A facile post-assembly approach for the fabrication of non-close-packed gold nanocrystal arrays from binary nanocrystal superlattices.

Here, we demonstrate a novel approach for fabricating non-close-packed gold nanocrystal arrays using facile one-step post-modification of a Cs4PbBr6-Au binary nanocrystal superlattice by electron beam etching of the perovskite phase. The proposed methodology can serve as a promising approach for the scalable preparation of a vast library of non-close-packed nanoparticulate superstructures with various morphologies composed of numerous colloidal nanocrystals.

Shape-Directed Co-Assembly of Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocubes with Dielectric Nanodisks into Binary Nanocrystal Superlattices.

Self-assembly of colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) holds great promise in the multiscale engineering of solid-state materials, whereby atomically engineered NC building blocks are arranged into long-range ordered structures—superlattices (SLs)—with synergistic physical and chemical properties. Thus far, the reports have by far focused on single-component and binary systems of spherical NCs, yielding SLs isostructural with the known atomic lattices. Far greater structural space, beyond the realm of known lattices, is anticipated from combining NCs of various shapes. Here, we report on the co-assembly of steric-stabilized CsPbBr3 nanocubes (5.3 nm) with disk-shaped LaF3 NCs (9.2–28.4 nm in diameter, 1.6 nm in thickness) into binary SLs, yielding six columnar structures with AB, AB2, AB4, and AB6 stoichiometry, not observed before and in our reference experiments with NC systems comprising spheres and disks. This striking effect of the cubic shape is rationalized herein using packing-density calculations. Furthermore, in the systems with comparable dimensions of nanocubes (8.6 nm) and nanodisks (6.5 nm, 9.0 nm, 12.5 nm), other, noncolumnar structures are observed, such as ReO3-type SL, featuring intimate intermixing and face-to-face alignment of disks and cubes, face-centered cubic or simple cubic sublattice of nanocubes, and two or three disks per one lattice site. Lamellar and ReO3-type SLs, employing large 8.6 nm CsPbBr3 NCs, exhibit characteristic features of the collective ultrafast light emission—superfluorescence—originating from the coherent coupling of emission dipoles in the excited state.

Perovskite-type superlattices from lead halide perovskite nanocubes.

Atomically defined assemblies of dye molecules (such as H and J aggregates) have been of interest for more than 80 years because of the emergence of collective phenomena in their optical spectra1-3, their coherent long-range energy transport, their conceptual similarity to natural light-harvesting complexes4,5, and their potential use as light sources and in photovoltaics. Another way of creating versatile and controlled aggregates that exhibit collective phenomena involves the organization of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals into long-range-ordered superlattices6. Caesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals7-9 are promising building blocks for such superlattices, owing to the high oscillator strength of bright triplet excitons10, slow dephasing (coherence times of up to 80 picoseconds) and minimal inhomogeneous broadening of emission lines11,12. So far, only single-component superlattices with simple cubic packing have been devised from these nanocrystals13. Here we present perovskite-type (ABO3) binary and ternary nanocrystal superlattices, created via the shape-directed co-assembly of steric-stabilized, highly luminescent cubic CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (which occupy the B and/or O lattice sites), spherical Fe3O4 or NaGdF4 nanocrystals (A sites) and truncated-cuboid PbS nanocrystals (B sites). These ABO3 superlattices, as well as the binary NaCl and AlB2 superlattice structures that we demonstrate, exhibit a high degree of orientational ordering of the CsPbBr3 nanocubes. They also exhibit superfluorescence-a collective emission that results in a burst of photons with ultrafast radiative decay (22 picoseconds) that could be tailored for use in ultrabright (quantum) light sources. Our work paves the way for further exploration of complex, ordered and functionally useful perovskite mesostructures.

Binary Assembly of PbS and Au Nanocrystals: Patchy PbS Surface Ligand Coverage Stabilizes the CuAu Superlattice.

