Selenium bioaccumulation in Daphnia pulexvia aqueous and dietary exposure.

Pit lakes are currently being investigated as a way to store and reclaim waste materials in the Alberta Oil Sands (AOS) region, Canada. Lake Miwasin (LM) is a pilot-scale pit lake consisting of treated fine tailings overlayed with oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) blended with fresh surface water. In October 2021, the surface water contained a mean concentration of 1.33 ± 0.04µg/L dissolved selenium (Se), slightly above the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment water quality guideline for long-term protection of aquatic life (1µg Se/L). This study assessed the bioaccumulation of Se by the cladoceran Daphnia pulex under laboratory conditions through both aqueous and dietary exposure routes for comparison to field-collected specimens. In 12-day semi-static tests, lab-cultured D.pulex were exposed to water, and algae grown in media spiked with selenate. Results showed that Se bioaccumulation by lab-cultured D. pulex increased in all exposure treatments from days 5 to 12, with maximum Se concentrations of 3.08-3.47µg/g dry weight (dw) observed within the exposure range tested. Interestingly, lower Se bioaccumulation concentrations (1.26-1.58µg/g dw) were observed in the highest dissolved Se and dietary Se treatments, suggesting potential internal regulatory mechanisms. In addition, native D. pulex (LM) collected from Lake Miwasin and cultured in-house were exposed in 8-day semi-static tests to Lake Miwasin surface water and algae cultured in Lake Miwasin surface water. Selenium bioaccumulation in native D. pulex (LM) ranged from 2.00 to 2.04µg/g dw at day 8 and was not significantly different (p > 0.05) compared to Se concentrations in D. pulex collected from Lake Miwasin (2.15 ± 0.28µg/g) in summer 2022.

Application potential of Vaccinium ashei R. for cadmium migration retention in the mining area soil

Despite numerous reports on phytoremediation of heavy metals contaminated soil, there are few reports on plant retention of heavy metals in the mining area slope. This study was the first of its kind to explore the cadmium (Cd) retention capacity of the blueberry (Vaccinium ashei Reade). Firstly, we investigated the stress response of blueberry to different soil Cd concentrations (1, 5, 10, 15, 20 mg/kg) to assess its potential for phytoremediation by pot experiments. The results showed that the blueberry biomass exposed to 10 and 15 mg/kg Cd was significantly increased compared with the control (1 mg/kg Cd); the blueberry crown increased by 0.40% and 0.34% in 10 and 15 mg/kg Cd-contaminated soil, respectively, compared with control; the blueberry heigh did not even change significantly in each treatment group; the total chlorophyll content, peroxidase and catalase activity of blueberry were enhanced in 5–20 mg/kg Cd treatments. Furthermore, the Cd contents of blueberry in the root, stem and leaf increased significantly as the Cd concentration of soil increased. We found that more Cd accumulated in blueberry root: the bioaccumulation concentration factor was root > stem > leaf for all groups; the residual-Cd (Cd speciation) in soil increased by 3.83%–411.11% in blueberry-planted versus unplanted groups; blueberry improved the Cd-contaminated soil micro-ecological environment including soil organic matter, available K and P, as well as microbial communities. Then, to investigate the effect of blueberry cultivation on Cd migration, we developed a bioretention model and revealed that soil Cd transport along the model slope was significantly weakened by blueberry cultivation, especially at the bottom of the model. In a word, this research suggests a promising method for the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil and the reduction of Cd migration in mining areas.

Histopathological and health risk assessment of heavy metals in the straw-colored fruit bat, Eidolon helvum, in Nigeria.

