Effects of modified nanoscale carbon black on plant growth, root cellular morphogenesis, and microbial community in cadmium-contaminated soil.

Previous researches have confirmed that modified nanoscale carbon black (MCB) can decrease the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil and accumulation in plant tissues, resulting in the increase of biomass of plant. However, as a nanoparticle, the effects of MCB on plant cell morphology and microbial communities in Cd-contaminated soil are poorly understood. This study, through greenhouse experiments, investigated the effects of MCB as an amendment for 5mg·kg-1 Cd-contaminated soil on plant growth, plant cellular morphogenesis, and microbial communities. Two types of plants, metal-tolerant plant ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), and hyperaccumulator plant chard (Beta vulgaris L. var. cicla) were selected. The results indicated that adding MCB to Cd-contaminated soil, the dry biomass of shoot ryegrass and chard increased by 1.07 and 1.05 times, respectively, comparing with control group (the treatment without MCB). Meanwhile, the physiological characteristics of plant root denoted that adding MCB reduced the damage caused by Cd to plants. The acid phosphatase activity of soils treated with MBC was higher and the dehydrogenase activity was lower than control group during whole 50days of incubation, while the urease and catalase activity of soils treated with MBC were higher than control group after 25days of incubation. When compared with the treatment without MCB, the abundances of nitrogen-functional bacteria (Rhodospirillum and Nitrospira) and phosphorus-functional bacteria (Bradyrhizobium and Flavobacterium) increased but that of nitrogen-functional bacteria, Nitrososphaera, declined. The presence of MCB resulted in increased microbial community abundance by reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil, while increasing the abundance of plants by increasing the amount of available nitrogen in soil. The result of this study suggests that MCB could be applied to the in-situ immobilization of heavy metal in contaminated soils because of its beneficial effects on plants growth, root cellular morphogenesis, and microbial community.

Effect of Calcium Magnesium Phosphate on Remediation Paddy Soil Contaminated with Cadmium Using Lime and Sepiolite

The combined application of amendments, such as hydroxyhistidine and zeolite, can effectively reduce both the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil and the bioaccumulation of heavy metals by rice, thus improving the safety of agricultural products. In this work, the effect of calcium magnesium phosphorus fertilizer on the content of available Cd in paddy soil and Cd accumulation in various parts of rice by lime combined with sepiolite was studied using a plot experiment. The results show that calcium magnesium phosphorus fertilizer can significantly promote the remediation effect of lime combined with sepiolite. Compared with the treatment with lime combined with sepiolite, the application of calcium magnesium phosphorus fertilizer significantly decreases the available Cd content in the soil and the Cd accumulation in the brown rice. With calcium magnesium phosphorus fertilizer of 2250 kg·hm-2, Cd2+ in soil formed less soluble cadmium phosphate, the content of extractable, reducible and oxidizable Cd was reduced, and the percentage of available Cd content in the soil was significantly (P<0.05) reduced by 46.97%. Meanwhile, the Cd content in brown rice was decreased to 0.04 mg·kg-1, which is far lower than the level required by the National Standard for Food Safety (GB 2762-2017) (0.2 mg·kg-1). In addition, the production of brown rice was increased by 28.34%. Correlation analysis shows that the Cd content in rice roots, straw, and brown rice was positively correlated with the available Cd content in soil (P<0.01), and between the Cd content in brown rice and in roots and straw (P<0.01). In general, the results indicate that the available Cd content in soil was the key factor affecting the Cd content in brown rice. The application of calcium magnesium phosphorus fertilizer can improve the amendment of lime combined with sepiolite for available Cd in soil and reduce the Cd absorption of rice roots and straw so that the Cd content in brown rice is reduced. The results show that the application of calcium magnesium phosphorus fertilizer enhances the effect of reducing the Cd content in brown rice by lime combined with sepiolite. Finally, it can both meet the safety requirements of brown rice quality and increase the yield of brown rice in Cd-contaminated paddy soil.