Self-assembly of two sizes of nearly spherical colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) capped with hydrocarbon surface ligands has been shown to produce more than 20 distinct phases of binary nanocrystal superlattices (BNSLs). Such structural diversity, in striking contrast to binary systems of micron-sized colloidal beads, cannot be rationalized by models assuming entropy-driven crystallization of simple spheres. In this work, we show that the PbS ligandbinding equilibrium controls the relative stability of two closely related BNSL structures featuring alternating layers of PbS and Au NCs. At an intermediate size ratio, as-prepared PbS NCs assemble with Au NCs into CuAu BNSLs featuring orientational coherence of PbS NCs across the lattice. Measurement of interparticle separations within CuAu and modeling of the structure reveal that PbS inorganic cores are nearly in contact through (100) NC surfaces in the square tiling of the CuAu basal plane. On the other hand, AlB2 BNSLs with PbS NCs packed in random orientations were found to be the dominant self-assembly product when the same binary NC solution was evaporated in the presence of added oleic acid (OAH). Solution nuclear magnetic resonance titration experiments confirmed that added OAH binds to PbS NCs, implicating ligand surface coverage as an important factor influencing the relative stability of CuAu and AlB2 BNSLs at the experimental size ratio. From these results, we conclude that as-prepared PbS NCs feature sparsely covered (100) surfaces and thus effectively flat patches along NC x-, y-, and z-directions. Such anisotropic PbS-PbS interactions can be efficiently screened by restoring effectively spherical NC shape via addition of OAH to the binary assembly solution. Our findings underscore the important contribution of NC surfaces to superlattice phase stability and offer a strategy for targeted BNSL assembly.

Systematic Mapping of Binary Nanocrystal Superlattices: The Role of Topology in Phase Selection.

The self-assembly of two sizes of spherical nanocrystals has revealed a surprisingly diverse library of structures. To date, at least 15 distinct binary nanocrystal superlattice (BNSL) structures have been identified. The stability of these binary phases cannot be fully explained using the traditional conceptual framework treating the assembly process as entropy-driven crystallization of rigid spherical particles. Such deviation from hard sphere behavior may be explained by the soft and deformable layer of ligands that envelops the nanocrystals, which contributes significantly to the overall size and shape of assembling particles. In this work, we describe a set of experiments designed to elucidate the role of the ligand corona in shaping the thermodynamics and kinetics of BNSL assembly. Using hydrocarbon-capped Au and PbS nanocrystals as a model binary system, we systematically tuned the core radius ( R) and ligand chain length ( L) of particles and subsequently assembled them into binary superlattices. The resulting database of binary structures enabled a detailed analysis of the role of effective nanocrystal size ratio, as well as softness expressed as L/ R, in directing the assembly of binary structures. This catalog of superlattices allowed us to not only study the frequency of different phases but to also systematically measure the geometric parameters of the BNSLs. This analysis allowed us to evaluate new theoretical models treating the cocrystallization of deformable spheres and to formulate new hypotheses about the factors affecting the nucleation and growth of the binary superlattices. Among other insights, our results suggest that the relative abundance of the binary phases observed may be explained not only by considerations of thermodynamic stability, but also by a postulated preordering of the binary fluid into local structures with icosahedral or polytetrahedral symmetry prior to nucleation.

Scalable Assembly of Crystalline Binary Nanocrystal Superparticles and Their Enhanced Magnetic and Electrochemical Properties.

Self-assembled binary nanocrystal superlattices (BNSLs) represent an important class of solid-state materials with potentially designed properties. In pursuit of widening the range of applications for binary superlattice materials, it is desirable to develop scalable assembly methods that enable high-quality BNSLs with tailored compositions, structures, and morphologies. Here, we report the gram-scale assembly of crystalline binary nanocrystal superparticles with high phase purity through an emulsion-based process. The structure of the resulting BNSL colloids can be tuned in a wide range (AB13, AlB2, MgZn2, NaCl, and CaCu5) by varying the size and/or number ratios of the two nanocrystal components. Access to large-scale, phase-pure BNSL colloids offers vast opportunities for investigating their physiochemical properties, as exemplified by AB13-type CoFe2O4-Fe3O4 binary superparticles. Our results show that CoFe2O4-Fe3O4 binary superparticles not only display enhanced magnetic coupling but also exhibit superior lithium-storage properties. The nonclosed-packed NC packing arrangements of AB13-type binary superparticles are found to play a key role in facilitating lithiation/delithiation kinetics and maintaining structural integrity during repeated cycling. Our work establishes the scalable assembly of high-quality BNSL colloids, which is beneficial for accelerating the exploration of multicomponent nanocrystal superlattices toward various applications.