There is heightening concern regarding heavy metals environmental pollution requiring renewed global attention because of their bioaccumulation and toxicity at varying levels. The concern is most important in the highly migratory Eidolon helvum (E. helvum) that is very common and traverses wide geographical areas within the sub-Saharan Africa. The present study aimed to evaluate levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) bioaccumulation in 24 E. helvum of both sexes from Nigeria to assess their indirect health risks to the human consumers of the bats in addition to their direct bioaccumulation and toxic damages in the bats themselves based on standard procedures. Lead, Zn, and Cd bioaccumulation concentrations were 2.83 ± 0.35, 0.42 ± 0.03, and 0.05 ± 0.01mg/kg, respectively, with significant (p < 0.05) Pb bioaccumulation compared to either Cd or Zn in the affected bats. However, only Pb (markedly) and Cd (marginally) bioaccumulated above small mammals' critical threshold levels as there are no existing established threshold levels for bats. Sex played no major role in their bioaccumulation levels. The bioaccumulation levels posed no life-long non-carcinogenic nor carcinogenic risks to the human consumers of the bats at detected concentrations. The observed lungs, liver, and kidney histopathological changes suggested the possible direct effects of the metals in the bats. Nevertheless, other anthropogenic factors might be responsible as no significant (p > 0.05) correlation existed between cellular changes and the bioaccumulation levels. The presence of the heavy metals and their bioaccumulations above critical threshold levels suggested some levels of environmental contamination and pollution, which might have direct and indirect health implications to the bats and their human consumers.

Comparing Equilibrium Concentrations of Polychlorinated Biphenyls Based on Passive Sampling and Bioaccumulation in Water Column Deployments.

Biomonitoring at contaminated sites undergoing cleanup, including Superfund sites, often uses bioaccumulation of anthropogenic contaminants by field-deployed organisms as a metric of remedial effectiveness. Bioaccumulation studies are unable to assess the equilibrium status of the organisms relative to the contaminants to which they are exposed. Establishing equilibrium provides a reproducible benchmark on which scientific and management decisions can be based (e.g., comparison with human dietary consumption criteria). Unlike bioaccumulating organisms, passive samplers can be assessed for their equilibrium status. In our study, over a 3-year period, we compared the bioaccumulation of selected polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by mussels in water column deployments at the New Bedford Harbor Superfund site (New Bedford, MA, USA) to codeployed passive samplers. Based on comparisons to the calculated passive sampler equilibrium concentrations, the mussels were not at equilibrium, and the subsequent analysis focused on evaluating approaches for estimating equilibrium bioaccumulation. In addition, a limited evaluation of metal bioaccumulation by the exposed mussels and a metal passive sampler was performed. In general, mussel and passive sampler accumulation of PCBs was significantly correlated; however, surprisingly, agreement on the magnitude of accumulation was optimal when bioaccumulation and passive sampler uptake were not corrected for nonequilibrium conditions. A subsequent comparison of four approaches for estimating equilibrium mussel bioaccumulation using octanol-water partition coefficients (KOW ), triolein-water partition coefficients (KTW ), and two types of polymer-lipid partition coefficients demonstrated that field-deployed mussels were not at equilibrium with many PCBs. A range of estimated equilibrium mussel bioaccumulation concentrations were calculated, with the magnitude of the KOW -based values being the smallest and the polymer-lipid partition coefficient-based values being the largest. These analyses are intended to assist environmental scientists and managers to interpret field deployment data when transitioning from biomonitoring to passive sampling. Predicting the bioavailability of nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments: ZIF-8/h-BN solid-phase microextraction versus Tenax extraction

The occurrence of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) in sediments has been widely reported, but research on NPAH bioavailability is lacking. In this study, a self-made zeolite imidazolate framework-8/hexagonal boron nitride (ZIF-8/h-BN) solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber and commercial Tenax are compared as efficient tools to predict the bioavailability of NPAHs in sediments with bioassays using Cipangopaludina chinensis. During the process of SPME, the NPAH concentrations on the ZIF-8/h-BN fibers reached extraction equilibrium after 72 h. The fiber extraction of NPAHs in sediments was well-fitted by the pseudo first-order kinetic model with a rate constant of 2 × 10−2 h−1 (R2 > 0.98). The extraction rates ranking of NPAHs in sediments was 2-nitrobiphenyl>1-nitropyrene>5-nitroacenaphthene>2-nitrofluorene. Compared with SPME, NPAH concentrations reached equilibrium after 168 h for the Tenax extraction. The orders of magnitude of fast, slow, and very slow desorption rate constants were 10−1, 10−2, and 10−4, respectively. At extraction equilibrium (168 h), the SPME was close to the bioavailability of the NPAHs in sediments to Cipangopaludina chinensis with a slope statistically approximated to one. In addition, the linear regression for SPME (R2 = 0.7285) was slightly higher than that of the Tenax extraction (R2 = 0.7168) over a short time (6 h). This could be because the coating material of ZIF-8/h-BN can rapidly adsorb freely dissolved NPAHs, and the SPME fibers can accurately predict the bioaccumulated concentrations of NPAHs in exposed organisms by measuring the concentration of NPAHs in the pore water of sediment. This study provides a time-saving and easy procedure to predict the bioavailability of NPAHs in sediments.

