Bilateral arm movements are coordinated via task-dependent negotiations between independent and codependent control, but not by a "coupling" control policy.

Prior research has shown that coordination of bilateral arm movements might be attributed to either control policies that minimize performance and control costs regardless of bilateral symmetry or by control coupling, which activates bilaterally homologous muscles as a single unit to achieve symmetric performance. We hypothesize that independent bimanual control (movements of one arm are performed without influence on the other) and codependent bimanual control (two arms are constrained to move together with high spatiotemporal symmetry) are two extremes on a coordination spectrum that can be negotiated to meet infinite variations in task demands. To better understand and distinguish between these views, we designed a task where minimization of either control costs or asymmetry would yield different patterns of coordination. Participants made bilateral reaches with a shared visual cursor to a midline target. We then covertly varied the gain contribution of either hand to the shared cursor's horizontal position. Across two experiments, we show that bilateral coordination retains high task-dependent sensitivity to subtle visual feedback gain asymmetries applied to the shared cursor. Specifically, we found a change from strong spatial covariation between hands during equal gains to more independent control during asymmetric gains, which occurred rapidly and with high specificity to the dimension of gain manipulation. Furthermore, the extent of spatial covariation was graded to the magnitude of perpendicular gain asymmetry between hands. These findings suggest coordination of bilateral arm movements flexibly maneuvers along a continuous coordination spectrum in a task-dependent manner that cannot be explained by bilateral control coupling.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Minimization of performance and control costs and efferent coupling between bilaterally homologous muscle groups have been separately hypothesized to describe patterns of bimanual coordination. Here, we address whether the mechanisms mediating independent and codependent control between limbs can be weighted for successful task performance. Using bilaterally asymmetric visuomotor gain perturbations, we show bimanual coordination can be characterized as a negotiation along a spectrum between extremes of independent and codependent control, but not efferent control coupling.

The effect of movement frequency on perceptual-motor learning of a novel bimanual coordination pattern.

The most widely known studies of rhythmic limb coordination showed that frequency strongly affects the stability of some coordinations (e.g. 180° relative phase) but not others (e.g. 0°). The coupling of such rhythmic limb movements was then shown to be perceptual. Frequency affected the stability of perceptual information. We now investigated whether frequency would impact the pickup of information for learning a novel bimanual coordination pattern (e.g. 90°) and the ability to sustain the coordination at various frequencies. Twenty participants were recruited and assessed on their performance of bimanual coordination at 0°, 180°, and 90° at five scanning frequencies before and after training at 90°, during which they were assigned to practice with either a high (2.5Hz) or low (0.5Hz) frequency until attaining proficiency. The results showed that learning was frequency specific. The best post-training performance occurred at the trained frequency. Although the coordination could be acquired through high frequency training, it was at the cost of a greater amount of training and most surprisingly, did not yield improved performance at lower frequencies that are normally thought to be easier. The findings suggest that movement frequency may determine whether visual or kinesthetic information is used for learning and control of bimanual coordination.

Bimanual coordination associated with left- and right-hand dominance: testing the limb assignment and limb dominance hypothesis

In an experiment conducted by Kennedy et al. (Exp Brain Res 233:181–195, 2016), dominant right-handed individuals were required to produce a rhythm of isometric forces in a 2:1 or 1:2 bimanual coordination pattern. In the 2:1 pattern, the left limb performed the faster rhythm, while in the 1:2 pattern, the right limb produced the faster pattern. In the 1:2 pattern, interference occurred in the limb which had to produce the slower rhythm of forces. However, in the 2:1 condition, interference occurred in both limbs. The conclusion was that interference was not only influenced by movement frequency, but also influenced by limb dominance. The present experiment was designed to replicate these findings in dynamic bimanual 1:2 and 2:1 tasks where performers had to move one wrist faster than the other, and to determine the influence of limb dominance. Dominant left-handed (N = 10; LQ = − 89.81) and dominant right-handed (N = 14; LQ = 91.25) participants were required to perform a 2:1 and a 1:2 coordination pattern using Lissajous feedback. The harmonicity value was calculated to quantify the interference in the trial-time series. The analysis demonstrated that regardless of limb dominance, harmonicity was always lower in the slower moving limb than in the faster moving limb. The present results indicated that for dominant left- and dominant right-handers the faster moving limb influenced the slower moving limb. This is in accordance with the assumption that movement frequency has a higher impact on limb control in bimanual 2:1 and 1:2 coordination tasks than handedness.

Intentional Switching Between Bimanual Coordination Patterns in Older Adults: Is It Mediated by Inhibition Processes?