Many Body Effects and Icosahedral Order in Superlattice Self-Assembly.

We elucidate how nanocrystals "bond" to form ordered structures. For that purpose we consider nanocrystal configurations consisting of regular polygons and polyhedra, which are the motifs that constitute single component and binary nanocrystal superlattices, and simulate them using united atom models. We compute the free energy and quantify many body effects, i.e., those that cannot be accounted for by pair potential (two-body) interactions, further showing that they arise from coalescing vortices of capping ligands. We find that such vortex textures exist for configurations with local coordination number ≤6. For higher coordination numbers, vortices are expelled and nanocrystals arrange in configurations with tetrahedral or icosahedral order. We provide explicit formulas for the optimal separations between nanocrystals, which correspond to the minima of the free energies. Our results quantitatively explain the structure of superlattice nanocrystals as reported in experiments and reveal how packing arguments, extended to include soft components, predict ordered nanocrystal aggregation.

Hierarchical Materials Design by Pattern Transfer Printing of Self-Assembled Binary Nanocrystal Superlattices

We demonstrate the fabrication of hierarchical materials by controlling the structure of highly ordered binary nanocrystal superlattices (BNSLs) on multiple length scales. Combinations of magnetic, plasmonic, semiconducting, and insulating colloidal nanocrystal (NC) building blocks are self-assembled into BNSL membranes via the liquid-interfacial assembly technique. Free-standing BNSL membranes are transferred onto topographically structured poly(dimethylsiloxane) molds via the Langmuir-Schaefer technique and then deposited in patterns onto substrates via transfer printing. BNSLs with different structural motifs are successfully patterned into various meso- and microstructures such as lines, circles, and even three-dimensional grids across large-area substrates. A combination of electron microscopy and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) measurements confirm the ordering of NC building blocks in meso- and micropatterned BNSLs. This technique demonstrates structural diversity in the design of hierarchical materials by assembling BNSLs from NC building blocks of different composition and size by patterning BNSLs into various size and shape superstructures of interest for a broad range of applications.

Supracrystalline Colloidal Eggs: Epitaxial Growth and Freestanding Three-Dimensional Supracrystals in Nanoscaled Colloidosomes.

The concept of template-confined chemical reactions allows the synthesis of complex molecules that would hardly be producible through conventional method. This idea was developed to produce high quality nanocrystals more than 20 years ago. However, template-mediated assembly of colloidal nanocrystals is still at an elementary level, not only because of the limited templates suitable for colloidal assemblies, but also because of the poor control over the assembly of nanocrystals within a confined space. Here, we report the design of a new system called "supracrystalline colloidal eggs" formed by controlled assembly of nanocrystals into complex colloidal supracrystals through superlattice-matched epitaxial overgrowth along the existing colloidosomes. Then, with this concept, we extend the supracrystalline growth to lattice-mismatched binary nanocrystal superlattices, in order to reach anisotropic superlattice growths, yielding freestanding binary nanocrystal supracrystals that could not be produced previously.

Solvent-Mediated Crystallization of Nanocrystal 3D Assemblies of Silver Nanocrystals: Unexpected Superlattice Ripening

Solvent–ligand interactions in colloidal nanocrystals are of significant importance as they can be used to modulate the way they pack into superlattices. Here, we demonstrate that the crystal structures of the nanocrystal superlattices made of 2.2 nm Ag nanocrystals can be controlled by using different carrier solvents. Specifically, the superlattice structures are tuned from body-centered cubic (bcc) to face-centered cubic (fcc) when varying solvents from hexane to tetrachloroethylene (TCE). Furthermore, by simultaneously annealing these two samples at different temperatures, bcc structures originating from hexane solutions are dominated by a simple coalescence mechanism, while the fcc structure stemming from TCE solutions undergoes an Ostwald ripening process that can produce a variety of binary nanocrystal superlattices such as NaCl, AlB2, NaZn13, and MgZn2, the formation of those structures being well explained by a pure entropy driven process. Structural diversity in binary superlattices self-assembled from polymer-grafted nanocrystals

