Size-dependent vector effect of microplastics on the bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls in tilapia: A tissue-specific study

Microplastics play a significant role in interactions between organisms and hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), leading to a joint toxic effect on aquatic organisms. This study extensively investigated the tissue-specific accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) resulting from different sized microplastics in tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) using a passive dosing device. Based on biological feeding behavior considerations, 1 mm and 2 μm polystyrene (PS) microplastics with concentrations of 2 and 5 mg L−1 were investigated. A physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model was applied to evaluate the exchange kinetics and fluxes among the tissues. Moreover, an in vitro simulation experiment was conducted to theoretically validate the vector effect. The findings demonstrated that the effects caused by HOCs and microplastics on organisms were influenced by multiple factors such as size and surface properties. The mass transfer kinetics of HOCs in specific tissues were closely related to their adsorption capacity and position microplastics could reach. Specifically, although 2 μm microplastics exhibited high adsorption capacity for PCBs, they were only retained in the intestines and did not significantly contribute to the bioaccumulation of PCBs in gills or muscle. While 1 mm microplastics were ingested but just paused in the mouth and subsequently flew through the gills with oral mucus. Their vector effects increased the desorption of microplastic-bound PCB-118 in the gill mucus microcosm, thereby facilitating the mass transfer and accumulation of PCB-118 in gills and muscle. This study sheds new light on how the size-dependent vector generated by microplastics affects the tissue-specific accumulation of HOCs in aquatic organisms.

Quantitative thermodynamic exposure assessment of PCBs available to sandworms (Alitta virens) in activated carbon remediated sediment during ongoing sediment deposition.

Marine mesoscale studies with sandworms (Alitta virens) were conducted to isolate important processes governing the exposure and bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at contaminated sediment sites. Ex situ equilibrium sampling with silicone-coated jars, and in situ passive sampling with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were used to determine the performance of an activated carbon (AC) amendment remedy applied to the bed sediment. A quantitative thermodynamic exposure assessment ('QTEA') was performed, showing that PCB concentrations in polymers at equilibrium with the surficial sediment were suited to measure and assess the remedy effectiveness with regard to PCB bioaccumulation in worms. In practice, monitoring the performance of sediment remedies should utilize a consistent and predictive form of polymeric sampling of the sediment. The present study found that ex situ equilibrium sampling of the surficial sediment was the most useful for understanding changes in bioaccumulation potential as a result of the applied remedy, during bioturbation and ongoing sediment and contaminant influx processes. The ultrathin silicone coatings of the ex situ sampling provided fast equilibration of PCBs between the sediment interstitial water and the polymer, and the multiple coating thicknesses were applied to confirm equilibrium and the absence of surface sorption artifacts. Overall, ex situ equilibrium sampling of surficial sediment could fit into existing frameworks as a robust and cost-effective tool for contaminated sediment site assessment.

First evidence of legacy chlorinated POPs bioaccumulation in Antarctic sponges from the Ross sea and the South Shetland Islands

Antarctica is no longer pristine due to the confirmed presence of anthropogenic contaminants like Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Benthic organisms are poorly represented in contamination studies in Antarctica although they are known to bioaccumulate contaminants. Sponges (Phylum Porifera) are dominant members in Antarctic benthos, both in terms of abundance and biomass, and are an important feeding source for other organisms, playing key functional roles in benthic communities. To the best of our knowledge, legacy chlorinated POPs such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and their metabolites have never been investigated in this Phylum in Antarctica. The aim of this work was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of PCBs, HCB, o,p’- and p,p’-DDT and their DDE and DDD isomers in 35 sponge samples, belonging to 17 different species, collected along the coast of Terra Nova Bay (Adèlie Cove and Tethys Bay, Ross Sea), and at Whalers Bay (Deception Island, South Shetland Islands) in Antarctica. Lipid content showed a significant correlation with the three pollutant classes. The overall observed pattern in the three study sites was ΣPCBs>ΣDDTs>HCB and it was found in almost every species. The ΣPCBs, ΣDDTs, and HCB ranged from 54.2 to 133.7 ng/g lipid weight (lw), from 17.5 to 38.6 ng/g lw and from 4.8 to 8.5 ng/g lw, respectively. Sponges showed contamination levels comparable to other Antarctic benthic organisms from previous studies. The comparison among sponges of the same species from different sites showed diverse patterns for PCBs only in one out of four cases. The concentration of POPs did not vary significantly among the three sites. The predominance of lower chlorinated organochlorines in the samples suggested that long-range atmospheric transportation (LRAT) could be the major driver of contamination as molecules with a high long range transport potential (e.g. low chlorinated PCBs, HCB) prevails on heavier ones.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis): Biomonitoring and Potential Human Health Effects.