The study investigated the consequences of age-related decline in inhibition processes on intentional switching between bimanual coordination patterns. Fifteen young (24±2.8 years) and 20 older adults (69±5.3 years) performed Stroop tasks and bimanual coordination tasks. Stroop tasks included neutral, congruent, and incongruent conditions. Response time and error rate were measured. Bimanual coordination tasks consisted of performing in-phase (IP) and anti-phase (AP) patterns. Participants were requested to switch as quickly as possible from one pattern to the other, resulting in two different switching directions (AP to IP; IP to AP). Mean and standard deviation (SD) of the continuous relative phase (CRP) were calculated pre- and post-switching for each participant. Total switching time (TST) was measured. The switching phase was also decomposed into reaction time (RT) and reversal time (REvT). Pearson correlation analyses were performed to test for correlations between: (i) SD of CRP and response time in Stroop tasks, and (ii) switching times (TST, RT, RevT) and response time in Stroop task, respectively. In addition, parallel mediation analyses were conducted. Results showed that: (i) the AP pattern was less stable than the IP pattern in both young and older adults, (ii) coordination patterns were less stable in older adults, (iii) response times in Stroop task were longer in the incongruent condition, and (iv) RespTs were longer in older than in young participants, whatever the condition. In the bimanual coordination task, RT, RevT, and TST increased with age. The stability of the IP pattern was correlated with the response times observed in neutral and congruent conditions, while the stability of the AP pattern was correlated with response time observed in the incongruent condition. Correlation and mediation analyses showed that, in the AP to IP switching direction, RT and RevT were both significantly correlated with response times observed in the incongruent condition of Stroop task. These findings suggest that inhibition processes are involved in switching between bimanual coordination patterns, at least to trigger the early phase of switching. They also support the hypothesis that inhibition processes are more involved in maintaining the AP pattern and switching to the IP pattern. Finally, age-related changes in switching times seem to be prominently mediated by alterations of inhibition processes.

Using visual and/or kinesthetic information to stabilize intrinsic bimanual coordination patterns is a function of movement frequency.

Coordination dynamics suggest that both in-phase and anti-phase movements are intrinsic and can be readily performed without practice. As movement frequency increases, individuals performing anti-phase movement inevitably switch to perform in-phase movement. However, due to different frames of reference used to define intrinsic coordination patterns in visual and kinesthetic domains, the perception of intrinsic coordination patterns could be ambiguous, which leads to the question whether the visually or kinesthetically perceived information is used to maintain the intrinsic coordination patterns. The current study explored how the consistency between visual and kinesthetic information would impact the performance and the associated metabolic energy consumption of intrinsic bimanual coordination patterns as movement frequency increased. Thirty participants were recruited and randomly assigned to one of three groups ("Info + Spatial +", "Info + Spatial -", and "Info-Spatial +") to perform intrinsic bimanual coordination tasks using a computer-joystick system at low, high, and self-selected frequencies. The visual and kinesthetic information were manipulated to be either consistent or inconsistent by changing the spatial mapping between the motion of display and motion of joysticks. The results showed that the kinesthetic information was largely used to maintain the stability of intrinsic coordination patterns at high frequency, which could be an energy-conserving solution. However, spatial mapping alone seemed to be beneficial for keeping the visually perceived in-phase and anti-phase coordination patterns equally stable at low movement frequency, and spatially mapping the visual information to be consistent with kinesthetic information greatly enhanced the stability of anti-phase coordination. The dynamical use of visual and kinesthetic information for control of bimanual coordination is discussed.

Effects of Neurofeedback Training on Performing Bimanual Coordination In-phase and Anti-phase Patterns in Children with ADHD.

It is generally accepted that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have poor motor control, especially in bimanual coordination tasks. Such children characteristically have impaired fine motor ability, problems with force control, and poor motor coordination. They are at particular risk of loss of motor control and reduced bimanual coordination. We tested whether, compared to a control condition, neurofeedback training (NFT) could improve bimanual coordination among children with ADHD. 20 Children with ADHD (mean age 7.9 years; SD 2.11) were randomly assigned either to NFT or to a control condition. All participants completed a bimanual coordination test at the following time points: baseline, assessment 1, assessment 2, assessment 3, and again 12 session later at posttest. NFT consisted of Sensory Motor Rhythm (SMR) training to achieve increased SMR in C3 and C4, while participants in the control condition were under mock NFT conditions. Bimanual coordination accuracy and consistency improved from baseline to completion of the intervention (significant Time effect), but in the NFT condition (significant time × group interaction). Compared to the control condition, the NFT group had fewer errors in both patterns of bimanual coordination (significant Group effect). Among children with ADHD, SMR neurofeedback training (NFT) led to significant improvements in a bimanual coordination task. The SMR NFT thus appears to have the potential to improve and enhance the motor control of ADHD patients.

