Bilateral Dentigerous Cysts in a Dog

Dentigerous cysts are infrequently seen in veterinary medicine, but the consequences of an undiagnosed dentigerous cyst can be severe. Dentigerous cysts, that can be sub-classified as eruption or follicular, are a type of benign odontogenic cyst. They can cause significant bony and dental destruction associated with expansion if they remain undiagnosed for a period of time. Dentigerous cysts are secondary to embedded or impacted teeth, however not every impacted tooth subsequently forms a dentigerous cyst. Intraoral dental radiographs are necessary to differentiate a missing tooth from an impacted tooth. This case demonstrates the successful surgical management of a dog with bilateral impacted mandibular canine teeth, with secondary dentigerous cyst formation.

Kissing molars: Report of a case

There are few cases of “kissing molars” related in English language literature. The term “kissing molar” was given by Van Hoof [1] in 1973, describing four impacted molars in a 31-year-old patient. The imaginological appearance consisted of a single follicular space associated with two molars with their occlusal surfaces in close apposition and the roots pointing in opposite directions [2].The condition of impacted bilateral kissing molars is only reported four times in the literature [1–4]. The occurrence of a dentigerous cyst associated with this phenomena was found in only one patient [5]. In a dentigerous cyst scenario, the risk and morbidity of a surgical procedure must be evaluated in the management of asymptomatic patients, so the treatment approaches should be based on patient age, cyst site and size, involvement of vital structures and potential for normal eruption into occlusion of the impacted tooth involved [6]. Furthermore, in surgical treatment of impacted molars in mandible it is critical to evaluate the relationship of the impacted teeth and the alveolar inferior nerve using high resolution cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) which improves the surgical management of the teeth, helps the surgical planning and avoids unexpected casualties from the surgery [7,8].The aim of this article is to describe a case of a bilateral kissing molars in mandible associated with bilateral dentigerous cyst assessed through CBCT images and the management of this condition. Furthermore, it was reviewed all cases of kissing molars reported in the literature.

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst: a report of two cases in the mandible

PURPOSE: To describe the behavior clinical and pathological features of two cases of odontogenic cyst orthokeratinized. CASE DESCRIPTION: In case 1, a 17-year-old woman presented hard and painless swelling in the left posterior mandible. Radiographically, a radiolucent area with a radiopaque was observed. A clinical diagnosis of ameloblastoma or odontogenic keratocystic tumor was established. The histopathological examination revealed an orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst. In case 2, a 23-year-old woman presented a radiolucent lesion surrounded by radiopaque halo symmetrically distributed on both partially erupted lower third molars. A clinical diagnosis of bilateral dentigerous cyst (DC) was rended. The histopathological examination showed bilateral orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst. CONCLUSION: Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of lesions occurring in the jawbones associated with an impacted tooth, particularly those cases simulating dentigerous cyst. In addition, we observed the importance of radiographs taken prior to orthodontic treatment as an important tool in the diagnosis of oral pathologies. Performing routine radiograph is of high clinical value, especially before orthodontic treatment.

Bilateral dentigerous cysts (heterotopic polyodontia) in a yearling Standardbred colt

SummaryThis article describes the occurrence of bilateral dentigerous cysts in a 1‐year‐old entire male Standardbred horse. Computer tomography (CT) with a positive contrast CT fistulogram was used to accurately define the anatomy of the cysts preoperatively. Conventional surgical techniques were used to remove the cysts under general anaesthesia. The CT studies were able to precisely define the margins of the cysts and facilitated uncomplicated surgical excision. Follow‐up examination of the animal revealed excellent cosmesis at the surgical site. Histology was used to confirm the diagnosis of bilateral dentigerous cysts. Preoperative CT studies are invaluable to precisely define the anatomical locations of the dental anomalies associated with dentigerous cysts and thereby allow confident and uncomplicated excision. Dentigerous cysts may occur bilaterally in horses.

Treatment of nonsyndromic dentigerous cysts in primary dentition

ObjectiveDentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts that are associated with the crowns of permanent teeth. They usually occur singly and are located in the mandible. Nonsyndromic bilateral dentigerous cysts (NSBDC) are rarely seen during childhood. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term effects of the marsupialization technique in growing children with NSBDC.Study designSeven patients with NSBDC (4 female, 3 male) ranging in age from 7 to 9 years (mean 8.35 years) were involved in the study. All the individuals were treated by marsupialization. Space-maintaining appliances were applied during permanent teeth eruption. Intraoral photographs, and panoramic and periapical films were taken before surgery and during healing.ResultsThe NSBDC were successfully treated by the marsupialization technique and rapid healing period was observed in the growing patients, without any loss of permanent teeth. No recurrence was seen in the long-term follow-up period (3–10 years).ConclusionOur clinical and radiological results revealed that using the marsupialization technique in children with NSBDC provided safe healing of permanent teeth around the dentigerous cysts in a short period. However, treatment planning and regular clinical follow-ups are necessary to ensure clinical success.