The impact of long-term biosolids application (>100 years) on soil metal dynamics

Biosolids application to arable land is a common, and cost-effective, practice but the impact of prolonged disposal remains uncertain. We evaluated the dynamics of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) at a long-established ‘dedicated’ sewage treatment farm. Soil metal concentrations exceeded regulations governing application of biosolids to non-dedicated arable land. However, measurement of isotopic exchangeability of Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb demonstrated support for the ‘protection hypothesis’ in which biosolids constituents help immobilise potential toxic metals (PTMs). Metal concentrations in a maize crop were strongly, and almost equally, correlated with all ‘capacity-based’ and ‘intensity-based’ estimates of soil metal bioavailability. This was attributable to high correlations between soil factors controlling bioavailability (organic matter, phosphate etc.) on a site receiving a single source of PTMs. Isotopic analysis of the maize crop suggested contributions to foliar Pb from soil dust originating from neighbouring fields. There was also clear evidence of metal-specific effects of biosolids on soil metal lability. With increasing metal concentrations there was both decreasing lability of Cd and Pb, due to interaction with increasing phosphate concentrations, and increasing lability of Ni, Cu and Zn due to weaker soil binding. Such different responses to prolonged biosolids disposal to arable soil should be considered when setting regulatory limits.

The effectiveness of nanobiochar for reducing phytotoxicity and improving soil remediation in cadmium-contaminated soil

There is growing concern that Cd in soils can be transferred to plants, resulting in phytotoxicity and threats to human health via the food chain. Biochar has been reported to be a soil amendment capable of reducing the bioavailability of metals in soil by electrostatic interactions, ionic exchange and the specific binding of metal ions by surface ligands. To determine the effects of Cd contamination and nanobiochar on the growth characteristics of plants, the dynamics of Cd in soil were explored in Petri dish and pot experiments (0%, 0.2%, 0.5% and 1% nanobiochar), respectively. The diversity, distribution and composition of the bacterial community in treated soil were monitored by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the germination potential and height and weight of plants were significantly decreased in Cd-treated soil samples (P < 0.05). The Cd content of Brassica chinensis L. in the treated soil groups was lower than that in the untreated soil groups (P < 0.05) after nanobiochar application. The application of biochar significantly improved the microbial biomass, microorganism abundance and diversity of Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes in Cd-contaminated soil and reduced the diversity of Proteobacteria, which was relatively more persistent than in the contaminated sites without biochar application. The results of this study provide theoretical and technical support for understanding the environmental behavior of nanopassivators, thus enhancing the role of biochar in the remediation of soil pollution.

Simultaneous removal of multiple heavy metals from soil by washing with citric acid and ferric chloride.

The remediation of soil contaminated with multiple heavy metals is a matter of great concern due to its serious threat to the ecosystem and human health. Batch and slurry reactor soil washing experiments were conducted to explore the removal of Cd, Cr, Pb and Zn using 7 agents. Citric acid (CA) and ferric chloride (FeCl3) exhibited an obvious synergistic effect on the removal of heavy metals. Furthermore, the concentration of heavy metals in different soil particle size fractions was closely related to the soil element concentrations. Fine sand (0.05–0.25 mm) had a strong adsorption capacity for Cr and Pb because of the high Mn concentration. Notably, heavy metals in smaller-size soil particles could be efficiently removed by CA and FeCl3. After remediation, the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil decreased. The potential ecological risk of heavy metals in soil reduced from an extremely high level to a low level. Moreover, some elements (e.g. Al, Mn and Fe) and organic matter in soil were dissolved by CA and FeCl3, which accelerated the desorption of heavy metals from the soil. In a slurry reactor experiment, the removal efficiencies of Cd, Cr, Pb and Zn were 94.8%, 79.5%, 92.7% and 97.2%, respectively. The combination of CA and FeCl3 is a feasible practice to remediate soil contaminated by multiple heavy metals.

