthetic apparatus of plants. It is reported that the use of selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs), and biochemical compounds such as chitosan (CS) increase the tolerance of plants to stress conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the potential of Se NPs, CS, and their composite (CS + Se NPs) in improving the photosynthetic apparatus of C. sinensis under salt stress in greenhouse conditions. The grafted seedlings of C. sinensis cv. Valencia after adapting to the greenhouse condition, were imposed with 0, 50, and 100 mM NaCl. After two weeks, the plants were foliar sprayed with distilled water (control), CS (0.1% w/v), Se NPs (20 mg L− 1), and CS + Se NPs (10 and 20 mg L− 1). Three months after treatment, the levels of photosynthetic pigments, leaf gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence in the treated plants were evaluated.ResultsUnder salinity stress, total chlorophyll, carotenoid, and SPAD values decreased by 31%, 48%, and 28% respectively, and Fv/Fm also decreased compared to the control, while the ratio of absorption flux (ABS), dissipated energy flux (DI0) and maximal trapping rate of PSII (TR0) to RC (a measure of PSII apparent antenna size) were increased. Under moderate (50 mM NaCl) and intense (100 mM NaCl) salinity stress, the application of CS + Se NPs significantly increased the levels of photosynthetic pigments and the Fv/Fm value compared to plants treated with distilled water.ConclusionsIt may be inferred that foliar treatment with CS + Se NPs can sustain the photosynthetic ability of C. sinensis under salinity stress and minimize its deleterious effects on photosynthesis.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and labile organic compounds' spatial and temporal variations in coastal Indian groundwater: their bioavailability and transfer to neighboring coastal waters of India.

Submarine groundwater drainage (SGD) changes the elemental composition of the neighboring coastal ocean and impacts the biogeochemical cycles. To examine the seasonal and spatial variability in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and labile organic compound biochemical compounds like dissolved carbohydrates (TDCHO), dissolved proteins (TDPRO), and dissolved free amino acid (TDFAA) concentrations during the dry and wet periods, groundwater samples were taken at 90 locations (180 samples) along the Indian coast. The mean DOC contents in Indian coastal groundwaters were more significant than the global mean values. DOC, TDCHO, TDPRO, and TDFAA concentrations are higher during wet than dry periods. The DOC and labile organic compound showed a substantial positive association with soil organic carbon, and respective labile compounds in soil, population, and land usage and poor relation with woodland territories, implying that soil organic compounds leaching is a source of DOC and other labile organic compounds into the groundwater. DOC and other labile compounds concentrations were linearly associated with population density, land usage, and sewage production, demonstrating that anthropogenic activities tightly regulate the formation of DOC in groundwater. During the wet and dry periods, total labile organic compounds (TDCHO, TDFAA, and TDPRO) constituted 21% and 10.5% of DOC, respectively. Compared to the wet time, more aromatic compounds accumulated during the dry season but were less bioavailable. SGD DOC flux contributed 2-7% of riverine DOC flux to the coastal ocean. The SGD flux from the Indian subcontinent to the nearby northern Indian Ocean accounts for approximately 2% of the worldwide SGD flux. The effect of DOC flux via SGD on coastal bacterial activity, the plankton food web, and the oxygen minimum zone must be studied.

The quality of coffee is determined by various biochemical compounds, including chlorogenic acid, caffeine, trigonelline, sucrose, and oil, as well as the volatile metabolite profile in coffee beans. Genetic factors and environmental conditions at the coffee cultivation site influence the composition of these compounds. This study aimed to analyze the biochemical composition and volatile profile of various coffee samples, including Ateng, Tim-Tim, and Sigarar Utang, and investigate their correlation with microclimate factors. Different analytical methods were used to examine the green beans, including High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS) for caffeine, chlorogenic acids, sucrose, and trigonelline, Soxhlet methods for oil content determination, and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) for volatile compound analysis. The results showed distinct biochemical components and metabolite profiles among the three arabica coffee varieties. The Ateng variety had the highest concentrations of chlorogenic acid, while the Tim-Tim variety had the lowest content of these compounds. Trigonelline and caffeine content was similar across all varieties. Sucrose content was highest in the Sigarar Utang variety, while oil content was higher in the Ateng and Tim-Tim varieties compared to Sigarar Utang. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed significant metabolite variation among the three varieties, with PC1 and PC2 accounting for 69.2% of the variance. Furthermore, Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) successfully distinguished the three varieties and identified potential biomarker compounds for classification. Additionally, the study discovered that the environmental factor, specifically light intensity affected the sucrose and oil compounds in arabica green beans coffee. The study concluded that the three varieties' biochemical composition and volatile metabolites differed. Certain compounds were found to correlate with measured microclimatic factor.