Bimanual control strategies.

Two tasks (A and B) were designed which required participants to sequentially move through four target positions in a Lissajous display. Task A was designed so that participants could complete the task using either unimanual or bimanual control strategies. Task B was designed so that participants could complete the task using relatively simple or more complex bimanual control strategies. The purpose of this study was to determine which control strategy the participant utilises to complete the two tasks when Lissajous displays are provided and to determine the degree to which the size of the targets influences the control strategy chosen under these conditions. The movement amplitude between two adjacent targets and the target size resulted in an Index of Difficulty (ID) of 2 and 4 for each task. For both tasks, participants practised 15 trials (30 s per trial) for each ID and then was administered a test trial. The results for both Tasks A and B indicated that the ID2 condition resulted in a circular path, whereas the ID4 condition resulted in a straight-line path on the Lissajous plot. This suggests that at the low ID condition participants produced a continuous 1:1 with 90° phase offset bimanual coordination pattern. At the high ID condition, the participants consistently chose to switch to a more stable unimanual left and right movements in Task A and to transition between in-phase and anti-phase bimanual coordination patterns in Task B. In addition, both limbs' movements were more harmonic in the low ID condition than in the high ID condition.

Expert monitoring and verbal feedback as sources of performance pressure

The influence of monitoring-pressure and verbal feedback on the performance of the intrinsically stable bimanual coordination patterns of in-phase and anti-phase was examined. The two bimanual patterns were produced under three conditions: 1) no-monitoring, 2) monitoring-pressure (viewed by experts), and 3) monitoring-pressure (viewed by experts) combined with verbal feedback emphasizing poor performance. The bimanual patterns were produced at self-paced movement frequencies. Anti-phase coordination was always less stable than in-phase coordination across all three conditions. When performed under conditions 2 and 3, both bimanual patterns were performed with less variability in relative phase across a wide range of self-paced movement frequencies compared to the no-monitoring condition. Thus, monitoring-pressure resulted in performance stabilization rather than degradation and the presence of verbal feedback had no impact on the influence of monitoring pressure. The current findings are inconsistent with the predictions of explicit monitoring theory; however, the findings are consistent with studies that have revealed increased stability for the system's intrinsic dynamics as a result of attentional focus and intentional control. The results are discussed within the contexts of the dynamic pattern theory of coordination, explicit monitoring theory, and action-focused theories as explanations for choking under pressure.

The control of amplitude and direction in a bimanual coordination task

Bimanual coordination requires task-specific control of the spatial and temporal characteristics of the movements of both hands. The present study focused on the spatial relationship between hand movements when their amplitude and direction were manipulated. In the experiment in question, participants were instructed to draw two lines simultaneously. These two lines were instructed to be drawn in mirror symmetric or perpendicular directions of each other while the length was instructed to be the same or different. The coordinative quality of amplitude control was compared when the task required symmetric and asymmetric bimanual spatial coordination patterns. Results showed that the amplitude accuracy decreased when different amplitudes and/or directions had to be generated simultaneously. The coordinative quality of direction was also compared when the task required symmetric and asymmetric bimanual spatial coordination patterns. Unlike amplitude, the direction accuracy was largely independent of coordination symmetry/asymmetry of direction or amplitude. The results suggest that the coordinative quality of amplitude control does not only interfere with amplitude asymmetry, but it also interferes with direction asymmetry. Moreover, in bimanual coordination amplitude control is more vulnerable to the influence of direction control demands than vice versa.

Coherence and interlimb force control: Effects of visual gain

Neural coupling across hemispheres and homologous muscles often appears during bimanual motor control. Force coupling in a specific frequency domain may indicate specific bimanual force coordination patterns. This study investigated coherence on pairs of bimanual isometric index finger force while manipulating visual gain and task asymmetry conditions. We used two visual gain conditions (low and high gain = 8 and 512 pixels/N), and created task asymmetry by manipulating coefficient ratios imposed on the left and right index finger forces (0.4:1.6; 1:1; 1.6:0.4, respectively). Unequal coefficient ratios required different contributions from each hand to the bimanual force task resulting in force asymmetry. Fourteen healthy young adults performed bimanual isometric force control at 20% of their maximal level of the summed force of both fingers. We quantified peak coherence and relative phase angle between hands at 0–4, 4–8, and 8–12 Hz, and estimated a signal-to-noise ratio of bimanual forces. The findings revealed higher peak coherence and relative phase angle at 0–4 Hz than at 4–8 and 8–12 Hz for both visual gain conditions. Further, peak coherence and relative phase angle values at 0–4 Hz were larger at the high gain than at the low gain. At the high gain, higher peak coherence at 0–4 Hz collapsed across task asymmetry conditions significantly predicted greater signal-to-noise ratio. These findings indicate that a greater level of visual information facilitates bimanual force coupling at a specific frequency range related to sensorimotor processing.