Determination of biomarkers threshold values and illustration of their use for the diagnostic in large-scale freshwater biomonitoring surveys

Abstract Background Several biomarkers developed from freshwater sentinel species are used to complement chemical assessment of freshwater ecosystems and improve the evaluation of their contamination levels. While active biomonitoring strategies allow to compare biological data in the field, the lack of assessment criteria to interpret biomarkers modulations restricts their application in freshwater biomonitoring surveys. For this purpose, the determination of threshold values emerges as a relevant approach to support the biomarker-based diagnosis within biomonitoring surveys. Based on the distribution of contamination baselines, a statistical approach was proposed to define threshold values of bioaccumulated concentrations in the sentinel species Gammarus fossarum. Although this methodology is limited to chemical databases, this approach could be adapted for defining threshold values at the biological level. This study aims to demonstrate the possibility of defining threshold values for different classes of biomarkers monitored in two freshwater sentinel species (Dreissena polymorpha, G. fossarum) and evidence the added value of such an approach in biomarker-based diagnosis. Results For this purpose, the study benefited from exceptional environmental biomarker datasets acquired from mussels and gammarids caged in hundred environmental sites, representative of the diversity of French water bodies. Thanks to these environmental datasets, inhibition and/or induction thresholds could be defined for 8 biochemical, cellular, and molecular biomarkers of D. polymorpha and 25 peptide biomarkers of G. fossarum, not influenced by confounding factors. Threshold values were then applied to another biomarker dataset acquired from mussels and gammarids caged upstream and downstream four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Several biomarkers were modulated both downstream and upstream of WWTPs, indicating a potential contamination not related to WWTPs. In contrast, some biomarkers were impacted exclusively downstream of the WWTPs, highlighting an impact of WWTP discharges on the aquatic fauna. Conclusions This study demonstrates the possibility to define threshold values for a wide range of biomarkers (cellular, biochemical and molecular) monitored on different sentinel species. The definition of threshold values constitutes an attractive solution to support the application of biomarkers in active biomonitoring surveys and improve the biomarker-based diagnosis without the need of “reference sites”.

Phytoremediation Potential and Physiological Mechanisms Underlying Metallic Extraction of Suaeda glauca, Artemisia desertorum, and Atriplex canescens

Mining activities have led to serious environmental (soil erosion, degradation of vegetation, and groundwater contamination) and human health (musculoskeletal problems, diarrheal conditions, and chronic diseases) issues at desert mining areas in northwest China. Native plant species grown naturally in desert regions show a unique tolerance to arid and semiarid conditions and are potential candidates for soil phytoremediation. Here, an ex situ experiment involving pot planting of seedlings of three native plant species (Suaeda glauca, Artemisia desertorum, and Atriplex canescens) was designed to explore their phytoremediation potential and the underlying physiological mechanism. For Zn and Cu, the three plants were all with a biological accumulation coefficient (BAC) greater than 1. For Cd, Ni, and Pb, Atriplex canescens had the highest bioaccumulation concentrations (521.52, 862.23, and 1734.59 mg/kg), with BAC values (1.06, 1.30, 1.25) greater than 1, which indicates that Atriplex canescens could be a broad-spectrum metal extraction plant. Physiological analysis (antioxidation, extracellular secretions, photosynthesis, and hydraulics) showed that the three desert plants exploited their unique strategy to protect against the stress of complex metals in soils. Moreover, the second growing period was the main heavy metal accumulation and extraction stage concomitant with highest water use efficiency (iWUE). Taken together, the three desert plants exhibited the potent heavy metal extraction ability and physiological and ecological adaptability to a harsh polluted environment in arid desert areas, providing potential resources for the bioremediation of metal-contaminated soils in an arid and semiarid desert environment.