A field study of vertical mobility and relative bioavailability of Cu and Ni in calcareous soil

ABSTRACT The vertical mobility of heavy metals in the soil profile may affect their bioavailability. In the present study, a field experiment was conducted for 11 years to investigate the vertical mobility of copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) and the effects on their bioavailability in soil. It was found that the type and concentration of heavy metals are factors that affect mobility. After 11 years, the mobility and movement of Ni were greater than that of Cu from topsoil (0–20 cm) to subsoil (20–60 cm). The vertical mobility of Cu decreased with the increased addition of Cu, while Ni had the highest vertical mobility when its concentration was the highest in soil. The aging processes and vertical movement could lead to decreases in Cu availability (68–78%) and Ni availability (83–89%). For the decrease of Cu availability in soil, the main driving factor was the vertical movement at low added concentrations, but gradually became aging processes with the increase of added Cu concentrations, while Ni had the opposite tendency. Compared with Cu, aging and vertical mobility played a more prominent role in decreasing the bioavailability of Ni, the bioavailability of Cu changed less than that of Ni after 11 years. The decreased rate of Cu in wheat grains was about 0.26–1.05% while that of Ni was about 2.48–9.46% per year from 2009 to 2018. Therefore, the influence of the vertical downward movement of heavy metals should not be ignored in the assessment of the risk and bioavailability of heavy metals in soil.

Greenhouse assessment of citric acid-assisted phytoremediation of cadmium by willows (Salix spp.) - effect on photosynthetic performances and metal tolerance

The aim of this study was to define effects of cadmium (Cd) applied alone and in combination with citric acid, on the plant tolerance, accumulation, translocation and photosynthesis in willows (Salix viminalis, S. matsudana and S. alba). Low metal bioavailability in soil is often the limiting factor for phytoextraction, thus citric acid was used as a chelating agent aiming to improve metal solubility and therefore accelerates phytoextraction. Willows were grown by soil culture method in semi-controlled conditions (greenhouse) with two different Cd concentrations (3 and 6 ppm), applied separately and in combination with citric acid (20 mM/kg of dry soil), followed by control plants. The reduction of plant growth, biomass, photosynthesis parameters, chlorophyll and carotenoids were induced by Cd supplied. The addition of citric acid showed beneficial effects on different morpho-physiological levels through alleviate stress conditions as well as enhancing overall phytoextraction. Citric acid (CA) has increased transport of the accumulated Cd from the roots to aerial part in S.viminalis and S.alba in comparison with same treatments without CA, as well as tolerance of analyzed clones. Significant depressive effect on photosynthetic CO2 assimilation was evident in plants grown in soil with Cd applied. A significant negative correlation between biomass production, leaf area, and photosynthesis due to the presence of Cd in plant tissue was observed in S. viminalis. The effects of organic amendments on heavy metals bioavailability in mine impacted soil and associated human health risk

Accumulation of heavy metals in soil and agricultural products is of great concern as it not only affects crop growth and yield but also food safety and marketability. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of different organic amendments on toxic metal uptake by radish (Raphanus sativus L.). A pot experiment was conducted using garden soil as control and the contaminated soil collected from mine dumps of chromite mine, soap stone mine, quartz mine, manganese mine. Garden and mine impacted soil was mixed with vermicompost, leaf compost and spent mushroom compost at 1:1:1 ratio following a completely randomized block design. Results indicated that highest Cd (2.62 mg kg−1) and Cr (13.6 mg kg−1) concentration was reported in chromite mine soil, while Pb (23.3 mg kg−1) and Mn (59.2 mg kg−1) concentration as recorded in soap stone mine and manganese mine impacted soil, respectively. All the growth parameters and heavy metal concentrations were significantly affected by the amendments. The pollution load assessment of different mining soil revealed that the soil was moderately to considerably polluted with various heavy metals, particularly Cd with CF, Igeo and Eri values of 2.26, 0.45 and 67.68, respectively. Mining soils with high amount of heavy metals negatively affected radish growth and yield, while organic fertilizers amendment reduced heavy metals availability, increased radish growth and minimized human health risk. Among selected organic fertilizers vermicompost was more effective and reduced Cd, Cr, Pb and Mn uptake by 32.5, 50.25, 44.50 and 42.25 %, respectively, and improved radish growth, food quality and reduce human-health risk.