Multicomponent nanocrystal superlattices represent an interesting class of material that derives emergent properties from mesoscale structure, yet their programmability can be limited by the alkyl-chain-based ligands decorating the surfaces of the constituent nanocrystals. Polymeric ligands offer distinct advantages, as they allow for more precise tuning of the effective size and ‘interaction softness' through changes to the polymer's molecular weight, chemical nature, architecture, persistence length and surrounding solvent. Here we show the formation of 10 different binary nanocrystal superlattices (BNSLs) with both two- and three-dimensional order through independent adjustment of the core size of spherical nanocrystals and the molecular weight of densely grafted polystyrene ligands. These polymer-brush-based ligands introduce new energetic contributions to the interparticle potential that stabilizes various BNSL phases across a range of length scales and interparticle spacings. Our study opens the door for nanocrystals to become modular elements in the design of functional particle brush solids with controlled nanoscale interfaces and mesostructures.

Ligand Exchange Governs the Crystal Structures in Binary Nanocrystal Superlattices.

The surface chemistry in colloidal nanocrystals on the final crystalline structure of binary superlattices produced by self-assembly of two sets of nanocrystals is hereby demonstrated. By mixing nanocrystals having two different sizes and the same coating agent, oleylamine (OAM), the binary nanocrystal superlattices that are produced, such as NaCl, AlB2, NaZn13, and MgZn2, are well in agreement with the crystalline structures predicted by the hard-sphere model, their formation being purely driven by entropic forces. By opposition, when large and small nanocrystals are coated with two different ligands [OAM and dodecanethiol (DDT), respectively] while keeping all other experimental conditions unchanged, the final binary structures markedly change and various structures with lower packing densities, such as Cu3Au, CaB6, and quasicrystals, are observed. This effect of the nanocrystals' coating agents could also be extended to other binary systems, such as Ag-Au and CoFe2O4-Ag supracrystalline binary lattices. In order to understand this effect, a mechanism based on ligand exchange process is proposed. Ligand exchange mechanism is believed to affect the thermodynamics in the formation of binary systems composed of two sets of nanocrystals with different sizes and bearing two different coating agents. Hence, the formation of binary superlattices with lower packing densities may be favored kinetically because the required energetic penalty is smaller than that of a denser structure.

Shape- and Structure-Based Phonon Bandgap Tuning with Nanocrystal Superlattices

In this paper we report, for the first time, the phononic band structure of nanocrystal superlattices with different shapes, sizes, compositions, and structures. For superlattices composed of a single type of nanocrystal core, we show that by merely changing the nanocrystal shape the bandgap width is affected significantly: nanocrystal shapes with higher surface to volume ratio result in larger phononic bandgaps. Furthermore, structural changes are shown to be important as face-centered cubic and body-centered cubic structures with the same nanocrystal core size present 28 and 76% smaller bandgaps compared to the simple cubic structure. For binary nanocrystal superlattices, we show that different structures can lead to a wide range of phononic bandgaps and that structures with larger combined nanoparticle core volume fractions introduce larger phononic bandgaps. Changing the composition of the binary systems while keeping the same structure is found to provide an effective means of tuning the phononic bandgaps. On the basis of their tunable bandgap widths and frequencies, nanocrystal superlattices provide promising materials for sound or heat manipulation purposes.

Many-body effects in nanocrystal superlattices: departure from sphere packing explains stability of binary phases.

This work analyzes the role of hydrocarbon ligands in the self-assembly of nanocrystal (NC) superlattices. Typical NCs, composed of an inorganic core of radius R and a layer of capping ligands with length L, can be described as soft spheres with softness parameter L/R. Using particle tracking measurements of transmission electron microscopy images, we find that close-packed NCs, like their hard-sphere counterparts, fill space at approximately 74% density independent of softness. We uncover deformability of the ligand capping layer that leads to variable effective NC size in response to the coordination environment. This effect plays an important role in the packing of particles in binary nanocrystal superlattices (BNSLs). Measurements on BNSLs composed of NCs of varying softness in several coordination geometries indicate that NCs deform to produce dense BNSLs that would otherwise be low-density arrangements if the particles remained spherical. Consequently, rationalizing the mixing of two NC species during BNSL self-assembly need not employ complex energetic interactions. We summarize our analysis in a set of packing rules. These findings contribute to a general understanding of entropic effects during crystallization of deformable objects (e.g., nanoparticles, micelles, globular proteins) that can adapt their shape to the local coordination environment.