Study on the enantioselective bioaccumulation and dissipation of uniconazole enantiomers in earthworm-soil microcosm through supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (SFC-MS/MS).

In this work, the enantioselective bioaccumulation and dissipation of uniconazole enantiomers in earthworm-soil microcosm were studied. A fast enantioseparation method of uniconazole through supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (SFC-MS/MS) was established. The CHIRALCEL OZ-3 column and a mixture of CO2 and methanol (80:20, v/v) were used within 1.0min to separate uniconazole enantiomers. The recoveries of uniconazole enantiomers in earthworm and soil samples ranged from 83.3 to 113%, and the intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation values were lower than 11%. In earthworms, the bioaccumulation concentrations of uniconazole enantiomers increased with time and reached the maximum on the 7th day and then decreased. The elimination of uniconazole enantiomers in earthworms followed the first-order kinetics equation, and the elimination half-lives were approximately 7days. In artificial soil, the dissipation of uniconazole enantiomers was slow, and the dissipation half-lives were both 25.7days. No enantioselectivity occurred in the earthworm-soil microcosm. These results may reduce the uncertainty of environmental risk assessment for uniconazole.

Stereoselective bioaccumulation and dissipation of pyrisoxazole in earthworm-soil microcosm

Pyrisoxazole is a chiral fungicide with high sterilizing activity to the plant pathogenic bacteria. It has two chiral C atoms, which bring four stereoisomers. The present work was the first time to explore the stereoselective bioaccumulation behavior of pyrisoxazole in earthworms by chiral liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF/MS). The absolute configurations of pyrisoxazole stereoisomers were confirmed by circular dichroism (CD) coupled with calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) method, and the elution order in Lux Cellulose-3 column was as follows: (−)-3S, 5R-pyrisoxazole, (+)-3R, 5S-pyrisoxazole, (+)-3S, 5S-pyrisoxazole and (−)-3R, 5R-pyrisoxazole. The recoveries of pyrisoxazole stereoisomers in earthworm and soil samples ranged from 80.8 % to 101 % with the RSD lower than 6.3 %. In bioaccumulation progress, (+)-3R, 5S-pyrisoxazole was accumulated preferentially in earthworms, and the bioaccumulation concentrations of high-activity (−)-3S, 5R-pyrisoxazole were the lowest. There were no stereoselective bioaccumulation between (+)-3S, 5S-pyrisoxazole and (−)-3R, 5R-pyrisoxazole, while there was diastereoselectivity between Z-pyrisoxazole and E-pyrisoxazole with higher E-pyrisoxazole concentrations. In the whole bioaccumulation process, the BAF values of (+)-3R, 5S-pyrisoxazole were significantly higher than (−)-3S, 5R-pyrisoxazole, and the BAF values of (−)-3S, 5R-pyrisoxazole were the lowest. The dissipation of pyrisoxazole stereoisomers in the artificial soil was very slow and had no stereoselectivity, and the existence of earthworms had little effects on the dissipation of pyrisoxazole stereoisomers, which indicated that the stereoselective behaviors of pyrisoxazole in earthworms were caused by the stereoselective enrichment and dissipation of earthworms themselves. Taken together, (−)-3S, 5R-pyrisoxazole was recommend as a commercial product. This study played a positive role in guiding the development of environmentally friendly pesticides and provided database for the environmental and biological risk assessment of pyrisoxazole.