Organochloride (OC) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were determined in the muscle tissue of fifty sardine samples (Sardinella brasiliensis) sampled off the south-east Brazilian shelf. The aim herein was to investigate OCs and PCBs composition profile, bioaccumulation potential and human risks. The concentrations of 18 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were below the method limit of quantification in most samples (ca. 94%), with few detected, namely δ-HCH, γ-HCH, Endosulfan I and II, Endosulfan Sulphate, DDE, Dieldrin, Endrin, Endrin Aldeide, Endrin Cetone and Metoxyclor. The median concentration for the Σ41 PCBs was 2.32 ng g-1, ranging from values below the limit of quantification (<LOQ) to 37.2 ng g-1. Based on the analyzed samples, the concentrations reported herein do not represent a risk for human consumption according to both national and international guidelines, nor do OC and PCB bioaccumulation in sardines appear to be a concern at the moment. These findings, although preliminary, represent a baseline for future comparisons of the quality of an important source of protein available to the poorest Brazilian population strata.

Myco- and phyco-remediation of polychlorinated biphenyls in the environment: a review.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic organic compounds and pose serious threats to environment and public health. PCBs still exist in different environments such as air, water, soil, and sediments even on ban. This review summarizes the phyco- and myco-remediation technologies developed to detoxify the PCB-polluted sites. It was found that algae mostly use bioaccumulation to biodegradation strategies to reclaim the environment. As bio-accumulator, Ulva rigida C. Agardh has been best at 25ng/g dry wt to remove PCBs. Evidently, Anabaena PD-1 is the only known PCB degrading alga and efficiently degrade Aroclor 1254 and dioxin-like PCBs up to 84.4% and 37.4% to 68.4%, respectively. The review suggested that factors such as choice of algal strains, response of microalgae, biomass, the rate of growth, and cost-effective cultivation conditions significantly influence the remediation of PCBs. Furthermore, the Anabaena sp. linA gene of Pseudomonas paucimobilis Holmes UT26 showed enhanced efficiency. Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.) P. Kumm is the most efficient PCB degrading fungus, degrading up to 98.4% and 99.6% of PCB in complex and mineral media, respectively. Combine metabolic activities of bacteria and yeast led to the higher detoxification of PCBs. Fungi-algae consortia would be a promising approach in remediation of PCBs. A critical analysis on potentials and limits of PCB treatment through fungal and algal biosystems have been reviewed, and thus, new insights have emerged for possible bioremediation, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation of PCBs.

Bioresponses of earthworm-microbiota symbionts to polychlorinated biphenyls in the presence of nano zero valent iron in soil

Both earthworms and nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) have been recently regarded as important approaches for in-situ remediation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil. However, the combined action of earthworms and nZVI toward PCBs, and the biological responses of earthworm-microbiota symbionts to nZVI-PCBs co-exposure in soil remediation systems remain unclear. In this study, a 28-d exposure with different levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and nZVI was applied to earthworm Eisenia fetida in an agricultural soil. Both physiological responses of earthworms and their surrounding microbiota in gut and soil were examined. Kinetic modelling parameters showed a doubled PCB accumulation in earthworms with the presence of nZVI. Meanwhile, nZVI-PCBs coexposure synergistically stimulated the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), along with the elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) in earthworms. Based on integrated metabolomic and 16S rRNA analysis, it was found that earthworms provided certain metabolites, e.g., S-(2-hydroxyethyl)glutathione, 16-hydroxypalmitic acid, and formamide, beneficial to PCB-degrading microbiota (Novosphingobium and Achromobacter) in the intestine. Our findings of nZVI-enhanced PCB bioaccumulation and the defense mechanism afforded by the earthworm-microbiota symbionts toward PCB-nZVI exposure show the promise of combining earthworms with nZVI for the remediation of PCBs-contaminated soil.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in the Environment: Occupational and Exposure Events, Effects on Human Health and Fertility