Research Progress of Biochar in Memediation of Contaminated Soil

Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced by pyrolysis and carbonization of biomass raw materials (mainly agricultural wastes) under complete or partial hypoxia. Because of its excellent structural properties, it is often applied to contaminated soil as a remediation agent and soil amendment agent. In recent years, biochar has attracted widespread attention in environmental remediation, and has become a research hotspot in current environmental science. This paper introduces the biochar treatment of soil pollution by introducing the concept, preparation method and physicochemical properties of biochar. The research progress of biochar in the treatment of heavy metal contaminated soil in recent years was reviewed. The effect of biochar on the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil was discussed. However, there are still some shortcomings in current research and remediation methods. It is expected to find environmentally friendly, scientific and reasonable materials and technologies to repair soil pollution.

Effects of EDTA and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on plant growth and heavy metal uptake of hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance

Phytoremediation is a cost-effective and environment-friendly strategy for decontaminating heavy-metal-contaminated soil. However, the practical use of phytoremediation is constrained by the low biomass of plants and low bioavailability of heavy metals in soil. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of the metal chelator ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and EDTA in combination with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (Burkholderia sp. D54 or Burkholderia sp. D416) on the growth and metal uptake of the hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance. According to the results, EDTA application decreased shoot and root biomass by 50% and 43%, respectively. The soil respiration and Cd, Pb, Zn uptake were depressed, while the photosynthetic rate, glutathione and phytochelatin (PC) contents were increased by EDTA application. Interestingly, Burkholderia sp. D54 and Burkholderia sp. D416 inoculation significantly relieved the inhibitory effects of EDTA on plant growth and soil respiration. Compared with the control, EDTA + D416 treatment increased the Cd concentration in shoots and decreased the Pb concentration in shoots and roots, but did not change the Zn concentration in S. alfredii plants. Furthermore, EDTA, EDTA + D54 and EDTA + D416 application increased the cysteine and PC contents in S. alfredii (p < 0.05); among all tested PCs, the most abundant species was PC2, and compared with the control, the PC2 content was increased by 371.0%, 1158.6% and 815.6%, respectively. These results will provide some insights into the practical use of EDTA and PGPR in the phytoremediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soil by S. alfredii.

Metal ion binding by humic substances as emergent functions of labile supramolecular assemblies

Environmental contextThe fundamental basis for the high flexibility of humic substances is still unclear, though it is crucial for the understanding of metal bioavailability and toxicity in soil and aqueous environments. We show at the molecular level how characteristics of organic matter affect metal binding depending on the environmental conditions. Such understanding will help in the modulation of metal availability in soil and water in changing environmental situations. AbstractIn this work, we explore the hypothesis that humic substances (HS) can be perceived as labile supramolecular assemblages, the functioning of which is mainly determined by chemical composition and characteristics, the size of molecular units and weak intermolecular forces, rather than the exact primary structure of molecular moieties and their spatial configuration. To test the hypothesis, 72 computational models of three different organic mixtures were composed. The formation of inner and outer sphere metal–ligand complexes, metal binding sites, complex configurations, binding energies and aggregation/dissolution as emergent properties of HS were determined under various conditions. The results of computational modelling revealed that: (i) the highest Cu2+ binding (55.6%) was by the SRFA-22 organic model, which represents low-molecular-weight fulvic acids. In contrast, the highest amount of inner-sphere Mg–organic matter complex (63.4%) was formed in SRHA-6, which has higher-molecular-weight constituents. Therefore, a correlation between the type of cation, the system aromaticity and the extent of metal complexation is proposed. (ii) Increase of metal ion concentration and decrease of water content resulted in an increase in the number of hydrogen bonds and more compact and stable aggregates with lower hydrophilic and higher hydrophobic surface areas in SRFA-22. However, in SRHA-6, the results varied owing to the competition between metal binding, H-bonding and non-polar interactions in the structural arrangement of the aggregates. In general, the aggregation process, driven by metal complexation and water removal, resulted in the formation of more stable conformers, with lower potential energy, with the only exception of SRHA-6–Cu.