Phytoavailability and uptake of arsenic in ryegrass affected by various amendments in soil of an abandoned gold mining site

Abandoned gold mining spoils pose socio-environmental, human, and animal health impacts and threaten sustainability of mineral extraction. Green trials and ecological solutions are required to effectively remediate these contaminated soils and mitigate the associated risks. Here, we carried out a pot experiment using a highly contaminated soil (mean total As = 5104.0 mg/kg) collected from an abandoned mine spoil in Ghana. We aimed to quantify the impacts of compost, iron oxide, and poultry manure on the mobilization, fractionation, and uptake of As by ryegrass (Lolium perenne). The soil amendments were applied at a rate of 5% (w/w) each, separately or in combination. We extracted the mine spoil soil readily-bioavailable As and specific-sorbed As, and determined the As contents in plant and the uptake after harvest. The plant transfer indices for soil-to-root (bioconcentration factor, BCF), soil-to-shoot (bioaccumulation concentration- BAC), and root-to-shoot (translocation factor- TF) were also calculated. Addition of manure increased the mining readily-bioavailable As by 243% and specific-sorbed As by 38%, as compared to the control. Manure addition further aided root As-uptake by 134%, whilst its combination with compost increased uptake by 101%. Lone addition of manure and in combination with compost resulted in BCF above 1, indicating increased As-phytostability. The presence of carbon and iron in the roots of the ryegrass sorbed or precipitated As limited its soil-to-shoot and root-to-shoot transfer. These findings indicate that manure alone and in combination with compost can be used to augment the phytoremediation efficiency of ryegrass in the As-contaminated spoil.

Drivers of biomagnification of Hg, As and Se in aquatic food webs: A review

Biomagnification of trace elements is increasingly evident in aquatic ecosystems. In this review we investigate the drivers of biomagnification of mercury (Hg), arsenic (As) and selenium (Se) in aquatic food webs. Despite Hg, As and Se biomagnify in food webs, the biomagnification potential of Hg is much higher than that of As and Se. The slope of trophic increase of Hg is consistent between temperate (0.20), tropical (0.22) and Arctic (0.22) ecosystems. Se exerts a mitigating role against Hg toxicity but desired maximum and minimum concentrations are unknown. Environmental (e.g. latitude, temperature and physicochemical characteristics) and ecological factors (e.g. trophic structure composition and food zone) can substantially influence the biomagnification process these metal (oids). Besides the level of bioaccumulated concentration, biomagnification depends on the biology, ecology and physiology of the organisms that play a key role in this process. However, it may be necessary to determine strictly biological, physiological and environmental factors that could modulate the concentrations of As and Se in particular. The information presented here should provide clues for research that include under-researched variables. Finally, we suggest that biomagnification be incorporated into environmental management policies, mainly in risk assessment, monitoring and environmental protection methods.

Transferring waste red mud into ferric oxide decorated ANA-type zeolite for multiple heavy metals polluted soil remediation

Herein, a novel "waste reclamation for soil remediation" strategy has been developed for both alkaline waste red mud (RM) recycling and heavy metal (HM) polluted soil remediation. Through a direct one-pot hydrothermal reaction process, the Al, Si, alkali, and Fe2O3 components in waste RM have been transferred into ferric oxide decorated ANA-type zeolite (Fe2O3-ANA). As tested by the HMs polluted soil remediation and oilseed rape planting experiment, when 25 g/kg Fe2O3-ANA is added into the Pb2+, Cu2+, Cr3+ and anionic AsO2- polluted soil (HM concentration: 100–200 mg/kg), it can effectively suppress the HMs mobility in soil and reduce the bio-accumulation concentrations of HMs in the harvested oilseed rape (reduce ratio: 37.9–69.5%). The detailed mechanism study using energy dispersive X-ray energy spectroscopy, in-depth X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density function theory calculation concludes that the Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cr3+ in soil have been adsorbed and trapped in the framework structure of ANA in Fe2O3-ANA mainly via the cation exchange process. While the anionic AsO2- species are mainly caught by the Fe2O3 component in Fe2O3-ANA via surface adsorption. Overall, this work firstly transforms waste RM into Fe2O3-ANA for soil remediation, which is valuable to waste resource recycling and environmental conservation.