In the last decade or so, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) garnered renewed attention in the scientific community due to new evidence pointing at their continued presence in the environment and workplaces and the potential human risks related to their presence. PCBs move from the environment to humans through different routes; the dominant pathway is the ingestion of contaminated foods (fish, seafood and dairy products), followed by inhalation (both indoor and outdoor air), and, to a lesser extent, dust ingestion and dermal contact. Numerous studies reported the environmental and occupational exposure to these pollutants, deriving from building materials (flame-retardants, plasticizers, paints, caulking compounds, sealants, fluorescent light ballasts, etc.) and electrical equipment. The highest PCBs contaminations were detected in e-waste recycling sites, suggesting the need for the implementation of remediation strategies of such polluted areas to safeguard the health of workers and local populations. Furthermore, a significant correlation between PCB exposure and increased blood PCB concentrations was observed in people working in PCB-contaminated workplaces. Several epidemiological studies suggest that environmental and occupational exposure to high concentrations of PCBs is associated with different health outcomes, such as neuropsychological and neurobehavioral deficits, dementia, immune system dysfunctions, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. In addition, recent studies indicate that PCBs bioaccumulation can reduce fertility, with harmful effects on the reproductive system that can be passed to offspring. In the near future, further studies are needed to assess the real effects of PCBs exposure at low concentrations for prolonged exposure in workplaces and specific indoor environments.

Variation in natural attenuation rates of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in fish from streams and reservoirs in East Tennessee observed over a 35-year period

Environmental contamination due to human activities is a major concern, particularly for persistent chemicals. Within catchments, persistent chemicals linked to negative health outcomes such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have great potential to be transported, through adsorption or biological uptake, with downstream locations acting as sinks for accumulation. Here we present long-term trends in PCB bioaccumulation in fish found in lower-order tributaries on the Oak Ridge Reservation, an impacted US Department of Energy property in East Tennessee, USA, and a large reservoir system adjacent to it composed of parts of the Clinch and Tennessee Rivers. Given that the reservoir system has experienced no direct PCB mitigation activities, this record offers an opportunity to explore potential natural attenuation of PCBs within a large lotic ecosystem. Attenuation rates ranged from 0% to 8% yr-1 in minnows and sunfish at stream sites and 5.4–11.3% yr-1 in catfish at reservoir sites. These rates are comparable to findings from similar studies in other regions, suggesting a consistency in responses since the banning of PCB production in 1979. Further, results suggest that PCB sources from discharge outfalls are important locally but are not primarily responsible for sustaining PCB contamination in downstream reservoirs.

Bioaccumulation of PCBs, HCB and PAHs in the summer plankton from West Spitsbergen fjords

Concentrations of seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and twelve polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were examined in plankton collected in summer from different Arctic fjords (Hornsund, Kongsfjorden, Adventfjorden). The levels of all target contaminants in arctic protists have been analyzed for the first time. This is also the first report on PAH levels in arctic fjords zooplankton. ∑7 PCB, HCB and ∑12 PAH concentrations were up to 3.58 ng/g w.w., 0.28 ng/g w.w. and 249 ng/g w.w., respectively. Among the zooplankton species, the highest concentrations of the most analyzed contaminants were detected in Themisto abyssorum. This could be explained by the predatory feeding strategy of this species. The importance of diet was confirmed by the low concentrations of contaminants detected in the herbivorous copepod Calanus spp. Depending on contaminant, bioaccumulation occurred in 50 to 100% studied cases. Studies have shown significant biomagnification of PCBs and PAHs in zooplankton predator-prey pairs.

Concentrations and Human Health Risk of Organochlorines in Farmed Freshwater Products: Fish Ponds around Changsha, China

The present study was conducted to reveal the concentrations and patterns of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in seven species of freshwater food products (Procambarus clarkii, Ctenopharyngodon idellus, Parabramis pekinensis, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Cyprinus carpio, Aristichthys nobilis, and Carassius auratus) collected from aquaculture farms around Changsha, People's Republic of China. The OCPs and PCBs in the muscle tissue of these species were analyzed to assess the health risk associated with dietary intake. The mean concentrations of OCPs and PCBs were 6.38 to 15.90 and 3.18 to 5.12 ng g-1 wet weight, respectively. Heptachlor and δ-HCH were the main OCP contaminants in the tested samples, accounting for >74% of the total OCPs. PCB52 was the main PCB, accounting for >88% of the total PCBs. The bioaccumulation of OCPs and PCBs in these aquatic products depends upon the species. C. idellus had the highest concentrations of OCPs, and H. molitrix had the highest concentrations of PCBs. The mean lipid concentration in these freshwater species was 6.08 to 19.8% (dry weight) and was significantly correlated with the concentrations of OCPs and PCBs. The health risk from consumption of these freshwater species was assessed based on the hazard ratios and hazard quotient, and consumption of these products was determined to pose a carcinogenic risk.