Therapeutic Potential and Prospects of L-arginine in Various Diseases and its Clinical Intervention

Abstract: The goal of this review is to explored the therapeutic application of L-Arginine (L-ARG) against various pathological illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), cardiovascular disorder, mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, stroke-like episodes (MELAS), sickle cell anemia, tumour, epilepsy, erectile dysfunction therapy (ED), gestational hypertension (GH), and menopause issues. L-ARG is an important semi-essential alpha-amino acid that serves as a natural precursor for the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO). It is generally synthesized from proteinogenic amino acid proline through glutamine and glutamate. The degradation of L-ARG is a complex process due to the expression of multiple enzymes in the form of a substrate. The metabolism of L-ARG takes place in various multiple pathways, such as nitric oxide synthase, Arginine glycine amidinotransferase, and Arginine decarboxylase which results in the production of a diverse range of biochemical compounds, such as nitric oxide, polyamines, proline, glutamate, creanine, agmatine homoarginine, and urea. NO is a highly diffusible free radicle with a regulatory function in the heart and acts as an important vasodilator in intact endothelium. NO serves as an important neurotransmitter in the brain and a mediator of host defense in the immune system. L-ARG is also needed for ammonia detoxification, which is a very toxic chemical to the central nervous system. This review article focuses on the relevance of L-ARG in the prevention and treatment of a variety of illnesses.

Profiling the effects of starter cultures on biochemical compounds in fermented fish sauces and their relationships with sensory perceptions

SummaryIn this study, the effect of Lactiplantibacillus (L.) plantarum XL23 (Lp) and Saccharomyces (S.) cerevisiae RC212 (Sc) on flavour formation in fermented fish sauce production was investigated. The levels of, and relationship between, non‐volatile and volatile compounds responsible for taste and aroma were determined in fish sauce samples. Regarding non‐volatiles, the results showed that free amino acids and organic acids were significantly higher in Lp and Lp + Sc compared to traditional fish sauce. In fatty acids, there was an irregular distribution between the groups. In terms of volatile compounds, L. plantarum supported the presence of acidic compounds (1413.31 ng mL−1), while S. cerevisiae supported the presence of alcoholic compounds at high levels (3891.56 ng mL−1). Significant correlations between components proved the accuracy of analytical and sensory analyses and demonstrated the reliability of multi‐replicate statistical interactions. The results indicated that inoculation with starter cultures changed the taste and aroma in favour of the strains.

Biochemical foundation of the aroma and antioxidant activity of Indian traditional rice landrace Maharaji and the effect of radiation-induced mutagenesis on its metabolome

Maharaji rice, an aromatic variety with medium slender grains, is traditionally cultivated in the central regions of India. This study aimed to identify the biochemical compounds responsible for Maharaji rice's distinctive fragrance and enhance its agro-morphological traits through mutation breeding. Using Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis, forty major metabolites were identified which may be responsible for its characteristic aroma. The bioactive compounds included terpenes, flavonoids, and amino acids. Maharaji brown rice extract exhibited potent radical scavenging activity. Radiation-induced mutation breeding improved the agro-morphological traits and also triggered biochemical diversification in different mutants. Maharaji Mutant-2 exhibited improved aroma due to higher abundance of aromatic compounds, improved yield and morphological characters as compared to the parent. This study, for the first time identifies the compounds associated with the characteristic aroma of Maharaji rice. Global metabolomics may, therefore, expedite the selection of mutants with suitable aroma and desirable biological properties.

Mitigating Traumatic Brain Injury: A Narrative Review of Supplementation and Dietary Protocols.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) constitute a significant public health issue and a major source of disability and death in the United States and worldwide. TBIs are strongly associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, resulting in a host of negative health outcomes and long-term complications and placing a heavy financial burden on healthcare systems. One promising avenue for the prevention and treatment of brain injuries is the design of TBI-specific supplementation and dietary protocols centred around nutraceuticals and biochemical compounds whose mechanisms of action have been shown to interfere with, and potentially alleviate, some of the neurophysiological processes triggered by TBI. For example, evidence suggests that creatine monohydrate and omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) help decrease inflammation, reduce neural damage and maintain adequate energy supply to the brain following injury. Similarly, melatonin supplementation may improve some of the sleep disturbances often experienced post-TBI. The scope of this narrative review is to summarise the available literature on the neuroprotective effects of selected nutrients in the context of TBI-related outcomes and provide an evidence-based overview of supplementation and dietary protocols that may be considered in individuals affected by-or at high risk for-concussion and more severe head traumas. Prophylactic and/or therapeutic compounds under investigation include creatine monohydrate, omega-3 fatty acids, BCAAs, riboflavin, choline, magnesium, berry anthocyanins, Boswellia serrata, enzogenol, N-Acetylcysteine and melatonin. Results from this analysis are also placed in the context of assessing and addressing important health-related and physiological parameters in the peri-impact period such as premorbid nutrient and metabolic health status, blood glucose regulation and thermoregulation following injury, caffeine consumption and sleep behaviours. As clinical evidence in this research field is rapidly emerging, a comprehensive approach including appropriate nutritional interventions has the potential to mitigate some of the physical, neurological, and emotional damage inflicted by TBIs, promote timely and effective recovery, and inform policymakers in the development of prevention strategies.