Effect of abiotic factors and environmental concentrations on the bioaccumulation of persistent organic and inorganic compounds to freshwater fish and mussels

Many aquatic ecosystems are under persistent stress due to influxes of anthropogenic chemical pollutants. High concentrations can harm entire ecosystems and be toxic to humans. However, in case of highly hydrophobic compounds, their low water solubility precludes direct measurement in water, and thus alternative monitoring strategies are needed. In the present study, we investigated the extent to which bioaccumulated concentrations of persistent compounds can be predicted by concentrations in environmental compartments (water and sediment). Due to their high biomagnification potential, Hg and PFOS were included in this analysis as well. At 44 field locations in Flanders (Belgium), we monitored the concentrations of 11 priority compounds and their derivatives, included in the Water Framework Directive, in both sediment and water (where feasible) and biota (European perch, European eel and freshwater mussels). Besides, some sediment (i.e. total organic carbon (TOC) and clay content) and water characteristics were measured (i.e. pH, oxygen level, conductivity, nitrate, nitrite and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)). Measurements of HCB, HCBD, cis-heptachlorepoxide, HBCD and PFOS in sediment and ∑PCB in water showed a lower detection frequency than in fish samples. While PCB profiles were comparable between all matrices, for PBDE clear differences were detected between sediment and fish profiles, with BDE99 contributing the most for sediment (34%) and BDE47 for fish (≥44%), followed by BDE99 for perch (28%) and BDE100 for eel (25%). Water concentrations for PFOS and benzo(a)pyrene were predictive of respective bioaccumulated concentrations. HCB, ∑PCB and ∑PBDE, concentrations in fish were dependent on sediment concentrations and negatively related to organic compound levels (p < 0.05). Furthermore, pH and nitrite were negatively associated with accumulated concentrations in eel for HCB and PFOS, respectively (p < 0.05). Strong relationships between bioaccumulation and sediment and/or water concentrations strengthened the basis for surrogate monitoring methods. Finally, the extrapolation potential of Hg, ∑PBDE, PFOS, HBCD and ∑PCB between both fish species offered new opportunities in extrapolating different European monitoring frameworks.

Analysis of Manganese Bioaccumulated in Mediterranean Blue Mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from the Bay of Mali Ston (Adriatic Sea, Croatia) during Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning Toxicity

Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) toxicity was revealed in the Mediterranean blue mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from the Bay of Mali Ston, in the south part of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, through the Croatian National Monitoring Programme in the period from January until June of 2011. A survey of DSP toxicity within the frame of regular controls carried out through the mouse bioassay (MBA, at the time the official method for DSP toxins) demonstrated that in some incidents, positive MBA, which manifested by the atypical symptomatology of the animals, dominated. Additional studies were done to explain the atypical results of the conducted biological tests at the time. In the current study, the bioaccumulated manganese concentration in the soft tissues of mussels was measured to investigate its influence on the MBA results. In both DSP negative and DSP positive samples, which were prepared for the analysis according to the modified US EPA 3052 method, the concentration of the bioaccumulated manganese was performed on the atomic absorption spectrometer using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy technique. The analysis revealed higher concentration of manganese in 87% of DSP positive samples and the expressed per wet weight ranged from 0.15 to 5.38 mg kg−1. The mean concentration of manganese for all DSP positive samples was 1.78 mg kg−1, while for DSP negative samples, it was 48% lower (0.93 mg kg−1). The highest concentration of manganese in DSP positive samples was measured in February 2011. Since the low concentrations of lipophilic biotoxins gymnodimines (GYMs) and spirolides (SPXs) were also detected in the analysed DSP positive samples in the parallel studies, the results obtained in this study suggest future investigations of the connection between the concentration of manganese and lipophilic biotoxins.