Effects of microplastics and food particles on organic pollutants bioaccumulation in equi-fugacity and above-fugacity scenarios

Microplastics (MPs), as emerging contaminants, sorb organic pollutants from the environment or leach out additives, thereby altering the fate of co-existing pollutants to organisms. We chose equi-fugacity and above-fugacity concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as background contamination and plastic additive concentrations, respectively, to investigate the effects of MPs on PCB bioaccumulation; we compared the effects of MPs with those of food-borne particles (FBPs). Co-exposure to MPs and FBPs at both the equi-fugacity and above-fugacity PCB concentrations had no obvious toxic effects (ROS generation and cyp1a expression) on zebrafish. When the zebrafish were exposed to the equi-fugacity PCB concentrations, the PCB concentrations reached 177.7–400.5 ng/g after a 7-d uptake; the presence of MPs did not significantly enhance PCB bioaccumulation. The remaining PCB concentrations in the fish after a 4-d depuration were 58.4–125.1 ng/g; the effects of MPs were the same as those during the uptake period. However, at the above-fugacity PCB concentrations, the MPs markedly increased the PCB bioaccumulation (by 1.8–fold) to 712.9 ng/g. This is because at above-fugacity concentrations, PCBs on MPs migrate to organisms as there were high fugacity gradients. The FBPs enhanced PCB bioaccumulation in zebrafish more effectively than the MPs, even after depuration. In the presence of FBPs, PCB bioaccumulation increased by 2.8- and 4.2- fold after uptake in the equi-fugacity and above-fugacity scenarios, respectively, both of which were significantly higher than that observed for the MPs. This is probably because FBPs are easily assimilated by fish, making the associated PCBs more bioavailable. Finally, during the co-existence of MPs and FBPs, MPs facilitate the depuration of PCBs accumulated via FBP vectors; conversely, FBPs did not affect PCB accumulation via MP vectors. Thus, this study elucidated the effects of MPs and FBPs on the bioaccumulation of pollutants at equi-fugacity or above-fugacity concentrations in aquatic environments.

Effect of Activated Carbon in Thin Sand Caps Challenged with Ongoing PCB Inputs from Sediment Deposition: PCB Uptake in Clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) and Passive Samplers.

Ongoing inputs, in the form of sediment deposition along with associated dissolved contaminants, have challenged the assessment of cap performance at contaminated sediment sites. To address this issue, thin 2-3cm layer sand caps amended with activated carbon (AC) were investigated for the remediation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contaminated marine sediments using 90-day mesocosms. All treatments were challenged with (1) ongoing clean or marker-PCB-spiked sediment inputs and (2) bioturbation. Bioaccumulation in hard clams (filter feeding near the cap-water interface) was evaluated to best understand cap effectiveness, relative to sheepshead minnows (confined to the surface water) and sandworms (which burrowed through the caps). All caps (sand and AC amended sand) provided isolation of native bedded PCBs (i.e., PCBs sourced from the bed), reducing uptake in organisms. Total PCB bioaccumulation in clams indicated that AC addition to the cap provided no benefit with spiked influx, or some benefit (56% reduction) with clean influx. Spiked input PCBs, when added to the depositional input sediment, were consistently detected in clams and passive samplers, with and without AC in the cap. PCB uptake by passive samplers located in the caps did not reflect the performance of the remedy, as defined by clam bioaccumulation. However, PCB uptake by passive samplers in the overlying water reasonably represented clam bioaccumulation results.

Hazardous pollutants in the environment: Fish host-parasite interactions and bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls

The present paper reports on the interrelationships of fish, parasites and the bioaccumulation of hazardous organic compounds in the Zemplínska Šírava water reservoir in eastern Slovakia, which is heavily polluted with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The concentrations of these contaminants were measured in various fish matrices (dorsal and abdominal muscle tissues, hepatopancreas, intestine wall and adipose tissue) of the freshwater bream, Abramis brama (Cyprinidae), and in its intestinal parasite Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Cestoda), which was used for the first time as a model for a PCB bioaccumulation study. Regarding the fish, the highest concentrations of PCBs were found in the intestine, followed by hepatopancreas and muscle tissues. The amounts of PCBs were higher in abdominal muscles than in their dorsal parts. Concentrations of ∑PCBs above the limits set by European regulations were detected in both muscle parts in the fish, confirming the persistent unfavorable conditions in this locality and high risk for biota and humans. Based on bioconcentration factor values (BCFs), PCBs reached much higher levels in cestodes compared to bream matrices. Some significant differences in PCB amounts between infected and uninfected bream were determined. Fulton's condition factor (CF) significantly differed in infected and non-infected fish (p ˂ 0.05), with CF values surprisingly lower in fish free of parasites compared to parasitized fish, which suggests a “mutualistic” relationship between the parasite and its host.

Impact of sociodemographic profile, generation and bioaccumulation on lifetime dietary and internal exposures to PCBs

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants triggering numerous adverse effects. Because they are present in various food, dietary exposure of the population to these contaminants must be estimated to assess the related health risk. However, the classical risk assessment approach allows only short-term estimates of exposure and does not account for dietary changes, evolution of food contaminations and bioaccumulation of PCBs through life. The approach presented here assesses lifetime PCB exposure trajectories according to birth year and individual sociodemographic profiles. Moreover, a physiologically based toxicokinetic model was developed to simulate lifetime PCB plasma concentrations, while considering physiological changes with age. A focus on the long-term impact of breastfeeding is also presented in order to consider the risk related to PCBs and due to the mother-to-child transfer. For example, the exposure of an individual born in 1972 exceeds the critical value of 20 ng PCB/kg bw/day half as often as an individual born in 1932 throughout their lifetime but 13 times more often than an individual born in 2012, according to our simulations. In addition, even if breastfeeding clearly leads to much higher dietary exposures than formula feeding, the long-term impact on PCB body burden remains negligible. Risk assessment related to PCB lifetime trajectories is described and discussed.

Mussels drive polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) biomagnification in a coastal food web

Despite international regulation, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are routinely detected at levels threatening human and environmental health. While previous research has emphasized trophic transfer as the principle pathway for PCB accumulation, our study reveals the critical role that non-trophic interactions can play in controlling PCB bioavailability and biomagnification. In a 5-month field experiment manipulating saltmarsh macro-invertebrates, we show that suspension-feeding mussels increase concentrations of total PCBs and toxic dioxin-like coplanars by 11- and 7.5-fold in sediment and 10.5- and 9-fold in cordgrass-grazing crabs relative to no-mussel controls, but do not affect PCB bioaccumulation in algae-grazing crabs. PCB homolog composition and corroborative dietary analyses demonstrate that mussels, as ecosystem engineers, amplify sediment contamination and PCB exposure for this burrowing marsh crab through non-trophic mechanisms. We conclude that these ecosystem engineering activities and other non-trophic interactions may have cascading effects on trophic biomagnification pathways, and therefore exert strong bottom-up control on PCB biomagnification up this coastal food web.

Alternative Evaluation to Earthworm Toxicity Test in Polychlorinated Biphenyls Spiked and Remediated Soils

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants that pose a threat to environment and human health. Aiming at predicting PCBs risk in actual soil ecosystem, this study was conducted by chemical and biological methods to assess the bioavailability of PCBs in spiked soil, and in field-contaminated soils before or after remediation. The three chemical methods were Soxhlet, n-butanol and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD). Results were compared to actual PCB bioaccumulation in earthworms (Eisenia fetida). HPCD extraction was the best to predict the actual PCB bioaccumulation in all soils. The results suggest that HPCD could be an effective alternative method to earthworm toxicity test. This study provides strategy to understand the toxicity assessment in contaminated soil and soil after remediation.

Bioaccumulation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in Fish Host-Parasite Bentho-Pelagic Food Chain in Epe Lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria.

This paper investigates the concentrations of PCBs in the water and sediment media and its bio-concentration in the fish host-parasite bentho-pelagic food chain in Epe lagoon. Samples of water, sediment, plankton, mollusks, fish and intestinal helminth parasites were collected from three stations (Oriba, Imode and Ikosi) in Epe Lagoon. Concentration of total PCBs in the surface water and sediment across the stations ranges from 3.20 to 6.00 ppb and 405.50-860.70 ppb respectively. Imode had the highest concentrations. The plankton bio-concentrates most PCBs in Ikosi (286.70 ppb) followed by Imode concentration (165.40 ppb), then Oribo (92.60 ppb) with total bio-concentration of 544.60 ppb. Surface water temperature negatively and strongly correlates with PCBs in the plankton. The planktons bio-concentrates total PCBs 44 times than that in the surface water. Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus bio-concentrates total PCBs 48 times than that in the surface water. Bioaccumulation of PCBs in human food chain could pose health risk.