Accumulation and bioavailability of heavy metals in an acid soil and their uptake by paddy rice under continuous application of chicken and swine manure

Heavy metal contamination of agricultural soils is a global concern, as it can cause the accumulation of heavy metals in food. In this study, a field experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of the continuous application of chicken or swine manure on the Pb, Cd, Cr and As bioavailability, fractionation, and accumulation in soil and uptake by rice plants. Results showed that chicken or swine manure significantly reduced the Cd and Pb contents in rice grain by 7.8–79.3% and 7.2–59.4%, respectively, with increasing application rates and number of years; the exchangeable Cd and Pb fractions, and the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable Cd and Pb in the soil were also decreased. Furthermore, the application of chicken or swine manure substantially increased the DTPA-extractable As and exchangeable As fractions in the soil but had limited effect on As accumulation in rice grain. No significant differences in the bioavailability in soil nor accumulation in the rice grain were found for Cr between the treatments. Therefore, livestock manure can be used as soil amendments to decrease Cd and Pb accumulation in rice grains, nevertheless, the potential risk of metal accumulation in soils caused by livestock manure application should be considered.

Effects of endophytes inoculation on rhizosphere and endosphere microecology of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) grown in vanadium-contaminated soil and its enhancement on phytoremediation

We investigated the effects of endophytes inoculation on ecological factors such as root morphology, rhizosphere soil properties, heavy metal speciation, and rhizosphere and endophytic bacterial communities and their role on phytoremediation. Indian mustards were grown for two months in V-contaminated soil with three treatments (control, inoculation with Serratia PRE01 or Arthrobacter PRE05). Inoculation with PRE01 and PRE05 increased organic matter content by 6.94% and 4.6% respectively and significantly increased bioavailability of heavy metals in rhizosphere soils. Despite the endophyte inocula failed to flourish as stable endophytes, they significantly affected the specific composition and diversity of endophytic bacterial communities in roots, with no significant effect on rhizosphere bacterial communities. The test strains could greatly increase plant growth promotion-related biomarkers in the endosphere, especially those associated with Pseudomonas and Microbacterium genera. PICRUSt analysis predicted high relative abundances of functional genes related to environmental information processing especially in the endophytic microbiota. More biomass production (12.0%–17.4%) and total metals uptake (24.2%–32.0%) were acquired in inoculated treatments. We conclude that endophyte PRE01 or PRE05 inoculation could effectively enhance phytoremediation of V-contaminated soil by improving the rhizosphere and endosphere microecology without causing any ecological damage.

Biouptake Responses of Trace Metals to Long-Term Irrigation with Diverse Wastewater in the Wheat Rhizosphere Microenvironment.

Wastewater irrigation is widely practiced and may cause serious environmental problems. However, current knowledge on the effects of long-term irrigation with wastewater from different sources on the biouptake of trace metals (TMs) in the rhizosphere zone by plants in farmlands is limited. Here, we analyzed wheat rhizosphere soil and wheat roots collected from a typical wastewater irrigation area in North China to evaluate the influence of wastewater irrigation from different sources on the bioavailability of trace metals in soils. Results showed that irrigation with tanning and domestic wastewater helped enhance the bioavailability of trace metals in rhizosphere soil by increasing the active organic carbon content, soil redox potential, and catalase activity, thus enhancing the proportion of the potentially bioavailable part of trace metal speciation. Conversely, irrigation with pharmaceutical wastewater can reduce the bioavailability of trace metals in rhizosphere soil by increasing total soil antibiotics and thus decreasing the proportions of bioavailable and potentially bioavailable parts of trace metal speciation. These findings can provide insights into the migration and transformation of trace metal speciation in soil rhizosphere microenvironments under the context of wastewater irrigation.