Bioremediation of synthetic textile dyes using live yeast Pichia pastoris

Abstract A comparative study of the accumulation of Reactive Red 11 (RR11) and Acid Green 1 (AG1) dyes using live yeast culture Pichia pastoris (P. pastoris) was investigated. The changes in inoculum volume, pH, initial dye concentration and incubation temperature were studied. The maximum percentage of color removal efficiency, dye uptake capacity and bioaccumulation concentrations were found at pH 2. The maximum dried biomass concentration was found at pH 3. When the dye concentration increased, the percentage of color removal, specific growth rate and dried biomass concentrations decreased. However, the dye uptake capacity increased with an increase in the initial dye concentration. At an ambient temperature of 30 °C, the uptake efficiency for both the dyes was optimal The yeast biomass was characterized using scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral analysis. In this study, P. pastoris accumulated both dyes and was found to be more suitable for AG1 dye than RR11 dye.

Evaluation of non-carcinogenic health risks of thallium in grapevine exposed to mine waters of an abandoned mining region in Turkey

In this study, non-carcinogenic health risks of thallium in grapevine exposed to mine waters of an abandoned mining region in Turkey were evaluated. The values of thallium were investigated in leaves, stems, and roots. Translocation factors (TF) and bioaccumulation concentration factors (BCF) were determined. The maximum thallium value in grapevines (root) was 2.34 ± 0.12 mg/kg. Thallium values in grapevine were stem female > male. Hazard index values of thallium in grapevines were ingestion 1 for thallium in grapevines. Therefore, there are non-carcinogenic health risks of thallium in grapevine exposed to mine waters of an abandoned mining region.

Metals uptake and translocation in salt marsh macrophytes, Porteresia sp. from Bangladesh coastal area

Studies from around the world have suggested salt marshes or coastal wetlands can be used as sites for phytoremediation of metals. However, no investigations have been conducted to assess metal accumulation and translocation capabilities of salt marsh macrophytes from Bangladesh coastal area. The aim of this study was to evaluate the uptake and translocation of eight metals, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Co, Rb, Sr, and Pb in Porteresia sp. from the six salt marsh sites of Bangladesh. The leaf, shoots and root tissues of Porteresia sp. samples were analyzed for metals by using the energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). The decreasing trend of metal concentrations was, in roots; Fe > Mn > Pb > Cu > Zn > Sr > Rb > Co, in shoots; Mn >Fe > Cu > Pb > Zn > Sr > Rb > Co, in leaves; Fe > Mn > Cu > Pb > Zn > Rb > Sr > Co. Generally, roots of the Porteresia sp. showed high accumulation of the metals when compared to shoots and leaves suggesting relevant availability in the sediment. Pb was the only metal with concentrations significantly higher in the leaves and shoots than in the root. Except for Pb, bioaccumulation concentration factor (BCF) for all metals was lower than 1 in plant organs indicating poor absorption and bioavailability of metals. Higher value (>1) of BCF for Pb infers the species can potentially be used for Pb phytoremediation. However, the translocation factor (TF) confirmed the diversified mobility of the metals from below-ground part to above-ground parts for all the measured metals in the salt marsh species. Highest mobility was observed for Mn and Pb. But it was hard to find any regular trends among all the metals and all the sites.

Bioaccumulation of trace elements affects chick body condition and gut microbiome in greater flamingos

Elevated concentrations of trace elements represent a major concern to wetland ecosystems, since river estuaries are geochemical endpoints that accumulate pollution. Although the negative impact of environmental exposure of highly toxic elements such as Pb and Hg has received substantial attention, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of the effects that these and other common trace elements have on natural populations. We used greater flamingos as a study system within three sites that represent a gradient of pollution. Controlling for environmental sediment exposure, we assessed if signatures of bioaccumulation in feathers for ten trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, Sn and Zn) are associated with two known proxies of health: body condition and the gut bacterial microbiome. We found evidence of an adverse effect of Se, Hg, and Pb bioaccumulation on body condition. Furthermore, bioaccumulation of the elements As, Cu, Se, Pb and Zn influenced different aspects of the gut microbiome. Bioaccumulation of Se led to a shift in the microbiome composition, largely driven by an enrichment of Bacteroides plebeius, which is linked to the breakdown of sulphated polysaccharides of algae. Bacteroides plebeius was negatively associated with chick body condition, suggesting an adverse effect of a microalgae diet rich in Se. Pb bioaccumulation was linked with a decrease in microbial diversity (adjusted-R2 = 10.4%) and an increase in heterogeneity of the microbial community (adjusted-R2 = 10.5%), an indication of impaired gut homeostasis. As, Cu and Zn had more nuanced effects on gut microbiome heterogeneity according to breeding site and bioaccumulation concentration. Our results therefore suggest that in addition to well-studied elements, bioaccumulation of poorly studied elements also adversely affect health of natural populations.