Intentional Switching Between Bimanual Coordination Patterns

ABSTRACTPrevious theoretical and empirical work indicates that intentional changes in a bimanual coordination pattern depends on the stability of the bimanual coordination pattern (Kelso, Schotz, & Schöner, 1988; Scholz & Kelso, 1990). The present experiments retest this notion when online Lissajous displays are provided. Switching to and from in-phase and antiphase and to and from 90° and 270° were tested in Experiment 1. Participants were able to very effectively produce the 180°, 90°, and 270° coordination patterns although performance of the in-phase coordination task was even more stable. The data indicated that switching to in-phase from antiphase was more rapid than vice versa and that switching times between 90° to 270° were similar. Experiment 2 investigated switching between 1:2 and 2:1 bimanual coordination patterns. The results indicated that switching time was similar between the 2:1 and 1:2 coordination tasks and that increases in stability over practice resulted in additional decreases in switching times. This provides additional evidence that the attractor landscape is fundamentally different dependent on the type of information provided the performer. What remains to be done is to reconcile these results with the various theories/perspectives currently used to describe and explain bimanual coordination.

Response preparation and execution during intentional bimanual pattern switching.

During continuous bimanual coordination, in-phase (IP; 0° relative phase) and anti-phase (AP; 180° relative phase) patterns can be stably performed without practice. Paradigms in which participants are required to intentionally switch between these coordination patterns have been used to investigate the interaction between the performer's intentions and intrinsic dynamics of the body's preferred patterns. The current study examined the processes associated with switching preparation and execution through the use of a startling acoustic stimulus (SAS) as the switch stimulus. A SAS is known to involuntarily trigger preprogrammed responses at a shortened latency and, thus, can be used to probe advance preparation. Participants performed cyclical IP and AP bimanual elbow extension-flexion movements in which they were required to switch patterns in response to an auditory switch cue, which was either nonstartling (80 dB) or a SAS (120 dB). Results indicated that reaction time to the switch stimulus (i.e., switch onset) was significantly reduced on startle trials, indicative of advance preparation of the switch response. Similarly, switching time was reduced on startle trials, which was attributed to increased neural activation caused by the SAS. Switching time was also shorter for AP to IP trials, but only when the switching stimulus occurred at either the midpoint or reversal locations within the movement cycle, suggesting that the switch location may affect the intrinsic dynamics of the system.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The current study provides novel information regarding preparation and execution of intentional switching between in-phase and anti-phase bimanual coordination patterns. Using a startling acoustic stimulus, we provide strong evidence that the switching response is prepared before the switch stimulus, and switch execution is accelerated by the startling stimulus. In addition, the time required to switch between patterns and relative limb contribution is dependent upon where in the movement cycle the switch stimulus occurred.

When kinesthetic information is neglected in learning a Novel bimanual rhythmic coordination.

Many studies have shown that rhythmic interlimb coordination involves perception of the coupled limb movements, and different sensory modalities can be used. Using visual displays to inform the coupled bimanual movement, novel bimanual coordination patterns can be learned with practice. A recent study showed that similar learning occurred without vision when a coach provided manual guidance during practice. The information provided via the two different modalities may be same (amodal) or different (modality specific). If it is different, then learning with both is a dual task, and one source of information might be used in preference to the other in performing the task when both are available. In the current study, participants learned a novel 90° bimanual coordination pattern without or with visual information in addition to kinesthesis. In posttest, all participants were tested without and with visual information in addition to kinesthesis. When tested with visual information, all participants exhibited performance that was significantly improved by practice. When tested without visual information, participants who practiced using only kinesthetic information showed improvement, but those who practiced with visual information in addition showed remarkably less improvement. The results indicate that (1) the information is not amodal, (2) use of a single type of information was preferred, and (3) the preferred information was visual. We also hypothesized that older participants might be more likely to acquire dual task performance given their greater experience of the two sensory modes in combination, but results were replicated with both 20- and 50-year-olds.

Atypical inter-hemispheric communication correlates with altered motor inhibition during learning of a new bimanual coordination pattern in developmental coordination disorder.