Earthworm activities weaken the immobilizing effect of biochar as amendment for metal polluted soils

The effect of earthworms on the immobilization of heavy metals by biochar was investigated using 4-week soil pot experiments. Our results showed that both sludge and rice husk biochars applied to Cd, Pb and Zn contaminated soils significantly reduced the bioavailability of those heavy metals in soils, and their concentrations in soil pore water. The Cd and Pb concentrations in pakchoi shoots were decreased by 10.8%–11.7% and 21.5%–26.5%, respectively, in biochar treatments alone. Biochar and earthworm treatments, alone or in combination, can significantly increase pakchoi growth. However, compared with biochar-treated alone, applying earthworms into pots with biochar treatments significantly reduced soil pH by 0.1–0.19 units, increased the Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations in soil pore water, their bioavailability and total uptake in shoots. Additionally, earthworms weaken the immobilization effect of biochar on heavy metals. The results of principal component analysis and correlation analysis showed that earthworm treatment was the main cause of soil pH reduction, and soil pH was significantly negatively correlated with the bioavailable Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations in the soil. Furthermore, the effect of the earthworm digestive system (casts) on bioavailable Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations could not explain their changes in the soil. In addition, the application of biochar had no significant effect on the survival and heavy metal enrichment of earthworm. Therefore, the effect of earthworms must be considered in the process of Cd, Pb and Zn contaminated farmland soil remediation using biochar.

The effect of the earthworm Lumbricus rubellus on the bioavailability of cadmium and lead to the springtail Folsomia candida in metal-polluted field soils

The bioavailability of metals can be influenced not only by soil properties but also by other species living at polluted sites. However, in laboratory experiments, usually only one test species is used to estimate bioavailability. In this study, a two-species approach was applied to assess the impact of the earthworm Lumbricus rubellus on the bioavailability of cadmium and lead to the springtail Folsomia candida using natural soils from a gradient of metal pollution. Earthworms were kept in half of the soil replicates for 4 weeks. Subsequently, the uptake and elimination kinetics of cadmium and lead in F. candida exposed for 21 days to the soils was determined. Earthworm activity affected soil properties but did not significantly affect metal uptake rate constants in springtails. The slightly higher uptake due to the presence of earthworms, which was consistent in all tested soils and for both metals, suggests that further research is needed on the role of species interactions in affecting metal bioavailability in soil.

Model construction for estimating potential vulnerability of Japanese soils to cadmium pollution based on intact soil properties.

Prediction of heavy metal bioavailability in intact soil is important to manage soil pollution risks. We developed a regression model for representative Japanese soils to judge their potential vulnerability to cadmium (Cd) pollution. We added four rates of Cd to 17 sample soils to mimic artificial contamination. After aging the contaminated soils, we measured Cd’s bioavailability using the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique. We then evaluated the relationships between bioavailability of Cd ([CdDGT]) and intact soil properties by statistical analyses. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) and pH emerged as significant factors to explain the cadmium bioavailability in Japanese soils. Specifically, lower CEC and lower pH were associated with higher [CdDGT], which poses a higher risk for soil ecosystems. The correlation between pH and [CdDGT] had a high dependence on [CdAdd], whereas that for CEC did not. Regression analysis also showed that the interaction between intact soil pH and spiked concentration ([CdAdd]) had a significant contribution to [CdDGT]. The regression model developed was rationally supported by a biotic ligand model. This simplified but realistic model would be useful in estimating the vulnerability of representative Japanese soils and determining the risk for Japanese soils in relation to Cd contamination.

Impact of poplar-based phytomanagement on metal bioavailability in low-phosphorus calcareous soil with multi-metal contamination

Bioavailability of trace metals (TMs) is the key component in the management of TM-contaminated soils; however, its impact mechanism is unclear in low-phosphorus (P) calcareous soils afforested by fast-growing tree species for a long duration (>10 years). We selected a site contaminated with multiple TMs and phytomanaged by poplar (Populus hopeiensis Hu & Chow) to study the impact mechanism of plant–soil interactions on TM bioavailability along a long-term chronosequence (i.e., 10, 15, 20, and 25 years). We found that phytomanagement significantly decreased soil organic carbon (SOC) content, soil total nitrogen (N) content, and soil C/P and N/P ratios with stand age, but did not significantly change soil total P content. In contrast, soil available P content significantly changed in rhizospheric soils compared with the bulk soil, suggesting the tight coupling between the amplification of P turnover and N availability. Soil pH in rhizospheric soils significantly decreased by 0.22 to 0.32 units, while calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content decreased by 14% to 39%, as compared with the bulk soil. Bioavailable concentrations of cadmium, lead, and zinc were positively correlated with soil available P, whereas bioavailable nickel concentration was negatively correlated with soil pH. Furthermore, TM bioavailability in rhizospheric soils significantly increased with stand age, regardless of the metal type. Our results suggest that P mobilization associated with SOC depletion induced soil acidification followed by CaCO3 dissolution, collectively leading to metal mobilization with stand age.