Efficacy of two seaweeds dry mass in bioremediation of heavy metal polluted soil and growth of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) plant.

This study investigated the effect of Ulva fasciata and Sargassum lacerifolium seaweeds as heavy metal remediators for soil and on the growth of radish (Raphanus sativus L.). The soil was inoculated by dry biomass of each seaweed alone and by their mixture. Seaweeds inoculation increased the organic matter content, clay-size fraction, and nutrients in the soil.Seaweeds mixture treatment caused a significant reduction in the contents of Pb, Cu, Zn and Ni in the soil samples and reduced them to the tolerable limits (40.2, 49.3, 43.8 and 1.1 mg kg-1, respectively), while Cd, Cr, Fe, and Mn contents were closely decreased to the tolerable limits. Biosorption of soil heavy metals by seaweeds decreased the bioaccumulated concentrations of metals in radish plant roots and/or translocated to its shoots compared to control. For seaweeds mixture-treated soil, cultivated radish roots were able to phyto-extract Cd, Cu, Cr, and Ni from the soil (bioaccumulation factor values > 1) of 7.45, 1.18, 3.13, and 26.6, respectively. Seaweeds inoculation promoted the growth of cultivated radish and improved the germination percentage and the morphological and biochemical growth parameters compared to control plants. The achieved soil remediation by dried seaweeds might be due to their efficient metal biosorption capacity due to the existence of active functional groups on their cell wall surfaces. Increased growth observed in radish was as a result of nutrients and growth hormones (gibberellins, indole acetic acid, and cytokinins) present in dried seaweeds. This study shows the efficiency of seaweeds as eco-friendly bioremediators for controlling soil pollution.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Sex Hormone Concentrations in Ringed and Grey Seals: A Possible Link to Endocrine Disruption?

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are recognised reproductive and immune system toxicants in marine mammals mediated by endocrine-disrupting mechanisms. As with other predators, seals are exposed to elevated bioaccumulated concentrations of PCBs and other persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Cryopreserved plasma samples from adult ringed (Phoca hispida; n = 39) and grey (Halichoerus grypus; n = 38) seals, sampled between 1998 and 2002 from Baltic Sea, Svalbard, and Sable Island (Canada) were used to investigate relationships between PCB exposure and sex hormone concentrations (progesterone; P4, 17α-hydroxy progesterone; 17α-OH-P4, testosterone; T4, 17β-estradiol; E2, estrone; E3). Immunoassay methods were used for quantification of analytes due to the limited sample volumes available. PCB concentrations were found to be significantly higher in Baltic seals than other sampling locations and were classed as “Exposed” seals while Svalbard and Sable Is seal were classed “Reference” seals (sexes and species separate). Mean hormone concentrations in Exposed seal were lower than Reference seals, and this was statistically significantly for 17α-OH-P4 (both sexes and both species), E2 (ringed and grey seal females), and E3 (grey seal females). Regression analyses (PCB v hormone concentrations) for each sex and species revealed significant correlations for P4 (Sable Is. female grey seals and female ringed seals), 17α-OH-P4 (Sable Is. male grey seals and Svalbard male ringed seals), T4 (Svalbard male ringed seals), E2 (female ringed seals), and E3 (female ringed seals and Baltic female grey seals). Although significant correlations are not evidence of cause and effect, the potential impact of hormone changes on endocrine homeostasis and reproductive health for seal populations warrants further investigation given that PCB concentrations found here are in the same range as those currently reported in seals from these populations.