Impairment of motor learning skills in developmental coordination disorder (DCD) has been reported in several studies. Some hypotheses on neural mechanisms of motor learning deficits in DCD have emerged but, to date, brain-imaging investigations are scarce. The aim of the present study is to assess possible changes in communication between brain areas during practice of a new bimanual coordination task in teenagers with DCD (n=10) compared to matched controls (n=10). Accuracy, stability and number of mirror movements were computed as behavioural variables. Neural variables were assessed by electroencephalographic coherence analyses of intra-hemispheric and inter-hemispheric fronto-central electrodes. In both groups, accuracy of the new coordination increased concomitantly with right intra-hemispheric fronto-central coherence. Compared to typically developing teenagers, DCD teenagers presented learning difficulties expressed by less stability, no stabilization of the new coordination and a greater number of mirror movements despite practice. These measures correlated with reduced inter-hemispheric communication, even after practice of the new coordination. For the first time, these findings provide neuro-imaging evidence of a kind of inter-hemispheric 'disconnection' related to altered inhibition of mirror movements during motor learning in DCD.

Bimanual coordination patterns are stabilized under monitoring-pressure.

The influence of monitoring-pressure on the performance of anti-phase and in-phase bimanual coordination was examined. The two bimanual patterns were produced under no-monitoring and monitoring-pressure conditions at self-paced frequencies. Anti-phase coordination was always less stable than in-phase coordination, with or without monitoring. When performed under monitoring-pressure, the coordination patterns were performed with less variability in relative phase for both patterns across a range of self-paced movement frequencies compared to performance without monitoring. Thus, while monitoring-pressure did induce a behavioral change, it consisted of performance stabilization rather than degradation, a finding inconsistent with explicit-monitoring theory. However, the findings are consistent with the theory of coordination dynamics and studies that have revealed increased stability for the system's intrinsic dynamics as a result of attentional focus and intentional control.

Relative phase stability: The interaction of attentional instruction and frequency on relative phase of bimanual coordination movements

The present paper aimed to study the effect of using attentional instruction and increasing the rhythm on the relative phase stability of coordinated out-phase bimanual coordination movements. Using a plotter device, the participants (N=16) performed out-phase bimanual coordination pattern (45, 90, and 135 degree) while focusing on signs of the device (external attention) or their forearm (internal attention) or without attentional instruction with increasing frequency. KP was provided to participants after each attempt. Dependent variables were analyzed by 3 (attention) × 3 (relative phase) × 4 (frequency) analysis of variance with repeated measures on second and third variables. The results revealed that external attention lead to increased stability of relative phase in all three phase patterns. Additionally, increased frequency of motions caused decreased stability of relative in all three patterns. Findings of this study corroborated the constrained action hypothesis and showed that, unlike in-phase and anti-phase attractor patterns and because of the difficulty out-phase patterns, external attention instruction can act contrary to linear changes of control parameter and increase their stability of relative phases.

The Effect of Sensory Disturbance and Cognitive Load on the Transition of Relative Phase in Bimanual Coordination Task in Elderly Women

Introduction: Bimanual coordination is an important ability that is used in many daily tasks including throwing, catching and many sport skills. Performing these activities depends on many factors such as sensory and attentional features. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sensory disturbance and cognitive load on time of the relative phase transition in anti-phase bimanual coordination pattern among elderly women. Materials and Methods: Twelve right-handed healthy old women (66.0 ± 2.8 years old) of the twenty four voluntaries were selected based on the inclusion criteria in this study. Participants started their movement on bimanual coordination device with anti-phase pattern at the frequency of 0.50 Hz .Then, after each five seconds, 0.25 Hz was gradually increased to frequency and continued until the anti-phase pattern turned to in-phase pattern. This task was performed in two different conditions concluding with cognitive load and without it with the disturbance of visual, auditory and proprioceptive senses. Data were analyzed using 2 × 4 repeated-measures analysis of variences, Bonferroni correction and paired-samples t tests. Results: The main effects of cognitive load (P = 0.004), sensory disturbance (P = 0.040) and interaction (P = 0.020) were mainly significant. The effect of sensory disturbance in the condition of without cognitive load was significant (P = 0.004). In the condition of without cognitive load, proprioceptive disturbance significantly affected the time of the relative phase transition. Conclusion: Results indicated the prominent role of cognitive load on selected task. In the condition of without cognitive load, ‎proprioceptive sense had a stronger effect than visual and auditory senses; but in the presence of cognitive load, the ‎effect of sensory disturbance was lost. In terms of change in time of transition of relative phase with change in task ‎and environmental constraints, results of this study are in line with dynamic systems view.‎