Fly ash and zeolite decrease metal uptake but do not improve rice growth in paddy soils contaminated with Cu and Zn

Fly ash (FA) and zeolite (Z) are known to reduce bioavailability of metals in soils via immobilization; however, these amendments may not only immobilize metals such as copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), but also reduce nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability in the soils via sorption (for N by Z) and precipitation (for P by FA). This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of application of FA and Z (0, 5, and 10% rate) on the availability of nutrients as well as metals in the metal-contaminated soils cultivated with paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.). Both FA and Z reduced Cu and Zn uptake by rice while increasing metal retention in the soils regardless of the application rates. However, reduced uptake of metals did not translate into increase in rice growth, especially at the 10% of amendment rates, due to decreased nutrient uptake as indicated by higher NH4+ and available P concentration in the soils amended with Z and FA, respectively, which inhibited tillering in the early rice growth period and thus reduced biomass accumulation at maturity. Our results suggest that FA and Z may reduce Cu and Zn uptake by rice in the soils contaminated with the metals; however, the availability of N and P is likely to be co-decreased. We suggest that the capacities of FA and Z to immobilize nutrients as well as metals need to be considered prior to using the amendments in metal-contaminated rice paddies.

Review: mine tailings in an African tropical environment-mechanisms for the bioavailability of heavy metals in soils.

Heavy metals are of environmental significance due to their effect on human health and the ecosystem. One of the major exposure pathways of Heavy metals for humans is through food crops. It is postulated in the literature that when crops are grown in soils which have excessive concentrations of heavy metals, they may absorb elevated levels of these elements thereby endangering consumers. However, due to land scarcity, especially in urban areas of Africa, potentially contaminated land around industrial dumps such as tailings is cultivated with food crops. The lack of regulation for land-usage on or near to mine tailings has not helped this situation. Moreover, most countries in tropical Africa have not defined guideline values for heavy metals in soils for various land uses, and even where such limits exist, they are based on total soil concentrations. However, the risk of uptake of heavy metals by crops or any soil organisms is determined by the bioavailable portion and not the total soil concentration. Therefore, defining bioavailable levels of heavy metals becomes very important in HM risk assessment, but methods used must be specific for particular soil types depending on the dominant sorption phases. Geochemical speciation modelling has proved to be a valuable tool in risk assessment of heavy metal-contaminated soils. Among the notable ones is WHAM (Windermere Humic Aqueous Model). But just like most other geochemical models, it was developed and adapted on temperate soils, and because major controlling variables in soils such as SOM, temperature, redox potential and mineralogy differ between temperate and tropical soils, its predictions on tropical soils may be poor. Validation and adaptation of such models for tropical soils are thus imperative before such they can be used. The latest versions (VI and VII) of WHAM are among the few that consider binding to all major binding phases. WHAM VI and VII are assemblages of three sub-models which describe binding to organic matter, (hydr)oxides of Fe, Al and Mn and clays. They predict free ion concentration, total dissolved ion concentration and organic and inorganic metal ion complexes, in soils, which are all important components for bioavailability and leaching to groundwater ways. Both WHAM VI and VII have been applied in a good number of soils studies with reported promising results. However, all these studies have been on temperate soils and have not been tried on any typical tropical soils. Nonetheless, since WHAM VII considers binding to all major binding phases, including those which are dominant in tropical soils, it would be a valuable tool in risk assessment of heavy metals in tropical soils. A discussion of the contamination of soils with heavy metals, their subsequent bioavailability to crops that are grown in these soils and the methods used to determine various bioavailable phases of heavy metals are presented in this review, with an emphasis on prospective modelling techniques for tropical soils.