Beyond entropy: magnetic forces induce formation of quasicrystalline structure in binary nanocrystal superlattices.

Here, it is shown that binary superlattices of Co/Ag nanocrystals with the same size, surface coating, differing by their type of crystallinity are governed by Co-Co magnetic interactions. By using 9 nm amorphous-phase Co nanocrystals and 4 nm polycrystalline Ag nanocrystals at 25 °C, triangle-shaped NaCl-type binary nanocrystal superlattices are produced driven by the entropic force, maximizing the packing density. By contrast, using ferromagnetic 9 nm single domain (hcp) Co nanocrystals instead of amorphous-phase Co, dodecagonal quasicrystalline order is obtained, together with less-packed phases such as the CoAg13 (NaZn13-type), CoAg (AuCu-type), and CoAg3 (AuCu3-type) structures. On increasing temperature to 65 °C, 9 nm hcp Co nanocrystals become superparamagnetic, and the system yields the CoAg3 (AuCu3-type) and CoAg2 (AlB2-type) structures, as observed with 9 nm amorphous Co nanocrystals. Furthermore, by decreasing the Co nanocrystal size from 9 to 7 nm, stable AlB2-type binary nanocrystal superlattices are produced, which remain independent of the crystallinity of Co nanocrystals with the superparamagnetic state.

Connecting the particles in the box--controlled fusion of hexamer nanocrystal clusters within an AB₆ binary nanocrystal superlattice.

Binary nanocrystal superlattices present unique opportunities to create novel interconnected nanostructures by partial fusion of specific components of the superlattice. Here, we demonstrate the binary AB6 superlattice of PbSe and Fe2O3 nanocrystals as a model system to transform the central hexamer of PbSe nanocrystals into a single fused particle. We present detailed structural analysis of the superlattices by combining high-resolution X-ray scattering and electron microscopy. Molecular dynamics simulations show optimum separation of nanocrystals in agreement with the experiment and provide insights into the molecular configuration of surface ligands. We describe the concept of nanocrystal superlattices as a versatile ‘nanoreactor' to create and study novel materials based on precisely defined size, composition and structure of nanocrystals into a mesostructured cluster. We demonstrate ‘controlled fusion' of nanocrystals in the clusters in reactions initiated by thermal treatment and pulsed laser annealing.

Shape-Dependent Plasmonic Response and Directed Self-Assembly in a New Semiconductor Building Block, Indium-Doped Cadmium Oxide (ICO)

The influence of particle shape on plasmonic response and local electric field strength is well-documented in metallic nanoparticles. Morphologies such as rods, plates, and octahedra are readily synthesized and exhibit drastically different extinction spectra than spherical particles. Despite this fact, the influence of composition and shape on the optical properties of plasmonic semiconductor nanocrystals, in which free electrons result from heavy doping, has not been well-studied. Here, we report the first observation of plasmonic resonance in indium-doped cadmium oxide (ICO) nanocrystals, which exhibit the highest quality factors reported for semiconductor nanocrystals. Furthermore, we are able to independently control the shape and free electron concentration in ICO nanocrystals, allowing for the influence of shape on the optical response of a plasmonic semiconductor to be conclusively demonstrated. The highly uniform particles may be self-assembled into ordered single component and binary nanocrystal superlattices, and in thin films, exhibit negative permittivity in the near infrared (NIR) region, validating their use as a new class of tunable low-loss plasmonic building blocks for 3-D optical metamaterials.

Tunable Plasmonic Coupling in Self-Assembled Binary Nanocrystal Superlattices Studied by Correlated Optical Microspectrophotometry and Electron Microscopy

We study the plasmonic properties of self-assembled binary nanocrystal superlattices (BNSLs) using correlated optical microspectrophotometry and electron microscopy performed on individual BNSL domains. The strength of near-field couplings between adjacent plasmonic nanocrystals (NCs) can be systematically engineered by varying the NC size, composition, and the lattice symmetry of BNSLs, leading to broadband spectral tunability of the collective plasmonic response of BNSLs across the entire visible spectrum. Self-assembled multicomponent NC superlattices represent a versatile platform for the rational design of macroscopic three-dimensional plasmonic metamaterials with emergent optical characteristics.