Dentigerous cysts are one of the common cysts of the jaws and are associated with the crowns of permanent teeth, most frequently with impacted mandibular third molars. Bilateral dentigerous cysts generally occur in association with a developmental syndrome or systemic diseases. Bilateral dentigerous cysts in absence of a syndrome is a rare condition. There are only 18 cases reported in the literature till date (Dinkar et al. J Indian Soc Pedod Prev Dent 25:56-59, 2007). There are no cases reported with multiple dentigerous cyst involving all the four quadrants.

Dentigerous cyst: a retrospective clinicopathological analysis of 2082 dentigerous cysts in British Columbia, Canada

The aim of this research is to analyze the prevalence of dentigerous cysts (DCs) in a population-based cohort in British Columbia, Canada, and to report unusual cases associated with DC. The database of the British Columbia Oral Biopsy Service was searched from 1998 to 2007. 2082 histologically confirmed DCs from 2029 patients were retrieved and retrospectively analyzed for incidence, age, gender and ethnicity. The results show that this is a common jaw cyst with male predilection, has a peak incidence in younger adults and is more common in Caucasians. Multiple DCs, representing 2.5% of the cases, are not associated with any syndromes or systemic conditions. 0.5% DCs were associated with other cysts or tumours at the same site or the opposite side of the jaw. The authors report the first series of cases presenting clinically as bilateral DCs, but histologically as an odontogenic tumour or another type of odontogenic cyst. DCs can co-exist with other more serious conditions, such as odontogenic keratocyst or cystic ameloblastoma. This association with more significant conditions indicates the importance of histologically confirming any jaw cyst, even when it presents clinically as a classic DC.

Nonsyndromic bilateral maxillary dentigerous cysts: Review of literature and report of an unusual case

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts that arise from the dental follicle of an unerupted or developing tooth. They are the second most common odontogenic cysts after radicular cysts. Multiple dentigerous cysts have been reported on occasion in association with syndromes such as cleidocranial dysplasia, mucopolysaccharidosis and basal cell nevus syndrome. We report the clinical and radiologic findings of bilateral maxillary dentigerous cysts in a nonsyndromic 10-year-old boy, a condition that, to our knowledge has only been reported twice. The importance of early diagnosis and management is highlighted.

Spontaneous Regression of Bilateral Dentigerous Cysts: A Case Report

A dentigerous cyst is the most common developmental odontogenic cyst and believed to be slowly progressive in nature. This case report describes an incidental finding of spontaneous regression of bilateral dentigerous cysts associated with lower impacted third molars in a 30-year-old, fully dentate female. Together with three other similar reports, a few possible explanations are postulated and the understanding of natural history of dentigerous cysts is questioned. The discovery of a dentigerous cyst in a patient always warrants special attention. This article highlights the fact that surgical treatment is not the only solution for a dentigerous cyst and, in rare cases, conservative management can save the patient from having unnecessary surgery.

Bilateral dentigerous cysts are rare and generally occur in association with a developmental syndrome or systemic disease, such as mucopolysaccharidosis and cleidocranial dysplasia. Bilateral dentigerous cysts in the absence of a syndrome are rare and to date only 17 cases have been described. The following is a report of a case of unusual bilateral non-syndromic dentigerous cysts associated with mandibular second molar and maxillary third molar and a review of the literature. Bilateral dentigerous cysts in these locations have not been previously reported.

Spontaneous regression of bilateral dentigerous cysts associated with impacted mandibular third molars

A case is described where a routine panoramic radiograph revealed radiolucencies, compatible with dentigerous cysts, associated with the crowns of bilateral impacted lower third molars. Both cysts had regressed in a follow up radiograph three years later with no intervention. This is the first reported case of spontaneous regression of bilateral dentigerous cysts.

Bilateral Traumatic Bone Cysts of the Mandible: An Unusual Clinical Presentation

This case report describes an unusual clinical presentation of bilateral traumatic bone cysts of the mandible. These lesions presented clinically as bilateral dentigerous cysts associated with the mandibular third molar teeth. Because of this unusual presentation, a combination of clinical examination, thorough history, radiographic studies, surgical exploration, and microscopic evaluation was necessary in order to render a definitive diagnosis on this case. Knowledge and awareness of these features are important to assist in the initial diagnosis as well as patient management and follow up.

The management of bilateral cysts of the mandible

The management of a case of bilateral dentigerous cysts of the mandible in a 9-year-old boy has been presented. The consideration of conservative treatment in this age group, combined with adequate postoperative care, has been emphasized. The postoperative results that can be obtained with the marsupialization technique have been illustrated.