Residual characteristics and potential health risk assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in seafood and surface sediments from Xiangshan Bay, China (2011–2016)

Xiangshan Bay provides most of the seafood for residents from the southeast coast of China. However, information on the safety of local seafood was not well known. In this study, we investigated the residue, spatial distribution and potential health risks of ten polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in seafood and surface sediment samples during six years (2011–2016). The results indicated the level of PCBs in 9 types of seafood from Xiangshan Bay ranged between ND and 25.3 ng·g−1. The highest average concentration of PCBs (14.2 ng·g−1) was observed in Ostreidae. The average PCB concentrations in the surface sediments was 1.58 ng·g−1 (ND to 15.2 ng·g−1). The biota-sediment accumulation factors of the PCBs in most seafood indicated that the seafood was readily subjected to the bioaccumulation of PCBs from sediments. The carcinogenic risks were all within the safe ranges of 9 types of seafood for adults.

Chlorinated organic contaminants in fish from the South China Sea: Assessing risk to Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin

Indo-Pacific humpback (Sousa chinensis) dolphins are primarily exposed to chlorinated organic contaminants through the consumption of contaminated fish. We assessed the potential risk of chlorinated organic contaminants to Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins by determining the concentration of 21 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 28 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in 14 fish species collected from the South China Sea coastal waters. The results of the study showed that bioaccumulation of OCPs and PCBs was influenced by sampling location, fish species, and fish niche. The average ∑DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) concentration was 3 times higher in benthopelagic fish (488 ng/g) compared to pelagic-neritic fish (155 ng/g) from Jiangmen, whereas an opposite pattern of the lower DDTs concentration in benthopelagic and demersal fish compared to pelagic fish from Zhuhai (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the molecular diagnostic ratios using DDT and its metabolites (DDT/(DDD + DDE) were less than one, suggesting the DDT contamination at Zhuhai and Jiangmen may due to the historical agricultural usage of the lands. The reference dose-based (RfD) risk quotient (RQ) suggested that DDTs are potential risk in Qinzhou, which is in accordance with the high DDTs concentration found in fishes captured in Qinzhou. The RfD risk quotient of PCBs is at potential risk for all sites (RQ > 100), except Xiamen and Qinzhou. A highest average ∑DDT concentration was observed Qinzhou. This study showed that fish consumption might pose a health risk to Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins. However, further studies are required to determine the contribution of fish niche to the overall risk.

Organ-specific bioaccumulation of PCBs and PAHs in African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) from the Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa.

The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the muscle, liver, spleen and kidney tissue of two fish species was studied using an optimised diatomaceous earth assisted modified QuEChERS extraction method. Five-year-old free-ranging male African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and 5-year-old male common carp (Cyprinus carpio) sampled from the Hartbeespoort Dam in South Africa were used for method development. Acetonitrile extraction produced more precise recoveries than hexane extraction. Fluorene and naphthalene were the most abundant PAHs detected in the majority of fish tissues analysed. PAH bioaccumulation in 5-year-old carp and 5-year-old catfish was in the order muscle > kidney > liver > spleen and liver > muscle > kidney > spleen, respectively. PCBs were mostly detected in carp spleen and kidney. Two-year-old carp were analysed to determine PCB and PAH bioaccumulation trends. The differences in ∑16PAH concentrations between the four organs tested were all statistically insignificant for the 3 fish tested (p > 0.05). All other organs with the exception of 5-year-old carp spleen and 5-year-old carp kidney recorded total 31 PCB concentrations (∑31PCB) < 25ngg-1. Only 5-year-old carp spleen (∑31PCB of 592ngg-1) and 5-year-old carp kidney (∑31PCB of 561ngg-1) had significant differences (p < 0.05) from the spleen and kidney in 5-year-old catfish and 2-year-old carp. Whilst the carp and catfish sampled can be considered low PCB risk foods, 5-year-old carp muscle can be considered to be a high PAH risk food, with a benzo(a)pyrene concentration of 7μgg-1, based on the EU Commission Regulation 2005/208/EC pertaining to the maximum permissible benzo(a)pyrene level in fresh fish muscle.
